At many points in the ancient world, silver was actually more costly than gold, particularly in ancient Egypt. Lot of 3 W. H. Grindley"The Marengo" Gold Band Bone Dishes Search This is a very collectible lot of three early 20th century Staffordshire bone dishes from the W. H. Grindley Company of Tunstall. Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. Normally, the use of the single word"England" with the name of the company indicates a date of manufacture between 1891 and 1921, however this form of the mark is generally believed to have been used between 1914 and 1925. The pattern here is called"The Marengo" and it has a wide gold band at the edge and the apparently hand-lettered pattern name on the underside. Each piece measures between 3 and 3-1/4 inches in diameter. These bone dishes are in excellent, as new condition with no signs of damage or significant usage wear, but significant overall crazing appropriate to the age ... moreof these pieces. This is a fantastically carved ox bone card/cigar case with breathtaking details. The carving depicts lively scenes in a traditional southern Chinese garden park during the imperial days. Numerous e lements include figures. Trees, buildings, pagodas, boats, rocks, cliffs, waterfalls, wavy lakes, birds etc. The many figures are of all walks of lives, from ladies to gentlemen, adults to children, scholars to monks to fishermen. The trees include pines, willows, bunyan, mulbery, plums, magnolias, banana trees and many other types of vegetation, all readily recognizable, detailed down to individual leaves and pine needles. The buildings are rendered down to individual roof tiles and bricks, even the window panel lattices are featured. The two whooping cranes display details of their individual feathers. Like a large scroll painting. All the elements ... moreare laid out in an orderly and neat fashion, neither busy nor crowded. We must remind ourselves that all these mesmerizing depictions are done on the surface of a box just the size of the palm of the hand(see the last photo) What is more. The cover of the box is carved in such a clever way that no matter how you place it, scenes on both sides of the cover would match that down below, even though the scenes on the two sides of the case! What a masterpiece of Chinese folk carving indeed! Imagine the amount of work. Skills and attention are required to carve such a box! Dimension: approximately 5' x 3.5' x 1.1' Condition: excellent. Each piece of this set of four(4) bone dishes measures 6 1/2" in length by 3" wide. Each porcelain dish has an off-white base color with two flower accents on either end.
