And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, cracks to back rim of mask. Chips on horn tips, scrapes, scratches, Additional Information: This wooden Mask in Form of Buffalo(Kiyunde) is from the Tabwa people of Southeast Democratic Republic of Congo and Northeast Zambia. This is a large and impressive mask carved from a single piece of wood. Numbering more than 200. 000 the Tabwa were noted as early as the 19th century and today live along Lake Tanganyika. This mask portrays a male wild buffalo called ‘kiyunde’ and appears wearing a costume composed of animal skins and grasses. It dances with a companion mask depicting a female. The Tabwa identify wild buffalo with their strength and behavior with chiefs and their culture heroes. The name buffalo is also given to the circumcised boys. Tacks worked onto the face of the mask in elaborate and attractive scarification patterns and designs represent the Tabwa concept of ‘kulemba’ that reflect aesthetics, social membership and the abstract idea of order upon the chaos of nature. This is a typical and well-carved example of Tabwa Buffalo mask that would stand well in a collection for what it represents. For similar example and further Information see Constantjin Petridis& Franck Herreman(eds. FACE OF THE SPIRITs. MASKS FROM THE ZAIRE BASIN. Fig. 81, p.168. See also Maurer E.M. A.F. Robert

They were said to represent the spirit of forest. The Kumu(Komo) live in the Kisangani area and have as their neighbors the Metoko and Lengola. Who they have contact with as a result of their travels to fish on the upper Ulindi River. Both groups have been strongly influenced by the artistic style of the Lega. The area in which they live, known as Ituri, is a dense tropical rainforest of enormous global importance. Unfortunately, it is disappearing at an alarming rate, due to logging and civil unrest in most of the DRC. Their masks, though somewhat rare, are quite popular with collectors because of their dramatic, abstract appearance. They are reportedly used in ceremonies following the circumcision of young boys. The difficulty in accessing the cultures in this region limits the scholarship available, and can make definitive attribution difficult. Hemba, Democratic Republic of the Congo Mask only measurements: 11" tall x 8" wide 36" tall including attachments wood. Pigment, animal hair, bark cloth, fiber ex private collection. US You don't see these on the market very often with the bark cloth attachment still attached to it. This particular mask is a very classic example of this type of mask. I wish I could say that it is old and has had extensive use. But what I can say about it was that it was definitely made by a Hemba carver who most likely carved masks of this type for traditional use. The patina shows some signs of age and wear. But I don't believe the mask is very old. There is a crack on the front of the mask that has been previously repaired and is stable. The extremely stylized chimpanzee masks are called mwisi gwa so'o a term that alludes to the"spirit-ivested object of the chimpanzee human" that inhabits the mask. The mwisi gwa so'o masqueraders wear a costume of animal skin. Barkcloth and the hair of Colobis monkeys. Their raucous dances. Performed at funeral and memorial services, reflect Hemba ideas about death and social chaos and stand in diametrical opposition to the otherwise ordered world of the living. from African Masks from the Barbier-Mueller Collection by Hahner-Herzog. Detailed Wood African Congo Tribal Mask w/Dragons White Accents
Nice detailed mask from the Congo-purchased when stationed there by the Peace Corp over 30 years ago. This mask has the most details I have had on any mask. The mask has an angry facial expression with an open mouth. Bone or some type of white substance is used for the teeth of the main mask plus the dragons. It is also in the eyes. The middle of the crown is a tall piece that looks like a cage but the sides are open. Tassels hang down each side of the face. Even the flowing beard and hair has detailed lines. Detailed flowers adorn the head piece. On each side is a dragon with an open mouth. The wood grain adds a gorgeous look to the piece. The reddish stain helps add to the angry look. On the back there are no wires to hang this piece. There is a groove under the top crown area. There are also openings in the dragon tails that you could ... moreadd a wire. The mask is 8 1/2 inches tall and 5 1/2 inches across. The face has a depth of roughly 3 inches. The piece is in good condition. But there are some flaws. One piece of the"cage" is missing. I don't have that piece. The top corner was broken and glued on so that could be when the piece fell off. There is a hole in the mouth of one dragon and a hole near the other that indicates there may have been something that hung from them but I never had anything like that. This piece is being sold as is.

Nice mask with turtle headdress from the Congo-purchased when stationed there by the Peace Corp over 30 years ago. The wooden mask is carved from one piece of wood and polished to a shine. The face is well rounded with a wide nose and slits for eyes. The headdress sits over the face and appears to come down over the ears. The turtle has an open mouth and eyes. The design on the turtle back is ornate. The neck has a design on each ridge. The ridges have indents that are stained a lighter color than the rest of the piece. The wood grain adds a gorgeous look to the piece. On the back 2 small nails with a string to hang the piece. The neck makes it look like it will stand on it's own but it will not stand. The mask is 15 inches tall and 7inches across. The face has a depth of roughly 2 inches. The piece is in good condition.

Origin: Democratic Republic of Congo(see ethnographical notes below) Provenance: Private Collection. Melbourne, Australia. About The Lega Tribe The 100.000 to 250,000 Lega inhabit the virgin forest of eastern DRC, between the great lakes and the Lualaba River, next to Luba people. The Lega do not possess a centralized political organization, and both men and women aspire to moral authority by gaining high rank in the bwami association. They live in the autonomous villages collectively situated at the summit of a hill surrounded by a palisade. They practice a mixed economy involving agriculture. Hunting and fishing. Division of labor is gender based and akin to the economic patterns of other tribes living in the forest environment: ... moremen hunt and clear new land and women cultivate manioc and other crops. The function of the bwami is to regulate the social. Religious, and political life of the Lega. It is conveying ethical principles and establishing social norms. Circumcision was an indispensable process that allowed entrance into the bwami. It was accompanied by the teaching of proverbs and instruction in the handling of objects endowed with moral and practical significance. The bwami was divided into several levels. To pass to the next level. A series of initiations, gifts, and payments were needed; and this meant that one had attained a certain wisdom and acquired a personal moral sense. The great ceremonies organized for the accession to the highest level would require that entire villages be constructed to house the clan of the candidate and members of the other clans who often came from very far away to participate in the festivities. The objects are frequently moved around in various containers and grouped in large number for ceremonial displays; for this reason. There is no large Lega art. Originally Lega art was primarily wooden. But little by little, ivory came into use. Later ma

They practiced a Ngi ritual against sorcery, in particular, against poisonings. Ngi is the gorilla, a fearful animal, with whom the candidate identifies after he has been accepted into the association. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them and why from that moment I have never stopped collecting. The head of the bobbin or heddle- pulley which is after all only a functional object for the purpose of weaving seemed to me then and today as beautiful as a Greek goddess. The fetish moved me as deeply as the bobbin by its silent tragic dignity and its air of profound meditation. The rare okapi, the world's most endangered antelope, lives in Ituri, as well as some of the last surviving mountain and lowland gorillas. Artistically, the Ituri peoples are interrelated to such an extent that styles, shapes, and coloration tend to coalesce. Sadly, the civil unrest in the Congo will limit research and scientific inquiry for years to come. The unifying factor in Ituri art is a naive beauty and charm, both irresistible and heartbreaking. Vintage Congo Mask Scarification Rites Mid-Century Kuba Central African Tribe ??
Estate Fresh Vintage African Mask Measures 15" Tall x 9" wide x 3.5" 4.5" to nose. Inside mask depth, 3 in. Having searched through multitudes of examples of African masks, though I haven't found this particular example, it seems that this most closely resembles the masks of the ... moreKuba, who reside in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I am not an expert on African masks by any means, but it is a very well-done and striking example. I would welcome any information that may add to attributing a tribe, style, or region. Their carvings usually stand on a circular base with slightly bent knees and hands resting on their abdomen. Sometimes the hairstyle is a George Washington queue. The distinctive facial scarification consisting of a number of lines along the sides of the face and along the forehead and abdomen were the means whereby Tabwa identified themselves to localities and social status. Elaborate and attractive patterns and designs were worked into the skin according to the Tabwa concept of ‘kulemba’ that reflect aestheti

Fine African Art Congo Hemba Tribal Mask Masque dogon yoruba songye senofu lobi
Old and fine wood African Hemba mask. Carved in very hard and heavy wood, good volume) and with a very nice encrusted sacrificial patina. Mid 20th Century. I love the presence and the"evocation" of this piece. A wooden face mask with a pointed forehead. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It is known among the Hemba simply as(Mwisi Gwa So'o, ibombo ya soho" or"Soko Muntu" which means'monkey ... moremask" The masks Ibombo ya soho represent the idea of death when they are danced at funerals. The exaggerated features of the Soho mask represents a creature of the bush that is half human and half monkey. It is a being that can be either dangerous or helpful. The personification of this being depicts the potential of nature and the need to control its excesses through the dancing of the men’s society Ibombo ya Soho masks. These masks are not very large and upon occasions are worn at dancer’s waists or kept in the house to protect the household from malevolent forces. The Hemba monkey mask reflects the ability of the African artist to characterize the idea of life and death in brooding sculptural form. As well as the dancer’s ability to impart the lessons of living within a rationally structured society. Height: 33 cm. 13 in. Stand not included Read Before Bidding I am not a shop dealer.
