ANTIQUE AUTHENTIC AFRICAN ART TRIBAL BENIN BRONZE KING HEAD ESTATE FIND
AUTHENTIC BENIN KINGS HEAD BRONZE AFRICAN ART ESTATE FIND Highly stylized Ife bronze head made using the lost wax method. Head shows incised parallel lines and is adorned with a crown. This is a powerful. Expressive piece with some aged surface dark patina. An outstanding piece of history. These altar heads depicting an Oba or King are a major feature of Benin art, just as the head itself is a central focus of Benin ritual. Brass heads like these were, according to tradition, were introduced in the late fourteenth or early fifteenth century by Oba Oguola, the fifth oba, and represented royal ancestors. These heads were typically placed on altars dedicated to each of the past Oba's of Benin. The altars are semicircular mud platforms that have been packed hard and rubbed smooth and are located in open coutyards of the palace. The royal ... morealtars are setting for one of the two most important rites of divine kingship in Benin. When the Oba honors the spirit of his late father and performs sacrifices to the royal ancestors and to the earth in which they are buried. Acknowledging his role as his fathers successor, the chiefs pay homage to the king and greet him in order of seniority. The rite expresses the continuity of diving kingship, and the altar before which it takes place provides the means by which the connection between the living king and his predecessors in made Ethnic Group: Edo People. SUPERB OLD AFRICAN BENIN BRONZE SOLDIER WARRIOR Lost Wax Casting
Benin Bronze Soldier/Warrior Lost Wax Casting. 7.5 inches tall Solid! 1 1/2 pounds of solid Bronze! He leans backwards a little bit. So I lean him against the wall of my case. He can stand on his own, but it depends on where you put him. Benin lost-wax castings The exquisite Benin lost-wax castings are a fine example of one of the most famous metalworking traditions in world history. One can only imagine the true splendor of the old court of Benin. The story of the famous metal castings from the ancient Kingdom of Benin and the city of Ife. Produced to honor their king or"Oba, is both fascinating and sad. Known by European explorers as early as the 15th century, the remarkable skill of the brassworker's guilds of the ancient Kingdom of Benin became known throughout the civilized world, making the original heads, plaques, and full ... morefigures the earliest pieces of collected African art. The final assault to this proud and powerful kingdom occurred in 1897, when the British, in an effort to seize more control over important trade routes, routed the city of Ife and seized almost all of the existing bronze and brass masterpieces. The bronze casting techniques are very difficult. First the item was made from wax. Then it is cast with clay to make a mold. Inside the mold. Molten bronze is poured and hardens. I am an artist and I tried to do this kind of art. The wax was very difficult to work with and I was indoors in a modern facility. It was either too soft or too hard and I just could not get the hang of it. I am so amazed when I see Antique bronze made in Africa! They did not have electricity. Or air-conditioning or any modern convenience! Just beautiful patina too! Perfect for any collector! Happy Bidding!
Benin Bronze Figure of Oba on Pedestal Nigeria African
Title, Benin Bronze Figure of Oba On Pedestal Nigeria African Type of Object, Cast figure miniature, Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Edo People at Benin, Materials, Brass- Bronze, Approximate Age, Unknown 20th century, Dimensions, 16.5 inches H. x 9.5 inches W. x 6.5 inches d. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, wear. Some oxidation, Additional Information: A cast bronze figure. Representation of the king Oba cast standing on a four-legged stool/ pedestal, wearing a ceremonial garment and headdress, a prestigious coral collar, prestigious bracelets and anklets, and a traditional skirt. This figure is a replica of the early classic cast bronze figures of Oba and is executed with skill and attention to details. This 20th century example indicates that Nigerian blacksmiths have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art ... morethat continue a tradition of 500 years old. Benin art is royal art. Made to glorify the great king or Oba, who is considered to have divine ancestry. The brass casters guild historically worked primarily for the monarchy, with smaller pieces being available to chiefs. It has been in existence since the fifteenth or sixteenth century. Most castings are brass(an alloy of copper and zinc with traces of other metals) although some were made out of bronze(an alloy of copper and tin with traces of other metals) Without doing an analysis on each piece, it is not possible to know the exact used material. Benin castings were all made by the lost wax technique, which produces one-of-a-kind pieces. A core of clay is covered with wax, which is then carved into the exact shape which the artist wants the finished piece to have. Additional wax"pipelines" are made for the wax to exit and gases to escape. The wax is then covered with a layer of fine clay, and with succeeding layers, each coarser than the previous one. The mold is then heated, which melts the wax and fires the clay into a solid mold. The empty space is filled by pouring in molten brass. After the piece cools, the clay

Title, Edo Benin Plaque with Three Court Attendants, Type of Object, Bronze/Brass Cast Plaque, Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Edo, Materials, Brass-Bronze, Approximate Age, Unknown 20 century replica based upon plaques dating to 1550 to 1650. Dimensions, 9 inches H. X 9 inches W. Overall Condition, Good Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, small hole in King's face. Rusting surface, Additional Information: Bronze plaques with figures of ... moreattendants at the palace of the Oba the ruler of Benin. The capital city of the Edo people in Nigeria as early as the mid 1600s. The plaques which were attached to pillars in various rooms of the palace. Are conservatively dated to have been made as early as 1550 to the 1650 and apparently fell out of use sometime in the early 1700s. These wonderfully sculpted plaques show ritual and ceremonial events and it is argued by some that they portray historical events and personages. See Ezra. Royal Art of Benin, 1997, for a full discussion of dates and use of the plaques. Brass plaques were cast in high relief using the lost wax technique in combining copper with lead. The russet brown color of the surface comes from the rich red laterite soil of the Benin region. This plaque reflects the technique and high quality of brass casting known a Benin from the 1500s onwards. The wax is modeled to shape the figures and the flat sheet background was decorated with dots and the leaves known as ebe-ame. Used in healing. Benin City was the center of power for the great Edo kingdom from the 1300s to 1897 when the kingdom was overthrown by the British and the Oba exiled. The king returned in 1934

Origin: Kingdom of Benin/ Nigeria Statue: Warrior on Horseback Year/Period: Mid 16th Century Material: Bronze Measurements: 22 inches Tall- 16 inches Long- 6 1/2 inches Wide- 20.3 pounds(9200 grams) Description: Oral tradition relates that when each king(Oba) of Benin died. His head was dispatched to Ife for burial, and a brass head was sent from Ife to be placed on the altar of his ancestors. Towards the end of the 14th century, however, the Oba of Benin requested the Oni of Ife to send a foundry worker to teach his people how to produce their own commemorative ... moreheads of the sovereign. In reality, the oldest bronze heads of Benin are somewhat different from those of Ife. This is probably explained by the fact that when the technique of casting was introduced, the Benin style was already mature. Benin art continued to evolve until 1897, when British soldiers ransacked and destroyed the Nigerian city. A treasury of brass and ivory objects was recovered from the palace before it caught fire, and this found its way to England, where the treasures were later dispersed among various museums in the West. Benin art is conventionally subdivided into three stylistic phases. The early period is prior to the changes in Benin art that resulted from European trading in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, and the middle period spans the 16th and 17th centuries. Together, these two periods include the works that Europeans regard as being of greatest aesthetic value. In the late period, which dates from the 18th century to the British conquest, there was an increase in the size of the objects produced, and in the standardization of style. Our Price: $795 O.B.O. Benin Bronze Horn-Blower Trumpeter Nigeria African
Title, Benin Bronze Horn-Blower Trumpeter Nigeria African Type of Object, Bronze or brass Figure Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Edo Materials, bronze or brass. Approximate Age, Unknown, Dimensions, 6.5 inches H. Overall Condition, Good. Damage/Repair, chipped base. Surface oxidation, Additional Information: Horn-blowers or trumpeters playing trumpets were essential parts of the retinue of the Oba(King) and important chiefs and warriors in Benin the well known early kingdom of Benin. Sculptures dating back in time may have served as the model for this figure especially similar figures worked onto the famous plaques from Benin. Though related to early works close stylistic examination make this most probably a late example that continues the metal working tradition in Nigeria. Benin art is royal art. Made to glorify the great king, or ... moreOBA, who is considered to have divine ancestry. The brass casters guild historically worked primarily for the monarchy, with pieces being available to chiefs. This tradition has been in existence since the fifteenth or sixteenth century. Most castings are brass(an alloy of copper and zinc with traces of other minerals. although some are made of bronze(an alloy of copper and tin with traces of other metals) Without doing an analysis on each piece. It is not possible to know the content. Benin castings were all made by the lost wax technique, which produces one-of-a-kind pieces. A core of wax is covered with clay. The wax is carved into the exact shape which the artist wants the finished piece to have. Additional wax"pipelines" are made for the wax to exit and gases to escape. The wax is then covered with a layer of fine clay. And with succeeding layers, each coarser than the previous one. The mold is then heated, which melts the wax and fires the clay into a solid mold. The empty space is filled by pouring in molten brass. After the piece cools, the clay mold is broken, revealing the metal piece ready for polishing. Recommended Reading: Augustus Pitt-Rivers. Exceptionally Rare Vintage Mid-Century Bearded Male BENIN BRONZE MASK
Exceptionally Rare Mid-Century Bearded Male BENIN BRONZE MASK. The Representation of the Europeanized Bearded Man is a Desirable and Atypical Form. From a Nicely Chosen Boston Collection. Measures About 10" in Height. The powerful ancient Benin kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king in the early 14th century AD. It was situated in the forest area of southern Nigeria. 106 miles southeast of Ife. The art of bronze casting was introduced around the year 1280. The kingdom reached its maximum size and artistic splendor in the 15th and 16th century. For a long time the Benin bronze sculptures were the only historical evidence dating back several centuries into the West African past, and both the level of technical accomplishment attained in bronze casting, as well as the monumental vigor of the figures represented, were the object of ... moregreat admiration. Benin bronzes are better known than the artworks from Ife or Owo due to their presence in Western museums since 1890s. In the thirteenth century, the city of Benin was an agglomeration of farms enclosed by walls and a ditch. Each clan was subject to the oba(king) The“Benin style” is a court art from the palace of the oba. And has nothing in common with tribal art. The Benin oba employed a guild of artisans who all lived in the same district of the city. Bronze figures ordered by the king were kept in the palace. The empire flourished until 1897. When the palace was sacked by the English in reprisal for an ambush that had cost the British vice-consul his life. The numerous commemorative brass heads. Free-standing figures and groups, plaques in relief, bells and rattle-staffs, small expressive masks and plaquettes worn on the belt as emblem of offices; chests in the shape of palaces, animals, cult stands, jewelry, etc. cast by Benin metalworkers were created for the royal palace. The heads were placed on the altars of kings, of brass caster corporation chiefs and dignitaries. The altar functioned as a tribute to the deceased and a point of contact with his spiri

SALE: Benin Bronze Head African Lost Wax Cast Sculpture Oba Bust from Edo People
Gorgeous Benin Bronze Bust made using the traditional lost wax casting technique(I highly recommend viewing this for a precursory view of the technique) Benin Bronze heads have always been prized for their fine casting technique and realistic features. The art of making these heads dates back hundreds of years to when the Edo made them to adorn the royal palace and usually represent different royalty and high ranking members of society; this one more than likely representing a queen mother. Though much newer the piece is particularly stunning and shows a wonderfully mastery of the casting technique. This bust measures 16.25 inches tall by about 7 in wide making it slightly smaller than a life size head. It is in excellent shape with no breakage and normal aging and would be a great addition to any collection. Please email with any questions ... moreand please take at my other sales! Exquiste & Outstanding Ife Bronze Head, Benin / Nigeria
In Yoruba mythology the city of Ile-Ife situated at southwest of Nigeria is“the navel of the world. the place where creation took place and the tradition of kingship began. There it was that the gods Oduduwa and Obatala descended from the heaven to create earth and its inhabitants. Oduduwa himself became the first ruler, oni. Of Ile-Ife. To this day Yoruba kings trace ancestry to Oduduwa. Of all the centers of African art, there is none so remarkable for extraordinary accomplishments in many fields of art as the ancient town of Ife, the ritual center of the great Yoruba tribe of western Nigeria. Ife gave its name to this art. Ife art includes terra-cotta and bronze heads and busts, stone sculpture, stools and religious pieces carved in quartz, monumental granite monoliths, statues of humans and animals. Both the terra-cotta and bronze pieces ... morebelong to a series that has been interpreted by some specialists as idealized portraits, and occasionally a bust or a head has been identified as that of an oni or a dignitary. They date from 12th to the 15th. Ife style is reminiscent of that of Benin. Which flourished in the 16th century. The bronze heads were cast by the melted wax method; their dimensions are near life-size and on some the whole facial area is covered with close parallel lines which. It is thought, may represent body marks of a particular kind. Surrounding the mouth and along the lower jaw, and also on top of the head, there are irregularly placed holes. It is assumed that these were for the purpose of adorning the head with some necklace-like ornament, marking the hair, beard and moustaches. Despite the disappearance of the people responsible for the ancient Ife art, people living on its territory continued to produce artwork inspired by the original masterpieces discovered during archeological excavations. African Benin Bronze Mask/Sculpture/Statue, Coil-Method, Diabolic Jester
Folks. I deal in wooden carved masks- this little guy came to me in a lot of other masks. I am not the expert on this one. My preliminary research is suggestive that this is African. Probably Nigerian and likely Benin The original heavy. Dark, black sand is still within the item from its original casting. One can see the original clay-coil marks from the clay form that was likely created before this metal counterpart was formed The details on the item seem fine/intricate There are some half-moon cut-outs behind the ears seemingly to help the heat exchange during its formation The item appears to be representative of a Devil given the horns. The pinnacles on the hat remind me of a jester's hat. One of these tongs appears to be broken(see pics)

Nigerian Bronze Benin Queen Mother Head
This was found at an antique store where the owner had passed away. I do not know how old it is. It is a bronze(a magnet will not stick to it) head of a Benin Queen Mother. Current leaders of the kingdom of Benin(present day Nigeria) trace their origins to a ruling dynasty that began in the 14th Century. Bronze and brass commemorative heads were commissioned by each king(Oba) The cylindrical shape and addition of bead clusters to the crown identify the head as being from the 18th Century. Queen Mother heads are known to have a forward pointing peak-known as a"chicken's beak" worn by high ranking Edo women. There is a circle at the top that held an ivory tusk. The flanges around the base are less ornate than the kings. The raised marks above the eyes are called ikharo and are believed to represent scarification marks. The men ... morewould have three and the women and foreigners would have four. Near the top. In the back, about 1 1/2" down there is a small hole-I'm not sure if this can be seen in the pictures. There is also a small hole in the front at the top. If you are interested, I will get a better picture for you. It weighs 8 pounds and measures 11" x approximately 7" Please feel free to ask questions. I will answer to the best of my ability. Payment is expected within two days of auctions end. RARE AFRICAN TRIBAL ANTIQUE BENIN CAST BRONZE KING OBA ON HORSEBACK FIGURE
AFRICAN TRIBAL ANTIQUE BENIN CAST BRONZE KING OBA FIGURE CIRCA LATE 1800s From the private collection The figure is about 12 1/2" x 8 1/2" Heavy. This extraordinary well preserved Bronze of the Benin Kingdom in what is now Nigeria exhibits a virtuosity and sophistication of style that has astonished the Western world since they were visited in the 15th century. Their work was brought to Europe following a punitive expedition by the British in 1897. Causing a great sensation. The people of Benin, called Bini, are descendant from the Ife, also known for their remarkable Bronze. Almost all Benin art was created to honor the King. or Oba and Queen Mothers. The Benin Kingdom was strong through out the 15th and 16th Centuries and was located in West Africa bordering what is now Nigeria and Togo. Benin Clans were ruled by a King which ... morewas known as the Oba and who was the divine ruler of the Benin people. The people of Benin are called Bini and are descended from the Ife peoples. The Benin Empire soon became the largest of the political systems of the Guinea Coast and toward the middle of the sixteenth century; the Oba ruled an area. Which spread from modern Lagos to the Niger Delta. Back in the late 19th century when the British forces invaded Benin City. They were overwhelmed to find artistic sculptures cast in brass/bronze. They could not believe the technological sophistication and exquisite beauty and quality of these objects.
