Antique African BENIN Bronze Tribal Art Sculpture NIGERIAN Princess' Head Ref: BR220213 This is a large and impressive sculpture depicting a Benin ... morePrincess standing approximately 14 inches(35.5cm) high and weighing 3.9 kg. It was sculpted by hand and cast in bronze using the lost wax process. The people of Benin(now known as Nigeria) are descended from the Ife tribe and have been making bronzes in exactly the same way for many hundreds of years. I am not an expert; it is therefore quite difficult to date this piece accurately but I believe that it was probably made in the first half of the 20th century. Of course there is a distinct possibility that it could be considerably older. There are a few small holes here and there and a couple of larger ones on the head(see photos) There is also some oxidisation. Mainly on the face. Condition is otherwise good. P hotographs form a very important part of my description and therefore bidders are advised to study them carefully and to contact me for any additional information they may need. Superb Benin Bronze figure of a rooster measures Approx: 13" h by 8"w The Benin Empire dates back to prehistoric times. The political systems that were monarchial, were well established before the fourteenth century. The Rulers of Benin and Yoruba had close ties, and by the fifteenth century Benin became and important power in the region. The Benin Empire soon became the largest of the political systems of the Guinea Coast and toward the middle of the sixteenth century; the Oba ruled an area. The above was too much for the British forces to bear and they swiftly concocted excuses- The sculptures must have been made by the Portuguese. AFRICAN TRIBAL AUTHENTIC BENIN BRONZE PALACE EQUESTRIAN PLAQUE 16-17 CENTURY
AFRICAN TRIBAL BENIN BRONZE PALACE EQUESTRIAN PLAQUE NIGERIA CIRCA 16th-17th CENTURY This extraordinary Bronze of the Benin Kingdom in what is now Nigeria exhibits a virtuosity and sophistication of style that has astonished the Western world since they were visited in the 15th century. Their work was brought to Europe following a punitive expedition by the British in 1897. Causing a great sensation. The people of Benin, called Bini, are descendant from the Ife, also known for their remarkable Bronze. Almost all Benin art was created to honor the King. or Oba. These plaque were mounted on the walls of the Oba's Palace and record the history of the Benin Kingdom. Most depict the king or warrior Chiefs. The Benin Empire dates back to prehistoric times. The political systems that were monarchial, were well established before the fourteenth ... morecentury. The Rulers of Benin and Yoruba had close ties, and by the fifteenth century Benin became and important power in the region. With the backing of the monarchy selected artists of Benin developed a special style of sculpture vastly different from the rest of the region. They produced many fine bronze and or brass heads, figurines, brass plaques, and large rectangular metal pictures, which were used to decorate the Oba's palace. The Benin Empire soon became the largest of the political systems of the Guinea Coast and toward the middle of the sixteenth century; the Oba ruled an area. Which spread from modern Lagos to the Niger Delta. Back in the late 19th century when the British forces invaded Benin City. They were overwhelmed to find artistic sculptures cast in brass/bronze. They could not believe the technological sophistication and exquisite beauty and quality of these objects. What they saw was a total contradiction to what many westerners believed or assumed about Africa. The above was too much for the British forces to bear and they swiftly concocted excuses- The sculptures must have been made by the Portuguese, the Egyptians, or the lost tribes of Israel"

In Edo culture dwarfs were known as the jugglers and acrobats in the Oba court. Sculptures dating back in time(14th-15th century) have served as the model for this figure especially similar figures worked in a realistic style using the famous lost wax technique. The dwarf Benin figure is recognized by its over sized head. Its stocky(squat) body, its short arms and legs. The patterns on the torso and on the skirt are familiar to the cast bronze plaques dating back as early as the 15th century. Though related to late works a close stylistic examination make this most probably a late 20th century example of the metal working tradition in Nigeria. This sculpture is a replica of those early classic forms found in Benin and executed with skill and attention to detail. As in many ancient courts around the world, the myth of dwarfs has captured the attention of people. The king Oba court of Edo people in the Kingdom of Benin is not an exception. In ancient time, a dwarf was considered as the magician, the clown, the trickster, or the buffoon of the court. His role was to entertain the court by his juggling and acrobat per

It was situated in the forest area of southern Nigeria. The art of bronze casting was introduced around the year 1280. The kingdom reached its maximum size and artistic splendor in the 15th and 16th century. For a long time the Benin bronze sculptures were the only historical evidence dating back several centuries into the West African past. And both the level of technical accomplishment attained in bronze casting, as well as the monumental vigor of the figures represented, were the object of great admiration. Benin bronzes are better known than the artworks from Ife or Owo due to their presence in Western museums since 1890s. In the thirteenth century, the city of Benin was an agglomeration of farms enclosed by walls and a ditch. Each clan was subject to the Oba(king) The“Benin style” is a court art from the palace of the Oba, and has nothing in common with tribal art. The Benin Oba employed a guild of artisans who all lived in the same district of the city. Bronze figures ordered by the king were kept in the palace. The empire flourished until 1897, when the

AFRICAN ART. An exquisite Benin Bronze plaque in the form of a crocodile
AFRICAN ART. An exquisite Benin Bronze plaque in the form of a crocodile. 18-3/4 x 6-7/8 inches(47 x 17.2 cm) and, almost uniformly one centimeter thick. There are six holes, one at each corner, plus one on each side at the center. The“background” upon which the crocodile head appears bears a classic Benin design of a floral pattern with tiny dots. The entire work has a fine, smooth patina; the reverse, with a dusting of typical African red clay in the inner portions(see photographs) No date of origin was provided when this was purchased because no“core thermoluminecence” test could have been performed due to the thickness of the bronze-only 1 cm. Tentatively, and broadly dating this at 17 th to 19 th century. For a similar piece. See Paul Hamlyn’s Benin Art(London, 1960) No. 35, a plaque with the shape of a mudfish.

The famous royal center of Benin. The center of the Edo people's power and the place of residence for the Oba, the ruler, had produced a number of remarkable objects the best known being the portrait heads cast in bronze and a number of leopard castings such as this. Benin examples of leopards are known as being ritually used as aquamanile to pour water during ceremonies. The age of this figure is difficult to determine however what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze(brass) casters of today who cast this leopard continues a tradition nearly 500 years old at Benin and have not lost their skill in producing wonderful works of art. The Benin Kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king around 1300. But it was not until the 15th/16thC that the kingdom reached its zenith. Sometime in the 15thC, members of the kingdom made contact with Portuguese traders living along the coast, and it is likely that some of the skills found in their metalworks were learned from these interactions. The originals of these castings date to the 12th to 15th centuries and are worth millions of dollars. The present day inhabita

Collectable & Rare Benin Oba Bronze Court Figure, Benin Kingdom / Nigeria
The powerful ancient Benin kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king in the early 14th century AD. It was situated in the forest area of southern Nigeria. 106 miles southeast of Ife. The art of bronze casting was introduced around the year 1280. The kingdom reached its maximum size and artistic splendor in the 15th and 16th century. For a long time the Benin bronze sculptures were the only historical evidence dating back several centuries into the West African past, and both the level of technical accomplishment attained in bronze casting, as well as the monumental vigor of the figures represented, were the object of great admiration. Benin bronzes are better known than the artworks from Ife or Owo due to their presence in Western museums since 1890s. In the thirteenth century, the city of Benin was an agglomeration of farms enclosed ... moreby walls and a ditch. Each clan was subject to the oba(king) The“Benin style” is a court art from the palace of the oba. And has nothing in common with tribal art. The Benin oba employed a guild of artisans who all lived in the same district of the city. Bronze figures ordered by the king were kept in the palace. The empire flourished until 1897. When the palace was sacked by the English in reprisal for an ambush that had cost the British vice-consul his life. This very rare piece shows a king surrounded by body guards, dates back early 1970's. Materials: Bronze. Measurements: 9" X 9 1/2" X 10" Weight: 10 lbs PLEASE NOTE: PAYMENT MUST BE RECEIVED WITHIN 4 DAYS OF PURCHASE. BECAUSE OF RECENT PROBLEMS WITH PAYMENTS NOT RECEIVED. Outstanding Cast Bronze African Sword Antique Benin Mali Tuareg
An outstanding and very rare find. Circa 1700-1800 antique cast bronze sword attributed to west Africa. Possibly of Tuareg origins. Outstanding craftsmanship and detail and excellent patina. See a very similar example at the following site: The sword is in excellent condition. With only very minimal patina/oxidation. The scabbard has additional green patina. In a couple of small places the oxidation has gone all the way through some of the ornaments(pay particular attention to the shadow cast by the scabbard) but frankly we think this just adds to the great character of the piece. It is rock solid and the blade fits snugly into the scabbard. The entire piece is an impressive 29 inches long. The sword is 25 inches and the scabbard is 17 inches. The widest point- the ornamentation at the top of the handle- is almost 7.5 inches. Approximately ... more7 lbs. RARE AFRICAN TRIBAL ANTIQUE BENIN CAST BRONZE KING OBA FIGURE
AFRICAN TRIBAL ANTIQUE BENIN CAST BRONZE KING OBA FIGURE CIRCA LATE 1800s From the private collection The figure is about 19" tall. Heavy. This extraordinary well preserved Bronze of the Benin Kingdom in what is now Nigeria exhibits a virtuosity and sophistication of style that has astonished the Western world since they were visited in the 15th century. The political ... moresystems that were monarchial, were well established before the fourteenth century. The above was too much for the British forces to bear and they swiftly concocted excuses- The sculptures must have been
