AFRICAN TRIBAL ANTIQUE BENIN CAST BRONZE WARRIOR FIGURE CIRCA LATE 1800s From the old private collection The figure is about 12 1/2" tall. Heavy. ... moreThis extraordinary. Authentic, well preserved Bronze of the Benin Kingdom in what is now Nigeria exhibits a virtuosity and sophistication of style that has astonished the Western world since they were visited in the 15th century. Their work was brought to Europe following a punitive expedition by the British in 1897, causing a great sensation. The people of Benin, called Bini, are descendant from the Ife, also known for their remarkable Bronze. Almost all Benin art was created to honor the King. or Oba. These plaque were mounted on the walls of the Oba's Palace and record the history of the Benin Kingdom. Most depict the king or warrior Chiefs. The Benin Empire dates back to prehistoric times. The political systems that were monarchial, were well established before the fourteenth century. The Rulers of Benin and Yoruba had close ties, and by the fifteenth century Benin became and important power in the region. With the backing of the monarchy selected artists of Benin developed a special style of sculpture vastly different from the rest of the region. They produced many fine bronze and or brass heads, figurines, brass plaques, and large rectangular metal pictures, which were used to decorate the Oba's palace. The Benin Empire soon became the largest of the political systems of the Guinea Coast and toward the middle of the sixteenth century; the Oba ruled an area. Benin Brass Bronze Ram Figure Nigeria African SUPERB
Title, Benin Brass Bronze Ram Figure Nigeria African Type of Object, Brass Cast Ram, Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Benin, Materials, Brass/Bronze, Approximate Age, Unknown, Dimensions, 19 inches H. x 21 inches L. x 6 inches D. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, some oxidation on the surface. Wear, dents, Additional Information: A super Benin brass cast ram! In the court of Benin rams were the animals used by the Obas for sacrifices to their ancestors. Benin art is essentially a royal art. Made to glorify the great king Oba, who is considered to have divine ancestry. As noted in the catalogue edited by Anitra Nettleton, Nigeria Art. The Meneghelli Collection(p. 71) such a cast ram figure"is an aquamanile which was filled through a hole in the head. The water was poured out through the nostrils to wash the handsof the Obas before ... morehe made sacrifices to his ancestors. This tradition has been in existence since the fifteenth or sixteenth century. Most castings are brass(an alloy of copper and zinc with traces of other minerals. although some are made made of bronze(an alloy of copper and tin with traces of other metals. Without doing an analysis on each piece. It is not possible to know the content. Benin castings were all made by the lost wax technique, which produces one-of-a-kind pieces.A core of clay is covered with wax, which is then carved into the exact shape which the artist wants the finished piece to have. Additional wax"pipelines" are made for the wax to exit and gases to escape. The wax is then covered with a layer of fine clay. And with succeeding layers, each coarser than the previous one. The mold is then heated. Which melts the wax and fires the clay into a solid mold. The empty space is filled by pouring in molten brass. After the piece cools, the clay mold is broken, revealing the metal piece ready for polishing. See a similar example in Anitra Nettleton(Ed) Nigeria Art. The Meneghelli Collection, 2002, p. 71 fig. Benin castings were all made by the lost wax technique, which produces one-of-a-kind pieces. A core of clay is covered with wax, which is then carved into the exact shape which the artist wants the finished piece to have. Additional wax"pipelines" are made for the wax to exit and gases to escape. The wax is then covered with a layer of fine clay, and with succeeding layers, each coarser than the previous one. Benin Bronze Jaguar Cat Sculpture, Pair, Museum Quality
These bronze cats were hand-forged in the tiny area of Benin. Africa(now incorporated into Nigeria) some time ago. Devilish and cunning, the cats' faces hold more emotion than one would expect from a bronze carving. These symbols of power, wealth, and agility mean a great deal to the tribes of Benin, and are scarcely found outside the region. The bronze artisans of Benin are well-known for their talent and creativity, and the larger the statue, the more valuable. An imposing and stoic presence, not without playfulness. Excellent pieces, in generally excellent condition: because these items are handmade, there are some inconsistencies in form and appearance. The inherent luster of the bronze diminishes slightly as one reaches the cats' extremities(legs, tail) but neither of these aspects seem to take away from the sculptures in any ... moreway. Exquiste Male Bronze Head, Benin / Nigeria
In Yoruba mythology the city of Ile-Ife situated at southwest of Nigeria is“the navel of the world. the place where creation took place and the tradition of kingship began. There it was that the gods Oduduwa and Obatala descended from the heaven to create earth and its inhabitants. Oduduwa himself became the first ruler, oni. Of Ile-Ife. To this day Yoruba kings trace ancestry to Oduduwa. Of all the centers of African art, there is none so remarkable for extraordinary accomplishments in many fields of art as the ancient town of Ife, the ritual center of the great Yoruba tribe of western Nigeria. Ife gave its name to this art. Ife art includes terra-cotta and bronze heads and busts, stone sculpture, stools and religious pieces carved in quartz, monumental granite monoliths, statues of humans and animals. Both the terra-cotta and bronze pieces ... morebelong to a series that has been interpreted by some specialists as idealized portraits, and occasionally a bust or a head has been identified as that of an oni or a dignitary. They date from 12th to the 15th. Ife style is reminiscent of that of Benin. Which flourished in the 16th century. The bronze heads were cast by the melted wax method; their dimensions are near life-size and on some the whole facial area is covered with close parallel lines which. It is thought, may represent body marks of a particular kind. Surrounding the mouth and along the lower jaw, and also on top of the head, there are irregularly placed holes. It is assumed that these were for the purpose of adorning the head with some necklace-like ornament, marking the hair, beard and moustaches. Despite the disappearance of the people responsible for the ancient Ife art, people living on its territory continued to produce artwork inspired by the original masterpieces discovered during archeological excavations. Benin Bronze Head Edo Nigeria Africa 16 Inch SALE WAS $450
Title, Bronze Head with Magical Symbols Replica Nigeria, Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Edo people at Benin, Materials, Brass/Copper Alloy, Approximate Age, 20th-21st Century. Dimensions, 16 inches height. 8 inches width, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, Slight casting flaws and dents in places, T ype of Object: Bronze Cast Sculpture Additional Information: The famous royal center of Benin in Nigeria produced a number of remarkable objects and bronze heads cast in bronze including the original of this late replica that was also cast in Nigeria. Benin City was the center of power for the Edo people and the place of residence for the Oba. The ruler. This bronze cast head is of an Oba, a ruler at Benin, who ... morestill rules today. This head is based upon an early 18th century original and shows a stylized head with magical and symbolic motifs over its surface. Serpents are shown emerging from the eyes and nostrils shown devouring frogs. Four birds stand as part of a crown like headdress most likely representing vultures that are prominent in Benin mythology and religion. The head is a mixture of magical and symbolic motifs known in other examples of Benin art. The modern caster was true to his early model inasmuch as he has set small bits of iron into the eyes representing the pupils and retaining the overall sensibility of the original. That this is a replica cannot be doubted. But what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this head continue a tradition nearly 500 years old at Benin and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. The Edo people asked the ruler of the neighboring Yoruba Kingdom of Ife to send one of his sons to govern them. Known in history as Oranmiyan. In Edo culture dwarfs were known as the jugglers and acrobats in the Oba court. Sculptures dating back in time(14th-15th century) have served as the model for this figure especially similar figures worked in a realistic style using the famous lost wax technique. The dwarf Benin figure is recognized by its over sized head. Its stocky(squat) body, its short arms and legs. The patterns on the torso and on the skirt are familiar to the cast bronze plaques dating back as early as the 15th century. Though related to late works a close stylistic examination make this most probably a late 20th century example of the metal working tradition in Nigeria. This sculpture is a replica of those early classic forms found in Benin and executed with skill and attention to detail. As in many ancient courts around the world, the myth of dwarfs has captured the attention of people. The king Oba court of Edo people in the Kingdom of Benin is not an exception. In ancient time, a dwarf was considered as the magician, the clown, the trickster, or the buffoon of the court. His role was to entertain the court by his juggling and acrobat performances. Nigeria(AUTHENTIC) The powerful ancient Benin kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king in the early 14th century AD. It was situated in the forest area of southern Nigeria. 106 miles southeast of Ife. The art of bronze casting was introduced around the year 1280. The kingdom reached its maximum size and artistic splendor ... morein the 15th and 16th century. For a long time the Benin bronze sculptures were the only historical evidence dating back several centuries into the West African past, and both the level of technical accomplishment attained in bronze casting, as well as the monumental vigor of the figures represented, were the object of great admiration. Benin bronzes are better known than the artworks from Ife or Owo due to their presence in Western museums since 1890s. In the thirteenth century, the city of Benin was an agglomeration of farms enclosed by walls and a ditch. Each clan was subject to the oba(king) The“Benin style” is a court art from the palace of the oba. And has nothing in common with tribal art. The Benin oba employed a guild of artisans who all lived in the same district of the city. Bronze figures ordered by the king were kept in the palace. The empire flourished until 1897. Beautiful African Benin Cast Bronze King Oba Head
Up for sale is the last of the several african bronze pieces I will be making available for sale. This is an absolutely fabulous bronze benin king Oba altar head. This piece was made using the lost-wax casting method. My estimate would be that this is piece was made sometime in the 19th century. I do not believe it has the patina of an earlier piece. However I am not an expert and will let you be the judge of how old the piece is. This piece has a great patina and does have a few holes at the top which can be seen in the pictures. The artisan who made this mask obviously had quite a bit of skill, and the head displays very well. This is one of the most striking pieces that I currently own and will display very well either in any collection or as a centerpiece/conversation starter in any room. The mask measures approximately 14" tall ... moreand 7 3/4" by 7 1/8" at the base. Unfortunately, I do not have a scale however the piece is quite heavy. Please note that I am not an expert on African antiquities and would welcome additional information on this piece. This piece came from Opfer's auction in Baltimore Maryland and was part of the same collection that appeared in their March 27 sale on Liveauctioneers(this piece was not sold during that sale. It came from a subsequent sale) This was from a living estate and the gentleman whose collection this and the other pieces I will be listing came from apparently worked a second job to fund his collection. Please see pictures and ask all questions prior to buying. I will be happy to supply additional pictures/information upon request. This is being sold as is. And returns are not accepted. Which spread from modern Lagos to the Niger Delta. Back in the late 19th century when the British forces invaded Benin City. They were overwhelmed to find artistic sculptures cast in brass/bronze. They could not believe the technological sophistication and exquisite beauty and quality of these objects. What they saw was a total contradiction to what many westerners believed or assumed about Africa. The above was too much for the British forces to bear and they swiftly concocted excuses- The sculptures mus

Vintage Ashanti/Benin bronze. Large- fabulous elephant with man held in trunk.
This is a really fantastic African lost wax cast bronze from the Ashanti people of Ghana or maybe Benin. I am certainly not an expert so please make up your own mind but I think that this is quite an old example. Possibly early 20th century- it is fine compared to the other examples that I have seen. I would love to know more about it if anyone can tell me. It measures 8 cm in height 18 cm in length and 8.5 cm in width. The image is great! The odd looking elephant hold the man in the air with his trunk- it is made in two pieces the man can move around within the grasp. The elephant is covered with fine surface pattern. It is just a great fun image. I think that it is an unusual item- I have not seen one like it before. I shall answer any questions as quickly as possible. International postage will vary so please contact me for an accurate ... morequote. Thank you.
