Title, Tabwa Helmet Mask Musangwe DR Congo African Type of Object, mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Tabwa, Materials, Wood. Pigment, cowrie ... moreshells, Approximate Age, mid 20th century, Dimensions, 11.25 inches H. x 10 inches W. Overall Condition, Poor. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, large crack in head around ears. Fairly repaired, chipped ears, scratches in places A dditional Information: A Tabwa helmet mask from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Tabwa masks are rare and little is known concerning their use and functions. The literature points out three types of masks among the Tabwa. The first category is represented by the anthropomorphic wooden helmet mask like this with headdress nicely decorated with diamond and other patterns. Scarification patterns around hairstyle line, in temples, and in cheeks. This category represents the female ancestor(Musangwe) symbolizing fertility. The name Musangwe is related to sexual promiscuity. Our mask falls into this category. During the masquerade, Musangwe is always accompanied by the male mask(Kiyunde) which constitutes the second category. This second type is a zoomorphic mask representing a buffalo. There is no precise information to confirm if these two masks perform the primordial or mythical couple. The third type of masks was discovered more recently. Masks of this category are made of glass beads stitched onto raffia cloth. The functions of these masks are not known for sure. But they all are related to either the Mbudye or the Butwa society. They are probably involved in ritual dances linked to fertility, the birth of twins and ancestor cult in the Butwa

Did I get this while I lived in the Congo region of Africa? Heck no. its scary there. I did however buy it from the guy living in Burundi(god bless his ... moresole) and he shipped it to me in came in a hand-made wooden crate made for the sole purpose of arriving to me safely. This mask is from my personal collection(purchased about 8 years ago) It is LARGE. A 11 inch diameter across the base. 7 inches of upward carving inside the mask. And about another 11 inches tall. Go get a tape measure, draw those dimensions out. Picture it. made of wood now. sitting in front of you. Several"bolt holes" around the rim of the base. I swore these were used to adhere the mask to a leather shoulder strap and wear this in some"battle" But given the original description/ad i think i may have day-dreamed and come up with an alternative folklore. Please assume the original description to be accurate(see below) Three notable cracks. One medium side one over the left eye/cheek. A lessor one over the right eye region. A third and perhaps the biggest diagonally down the back of the head. All noticeable in pictures. None start/end withing anything closer than 3 inches of one another. Structurally a sound. Easily handled, vintage, rare mask. Here is what the original dealer said when I bought the mask at the time: Tribal art helmet mask. From the Tabwa tribe living in southeastern DR Congo. MATERIAL: Wood and pigments. It measures 10,1" 26 cm) in height. It shows wear and tear and chips. This item is located in Burundi and it will be shipped to you directly from there via registered airmail. We travel often to Great African lakes or Central Africa countries and we choose personally all the pieces offered in our auctions. Thanks for looking. No Reserve! Title, Kuba Royal Helmet Mask M'Boom DR Congo Africa, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba-Bushoong, Materials, Wood. Hide, ... morecooper alloy, beads, cowrie shells, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 13 inches. Wide is 8 inches. Depth is 13 inches. Overall Condition, Good Damage/Repair, wear. Chips in places, rusting metal, dents, Additional Information: A superb example of one of the three accepted Kuba"royal" masks. Featuring exquisite geometric decoration. Intricate woven fringes with cowries and beads. The offered mask is a beautiful example with elaborate beadwork. This is a royal mask known as Bwoom recognized by the bulging forehead the exaggerate nose, the mask would have been difficult to categorize. This is probably due to the diverse stylistic elements found throughout Kuba territory, as the mask has features more commonly found among the Kuba sub-groups. Bwoom" represents the evil brother in ceremonial reenactments of Kuba mythology, as well as the inevitable struggle for power among individuals. In these dances, Bwoom seeks both the mythical throne of his brother, Mwaash A Mboy, as well as the king's wife, Ngaady A Mwaash. Bwoom, a pygmy, symbolically speaks for the common man, with all the temptation and folly that entails. This colorful trio of characters comprises the recognized pantheon of the royal helmet masks, which are eagerly sought-after by collectors and museums. This mask has a bulbous forehead and an underslung jaw. Copper ornaments the forehead. Raffia headdress and beard are embroidered with cowries. And beads are found on nose, forehead, lips, and back of headdress. The raffia is hand-woven. This mask has a lot of presence and would stand out in any collection. Damage/Repair, Missing animal head on top. Worn patina on face Additional Information: A Suku helmet mask surmounted by a quadruped. Unfortunately. The animal head is missing. The head has designs made out of bright colors. The Suku. Whose art closely parallels that of their more populous neighbors, the Yaka, number around 80,000. They extensively use masks to promote success in hunting and to venerate ancestors. The helmet mask presented here, with its white face and blue vertical"scarification" marks, probably originates from the northern part of Suku territory, as the southern artists use quite different color schemes. In many cases. Suku helmet masks are surmounted by animal and human figures. Usually the Suku mask may be differentiated from other masks by the use of white paint for the face, as well as by the presence of blue pigments for the eyelids, and vertical scars beneath the eyes. Some, like the one illustrated, are carved with a raised hair crest, carefully worked with incised circles. The strongly carved face would have been painted white at some point in the past, with small vertical markings under the eye in blue or black. The detailing of the eyes and the line that separates the face and hair are evidence the work of a skilled carver. A larg

Or the Kongo people(Kongo: hunters” also referred to as the Congolese, are a Bantu ethnic group who live along the Atlantic coast of Africa from Pointe-Noire(Republic of Congo) to Luanda, Angola. They are primarily defined by the speaking of Kikongo, a common language. They are the largest ethnic group in the Republic of Congo. In the late 20th century. They numbered about 10,220,000. It is most likely the Kongo people arrived in the region of the mouth of the Congo River before 500 BC. As part of the larger Bantu migration. They were already working iron in the region and practicing agriculture by that time. Social complexity had probably been achieved in some regions where Kikongo is spoken by second century AD. BEAUTIFUL OLD KUBA PEOPLE PAINTED WOOD MASK FROM CONGO - 2
You are bidding on a Beautiful KUBA PEOPLE Painted Carved wood mask. With amazing design details, from Congo. Aside from the beautiful cloth mentioned above. The Kuba also produce carved wooden masks and figures. They also carve headrests, divination oracles, and anthropomorphic cups. In the 16th century. The Kuba peoples migrated from the distant north to their current location along the Sankuru River. When they arrived, however, they found that the Twa already lived there. The Twa were eventually absorbed into the Kuba Kingdom, but retained some independent cultural characteristics. The height of the Kingdom was during the mid-19th century. Europeans first reached the area in 1884, but the Kuba, being relatively isolated, were not as affected by the slave trade as many of the other peoples in the area. The Nsapo invaded during the late ... more19th century, and the Kingdom was broken up to a large extent. The Kuba oral history tells of the creation of the world by Bumba. Who decreed that the Bushoong would always be the ruling class. This creator god is not formally worshiped. At one time the Kuba had a religion based on ancestor worship, but this seems to have died out, although divination is still practiced in order to discover causes of evil. Success during hunting is recognized as a gift from the gods. It is not incidental that diviners often employ carved wooden hunting dogs as rubbing oracles in order to arrive at their knowledge. Dogs are seen throughout the region as responsible for delivering the will of the god, whether it be through hunting or through the diviner. BEAUTIFUL PENDE PEOPLE PAINTED WOOD MASK OF A BEARDED MALE FIGURE FROM CONGO
You are bidding on a Beautiful PENDE PEOPLE Painted Carved wood mask of a bearded male figure. With amazing design details, from Congo. The Pende carve numerous types of masks. Most of which are associated with education and initiation rituals. In the northwest part of the territory wooden figures are sculpted. Carved stools, staffs, chairs, and swords are used by chiefs and other important people to signify their power. The Pende. Along with their neighbors the Yaka and Suku, can trace their origins to modern day Angola, between the Atlantic Coast and the Kwanza(Cuanza) River. They were forced north to their current region during the Lunda expansion in 1620, which also resulted in numerous cultural influences. They are divided into two major groups, a western group who live just to the east of the Yaka and an eastern group who live on the ... morewestern bank of the Kasai River. Although each group is culturally distinct they consider themselves as one people. The Chokwe expansion around 1885 engulfed most of the eastern Pende and some of the western group as well. Colonialism halted the expansion of the Chokwe and allowed the Pende to reclaim their independence. The ancestors(mvumbi) are placated through various rituals and offerings. The family head is responsible for taking care of the shrines and appeasing the spirits. The Pende recognize that spirits may be either good or bad. Depending on the manner in which they died. Also, when ancestors are neglected they will cause bad things to happen to the family. The result may be sickness or hardship, both of which require a visit to the local diviner to determine the best way to appease the spirits. Through the diviner, the spirit will sometimes demand that a wooden sculpture be commissioned so that offerings can be made to it. Colors enhance the shape of the mask while adding visual dramatic flair and the play of abstract and geometric patterns enliven the surface and reflect a great sense of design on the part of the carver. This is a visually exciting example of Pende mask. The Pende are known for their artistic forms ranging from house decorations. Figural sculptures, numerous carved ivory pendants, and a wide variety of masks. Masks from the eastern Pende are fairly numerous and often abstract with a generous use of red, black and white coloring. Masks similar to this example are known as Pumbu Ya Mafumu and are dedicated to society elites. They are large masks and are worn with a ruff of grass that is held by a number of holes along the sides and bottom of the mask. These large masks will be carried during ceremonies or in some instances hung on walls. 73586* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers! Fine African Art Congo Hemba Tribal Mask Masque monkey gorilla NO RESERV
Old and fine wood African Hemba mask. Carved in very hard and heavy wood, good volume) and with a very nice encrusted sacrificial patina. Mid 20th Century. I love the presence and the"evocation" of this piece. A wooden face mask with a pointed forehead. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It is known among the Hemba simply as(Mwisi Gwa So'o, ibombo ya soho" or"Soko Muntu" which means'monkey ... moremask" The masks Ibombo ya soho represent the idea of death when they are danced at funerals. The exaggerated features of the Soho mask represents a creature of the bush that is half human and half monkey. It is a being that can be either dangerous or helpful. The personification of this being depicts the potential of nature and the need to control its excesses through the dancing of the men’s society Ibombo ya Soho masks. These masks are not very large and upon occasions are worn at dancer’s waists or kept in the house to protect the household from malevolent forces. The Hemba monkey mask reflects the ability of the African artist to characterize the idea of life and death in brooding sculptural form. As well as the dancer’s ability to impart the lessons of living within a rationally structured society. Height: 33 cm. 13 in. Stand not included Read Before Bidding I am not a shop dealer. The Suku are and have been heavily influenced by the Yaka carving masking traditions especially among the western Suku where they share many masking forms. Where the Yaka versions were brightly colored the Suku Kakungu masks are less colorful but sculpturally more dynamic. Worn as a helmet the priest/leader of the boys camp would wear this large mask and use the eye holes just below the eyes to look through. This mask does not have eye holes. This large mask. Over two feet tall has a large forehead, bulging eyes, great saggy cheeks, a great oversized nose and a small mouth carved in relief all nearly lost in the excessive features of the face. This mask shows an bulging forehead. A concave face, pointed chin, and the netting headdress. The Lulua are well know for their elaborate body marking and facial scarification through their sculptures and early 19th century photographs. This mask has round marks on the bulging forehead similar to Lulua sculpture. The treatment of the eyes, ears and smiling face are also taken from Lulua figural sculpture. This face mask ... morewith its expressionistic sculptural forms and well carved details conveys some of the'body art' so well developed among the Lulua. Among the Lulua, earlier known also as the Bena Lulua, masks are rarely experienced and where known are given short definitions of how they are used such as during the circumcision of young boys or other rites of passage. This lack of information is due in fact that there are simply few masks recorded among the Lulua. This is a rare example of its kind and would be of good addition to any collection. In these dances, Bwoom seeks both the mythical throne of his brother, Mwaash A Mboy, as well as the king's wife, Ngaady A Mwaash. I swore these were used to adhere the mask to a leather shoulder strap and wear this in some"battle" But given the original description/ad i think i may have day-dreamed and come up with an alternative folklore. ... morePlease assume the original description to be accurate(see below) Three notable cracks. Kuba Bwoom African Tribal Ritual Mask, Democratic Republic of Congo
Here is an original Kuba tribal mask that was handcrafted in the Lulua Province. Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is made of wood, cowrie shells, beads, fur, leather, and cloth. It measures 12" high, 8" across,10" deep, and spans 18" from the bottom of the beard to the top of the forehead. The mask was made for performances of a ritual masquerade. From information available online from the Brooklyn Museum, I learned that Kuba mythology revolves around three figures, each represented by a masquerade character: Woot, the creator and founder of the ruling dynasty; Woot’s spouse; and Bwoom. Bwoom’s specific identity varies according to different versions of the myth. He may represent the king’s younger brother, a person of Twa descent, or a commoner. Embodying a subversive force within the royal court, the Bwoom masquerade ... moreis often performed in conflict with the masked figure representing Woot. The mask is in fine condition. There is wear to the dark finish, particularly on the ear to the viewer's left. There are a few small chips. The section of cloth beard in the proximate position of the right molars is loose- a few dabs of white glue would fix this. The mask's net weight is 3-1/2 pounds and packaged weight will be 6 pounds. Shipping via USPS Standard Post will be $14.00. Any questions, just ask. Thanks! ShipSaver.
