Superb/rare African Lega Passport hand Mask with handle DR Congo worn patina.Very geometric. measures approx: 9" h by 3" 5/8 w thanks for looking ... moreLega African masks are usually carved in a highly distinctive style. With a heart-shaped concave face, a slightly bulging forehead and an open narrow mouth. The complex system of instruction. Initiation, and advancement for both men and women in the Bwami society uses masks and figures to document the various levels of Bwami and to serve as badges validating the initiate?s knowledge of the secrets of Bwami and of their rank. Through time Bwami initiates earn the privilege to wear and display African masks that might be worn on their arms or faces or simply exposed on racks or on the ground indicating their rank before other Bwami society members. For the Lega the ultimate goal is to reach the uppermost level of Bwami where one would be recognized as a Kindi, a leader and also a moral and social authority to be honored with the right to wear or carry certain masks. It has age and the marks of much wear and some damage to the lower left chin area. However this does detract from the highly abstracted quality of the mask.

Today you have a unique opportunity to own a part of an impressive collection of original African objects which is now being liquidated due to several ... moreunforeseen circumstances. Please check out all of our auctions for other interesting pieces! This mask is being sold as part of a private collection of African tribal art and artifacts. It was appraised as part of a larger collection in 2005 which has since been divided. And an appraiser estimated its value at only $260 at that time almost a decade ago. Much of the collection has since been sold privately or gifted to different institutional organizations. Objects that remain from this collection are of very good quality, and some have been recently exhibited and displayed to the public in Georgia. An excerpt from the appraisal is scanned to the photographs within this auction, and is reflective of the appraiser's opinion of this piece's value in 2005. The appraisal is not included with the auction, you are buying the mask alone. All reasonable offers considered. Please inspect our high resolution photographs prior to bidding; as this is a liquidation, no refunds or exchanges are permitted. It is difficult to discuss this mask definitively as they are either incompletely discussed or are themselves so very rare. Sketchy reports indicate that they were used in many associations including in initiation ceremonies of the Ganza and Mbai association. By a diviner's society or Nkunda association. They were displayed in funerals for members of the Nkunda association. This white painted mask is simple but strongly carved and could be an important addition to a collection of the art of the Kumu people. In order to support themselves and continue with their studies the students at the Academy sell their art. MASCHERA ANTICA AFRICANA BASONGE CONGO Antique African Tribe Mask: Click Pictures to Enlarge Antica e splendida maschera africana lignea da danza. Damage/Repair, large cracks with repair along both sides. Stains, wear, Additional Information: This large. Abstract mask with its colorful geometric ... moredesigns is from the eastern part of Pende territory. The mask is icalled"pumbu a mfunu" and would have been owned by a chief. Today masks of this type and a number of others are used mainly for the decoration of the chief's hut, but they are still danced on rare occasions. When danced, the mask expressed the power and authority of the chief. Geometric designs filled with colorful pigments reflected the chief's prestige, and the classic, google-eyed Eastern Pende gaze portrayed anger and was meant to scare. A raffia fringe would have framed the perimeter and hid the dancer's identity, adding to the power of the performance. The Pende, like most of the art-producing cultures from the western Congo, have a rich artisitic tradition and have produced many masterpieces found in galleries and museums. They are perhaps best known for their"mbuya" initiation masks, and the exquisite little ivory masquettes known as"ikhoko" given to newly initiated boys, which are worn and treasured for life. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi. PhD. 84054* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2

Congo: Tribal used Old beautiful African Kifwebe mask.
This is a beautiful antique Luba face mask from the Katanga region in South East DRC. The Luba is a large tribe whose establishment as an organized power can be traced back to the 16th c. The Luba Empire then expanded through the 19th c. before eroding in part due to the European colonization. As a major center of power. The Luba civilization produced a vast number of political and royal insignia(staff, spears, knifes, axles, cups, headrests, stools, etc. as well as masks. Eastern Luba refers to a group located at the most eastern part of Luba territory– of mixed origin(Luba, Hemba, Buyu) and at the time vassals of the Luba King. Eastern Luba also carved a variety of objects(of power and ritual) and masks– which incorporate elements of the main Luba group and from the other originating tribes. The piece here belongs to the Kifwebe type– a ... moretype generally associated to the neighboring Songye although the Eastern Luba also produced such masks, in smaller numbers. It is round in shape and shows the characteristic engraved stripes radiating from the eyes, painted in red, white and black. It is made of a medium light wood. The mask is approx. 1 7 by 8 inches.

COLOR, ANCESTRY ASSOCIATIONS, AND PERISHABILITY MAY ALL HAVE BEEN CONSIDERATIONS IN THAT CHOICE. FIRST, IT MAY BE SIGNIFICANT TO THE SELECTION CRITERIA THAT THE WOOD OF THIS TREE POSSESSES A DISTINCTLY WHITE GROWTH RING SECTION AND A RED SAP-FILLED ... moreCENTRAL CORE, THESE BEING THE TWO SIGNALLING COLOURS OF FEMALE AND MALE KIFWEBE RESPECTIVELY. THE SECOND POINT TO NOTE IS THAT THIS SPECIES WAS CITED AS ONE OF THE SERIES OF TREES PLANTED AROUND EPATA(THE CHIEF’S RESIDENCE) POSSIBLY IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE ANCESTORS. IN ADDITION TO MULELA, A FEW OTHER TREES SERVED THE SONGYE AS SOURCES FOR CARVING WOOD. THEY HAD IN COMMON THAT THEY WERE SOFT AND LIGHT IN WEIGHT BUT NOT PARTICULARLY DURABLE. THE IMPLICATION OF THE LATTER CHARACTERISTIC CREATES THE POSSIBILITY THAT WHAT SEEMS AN INHERENT DETRIMENT WAS, IN FACT, A MOTIVATING FACTOR IN THE CHOICE OF THAT WOOD. THEIR LOW DENSITY FACTOR INDICATES THAT THEY ARE ALL WOODS HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO INSECT ATTACK AND PRONE TO CRACKING AND OTHER DAMAGE. THIS ANATOMICAL PROPERTY OF THE WOODS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT AMONG SONGYE AS IT SUGGESTS THAT THE MASKS ARE PERISHABLE AND REPLACEABLE OBJECTS. IN A GENERAL SENSE, ONE HAS THE IMPRESSION THAT THE LIFE AND MORTALITY OF THE MASKS COINCIDE METAPHORICALLY WITH THE CHANGING GENERATIONS OF RULERS AND THEIR REGIMES. Vintage African Tribal Lega Bearded Mask From The Congo Authentic Bwami Society
This particular mask is in amazing condition with minor wear and tear from it being used. There is a stand included so you can display ... morethe mask. The Salampasu have a highly stratified society with initiation ceremonies playing vital roles in maintaining the social system. The Salampasu live mostly from hunting. But the women do some farming. The major reason for mask making among the Salampasu was the Mungongo(Warrior) Society. A male-only organization. Members rose through the ranks of the Mungongo by purchasing a series of masks that were ranked in a hierarchy of importance. Earning the right to acquire and wear a mask involved performing specific deeds(not recorded) plus large payments of livestock, drink, and other material goods to the members of the society. Possessing many masks indicated wealth and knowledge(since a new owner purchased the esoteric knowledge associated with a particular mask) Three categories of masks were used for the various ceremonies of the Mungongo Society(ibuku? idangani? symbolizing the three levels of the society: hunters. Songye Kifwebe Mask Male DR Congo African 29.25 Inch
Title, Songye Kifwebe Mask Male with Bright Colors DR Congo African 29.25 Inch Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic of the Congo, People, Songye, Materials, Wood. Pigment, raffia fibers, cotton cloth, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 29.25 inches H. x 12.5 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, cracks in crest. Along the nose, and in chin, chips with repair on top of crest, cracks with repair on one side of the face, crack inside one eye, Additional Information: An interesting Songye Kifwebe mask with huge crest and striations painted in bright colors(yellow. Red) and in black and white. This s a male mask used by members of the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. The remain of raffia costume is still attached to the mask. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The ... moreface generally is covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented. The mouth is most often square and protruding. If it has a central crest, it is masculine; if not, feminine. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. Such masks are worn during initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. According to Hersak(1985: 168) The striated masks, or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red. The Kifwebe tradition which exists also among the Luba, seems to have originated south of the eastern chiefdom in an area of Luba/Songe admixture. The Songye confirm this provenance by the interpretation that the kifwebe striations relate(apart from the zebra) to a pugnacious species of striped bushbuck antelope which inhabited the area. Rec

A short nose, and a circular mouth in relief. Masks such as this were used during the initiation ceremonies of the Kalunga or Alunga association and at the Butende ceremonies. They are displayed in front of the initiates of the Kalunga or Butende to get their positive powers on them. Songola Mask White Flat Face DR Congo African SALE Was $39
Title, Songola Mask White Flat Face DR Congo African Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Songola, Materials, Wood, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 11.5 inches x 4.25 inches, Overall Condition, Poor. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Worn patina. Cracks and chips at edges and face Additional Information: This is a rare example of a ritual mask from an almost totally undocumented group. The Songola ... moreare neighbors of the Lega. Whose rituals and artistic styles they emulate. Their masks are beautifully elongated and narrow, and the heart-shaped face, in some ways resembling Fang"Ngil" masks in their shape. Our mask has open mouth, the eyes are represented by two large openings. The nose occupies half of the Face. Another type of Songola mask is very similar to some Mbole masks, called executioner masks(see Marc Leo Felix, 1987, 162) Such Songola masks would probably have been used in initiation ceremonies similar to the Bwami rituals of the Lega. There are almost no writings on the Songola people and their art. The Songola originated west of Lomami and have common origins with the Metoko. Kumu, Bangu-Bangu and Zimba(see Marc Leo Felix)They are farmers and fish is also an important economic activity among the Songola. From the Lega, the Songola borrowed the Bwami society in which context masks and figures are almost exclusively used. Recommended Reading: Cornet. Joseph. The Kongo demonstrate the extreme complexity of their traditions on major occasions. Such as the investiture of a chief or at funerals. The Kongo pantheon was small: one all-powerful god who gave healing powers to the king, to the nganga. And to the heads of cults. Besides their textiles of great renown, the Kongo had a funerary art of decorated steles and funerary statues in stone, very often depicting the chief seated cross-legged in a posture of reflection. Some of these statues were placed on tombs to aid the spirits of the dead to join the world of the deceased. Wood sculptures represent royal wives. Hunters, musicians. And healers. a Very Rare Old and Field used Kumu African mask from the Congo
This is a very impressive old wooden mask from the Kumu tribe of the Congo. Central Africa. Such masks are not common in literature as they were only collected in the last half of the 20th century. There is only sketchy information to their actual use, though from my own reading they were used in circumcision ceremonies as well as dances. This mask is OLD. No doubt. It has well weathered old wood which when held you can feel the age. Note the well worn regalia holes which were drilled by hand, and the worn edges from handling and use. The mask measures 13 x 8 1/2 inches. a small fragment of bark cloth is still attached to the top. Part of the mask regalia or costume I assume. The best Kumu mask I have personally ever offered in the past 23 years selling African Tribal Art.
