Type of Object, Figure, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola, People, Holo, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, second ... morehalf 20th century, Dimensions, Height: 8.5 Inches, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, old chip in foot to the back. cracks in places, Holo Male Figure Upraised Arms Rare DR Congo Africa Additional Information: This strangely carved figure with a hole carved in its chest to receive offerings or magical substances shares a number of possible stylistic sources with possible association to the Holo people. It must be also kept in mind that Holo sculpture takes much from its Yaka and Suku and Chokwe neighbors. This is seen in the details and style of carving as in this carved male figure with upraised arms. The stance and facial shaping argue a possible source among the Holo. The Holo are a smaller grouping of people numbering between 6-10.000 living in close proximity to the Yaka, Suku, Chokwe and Pende people. Coming from Angola sometime during the 16-17th centuries they are now settled along the banks of the Kwango River. What we know of their art often dates itself to a mid-1950's messianic cult rising during which much of their ritual sculpture was destroyed. Therefore objects either pre-date this event or were hidden during the destruction that took place. Holo had other works and objects such as slit drums, framed figures(nzambi) masks and ironwork that were related to royal elites. At best the character of the piece will stand as a challenge to place among a single people and yet it has it’s own simple sculptural charm as well as magical potential in the cavity to hold substances. Figures like this were used in the cult Mahamba associated with healing. Fertility, and protection. The hole in its chest served to receive magical substances that empowered the figure. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi. PhD. 28341* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorit

GENUINE AUTHENTIC CHOKWE MASK MADE IN AFRICA MASK ONE OF A KIND MUST SEE!
GENUINE AUTHENTIC CHOKWE MASK MADE IN AFRICA MASK ONE OF A KIND MUST SEE! MADE IN AFRICA Mask dimensions: 17" L 12" W 7" D FREE Shipping in the USA This mask was hand made and carved in Africa. Not to sure on what its suppose to resemble. These masks were given to me by a collector that took great pride in these masks. It took a long time for someone to hand carve these masks. Especially if they didn't have the right tools to do the job. These are by far the most authentic masks you will find here on eBay. I promise you will not be disappointed. This mask has some weight to it. The creator must have used very expensive wood, very thick wood with deep rich color. Very nice There are two main forces that influence the style of an African tribal mask: 1. The traditional style that is dictated by the social and religious beliefs ... moreof the community. 2. The individual vision of the carver. African tribal artists do not try to create a perfect representation of their subject. Although some realistic portraits are made. Others celebrate more abstract qualities like nobility, beauty, courage, mischief and humour. They create an idealized version. Emphasizing those elements that they consider most important: COMPOSITION- Formal symmetrical arrangements of line. Shape and form in figures and masks evoke integrity and dignity. TEXTURE- Skilled craftsmanship. Fine detail and quality of finish are of great importance to the African tribal artist. Highly polished surfaces which represent a youthful healthy skin reflect the idea of beauty and virtue, while rough dirty surfaces suggest fear and evil. Many African carvings portray the idealized human figure in its prime, brimming with health, strength, and celebrating fertility or virility. SHAPE- African masks take on many forms. They can be oval. Circular, rectangular, elongated, heart-shaped, animal or human, or any combination of these. Condition: SEE PICTURES

Old African Wood Tribal Art CHOKWE FEMALE (PWO) MASK
Date: 19th- early 20th century Geography: Angola. Xassenge region. Culture: Chokwe peoples. Medium: Wood. Vegetal fibers. Dimension: H. 10 5/8 x W. 7 in. Classification: Wood-Sculpture Wood. Braided and netted raffia headdress; Masoji-scarification marks in form of tears below each eye. Tshingelyengelye-cruciform mark with circular term. Cingelyengelye: triangular marks on the centre of the forehead representing the Chokwe creator god. Nzambi. Mitelumuna: carved on the forehead and extending to the temples. Denoting‘knitted eyebrows’ to show arrogance or dissatisfaction. Masoji: vertical marks carved under the eyes. Denoting tears. Kapile: patterns on the chin. This work is an outstanding example of Pwo. A classic Chokwe mask genre that honors founding female ancestors. Such representations are especially significant given that the Chokwe ... moretrace descent through their mothers' lines. Pwo's joint performance with her male counterpart, Cihongo, brings fertility and prosperity to a community. Inscribed motifs on the mask's forehead and cheeks are classic graphic designs that aesthetically enhanced a woman's beauty in past generations and were signs of ethnic identity. The central cruciform on the forehead has been interpreted as a cosmogram. Chokwe masks are often performed at the celebrations that mark the completion of initiation into adulthood. That occasion also marks the dissolution of the bonds of intimacy between mothers and their sons. The pride and sorrow that event represents for Chokwe women is alluded to by the tear motif. Chokwe Maternity Figure, Tchokwe Angola DRC Zambia wood carving statue mother
With over 30 different spellings of the name of their culture. The Chokwe people often appear to be a more diverse group than they actually are, but nomenclature confusion aside, one thing is certain; that the Chokwe are prolific and exceptional producers of traditional art. Most famous, are their chikunga, or masks, which are also the most powerful piece in their artistic pantheon(from a magic and cultural importance standpoint) but they also produce a wide variety of figures, prestige items, artistically embellished functional objects, musical instruments, and other forms of art. Indigenous to a region spanning across parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, and Zambia, the Chokwe are both agrarian and hunting, with more developed regions of their territory exhibiting commerce economies. Traditional art is still produced in the ... moremore rural regions. The maternity figure is an extremely important form of art produced throughout much of the African continent, and a form of this figure can be found in the majority of art producing ethnic groups. Some are rendered as part animal, some strictly human. Some are produced as clear representations, some are highly abstract. They are carved from wood and cast in metal. To the majority of traditional African women, motherhood is the single most important role in life, and it is commemorated, encouraged, worshipped, and even precipitated by these figures in myriad cultures across the continent. This maternity probably belonged to or depicted a woman of at least some social or economic standing, based on the intricacy and detail put into the seat on which she rests, as well as the detail and grandeur of her coiffure. Age has caused some cracking in the base, but the figure itself remains intact, with minor checking and age-related imperfections across some of its surface. It displays a reddish hue, underlying its patina, and depicts a mother with a single newborn infant resting in her hands across her lap. Traditional Chokwe markings are represented on the mother

A matrilineal Bantu population, originally ... morelived in the Serra de Muzamba, in central Angola. Particularly renowned for their fine sculpture, the Chokwe owe the refinement and wealth of their art to a very stable society and a very sophisticated court culture. They strongly influenced the art of neighboring ethnic groups. From the fifteenth century up to the middle of the nineteenth, the Chokwe lived in independent chiefdoms ruled by a monarch of divine right. Realism and attention to detail characterize these sculpted representations that one finds on chairs, combs, snuff mortars, scepters and pipes. Chokwe figurative art includes a considerable series of ancestor figures. The majority are representations of Tshibinda Ilunga or of deceased leaders(Mwanangana) Other sculptures evoke women, and are sometimes kept in memory of the female anonymous ancestor who also inspired the figure of the PWO mask. Most of these female figures recall the woman's important position: wife, mother or sister of a monarch, and pay devotion to a domestic cult. It is not in the facial expression that the woman is evoked, but rather by the combination of scarifications and details of the coiffure. This last-mentioned item appears to ha

Vintage Bajokwe Chokwe Mask Colored w/Ngula (Red Clay) Hand Carved 1 of 2
Up for sale is the first of two Bajokwe Ngula(red clay) colored masks I will be making available for sale. This is an great hand carved Bajokwe/Chokwe mask that has been colored with Ngala or red clay. This piece was most definitely hand carved. The holes around the edge are slightly larger in diameter on the outside than they are on the inside, and there are traces of red clay in some of the recessed areas of the mask. My estimate would be that this is piece was made sometime in the latter part of the 20th century. I believe this mask was most likely made as either a tourist piece or for use by a child, possibly for use during the initiation ceremony for young boys entering adulthood. I really do not believe that this piece has the patina of an earlier piece, however I am not an expert and will let you be the judge of how old the piece is. ... moreThis piece has a great look and does have a few cracks, and some areas of loss such as along the left of the hairline. Though this mask does show some handling/use wear, it would look great hanging in any room or make a nice addition to any collection. The mask measures approximately 8" tall by 5 3/8" wide by 3" deep. Please note that I am not an expert on African antiquities and would welcome additional information on this piece. This piece came from Opfer's auction in Baltimore Maryland and was part of the same collection that appeared in their March 27 sale on Liveauctioneers(this piece was not sold during that sale. It came from a subsequent sale) This was from a living estate and the gentleman whose collection this and the other pieces I will be listing came from apparently worked a second job to fund his collection. Please see pictures and ask all questions prior to buying. I will be happy to supply additional pictures/information upon request. This is being sold as is. And returns are not accepted. A common theme in African art in general is blending of forms as seen in pole sculptures with the combination of the human bodies and/or animals. Pole sculptures are typically found next to graves and are associated with the ancestral world and death, but this pole has a female on top and a male on the very bottom, leading us to believe it is a fertility ceremonial pole. Damage/Repair, cracks in base repaired with glue. Shallow cracks in places, some oxidation on metal, chips, scratches, ... morewear. Slightly bent. But stands well. Additional Information: This standing male figure playing a piano thumb comes from the Chokwe. This is a strong and stylized figure with interesting details such as the impressive coiffure with projections. The body with muscles and the exaggerate feet. A musician figure is a well-known theme in Chokwe sculpture for it represents an ancestor in one of the most important role in the society: a musician wearing the headdress of an early Chokwe culture hero. Musicians play a prominent role in Chokwe society and are often represented in their art in various ways and in very dynamic poses including playing a drum or a thumb piano. And grinding tobacco. The large headdress is that of a senior Chokwe chief. This is a superb carving with a typical Chokwe treatment of the figure stance and face features. This figure was obviously cared for and well used as the brown patina and the softening of edges indicate. This carving has it's own character and presence and would well be a good addition to include in a collection. Recommended Reading: Jordan. M.
