The Chokwe people number over one million in population, have spread over a wide territorial range, from Angola, to the DRC, to Zambia. Both hunters and farmers, the Chokwe people once engaged in the African slave trade, and have a history of large and complex social kingdoms. Known widely for their exceptional artistic talents, the Chokwe(a name for which their are more than thirty different spelling and dialectic variations) are extremely proficient carvers, producing highly elaborate and detailed sculptures, masks, and in their more recent history, quite regal chairs and instruments. Normal.dotm 0 0 1 65 374 Full Sail 3 1 459 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false This beautiful example of a Chokwe pwo. Or mwana pwo, theme is sizable. Beautifully carved, and quite intimidating, featuring numerous identifying scarification marks. It has come to us from the Congo region of the Chokwe's territory. The eyes are narrowed to slits as is typical for these masks, which is intended to represent the closed eyes of the deceased. They are pigmented with red, as are the lips, and the pigment has become muddied with age. The mask's hairline is intricately detailed as are the scarification marks that cover much of its surface. The patina is a rich chocolate brown. The piece is in good condition, displaying typical age related wear marks, though it shows few signs of use. It has suffered some damage to the upper right hand side of the coiffure area, but the damage appears to be very old. It is a beautiful example of the pwo mask style. Large and impressive, and will prove to be a beautiful addition to a collection!

Info about Chokwe people: The Chokwe also pronounced Tchokwe are an ethnic group of Central Africa whose ancestry can perhaps be traced to Mbundu and Mbuti Pygmies. Large groups of Chokwe currently reside in Angola. Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their language is usually referred to as Chokwe, a Bantu language. Many also speak the official languages of their countries: English in Zambia, French in Democratic Republic of Congo, and Portuguese(as first or second language) in Angola. The Chokwe were once one of the twelve clans of the great Lunda Empire of 17th- and 18th-century Angola. They eventually became independent when they refused to continue paying tribute to the Lunda emperor. Their successful trading and abundant resources caused them to be one of the wealthiest groups in Angola. By 1900 the Chokwe had dismantled the Lunda kingdom altogether. Using guns they had received in trade from the Ovimbundu. Chokwe language and influence then began to dominate northeastern Angola and spread among the Lunda peoples. The Portuguese had virtually no contact with the Chokwe until the 1930s whe

REPRICED: VTG AFRICAN HELMET MASK CHOKWE , NDEBELE , MENDE ? COWRIE SHELL & BEAD
Offered for your consideration… African Helmet Mask Decorated with raffia hair. Cowrie shells, beads Ì Description: This auction is for an African helmet mask. It has a full head of“hair” made of raffia type material; across the forehead is a band of cowrie shells decorated with alternating light blue and cobalt blue beads that are. I think, made of glass. The face is beautiful, with elaborately incised cheeks, and the mask displays a clenched fist beneath the chin. The mask is approximately 15" high, and approximately 11" wide at the top. As to where this mask comes from. After hours of online research I still don’t know. It has elements of masks made by the Ndebele tribe of Bulawayo. Zimbabwe; and also of the Mende masks, the Bundu or Sowei masks of the Sande Society of Sierra Leone and Liberia; and of the Chokwe tradition ... morefrom Angola. Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia. Condition: This mask is in very good vintage condition. The condition issues are twofold: there is a crack in the wooden face that has been repaired(pictured) and(probably due to careless storage previously) the straw“hair” is flatter on one side than the other. Thank you for considering adding this piece to your collection! Terms The most important thing to me in doing this work is your satisfaction with the goods and services you’ve received from me. For this reason. I request that you read the terms set out below… if we understand and respect each other, we are certain to have a happy and memorable experience together! By placing a bid. Bidder acknowledges agreement to all terms described below. Description and condition 1. I do not claim to be an expert in any area. I always exercise due diligence in researching every item. And never claim an item to be of a particular brand or origin unless I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is so. If I suggest that an item looks like, or may be, of a particular origin or brand, I make it abundantly clear that I am not asserting that it is definitely of that origin or brand, but

Although it features a patina of aging. BACKGROUND OF THE CHOKWE The Chokwe. A matrilineal Bantu population, originally lived in the Serra de Muzamba, in central Angola. Particularly renowned for their fine sculpture, the Chokwe owe the refinement and wealth of their art to a very stable society and a very sophisticated court culture. They strongly influenced the art of neighboring ethnic groups. From the fifteenth century up to the middle of the nineteenth. The Chokwe lived in independent chiefdoms ruled by a monarch of divine right. Realism and attention to detail characterize these sculpted representations that one finds on chairs, combs, snuff mortars, scepters and pipes. Chokwe figurative art includes a considerable series of ancestor figures. The majority are representations of Tshibinda Ilunga or of deceased leaders(Mwanangana) Other sculptures evoke women. And are sometimes kept in memory of the female anonymous ancestor who also inspired the figure of the PWO mask. Most of these female figures recall the woman's important position: wife, mother or sister of a monarch, and pay de

Among the Chokwe female figures might represent a royal wife or could be a chief's wife( Mukwakuhiko) or an honored female ancestor. In this case she might be seen as a female ancestor presenting her descendant. Such figures serve as shrine sculptures. Her stature and scarifications indicate that she has achieved some rank after undergoing initiation in women's societies and is to be viewed as a fully mature woman of some social stature. Most importantly. These scarifications symbolize the fecundity this figure is supposed to bring to the community in order for the living to continue to procreate for the eternity of the lineage. Sculpture from the Chokwe reflects a high aesthetic sensibility in the care that the sculptor gives to the complete figure, modeling and detailing the complex hairstyle and creating a most vivid expression for the face. Ngulu “Bush Pig” Mask, Chokwe people, Angola
Ngulu“Bush Pig” Mask. Chokwe people, Angola Called Ngulu. The pig mask is danced at initiation ceremonies and represents the domestic pig. The mask is danced in an exaggerated manner along the ground or standing up, imitating the crude behavior of the animal, poking about with its snout. Scratching itself and trampling around clumsily. Sometimes it dances in the company with"katoyo"representing the white man) and"pwo" representing the female ancestor) Like these masks it too wears a beaded waistband and rattles. It makes its appearance at initiation ceremonies and other important celebrations. The dance masks are used by itinerant dancers. Who keep them in a basket. The profession is hereditary, and is handed down form uncle to nephew. After the performance, the dancers receive gifts in return for the magical strength ... morewhich they have dispensed to the community. If this does not look typically Chokwe. Remember they are a large cultural group from Southwestern Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola and Zambia, and are made up of many sub-groups with different masking traditions. The Ngulu mask represents the manifestation of an ancestor who adopted the form of a domestic pig. This fine example measures inches 11.5 long. 6.25 inches tall and 6 inches wide.

Additional Information: This standing male figure playing a piano thumb comes from the Chokwe. This is a strong and stylized figure with interesting details such as the impressive coiffure with projections. The body with muscles and the exaggerate feet. A musician figure is a well-known theme in Chokwe sculpture for it represents an ancestor in one of the most important role in the society: a musician wearing the headdress of an early Chokwe culture hero. Musicians play a prominent role in Chokwe society and are often represented in their art in various ways and in very dynamic poses including playing a drum or a thumb piano. And grinding tobacco. The large headdress is that of a senior Chokwe chief. This is a superb carving with a typical Chokwe treatment of the figure stance and face features. This figure was obviously cared for and well used as the brown patina and the softening of edges indicate. This carving has it's own character and presence and would well be a good addition to include in a collection. Recommended Reading: Jordan. M.
