Boys from the same age group(young teenagers) are taken in to the bush for 1-2 months where they undergo several rights of passage into manhood. These involve learning certain survival skills, learning about women and how to be a good husband, learning about fatherhood, and also they are circumsized. The Luvale consider men who are not cut to be dirty or unhygienic. It is said that in some very rural areas where the kumukanda is maintained in it's strictest traditional sense that if a women is to pass by the boy's'bushcamp' whilst they are undergoing kumukanda then she must be punished, even killed. To celebrate the boys' completion of the kumukanda the Makishi festival welcomes them back to the village as men. The night before men from the village take their masks to the graveyard and sleep there, allowing the spirits of their ancestors to enter them. The following evening they appear in the village with their masks. Although the other members of the community know roughly who is taking part, they don't know who is under which mask. The masks represent specific characters: Pwebo(a female character. pwebo' meaning'woman' in Luvale) and Chizaluke amongst others Receive my Email Newsletters for Great Discounts! The Chokwe people number over one million in population, have spread over a wide territorial range, from Angola, to the DRC, to Zambia. Both hunters and farmers, the Chokwe people once engaged in the African slave trade, and have a history of large and complex social kingdoms. Known widely for their exceptional artistic talents, the Chokwe(a name for which their are more than thirty different spelling and dialectic variations) are extremely proficient carvers, producing highly elaborate and detailed sculptures, masks, and in their more recent history, quite regal chairs and instruments. Normal.dotm 0 0 1 65 374 Full Sail 3 1 459 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false This beautiful example of a Chokwe pwo. Or mwana pwo, theme is sizable. Beautifully carved, and quite intimidating, featuring numerous identifying scarification marks. It has come to us from the Congo region of the Chokwe's territory. The eyes are narrowed to slits as is typical for these masks, which is intended to represent the closed eyes of the deceased. They are pigmented with red, as are the lips, and the pigment has become muddied with age. The mask's hairline is intricately detailed as are the scarification marks that cover much of its surface. The patina is a rich chocolate brown. The piece is in good condition, displaying typical age related wear marks, though it shows few signs of use. It has suffered some damage to the upper right hand side of the coiffure area, but the damage appears to be very old. It is a beautiful example of the pwo mask style. Large and impressive, and will prove to be a beautiful addition to a collection!

Antique Namji Doll Namchi Female Fertility Beaded Cameroon African Art Description: V intage Namji/Namchi beaded African doll that has been mounted on ... morean acrylic base for display. Small beads on body appear to have been strung and then cemented to body appearing very old and primitive. One of the more interesting dolls I have see in a while. Namchi(Namji) dolls. Among the Namchi people of Cameroon, unadorned dolls made by blacksmiths are played with by young children. When beads, cowrie shells, bells, coins, and other ornaments are added, however, the doll becomes a surrogate baby for a woman who is having difficulty getting pregnant. The woman treats the figure like a baby, feeding it and carrying it on her back. The Namchi/Namchi group lives in the north west of Cameroon and is famous for its geometrical carved and highly decorated dolls. The girls learn their motherly duties by playing with them. Usually they always carry the dolls around with them. Feeding them and telling them stories from the old ones before going to bed. Condition: Good condition considering previous owner has written on bottom 100+ years. Also marked on tape on base is namji doll, cameroon. There is some breakage at top of head where beads attach but otherwise in quite fine condition. Approx. Measurements: 9" including base. Made in: Cameroon. According to previous owner. Color: Dark brown with yellow and red beads. Be sure to check out my other vintage items on sale: Click on pictures to SUPERSIZE- Please note in bidding. The head and its facial features are typical of the Chokwe style. Whistles such as this were also found among a number of ethnic groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Angola. A hunter would use such whistles during a game to call his dog or to call other hunters when facing a challenge with an animal. In case he got ... morelost, or when he is in distress. Whistles were also used to accompany music and to rhythm dances. In some point, they were considered as part of royal insignia, and part of ritual. One million Chokwe(at least 30 different spellings- all based upon the name these people call themselves. ... moreKocokwe, in plural Tucokwe)have spread out over a wide area in the eastern Angola, southern DRC and Zambia. Their history dated back to the 15thcentury, when a Lunda queen married a Luba prince Chibinda Ilunga. A significant member of the Lunda aristocracy so disapproved of the marriage that they migrated south to present-day Angola. Once settled, they founded several kingdoms, each headed by a god-king. Around 1860, following a major famine, theChokwe people migrated back and settled in Angola, at the source of the Kwangi,Kasai and Lungwe rivers. The Chokwe are governed by a king called Mwana Ngana, who distributes hunting and cultivation areas. The male Mugonge and female Ukule societies regulate their social life. They are vigorous and courageous hunters and agriculturists, who used formerly to engage in the slave trade.Their dynamic spirit is also reflected in their art. There they are circumcised and spend several months in a special lodge where they are instructed in their anticipated roles as men. As part of their instruction. The boys are taught the history and traditions of the group and the secrets associated with the wearing and making of masks. While in form

Exquisite African Art - Chokwe Mukishi Wa Cihongo Mask Congo
Exquisite African Art- Chokwe Mukishi Wa Cihongo Mask Congo African Chokwe Mukishi Wa Cihongo Mask Tribe: Chokwe Origin: D.R.Congo Approx Age: Mid-late 20C Materials: Wood. Cloth, braided netting, veg fibre Dimensions cm: 45 tall x 40 wide Chokwe Mask Mukishi wa Cihongo This carved and elaborated wooden mask is a fine and rare example of the sophisticated artistic traditions of the Chokwe people. A major ethnic group occupying areas of Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia. Chokwe masking traditions, which provide guidance, order, meaning and coherence, have been particularly influential for the Chokwe and among their neighbors. As M. L. Rodrigues de Areia asserts: The masked dancer performs the most prestigious activity on momentous occasions of social life. Namely, initiation processes: mukanda, for boys; ukule, for girls. The ... moreperformance gestures agilely transmit knowledge and learning, integrating the young into the traditions of the group. Embodying the spirits of the most prestigious dead(who have meanwhile become ancestors) the masked dancers are the great interpreters of the group’s collective memory and knowledge of living that bind together all the members of the group. Feared by women and children, they enjoy a special status that distinguishes them above even hunters and blacksmiths, because their performance identifies them with the knowledge and/or ideal of the ancestors and founding heroes of the society. 1) Among the Chokwe. This male wooden mask represents the culture hero Chihongo, who brings prosperity to the community. With its disc-like projection at the chin beneath the expressive mouth and nose with flared nostrils framed by coffee-bean eyes beneath a ridged diadem, it evokes power, which is reinforced by its superstructure, which once supported feathers alluding to and invoking the power of the upper world. The power and wealth this mask symbolizes is further enhanced by its raised scarification detail, and refined red pigmented surface patina acquired through ritual use
Beautiful Antique Chokwe Pwo with significant scarification work - Congo Zaire
This is a gorgeous antique mask from the Chokwe. A large tribe spread over Southern DRC, Angola and Zambia. It is known for its prolific production of sculptures, which included both court art and masks. Masks usually represented spirits and can be classified into three categories: chief masks, initiation masks and dance mask– of which the most famous are the Chihongo(male) and Pwo(female) ancestor figures. The mask here is of the female type. It is made of medium hard wood and shows beautiful characteristics: a round forehead with a small carved hairdo. A large protruding cross motive on the forehead, sharp eye sockets and cheekbones, with long series of scarification motives, representing tears- as well as quite particular scarification patterns on the cheeks(made of a small round with three small lines- as sometimes found among the Chokwe) ... moreThe mouth is large, protruding and showing teeth- and the chin also displays scarification patterns. The patina is of a reddish brown- and darker on the bottom of the mask. The inside also shows a nice patina. This is a sharply cut, strong looking mask with a particularly interesting work on the scarifications. There is a small loss to the right cheek. Dimensions are approx 10x5.

A matrilineal Bantu population, originally lived in the Serra de Muzamba, in central Angola. Particularly renowned for their fine sculpture, the Chokwe owe the refinement and wealth of their art to a very stable society and a very sophisticated court culture. They strongly influenced the art of neighboring ethnic groups. From the fifteenth century up to the middle of the nineteenth, the Chokwe lived in independent chiefdoms ruled by a monarch of divine right. Realism and attention to detail characterize these sculpted representations that one finds on chairs, combs, snuff mortars, scepters and pipes. Chokwe figurative art includes a considerable series of ancestor figures. The majority are representations of Tshibinda Ilunga or of deceased leaders(Mwanangana) Other sculptures evoke women, and are sometimes kept in memory of the female anonymous ancestor who also inspired the figure of the PWO mask. Most of these female figures recall the woman's important position: wife, mother or sister of a monarch, and pay devotion to a domestic cult. It is not in the facial expression that the woman is evoked, but rather by the combination of scarif

Antique Chokwe Carved Mask, Angola-Congo 12 inches
Powerful Chokwe. Jokwe, Tchokwe Pwo mask. This hooded initiation mask is called Chihongo which was the symbol of wealth and considered a male mask. Carved in wood with tribal scarification marks it was used by itinerant dancers dressed in a knotted constume to which they attached false breasts. These masks had different hair arrangements. The carving leads right into the tightly executed knotless netting of oiled vegetable fibers(minjiwa) which form a cap or hood making the mask easy to wear. The inside of the cap is lined with fabric. The knots continue to 3 rows around the face which again makes wearing easy. The circular cijingo scrification marks are carved on the cheeks and a simplified version of the cruciform tribal mark. Called cingelyengelye appears on the forehead. The carved headband is known as lenge. The circular scarification ... moremarks( cijingo) symbolize the sun and male power. Although this mark is the typical symbol of the god Nzambi. There is probably some influence from the old Portuguese cross. It is interesting to note that the initiated had to learn the various dances in which Pwo masks were used although they did not themselves wear these masks. This is a beautifully carved and dressed mask worthy of the finest collection. Authentic 50yr Old Chokwe African Tribal Mask
AUTHENTIC CHOKWE AFRICAN MASK The Chokwe people are a hardy people. It is a testimony to their strength that they went from being a splinter clan of the Luanda empire to being the dominant tribe in a region spanning three countries: Angola. Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. The Chokwe farmed, hunted and traded their way to success and the influences of their transformation can be seen in their art. There are two classes of Chokwe sculptors: the songi and the fuli. The fuli class is responsible for sculpture for the court while the songi make every day figures as well as communal sculpture. Therefore. The fuli class is responsible for turning out scepters, thrones, royal figurines, pipes and tobacco boxes. Fuli artists are hired by the important chiefs and their work bears an unparalleled refinement. The songi sculptors, on the other ... morehand, are more versatile and they are responsible for producing charms, wooden objects and the mahamba statues found in family shrines. Chokwe Pig Mask, Articulated Jaw, Delicate Old Work
Size: approx. 17" high(44 cm) Condition: good Age: mid-20th Century. This vintage Chokwe animal mask. Called nganga, represents a bush-pig and has a deliciously sinister air. Carved from a single block of wood, it was hollowed out until it was thin and light, and easy for a dancer to wear over many hours. Chokwe animal masks are different from the thick, clunky African masks made for the tourist market. The articulated jaw clacks when the mask is moved. Originally painted green. It has acquired a beautiful patina over years of use. It's at least 50 years old. Posted with
