The zela live in the Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and are neighbors of the Luba. Tabwa, Hemba, Holoholo, and other small groups closed to the Luba. Their art is very similar to that of these peoples. With them, the Zela share the same types of carvings and the same themes, uses, and functions of their sculpture. Masks are very rare among the Zela. Figures vary in size and form and are distinguished by their refinement. Hairstyle like o this figure is the most reproduced in their sculpture. Hole in base Additional Information: A classic Hemba ancestor figure is made from heavy and dense wood. The figure has traditional cross hairstyle. Beard going up to ears. The head and the torso are bigger than the legs. The standing male has his hands resting on the prominent belly. Hemba number around 80.000 and live on the right bank of the Lualaba River west of Lake Tanganyika. They have been heavily influenced by their neighbors to the south, the Luba. Elements from the Luba are still present in the socio-political organization of the Hemba. The Hemba are divided into large clans headed by a hereditary leader known as the"Fumu Mwalo, who administers justice and watches over the ancestor figures. It is only in the last quarter century that their art has been identified as distinct from that of the Luba. Thus, many masterpieces in museums and famous collections have had to be reclassified. Parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo and in Zambia. This cluster is composed of a number of distinct but related peoples, the most prominent of which are the Chokwe, but the cluster also includes the Lunda, Ovimbundu, Lwena, Luvala, Mbwela, and Imbangala. As a result of the complex interaction of people the region has shared stylistic elements and figural forms based upon shared mythologies and ritual practices. The present mask called Mwana pwo depicts a beautiful young woman and represents the female ancesÂtor. Mwana pwo mask appears at the initiation and circumcision ceremonies of young boys(Mukanda) Mwana Pwo also dances at the induction of a new chief. At funerals and fertility rituals, and during public entertainment. During the performance, Mwana Pwo is always accompanied with male character masks such as Cihongo or Cikunza.
