The Chokwe people number over one million in population, have spread over a wide territorial range, from Angola, to the DRC, to Zambia. Both hunters and farmers, the Chokwe people once engaged in the African slave trade, and have a history of large and complex social kingdoms. Known widely for their exceptional artistic talents, the Chokwe(a name for which their are more than thirty different spelling and dialectic variations) are extremely proficient carvers, producing highly elaborate and detailed sculptures, masks, and in their more recent history, quite regal chairs and instruments. Normal.dotm 0 0 1 65 374 Full Sail 3 1 459 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false This beautiful example of a Chokwe pwo. Or mwana pwo, theme is sizable. Beautifully carved, and quite intimidating, featuring numerous identifying scarification marks. It has come to us from the Congo region of the Chokwe's territory. The eyes are narrowed to slits as is typical for these masks, which is intended to represent the closed eyes of the deceased. They are pigmented with red, as are the lips, and the pigment has become muddied with age. The mask's hairline is intricately detailed as are the scarification marks that cover much of its surface. The patina is a rich chocolate brown. The piece is in good condition, displaying typical age related wear marks, though it shows few signs of use. It has suffered some damage to the upper right hand side of the coiffure area, but the damage appears to be very old. It is a beautiful example of the pwo mask style. Large and impressive, and will prove to be a beautiful addition to a collection!

AUTHENTIC AFRICAN ART CHOKWE MASK acquired in Kinshasa ZAIRE - D.R.CONGO in 1987
I acquired this mask from a trader in Kinshasa. Zaire(currently renamed to Democratic Republic of Congo) in 1987. The trader had a good reputation for supplying authentic artifacts. I bought from him quite few items during my visits to Kinshasa. I have started collecting African art in early 1980's while I worked and lived in Liberia. I collected. Both traditional tribal and contemporary art. I continued enlarging my collection when, few years later, I returned to work in Africa, in Zaire. I collected these items for their decorative value and can not vouch that they were actually used in rituals, that did not interest me. The authenticity of items used in tribal rituals is notoriously difficult to ascertain. The members of the tribe who use the masks in rituals attribute to them magical powers and are highly unlikely to sell them. Most ... moreof such items on the market were most likely obtained by theft or luted during a war. Dimensions: approx. 10 ¼" long. 7" wide, the mask weighs 13 oz. Please feel free to ask for additional information about the item or more photos. If you are interested in African art please check my other listings current and future. I will combine shipping for multiple purchases whenever possible.

Huge, Superb, Chibinda Ilunga Figure, Chokwe, Angola
Condition: Patina of long use. Overall good, a few chips and cracks. Sise: approx 36 high. Age: 2nd half 20th century. This unusually large and magnificent figure represents Chibinda Ilunga. The great civilizing hero of the Chokwe people. He is represented with his staff and his horn. Probably emblems of the Portuguese muskets and powder horns first seen by the Chokwe in the 17th century. As always with good Chibinda Ilunga figures, the hands and feet are prodigious, the careful attention given to joints and nails represents power, dexterity and aristocratic lineage. The immense headdress is that of a Lunda noble. The face is alive with energy. With nostrils flaring(mark of a great hunter) and the large eyes staring intently forward. The mouth is sensitive and wide. The body is sinewy and taut. Knees flexed, shoulders raised in an attitude ... moreof tension. As the ancestor who taught the Chokwe to hunt and wage war, Chibinda is always depicted in a state of physical alertness and readiness. Small figures clinging to his headdress and ankle represent his progeny. This tribal figure came from a small village and has seen much use. I estimate its age at around 30- 50 years. It has a dark patina obtained by regular libations of palm oil. However. It is some years since it has been anointed and the surface has dried somewhat- it should be oiled or waxed according to the owner's preference to restore the patina. There are dry cracks in the hands and elseware and a few small chips. Otherwise the condition is excellent. Aesthetically. This is an outstanding work of art from the most strikingly of Southern African cultures. It is a great pleasure and privilege to offer Chokwe art.

SWC-A Highly Carved Chair, Chokwe Peoples, Angola
The country's largest collection of fine Classical& Colonial Furniture. Just steps from the RISD Museum& John Brown House 292 Westminster St. Providence RI tel(401) 272.3200 tollfree(888) 884.5336 A Highly Carved Chair. Chokwe Peoples, Angola This chair is in untouched condition. With its original leather seat. It is in the style of one that was in the Rockefeller Memorial Collection and now at the Metropolitan museum(see below for an image of the Rockefeller Collection chair) While not exactly alike, you will notice many of the figures of men holding hands on the crest rail, and figures on the top of the chair stiles, are all related. The carving on the feet rails is quite ambitious, and covers many figures, animals notwithstanding. The interesting thing to me is the four human feet that support this chair. Which are reminiscent ... moreof the chairs with feet that were found inside the Egyptian pyramids. This chair is complete, with no alterations or repairs whatsoever, in untouched condition, and certainly late 19th, early 20th century. Notes from the Metropolitan Museum’s website: In many societies of Central Africa. Such as the Chokwe and related peoples like the Songo and the Ovimbundu, functional artifacts are transformed into prestige objects that commemorate the power and status of the chief. Chokwe chiefs possess many elaborately carved articles, including ceremonial weapons, staffs of office, tobacco pipes, and seats of office like this example in the Museum's collection. Over the course of numerous encounters with European traders as early as the seventeenth century. Chokwe chiefs appropriated the design of certain types of Western artifacts. The seats of office, or"thrones, of Chokwe chiefs, with backs, leather-covered seats, and decorative brass tacks, are modeled upon European chairs. The decoration of the chair, however, remains distinctly Chokwe in style. The elaborate figurative scenes depicted on this and other seats of office are designed as symbolic microcosms of life and represe
19th Century Chokwe Tribal Mask Relic
Here is a true African tribal relic from ages past. This fine example of tribal carved art masks is clearly that of the Chokwe tribe according to the distinct markings. This example measures 9 inches long x 6 inches wide x about 2 1/2 inches deep. I would think that this piece would be a women's or perhaps a child's mask according to the size. This piece is old and the rope hair braids have since gone away but they are easy to replace. I am thinking that this piece could appeal to certain interior decorators and collectors alike. Thanks for looking.

RARE OLD AFRICAN CEREMONIAL AXE ATTRIBUTED TO CHOKWE or LUBA - ZAIRE/D.R. Congo
I purchased this axe from a trader at Kisangani market in Zaire(now renamed Democratic Republic of Congo) in 1987. Kisangani market was one of the busiest markets I have encountered in Africa. You could buy there anything you wanted to(and much more you did not) That was the only time I have seen a tribal axe being offered for sale and that was probably because it was damaged. Elaborately handcrafted axes are worn over the shoulder by important Luba tribesmen as symbols of status and power. The fact that the blades of such axes are blunt indicates that they were not meant to be used as weapons but as emblems of prestige. The ceremonial axe has been used for centuries by the Luba people much as a king's scepter in other cultures. Similar axes were also used by Chokwe in south western part of Zaire. The haft part of this axe looks very ... moremuch like the Chokwe haft. The axe's haft is made of one piece of light colored wood. Considerably darkened by age patina, with the top and bottom part stained black. The blade is made of iron which was already rusted when I bought it. I have made no attempt to clean it, since it has been in my possession. There is a little movement to the blade in the haft, most likely because of the missing bit of wood at the top of the blade. The first 7 photos were taken in daylight and the remaining, in artificial light. Dimensions:16 ½" 41 cm) length. 8" 20.5 cm) width(measured at the widest point) During the time I worked and lived in Liberia I started collecting African art. Both traditional and contemporary, I continued enlarging my collection when, few years later, I returned to work in Africa, in Zaire. I collected these items for their decorative value and can not vouch that they were actually used in rituals, that did not interest me. All such items, which I am selling now on Ebay, were either purchased by me or received as gifts from my coworkers or missionaries I worked with while in Africa. The authenticity of items used in tribal rituals is notoriously difficul

Late 19th Century African Tribal Mask from the Chokwe tribe
Here we have the free standing Chokwe mask carving which is believed to date back to the late 19th century according to the associated items in the collection we bought and also the reputation of the collector himself. This piece measures 8 3/4 inches long x 6 1/2 inches wide x about 3 inches deep. Thanks for looking.
Rare vintage/antique African smoking pipe Chokwe tribe.
This is a superb piece of antique ethnographic tribal art. With ritual significance. In very good condition it consists of two bone carved heads. One holding the mouthpiece stem and the other making the smoking bowl. there is extensive copper wire binding to attach the bone to the ebonised gourd body. The gourd would have been filled with water to cool the smoke. Probably influenced from the eastern hookah pipes that went back to the 15c. There are what look like representations of keloid scarring on the gourd with decorative copper nails. The item has been identified as a Chokwe smoking pipe. The scarring cicatrices on the heads are identical with the museum masks from the Chokwe- two downward lines on each cheek and the diamond mesh scarring lines on the forehead. The Chokwe number about 1 million people spread through the Congo down as ... morefar as Namibia and have a rich historic culture. The whole pipe shows the unmistakable patination of age and could easily be more than a century old. Without a hallmark or provenance this can. Though, only be judgement and conjecture. The copper wiring is loose on the mouthpiece fixing and there is a slight hairline split of approx. 3cms on the gourd. Please refer to the photos and use the zoom feature for a thorough appraisal. £225 Post and packing free- UK and Worldwide

Exquisite African Art - Chokwe Mukishi Wa Cihongo Mask Congo 0179
Exquisite African Art- Chokwe Mukishi Wa Cihongo Mask Congo African Chokwe Mukishi Wa Cihongo Mask Tribe: Chokwe Origin: D.R.Congo Approx Age: Mid-late 20C Materials: Wood. Cloth, braided netting, veg fibre Dimensions cm: 45 tall x 40 wide Chokwe Mask Mukishi wa Cihongo This carved and elaborated wooden mask is a fine and rare example of the sophisticated artistic traditions of the Chokwe people. A major ethnic group occupying areas of Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia. Chokwe masking traditions, which provide guidance, order, meaning and coherence, have been particularly influential for the Chokwe and among their neighbors. As M. L. Rodrigues de Areia asserts: The masked dancer performs the most prestigious activity on momentous occasions of social life. Namely, initiation processes: mukanda, for boys; ukule, for girls. The ... moreperformance gestures agilely transmit knowledge and learning, integrating the young into the traditions of the group. Embodying the spirits of the most prestigious dead(who have meanwhile become ancestors) the masked dancers are the great interpreters of the group’s collective memory and knowledge of living that bind together all the members of the group. Feared by women and children, they enjoy a special status that distinguishes them above even hunters and blacksmiths, because their performance identifies them with the knowledge and/or ideal of the ancestors and founding heroes of the society. 1) Among the Chokwe. This male wooden mask represents the culture hero Chihongo, who brings prosperity to the community. With its disc-like projection at the chin beneath the expressive mouth and nose with flared nostrils framed by coffee-bean eyes beneath a ridged diadem, it evokes power, which is reinforced by its superstructure, which once supported feathers alluding to and invoking the power of the upper world. The power and wealth this mask symbolizes is further enhanced by its raised scarification detail, and refined red pigmented surface patina acquired through ritual use
Exquisite African Art - Chokwe Chibinda Ilunga Seated figure 0188
Exquisite African Art- Chokwe Chibinda Ilunga Seated figure Chokwe Chibinda Ilunga Tribe: Chokwe Origin: Angola/D.R.Congo Materials: Wood.Animal hair& fur, beaded adornment Dimensions cm: 42 Tall x 13 Wide Approx Age: Mid 20th Century A beautiful and interesting Chokwe Chibinda Ilunga tribal figure. The top of the elaborate coiffure are two figures, around the neck has has a material necklace with animal furs attached and a beaded neclace type of adornment drapped over his shoulders and animal hair skillfully fixed within the wood. This imposing figure represents the hero Chibinda Ilunga. Royal ancestor of the Chokwe people. According to legend, Ilunga, the son of a great Luba chief, wooed Lweji, a Lunda chieftainess. He introduced into that tribe the concept of divine kingship and also taught the Lunda the art of hunting. From their ... moreunion, if rather indirectly, came the Mwata Yamvo rulers of the Lunda, to whom the Chokwe not only paid tribute, but also regularly furnished sculptors who produced many kinds of court art almost up to the present day. By association, Chibinda Ilunga became a culture hero and model for Chokwe chiefs as well. The figure of Chibinda Ilunga came to represent the archetypal chief who maintains the well-being of his people, and he also served as a role model for men in Chokwe society. This figure wears elaborate headgear with rolled side elements as a sign of his royal rank. He holds a staff in his right hand and a carved antelope horn in his left. Since the hunter chief was the most sacred subject portrayed by the Chokwe, such figures were attempted only by the most skilled artists. This sculpture conveys the physical strength and stealth of the hunter’s body as well as the sensitivity and intelligence of a great leader’s face. Chokwe Mortar, Gallery Provenance
A fine and elegant Chokwe tobacco mortar from Angola. Exquisitely carved from hard wood. This piece originally came from the Chicago dealer Michael Wyman, and was part of the collection assembled by David and Clifford Gelbard. The mortar measures 6 inches tall, 3 1/2 inches across, and 3 1/2 inches deep. About Me and My Selling Philosophy I have been collecting African art for more than a decade. Over the years. My collection has gotten too large for the available space, and I’ve discovered I get more pleasure selling things to others who appreciate them than keeping a growing pile of interesting stuff in the basement. My inventory is carefully selected from the offerings of generalist antique dealers. Fellow collectors, estate re-sellers and“pickers” in the United States and Britain. Aside from a few rare exceptions(well-made contemporary ... moremasquerades. Signed works of modern art, etc. I do not buy pieces recently arrived from Africa, since my primary interest is in wooden masks and figures from the colonial period(1880-1960 or so) I understand the value of provenance to collectors in this field. And therefore always seek to provide as much information as possible about an object’s previous ownership history. Like anyone who regularly buys this kind of material through the internet. I get a dud from time to time, but that’s on me. Each piece I choose to list here is. To my eye, aesthetically worthwhile– either authentically used in-culture or, for example in the case of some colonial pieces or objects with earlier collection dates, at least interesting and well-made. Each object. In other words, is something I would keep for myself if my house were bigger and my wife less opposed to clutter. I strive to make my photographs as good as possible. In order to give bidders maximum confidence in what I offer. In terms of pricing. I do not want to keep listing pieces month after month at high prices in hopes they may one day sell, all the while watching them lose value as they go unsold. Unrealistic pricing is th

A matrilineal Bantu population, ... moreoriginally lived in the Serra de Muzamba, in central Angola. Particularly renowned for their fine sculpture, the Chokwe owe the refinement and wealth of their art to a very stable society and a very sophisticated court culture. They strongly influenced the art of neighboring ethnic groups. From the fifteenth century up to the middle of the nineteenth, the Chokwe lived in independent chiefdoms ruled by a monarch of divine right. Realism and attention to detail characterize these sculpted representations that one finds on chairs, combs, snuff mortars, scepters and pipes. Chokwe figurative art includes a considerable series of ancestor figures. The majority are representations of Tshibinda Ilunga or of deceased leaders(Mwanangana) Other sculptures evoke women, and are sometimes kept in memory of the female anonymous ancestor who also inspired the figure of the PWO mask. Most of these female figures recall the woman's important position: wife, mother or sister of a monarch, and pay devotion to a domestic cult. It is not in the facial expression that the woman is evoked, but rather by the combination of scarifications and details of the coiffure. This last-mentioned item a

Chokwe Bullalo Mask, Immense & Grand, Very Special Item
Chokwe Buffalo Mask-Angola Reminiscent of the art of Mycaenae and Knossos. This wonderful mask embodies the power mystery anf beauty of a great animal. The Chokwe make many animal masks, of which buffalo are among the most impressive. This outstanding example is huge(almost a yard across) and carved from a single block of wood. The mask was originally pigmented. The horns black and the tongue red, but much of the color is now gone. Most of the animal masks appear at mukanda(the initiation camp) and are associated with Chibinda Ilunga. The great hunter and founder of the Chokwe ruling line. Each animal has its own qualities. In Chokwe mythology. The ancestors manifest themselves as animals in order to teach lessons about human behaviour. The buffalo is figure of power and restraint, embodying the qualities of a great chief. For all its strength. ... moreThis mask is delicately carved, the eyes, nostrils and other features showing sensitivity against the massive sculptural quality of the head and horns. This mask was worn as a helmet. Semi-horizontally. It would make a wonderful wall display or could be shown on a stand.
