This is a large and impressive mask carved from a single piece of wood. Numbering more than 200. 000 the Tabwa were noted as early as the 19th century and today live along Lake Tanganyika. This mask portrays a male wild buffalo called âkiyundeâ and appears wearing a costume composed of animal skins and grasses. It dances with a companion mask depicting a female. The Tabwa identify wild buffalo with their strength and behavior with chiefs and their culture heroes. The name buffalo is also given to the circumcised boys. This mask is from my personal collection(purchased about 8 years ago) It is LARGE. A 11 inch diameter across the base. 7 inches of upward carving inside the mask. And about another 11 inches tall. Go get a tape measure, draw those dimensions out. Picture it. made of wood now. sitting in front of you. Several"bolt holes" around the rim of the base. I swore these were used to adhere the mask to a leather shoulder strap and wear this in some"battle" But given the original description/ad i think i may have day-dreamed and come up with an alternative folklore. Please assume the original description to be accurate(see below) Three notable cracks. One medium side one over the left eye/cheek. A lessor one over the right eye region. A third and perhaps the biggest diagonally down the back of the head. All noticeable in pictures. None start/end withing anything closer than 3 inches of one another. Structurally a sound. This particular mask of the Bwa signifies the sun. On of the important components to yielding a healthy crop. The Bwa are scattered across Mali and Burkina Faso. Numbering somewhere in the region of 300,000 people. Each Bwa village ... moreis governed independently by male elders devoid of a central political authority. Major decisions are made by a tribal council of male elders of local lineage. One of the negative aspects of the independance of the Bwa villages is from a military standpoint they became weak against the Fulani and franch invasions, however on the positive, their problems, conflicts and disasters are dealt with more efficiently as no waiting is necessary for commands from some higher authority in another village. Their villages are set up in a tight cluster of mud walled, flat roofed buildings with open central areas where livestock are guarded at night. The village set up makes it easier to defend against invaders. Much of the profits raised from this sale will go a little way to help some impoverished children and villagers in the Moyen Cavally Region of Cote D'Ivoire and Liberia. Bush buffalo, monkey, and bush pig. Water-dwellers include the crocodile, and fish of several types. The serpent, and insects including the butterfly appear. As do birds including hawks and vultures. They have grown very large amounts of cotton since the colonial period, and the cultivating of this cash crop has contributed to the destruction of their traditional patterns of cooperative farming. Agriculture is practiced primarily by the men, women participating on certain occasions only. The blacksmiths forge tools and cast brass, and their wives make pottery. The blacksmith is also the village’s gravedigger and is responsible for digging wells. He is thus the man in contact with the soil; this indicates his importance, his role as mediator in disputes and as intermediary with the supernatural world. The griots weave and dye cotton. They play an important social role and are essential in public events. The Bwa have no centralized political organization and every village is directed by a council of the eldest men of the lineages. The Nwantantay mask, or"plank mask" comes from the Bwa tribe of Burkina-Faso; it represents flying spirits of the forest. Since these spirits are deemed to be invisible, the corresponding mask are shaped after abstract, purely geometrical forms. This figurine is hand carved from wood and is stamped with the Pixi Museum emblem under its base. Figurine measures 6.25" tall. 1.5" x 1.5" at base. Item is in good condition. It is a bit top-heavy.
