Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Wear. Oxidation on the surface, casting flaws, Additional Information: A superb bronze well cast head of Oba from Benin with ceremonial headdress and elaborate coral collar. This is a commemorative piece placed in a chief's altar. The famous royal center of Benin in Nigeria produced a number of remarkable objects and bronze heads cast in bronze including the original of this late replica that was also cast in Nigeria. Benin City was the center of power for the Edo people and the place of residence for the Oba. The ruler. This is a head of an Oba based upon a 14th-15th century original and is a stylized portrait of a man at the Court of Benin. That this is a replica cannot be doubted. But what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this head continue a tradition nearly 500 years old at Benin and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. Benin heads were kept on altars. For exquisite examples of heds. And an article on them. Benin art is royal art, made to glorify the great king, or OBA, who is considered to have divine ancestry. The brass casters guild historically worked primarily for the monarchy, with smaller pieces being available to chiefs. It has been in existence since the fifteenth or sixteenth century. Most castings are brass(an alloy

AFRICAN TRIBAL ANTIQUE BENIN CAST BRONZE WARRIOR FIGURE CIRCA LATE 1800s From the old private collection The figure is about 12 1/2" tall. Heavy. ... moreThis extraordinary. Authentic, well preserved Bronze of the Benin Kingdom in what is now Nigeria exhibits a virtuosity and sophistication of style that has astonished the Western world since they were visited in the 15th century. Their work was brought to Europe following a punitive expedition by the British in 1897, causing a great sensation. The people of Benin, called Bini, are descendant from the Ife, also known for their remarkable Bronze. Almost all Benin art was created to honor the King. or Oba. These plaque were mounted on the walls of the Oba's Palace and record the history of the Benin Kingdom. Most depict the king or warrior Chiefs. The Benin Empire dates back to prehistoric times. The political systems that were monarchial, were well established before the fourteenth century. The Rulers of Benin and Yoruba had close ties, and by the fifteenth century Benin became and important power in the region. With the backing of the monarchy selected artists of Benin developed a special style of sculpture vastly different from the rest of the region. They produced many fine bronze and or brass heads, figurines, brass plaques, and large rectangular metal pictures, which were used to decorate the Oba's palace. The Benin Empire soon became the largest of the political systems of the Guinea Coast and toward the middle of the sixteenth century; the Oba ruled an area. Which spread from modern Lagos to the Niger Delta. Back in the late 19th century when the British forces invaded Benin City. They were overwhelmed to find artistic sculptures cast in brass/bronze. They could not believe the technological sophistication and exquisite beauty and quality of these objects. What they saw was a total contradiction to what many westerners believed or assumed about Africa. The above was too much for the British forces to bear and they swiftly concocted excuses- The sculptu

Title, Benin Bronze Figure Oba Court Dwarf Edo People Nigeria, Type of Object, Benin Bronze, Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Edo people from Benin ... moreKingdom, Materials, bronze, Approximate Age, Unknown, Dimensions, 28 inches height x 11 inches width x 9 inches depth, Overall Condition, Fair to good. Most ofour pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners. Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, casting flaws. Small holes, leg bent badly but still stands, large hole/crack in between legs, small dents and scrapes, Additional Information: The figure represents a dwarf at the court of Benin. In Edo culture dwarfs were known as the jugglers and acrobats in the Oba court. Sculptures dating back in time(14th-15th century) have served as the model for this figure especially similar figures worked in a realistic style using the famous lost wax technique. The dwarf Benin figure is recognized by its over sized head. Its stocky(squat) body, its short arms and legs. The patterns on the torso and on the skirt are familiar to the cast bronze plaques dating back as early as the 15th century. Though related to late works a close stylistic examination make this most probably a late 20th century example of the metal working tradition in Nigeria. This sculpture is a replica of those early classic forms found in Benin and executed with skill and attention to detail. As in many ancient courts around the world, the myth of dwarfs has captured the attention of people. The king Oba court of Edo people in the Kingdom of Benin is not an exception. In ancient time, a dwarf was considered as the magician, the clown, the trickster, or the buffoon of the court. His role was to entertain the court by his juggling and acrobat per

The capital city of the Edo people in Nigeria as early as the mid 1600s. The plaques which were attached to pillars in various rooms of the palace. Are conservatively dated to have been made as early as 1550 to the 1650 and apparently fell out of use sometime in the early 1700s. These wonderfully sculpted plaques show ritual and ceremonial events and it is argued by some that they portray historical events and personages. See Ezra. The russet brown color of the surface comes from the rich red laterite soil of the Benin region. This plaque reflects the technique and high quality of brass casting known a Benin from the 1500s onwards. The wax is modeled to shape the figures and the flat sheet background was decorated with dots and the leaves known as ebe-ame. Used in healing. It was situated in the forest area of southern Nigeria. 106 miles southeast of Ife. The art of bronze casting was introduced around the year 1280. The kingdom reached its maximum size and artistic splendor in the 15th and 16th century. For a long time the Benin bronze sculptures were the only historical evidence dating back several centuries into the West African past, and both the level of technical accomplishment attained in bronze casting, as well as the monumental vigor of the figures represented, were the object of great admiration. The Benin oba employed a guild of artisans who all lived in the same district of the city. Bronze figures ordered by the king were kept in the palace. The empire flourished until 1897. Free-standing figures and groups, plaques in relief, bells and rattle-staffs, small expressive masks and plaquettes worn on the belt as emblem of offices; chests in the shape of palaces, animals, cult stands, jewelry, etc. cast by Benin metalworkers were created for the royal palace. The heads were placed on the altars of kings, of brass caster corporation chiefs and dignitaries. Occasionally, a brass head was surmounted by a carved iv. tusk engraved with a procession of different obas. The altar functioned as a tribute to the deceased and a point of contact with his spirit. The famous royal center of Benin. The center of the Edo people's power and the place of residence for the Oba, the ruler, had produced a number of remarkable objects the best known being the portrait heads cast in bronze and a number of leopard castings such as this. Benin examples of leopards are known as being ritually used as aquamanile to pour water during ceremonies. The age of this figure is difficult to determine however what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze(brass) casters of today who cast this leopard continues a tradition nearly 500 years old at Benin and have not lost their skill in producing wonderful works of art. The Benin Kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king around 1300. But it was not until the 15th/16thC that the kingdom reached its zenith. Sometime in the 15thC, members of the kingdom made contact with Portuguese traders living along the coast, and it is likely that some of the skills found in their metalworks were learned from these interactions. The originals of these castings date to the 12th to 15th

IFE BRONZE BUST OF A KING - BENIN
IFE BRONZE BUST OF A KING The region of Ife in Nigeria has become known for the naturalism of its art in comparison to the stylized art of other African regions. The area also produced terracotta sculptures. Clay, wood, bronze, and even in quartz. The Yoruba tribe regarded Ife as their place of origin as told in the creation myths. The craftsmanship of Ife was later passed on to the kingdom of Benin, which being closer to the sea was better known to early European travelers. The later history of Ife is not yet well documented except for the beautiful bronze busts of kings such as this one. This beautifully sculpted bronze bust of a young king is a perfect example of the talented craftsmanship of the area of Ife in Nigeria. His facial expression is one of serenity and confidence. Both in himself and in his surroundings. In both hands, he holds ... moretwo objects that symbolize control and power. He also wears a crown, emphasizing his rank in society. His neck and chest are draped in traditional jewelry. The vertical carving of the face. Emulates the tribal scaring he would have received. The fact that the sculpture is made of metal rather than wood emphasizes its value and the Kings importance as well. The back of the sculpture remains simple, suggesting that the sculpture was meant to be seen frontally and not necessarily in the round. Ife bronzes are famous worldwide. Recalling Greek portrait sculpture, emphasizing muscles, power, facial character, and mystery. MEASUREMENTS: 12 inches tall and 5.5 inches wide
