They are pigmented with red, as are the lips, and the pigment has become muddied with age. The mask's hairline is intricately detailed as are the scarification marks that cover much of its surface. The patina is a rich chocolate brown. The piece is in good condition, displaying typical age related wear marks, though it shows few signs of use. It has suffered some damage to the upper right hand side of the coiffure area, but the damage appears to be very old. It is a beautiful example of the pwo mask style. Large and impressive, and will prove to be a beautiful addition to a collection!

These involve learning certain survival skills, learning about women and how to be a good husband, learning about fatherhood, and also they are circumsized. The Luvale consider men who are not cut to be dirty or unhygienic. It is said that in some very rural areas where the kumukanda is maintained in it's strictest traditional sense that if a women is to pass by the boy's'bushcamp' whilst they are undergoing kumukanda then she must be punished, even killed. To celebrate the boys' completion of the kumukanda the Makishi festival welcomes them back to the village as men. The night before men from the village take their masks to the graveyard and sleep there, allowing the spirits of their ancestors to enter them. The following evening they appear in the village with their masks. Although the other members of the community know roughly who is taking part, they don't know who is under which mask. Katoyo mask appears at the initiation and circumcision ceremonies of young boys(Mukanda) He also dances at the induction of a new chief. At funerals and fertility rituals, and during public entertainment. During the performance, Katoyo is always accompanied by a male or female character such as Mwana pwo, Cihongo or Cikunza. The dancer of Katoyo makes fun of foreigner in front of a large audience. He is very funny and entertains women and children.Miniatures such as this have multiple purposes. Chokwe sculptors were the most famous of the region; there were two types. The songi made jinga charms. The small mahamba figures for the family shrines. And all objects used for hunting, love, magic, and fertility. In addition to the folk art. Somewhat rigid and giving no illusion of depth, there existed also the ancient refined culture of the court, expressed with conviction by professional artists the fuli. They were hired by the great chieftainries and worked exclusively for the court. They sculpted scepters. Thrones with figurines, fans, tobacco boxes, pipes, flyswats, cups, and figures of chiefs or ancestors– all demonstrating a great deal of refinement. They were famous for their large statues of deified ancestors, exalting strength and dignity. The best-known representation of a chief is of Chibinda Ilunga. He was a wandering hunter, ... moreyoungest son of the great Luba chief Kalala Ilunga. He got married a Lunda queen Lueji. Chibinda Ilunga was the start of the sacred dynasty of the Mwata Yamvo of the Lunda and became the model of the hunting and civilizing hero, sometimes represented seated on a throne, sometimes as standing naked or dressed as a hunter. As statues of him were sculpted after the introduction of firearms, generally the standing figure is holding a stone rifle in his left hand and a stick, called cisokolu. In his right. Chibinda Ilunga’s body is stocky, with legs bent, shoulder blades clearly drawn, the neck wide and powerful, the navel protruding. He wears an enormous hairdo, the sign of princely rank. Stunning Tshokwe / Chokwe Pwo Mask – Congo Zaire / DRC
This is an extremely fine antique Chokwe mask from the Kasai region in Southern DRC. The Chokwe is a large tribe spread over Southern DRC. Angola and Zambia. It is known for its prolific production of sculptures, which included both court art and masks. Masks usually represented spirits and can be classified into three categories: chief masks, initiation masks and dance mask– of which the most famous are the Chihongo(male) and Pwo(female) ancestor figures. The piece here is known as the Pwo female ancestor mask. It is made of a light hard wood with a reddish patina. It shows an oval face, with bulging eyes, a very very small, diamond shaped nose, a large open mouth and a pointy chin. Its also displays a series of scarification motives on the forehead(cross motive) cheeks(symmetrical scarifications on the cheeks ending in a round motive) and ... morechin. Beautiful Female Chokwe Mask
This is a gorgeous Chokwe mask that I acquired as a gift. It was purchased at an open air market in South Africa. And later informally appraised by a mask dealer in NYC at $500. It's beautiful, and very striking. In fact, you can still get a hint of smoke smell off it from its original ceremonial use- but it doesn't really fit with my decor and so we store it rather than display it. This lovely lady deserves a home that will give her a prized place in their collection and prominently display it as desired. As stated. The most prominent of these various peoples in this Angolan area are the Chokwe but also includes the Ovimbundu. Lunda, Lwena, Luvala, Minungu, Mbwela, Songo and Imbangala. This is a region that shared stylistic elements and sculptural forms based upon analogous mythologies. They may also share influences of neighboring Tabwa or Luba sculptural styles. Among the Chokwe or one of the other closely related peoples figures on the top can represent a royal wife. It could be a chief or an honored ancestor, a hamba. The figure on this cane represents more likely a hamba. For. The representations of the chief or his wife are more elaborate than the Hamba figures. All these figures are considered to have superior supernatural powers with a protective function. Such canes were mainly held by diviners. A matrilineal Bantu population, originally lived in the Serra de Muzamba, in central Angola. Particularly renowned for their fine sculpture, the Chokwe owe the refinement and wealth of their art to a very stable society and a very sophisticated court culture. They strongly influenced the art of neighboring ethnic groups. From the fifteenth century up to the middle of the nineteenth, the Chokwe lived in independent chiefdoms ruled by a monarch of divine right. Realism and attention to detail characterize these sculpted representations that one finds on chairs, combs, snuff mortars, scepters and pipes. Chokwe figurative art includes a considerable series of ancestor figures. The majority are representations of Tshibinda Ilunga or of deceased leaders(Mwanangana) Other sculptures evoke women, and are sometimes kept in memory of the female anonymous ancestor who also inspired the figure of the PWO mask. Most of these female figures recall the woman's important position: wife, mother or sister of a monarch, and pay devotion to a domestic cult. This is a gorgeous antique mask from the Chokwe. A large tribe spread over Southern DRC, Angola and Zambia. It is known for its prolific production of sculptures, which included both court art and masks. Masks usually represented spirits and can be classified into three categories: chief masks, initiation masks and dance mask– of which the most famous are the Chihongo(male) and Pwo(female) ancestor figures. The mask here is of the Pwo type. It is made of a hard. Light wood with a reddish patina. It shows a round, flat face with small, round, protruding eyes, a triangular nose and thin, slit mouth. The forehead shows a diamond-shaped scarification motive while the scarification motives on the cheeks represent of a cross in a circle. This is a very finely carved mask striking expressivity and naturalistic features. This is a beautiful antique Chokwe mask from the Kasai region in Southern DRC. The Chokwe is a large tribe spread over Southern DRC. Angola and Zambia. It is known for its prolific production of sculptures, which included both court art and masks. Masks usually represented spirits and can be classified into three categories: chief masks, initiation masks and dance mask. Out of those the most famous are the Chihongo(male) and Pwo(female) ancestor figures, although the Chokwe also produced masks representing animals, including the bush pig Ngulu mask. Situated between the human and animal word, it usually represented an erratic and intriguing, often amusing creature. The piece here is made of a medium wood. I acquired this mask from a trader in Kinshasa. Zaire(currently renamed to Democratic Republic of Congo) in 1987. The trader had a good reputation for supplying authentic artifacts. I bought from him quite few items during my visits to Kinshasa. I have started collecting African art in early 1980's while I worked and lived in Liberia. I collected. Both traditional tribal and contemporary art. I continued enlarging my collection when, few years later, I returned to work in Africa, in Zaire. I collected these items for their decorative value and can not vouch that they were actually used in rituals, that did not interest me. The authenticity of items used in tribal rituals is notoriously difficult to ascertain. The members of the tribe who use the masks in rituals attribute to them magical powers and are highly unlikely to sell them. Powerful Chokwe. Jokwe, Tchokwe Pwo mask. This hooded initiation mask is called Chihongo which was the symbol of wealth and considered a male mask. Carved in wood with tribal scarification marks it was used by itinerant dancers dressed in a knotted constume to which they attached false breasts. These masks had different hair arrangements. The carving leads right into the tightly executed knotless netting of oiled vegetable fibers(minjiwa) which form a cap or hood making the mask easy to wear. The inside of the cap is lined with fabric. The knots continue to 3 rows around the face which again makes wearing easy. The circular cijingo scrification marks are carved on the cheeks and a simplified version of the cruciform tribal mark. Called cingelyengelye appears on the forehead.The carved headband is known as lenge. The circular scarification ... moremarks( cijingo) symbolize the sun and male power. Although this mark is the typical symbol of the god Nzambi. There is probably some influence from the old Portuguese cross.
