Three mouths indicated by hollowed-out rectangles asymmetrically fill the lower area. Beautiful patina of abraded use, mate. At the Lea, the Bwami society open to men and women, organized social and political life. There were up to seven levels of initiation, each associated with emblems. Following their exodus from Uganda in the 17th century, the Lega settled on the west bank of the Lualaba River in the DRC.

And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, cracks to back rim of mask. Chips on horn tips, scrapes, scratches, Additional Information: This wooden Mask in Form of Buffalo(Kiyunde) is from the Tabwa people of Southeast Democratic Republic of Congo and Northeast Zambia. This is a large and impressive mask carved from a single piece of wood. Numbering more than 200. 000 the Tabwa were noted as early as the 19th century and today live along Lake Tanganyika. This mask portrays a male wild buffalo called ‘kiyunde’ and appears wearing a costume composed of animal skins and grasses. It dances with a companion mask depicting a female. The Tabwa identify wild buffalo with their strength and behavior with chiefs and their culture heroes. The name buffalo is also given to the circumcised boys. Tacks worked onto the face of the mask in elaborate and attractive scarification patterns and designs represent the Tabwa concept of ‘kulemba’ that reflect aesthetics, social membership and the abstract idea of order upon the chaos of nature. This is a typical and well-carved example of Tabwa Buffalo mask that would stand well in a collection for what it represents. For similar example and further Information see Constantjin Petridis& Franck Herreman(eds. FACE OF THE SPIRITs. MASKS FROM THE ZAIRE BASIN. Fig. 81, p.168. See also Maurer E.M. A.F. Robert

VINTAGE CARVED AFRICAN MASK WITH RAFFIA BEARD FRO M THE LAGO TRIBE OF THE CONGO.
The Congo Collection: 2 old Hemba Tribal Mask Masks from Zaire - African Carving
I personally acquired both of these masks in the SE Democratic Republic of Congo. Directly to the West of Lake Tanganika last year. Mask 1 The small. Sweet smiling round mask measures approximately 6.4 inches in diameter, is at least 35 years old, and does not display much wear from use or handling. But it does have decent age. It sat on the back of a shelf for many years, caked with dust, before I had some one pull it out to show me. There is a small chip in the proximity of the left side of the mouth(from the mask's perspective. If you please) The wood is quite dense and heavy and the mask is structurally sound. It possesses both anthropomorphic(humanistic) and zoomorphic(animalistic) features. But most closely resembles a primate or chimpanzee. Mask 2 The second Hemba Mask measures 9.75(L) inches x 7.1(W) inches and is shaped like ... morean inverted-teardrop. It it is about the same age as the round mask. Is a shade lighter and has some fine age cracks running through its surface. This mask is purely anthropomorphic and was picked up in the same locale as the first mask. The combination of these masks together is reminiscent of the Greek Muses which symbolize"Comedy" and"Tragedy. Their like complexion and other similarities also make them a suitable pair for a special space on the wall. These masks are from present day Democratic Republic of Congo and former Zaire. They would make an awesome addition to ones collection. Standard or Economy Shipping w/in Continental US for a $20 Flat Rate. Damage/Repair, Minor cracks. Chips, and scratches in places, Additional Information: A scarce mask from a little-known people. The Biombo live just to the south of the confluence ... moreof the Lulua and Kasai Rivers. And mingle with both the Kuba and Eastern Pende, who have greatly influenced the appearance of their masks. Reportedly they use their masks during or after circumcision ceremonies. Though this mask shows both Pende and Kuba influence, it has a style all its own, distinct from that of their neighbors. The rectangular mouth even shows elements of the Songye, and is atypical for the Biombo, who normally craft small, pointed, tubular mouths for their masks. The triangular incising, contrasting pigments, and ubiquitous regional features present here have caused many Biombo masks to be misidentified. See Cornet's A SURVEY OF ZAIREAN ART. Vieux Masque africain - Old African Mask / Maske : Salampasu , RD Congo, Afrique
Vieux Masque africain Old African Mask/ Maske Salampasu. Large Mwaash aMbooy mask (helmet) from the Kuba tribe of Zaire/Congo/Africa
Up for auction is a large intricately decorated Mwaash aMbooy mask(helmet mask) from the Kuba tribe of southeastern Congo(formerly Zaire) Below is an except from the Brooklyn Museum about Mwaash aMbooy: Among the Kuba. Masks are thought to be reflections of nature-spirits( mingesh) that act as intermediaries between the Supreme Being(Nyeem) and the world of mortals. There are more than twenty different types of masks that function within the men's initiation society. Moshambwooy is one of the three most important and represents Woot. The founding hero from whom the Kuba believe themselves to be descended. Moshambwooy masks are worn by the nyimi. Or king, of the Kuba or by chiefs in villages. The nyimi's mask is usually made of leopard skin. While those of chiefs are made of antelope skin. The face of this mask is probably antelope ... moreskin painted with a design to look like leopard's fur. The nose and ears are carved of wood, and the white beard of fur from the chest of a sheep represents the beard of an old man. The mask is in extremely good condition given its age(probably from the 70s) with only two small areas of beadwork missing(please see photos) on the back(which one cannot really see because of the fiber cuff around the mask) The mask measures 22.5in tall. 16in wide, and 15in deep. It comes from a pet-free, smoke-free home. US bidders preferred. International bidders must message me first as I do not ship to all countries and will have to get you a quote for shipping(the above estimate is for domestic shipping) Please wait for invoice before paying because the above shipping is an estimate. I only charge you exact shipping costs which will be included in your invoice. So. Again please wait for the invoice. Payment must be received within 5 days of when invoice is sent. Thanks!

TRIBAL AFRICAN SUKU YAKA MASK CONGO EX HANDLEY COLLECTION
Suku Initiation Mask- Democratic Republic of Congo Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Vegetal fibers, pigment, patina Height 34.2cm( 13.5in) without raffia collar Ex-Handley Collection. Los Altos Hills, CA Xanadu Gallery. San Francisco, CA Property from a Private Pennsylvania Collection Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes The Suku create complicated masks which are used by the initiation societies to mark the transition to adulthood. During this initiation period. Which may last a year or more, adolescent boys are separated from the village and made to undergo a series of ordeals, including circumcision, designed to measure their strength and courage. These tests often culminate in the boys' symbolic death as children and rebirth as men. Among Yaka and Suku peoples, ... morethe conclusion of mukanda-coming to manhood rites-is accompanied by performances of kholuka masks. The imagery that surmounts these masks translates into visual form the lyrics of songs that emphasize gender differences. Figural representations of humans and animals ridicule women and celebrate male virility. Contemporary works reinforce generational continuity and male solidarity by incorporating the ashes of masks danced on the occasion of preceding mukanda(Metropolitan Museum, 2011) Note this fine Suku helmet mask comes from the collection of Silicon Valley Pioneer Raymond G. Handley(1923- 2009) Handley developed the first solar powered building in Silicon Valley in the mid 1970's. After his brother. William Jules Handley, became the U.S. Ambassador to Mali, Africa in 1962, Raymond became interested in the country and wanted to make a difference in the lives of its people, drilling more than 50 water wells for Dogon villages through 300 feet of granite during the 1980's. A vibrant, adventurous and highly successful developer of Silicon Valley, Raymond became a keen collector of art and traveled extensively. His journeys took him from the highest mountains of Tibet t

The only elements that related this mask to the Kuba are the goggle eyes with holes around as seen on Isheen Maal masks. This is an innovative product from dating probably from ... morethe second half of the 20th century. Traditional Kuba masks belong to the royal art. And most masks are somehow related to the three main characters of Kuba mythology: 1) Woot(the"first ancestor, akin to Adam) 2) Woot's brother, and rival for the love of 3) Woot's sister-who ended up with Woot. This one was probably made by the Ngeende. The Ngeende group claims to be descended from Ishweemy. One of the nine sons of Woot, the primordial founder of the Kuba Kingdom. Accordingly, the Ngeende are of special importance to the Kuba Kingdom and designated as the holders of the Kuba official charms, Muyum. They share not only a common history but also the same culture and traditions as the Kuba. Even today, they still send representatives to the Kuba-Bushoong court. The Ngeende live in small villages led by chiefs who rule with the council of elders. Understandably, their art has many congruities with the art of the Kuba-Bushoong, the Ngoongo, the Kete, and all of them produce masks. The Ngeende masks tell the story of Woot and other important characters in the foundation of Kuba kingdom. These include Bongo(Mbwoom) Mukenge which is a variant of Moshambooy, Shala-Mushampoji
Primitive African Nkaki Initial Lwalwa Mask from Zaire, Congo
Here for sale is a very interesting primitive African Lwalwa mask from Democratic Republic of Congo. It was carved by using primitive tools and the minor cracks due to natural wood shrink or usage by native poeple. These imperfections made it more primitive and impressive. The first six pictures are closer to real color. I purchased it from an estate sale. Now I am downsizing my collection and other collectors can have chance to enjoy this fabulous primitive art. There is a couple old chips. Especially one on one side of carving probalby due to its usage or age(see pictures 6, 9) Size: 14.5"h X 9"w X 7"t Please email me if you have any question. The Lulua are well know for their elaborate body marking and facial scarification through their sculptures and early 19th century photographs. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. Tabwa masks are rare and little is known concerning their use and functions. The literature points out three types of masks among the Tabwa. The first category is represented by the anthropomorphic wooden helmet mask like this with headdress nicely decorated with diamond and other patterns. Scarification patterns around hairstyle line, in temples, and in cheeks. This category represents the female ancestor(Musangwe) symbolizing fertility. The name Musangwe is related to sexual promiscuity. Our mask falls into this category. During the masquerade, Musangwe is always accompanied by the male mask(Kiyunde) which constitutes the second category. This second type is a zoomorphic mask representing a buffalo. There is no precise information to confirm if these two masks perform the primordial or mythical couple. The third type of masks was discovered more recently. Masks of this category are made of glass beads stitched onto raffia cloth. The functions of these masks are not known for sure. But they all are related to either the Mbudye or the Butwa society. They are probably involved in ritual dances linked to fertility, the birth of twins and ancestor cult in the Butwa

During initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. This is a very small version of the famous Songye Kifwebe mask. According to Hersak(1985: 168) The striated masks. Or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies' public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red. Antique African Tribal Dance Ritual Helmet Hand Carved Wood Mask Ethnic Congo
Submitted for your approval this beautifully hand carved Wood African Tribal Dance or ritual Mask. Wood type is unknown. My father a long time collector of wooden Tribe masks and items. Is my source for this information. He is not a professional however he is very knowledgeable. From the carving methods. It appears to be from 50- 100 years old or more. Also it appears to be of rare size. Apparently carved for a child or small faced individual. Overall measurements 8" Tall x 6.75" wide. Very well fitted to a face with all openings clear. You can see through the eyes very well for a wood mask. The mouth provides plenty of air for dancing or. As you can see the mouth shape appears to have been crafted to accept a type of pipe or similar. This type of mask appears to represent fertility. Oil deposits inside the mask where it makes contact ... morewith the face are visible. All evidence leads to the assumption that this was genuinely used for many years before it was acquired. A very neat collector item. quite possibly a piece of endangered history. Please view the pictures closely& feel free to ask questions. Priced low to sell quickly.

The primary significance of this type of mask is social(a symbol of social cohesion between disparate groups that have no common leadership) and probably historical(the few communities that possess these masks seem to be the originators of the Kind rites in particular sections of Legaland) Biebuyck, D. Mbole Flat Mask Lilwa with Spots DR Congo Africa
Title, Mbole Flat Mask Lilwa with Spots DR Congo Africa, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Mbole, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 14.5 inches H. x 6.75 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, chips at edges, Additional Information: A flat mask from the Mbole. This mask is characterized by its oval form and features that include open eyes and mouth. The surface is decoreted with white and black spots. The Mbole who live on the banks of the Congo(ex. Zaire) River construct their lives around a semi-secret society known as Lilwa nkoi that exercises social control over Mbole life punishing malefactors and witches. During initiations of the sons of Mbole elites into Lilwa nkoi. Figures such as this are paraded during the ceremonies carried on long sticks high above ... morethe new members portraying individuals who have been hanged for divulging the secrets of Lilwa nkoi to non-initiates. Executed males known as Ofika, are meant to be shown hanging resulting in a particularly unique depiction of the body with a thrust out head, hanging feet and the hands resting on their thighs all of which graphically represents the execution of the ‘teller of secrets’. The few sources available on the art of Mbole indicate that masks such as this are known as being worn by an executioner, the Kumi, at the accomplishment of his task. Today these masks tend to disappear because the practice of hanging that they were associated with has officially ceased. The Mbole continue to use a few other types of masks in the ritual of circumcision of young boys and at the funerals of Lilwa dignitaries.
