Superb Old Bobo Fyng Dance Mask Helmet Burkina Faso 20" H
Superb Old A large dance mask from the Bobo-Fyng people in Upper Volta River region formerly known as Mali and now known as Burkina Faso. This Bobo mask is the type known as'helmet' masks. That are worn on the top of the head with raffia( long grass strands) attached through holes drilled around the perimeter of the base. The raffia hides the dancer. It is worn during harvest celebrations. Carved of a fairly light weight wood, so that it can be worn comfortably for hours of dancing. Probably made in the 1950's or 60's. It has wear consistent with use, but no damage.There appear to be cracks at the base of the horns, but this is where they were attached to the head. This is a superb carving exhibiting the artistâs technical skills while being sensitive to the representation of a unicorn with all its grace and beauty. This mask remind the so-called Nyanga mask When Nyanga masks appear to dance they are covered by a black or red dyed grass costume from the lower edges of the mask at the neck where the costume would be attached to ultimately cover the dancers body to their feet. This mask shows obvious wear on the sides and the holes where the costume was attached and on the inner surfaces of the mask where it was worn smooth through long use. The long use of this mask is evident in the repainting of the mask over an extended period of time. Bobo Mask, Estate Purchase
A dramatic. Large and boldly-painted mask that I believe to be from the Bobo people of Burkina Faso, though it also shares stylistic characteristics with the masks of the Bamana and Bozo of Mali. Whatever its origin, it is certainly from the Western Sudan style region, and probably the work of a Mande-speaking artist. I am opting for the Bobo attribution here because of the rendering of the face and the geometric patterning on the surface. Whatever its exact origin, this mask is beautifully carved, with signs of use and an interesting in-culture repair done with iron staples- a further sign of Mande origin, since among Mande-speaking peoples, most wooden masks and figures are made by blacksmiths.
