Fine Benin Antique(circa mid- late 1800s) Cast Bronze Horseman Warrior. From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent ... moreAfricanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa mid- late 1800s) representing a Horseman warrior. The item is about 10" x 8 1/2 ta. In excellent antique condition. The Benin Empire dates back to prehistoric times. The political systems that were monarchial, were well established before the fourteenth century. The Rulers of Benin and Yoruba had close ties, and by the fifteenth century Benin became and important power in the region. With the backing of the monarchy selected artists of Benin developed a special style of sculpture vastly different from the rest of the region. They produced many fine bronze and or brass heads. Figurines, brass plaques, and large rectangular metal pictures, which were used to decorate the Oba's palace. The Benin Empire soon became the largest of the political systems of the Guinea Coast and toward the middle of the sixteenth century; the Oba ruled an area. Which spread from modern Lagos to the Niger Delta. Back in the late 19th century when the British forces invaded Benin City. They were overwhelmed to find artistic sculptures cast in brass/bronze. They could not believe the technological sophistication and exquisite beauty and quality of these objects. What they saw was a total contradiction to what many westerners believed or assumed about Africa. The above was too much for the British forces to bear and they swiftly concocted excuses- The sculptures must have been made by the Portuguese. The Egyptians, or the lost tribes of Israel" The so-called"Portuguese. Egyptian or Israeli" sculptures eventually found their way to Britain and later to other parts of Europe, where it was first classified Benin bronze sculpture, despite it being largely of brass. Greetings. I am pleased to be able to offer this antique African Benin Kingdom tribal bronze/ brass leopard which comes From Nigeria. Africa. This amazing ... moreBenin African leopard art piece measures 11 inches long x 3.50 inches wide x 10.50 inches high and is in great condition with a little casting flaw to the tip of the tail. The Benin Kingdom was strong throughout the 15th and 16th Centuries and was located in West Africa bordering what is now Nigeria and Togo. Benin Clans were ruled by a King which was known as the Oba and who was the divine ruler of the Benin people. The people of Benin are called Bini and are descended from the Ife peoples. The making of these Benin bronzes were strictly considered court art and were made exclusively for the palace of the Oba and were designed to venerate the achievements and memories of the Obas and their Queens also called Iyobas or Queen Mothers who ruled throughout the time of the kingdom. The metalsmiths were very talented and used complex wax casting techniques which were far ahead of their time. Their work in bronze. Copper and iron was extremely refined and their methods of metal smelting, forging and lost wax methods exceeded any seen in Europe until the 19th century. Lost-wax casting sometimes called by the French name of cire perdue(from the Latin cera perduta) is the process by which a brass or bronze sculpture is cast from an artist's carving usually made from wax. Very intricate works can be achieved with this method, depending on the carver's skills. The majority of everyday Benin objects were made for and associated with court ceremonies. Benin Royal Bronze Head of Oba Edo Nigeria Africa
Title, Benin Royal Bronze Head of Oba Edo Nigeria Africa Type of Object, Bronze Head Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Edo people at Benin, Materials, Brass/ bronze Copper Alloy, Approximate Age, 20th-21st Century. Modeled after an original dating approximately Early 1700s(After Dark& Foreman. 1960:53) but dating form the recent past. Dimensions, 11-25 inches height. 6 inches width, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, some oxidation. Rusting surface in small places, dents, Additional Information: The famous royal center of Benin in Nigeria produced a number of remarkable objects and bronze heads cast in bronze including the original of this late replica that was also cast in Nigeria. Benin City was the center of power for the Edo people and the place of residence for the Oba. The ruler. This bronze cast head is of an Oba, a ruler ... moreat Benin, who still rules today. This head is based upon an early 18th century original and shows a stylized head with magical and symbolic motifs over its surface. Serpents are shown emerging from the eyes and nostrils shown devouring frogs. Four birds stand as part of a crown like headdress most likely representing vultures that are prominent in Benin mythology and religion. The head is a mixture of magical and symbolic motifs known in other examples of Benin art. The modern caster was true to his early model inasmuch as he has set small bits of iron into the eyes representing the pupils and retaining the overall sensibility of the original. That this is a replica cannot be doubted. But what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this head continue a tradition nearly 500 years old at Benin and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. African superb large benin bronze door plaque 16" by 14"
African Benin Bronze with an oba and two warriors. The bronzes of Benin are the outcome of a long tradition. The discovery of the Benin bronzes dates from 1897. When a British punitive expedition stripped the city of Benin of many objects, which were carried to London. Soon after this expedition a newly elected oba did everything to breathe new life into the old arts and was, up to a point, successful. The“Benin style” is a court art from the palace of the divine oba. The oba possessed a monopoly of bronze. The plaques cast in high relief were used to decorate the palace. The wooden pillars of the palace were covered from head to foot with such plaques. They depicted various motifs and scenes. Figures are modeled in high relief. They appear standing in a stiffly frontal pose, as if in a kind of ceremonial posture, with all the details of their ... moreregalia or dress carefully portrayed. This plaque presents the figures of an oba King with 3 warriors.

The Edo people asked the ruler of the neighboring Yoruba Kingdom of Ife to send one of his sons to govern them. Known in history as Oranmiyan. His son Eweka became the first Oba of a dynasty that still rules today in Benin. This cast bronze head is said to represent a power figure known as Ora was a Osun specialist(Osun is a Yoruba deity) Ora accompanied Oranmiyan when he came to Benin. This tall bronze headpiece worn on top of the head was danced with six other smaller bronze cast heads without the vertical cone during a ceremony known as Ododua celebrating Ora and the advent of Osun to the Edo people. Late 19 th century photographs show the masks dancing with costumes that covered the dancer’s face with the shiny brass headpieces or head crests prominently worn with long grass stems at their tops. The mask shows symbolic imagery often found in Benin art. Serpents writhe down the tall cone crossing down to the face and neck. The tall cone represents basketry that would h

Impressive Ife Bronze Head, Benin / Nigeria
In Yoruba mythology the city of Ile-Ife situated at southwest of Nigeria is“the navel of the world. the place where creation took place and the tradition of kingship began. There it was that the gods Oduduwa and Obatala descended from the heaven to create earth and its inhabitants. Oduduwa himself became the first ruler, oni. Of Ile-Ife. To this day Yoruba kings trace ancestry to Oduduwa. Of all the centers of African art, there is none so remarkable for extraordinary accomplishments in many fields of art as the ancient town of Ife, the ritual center of the great Yoruba tribe of western Nigeria. Ife gave its name to this art. Ife art includes terra-cotta and bronze heads and busts, stone sculpture, stools and religious pieces carved in quartz, monumental granite monoliths, statues of humans and animals. Both the terra-cotta and bronze pieces ... morebelong to a series that has been interpreted by some specialists as idealized portraits, and occasionally a bust or a head has been identified as that of an oni or a dignitary. They date from 12th to the 15th. Ife style is reminiscent of that of Benin. Which flourished in the 16th century. The bronze heads were cast by the melted wax method; their dimensions are near life-size and on some the whole facial area is covered with close parallel lines which. It is thought, may represent body marks of a particular kind. Surrounding the mouth and along the lower jaw, and also on top of the head, there are irregularly placed holes. It is assumed that these were for the purpose of adorning the head with some necklace-like ornament, marking the hair, beard and moustaches. Despite the disappearance of the people responsible for the ancient Ife art, people living on its territory continued to produce artwork inspired by the original masterpieces discovered during archeological excavations. Materials: bronze Measurements: 1 8 1/2" in height by 5" width. Weight: 7 lbs 6 Ounces. Comes with wooden base. INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING PRICES HAVE INCREASED BY THE POST OFFICE. IF ACTUAL SHIP

A scholar/financial-analyst, who spent years working in Africa during the 1950s. Had an extensive collection of fine bronze items, some dating back centuries. The listed item is a 16th century Benin. Nigerian bronze head of a lyoba, which means Queen mother. Starting in the 16th century bronze busts were made to honor past lyobas and placed within their altars. Queen mother bronze heads are distinguished by a special type of coral-bead crown with a high. Forward-pointing peak, an elongated version of an elaborate hair style known as a"chicken's beak. worn by high-ranking ... morewomen. The projection on the queen mother's crown is the spiritually potent end signifying royalty. The bronze head is in very good condition. Slight abrasion scratches can be seen on the face. BENIN BRONZE FACTOIDS The art of bronze casting was introduced around the year 1280 in Nigeria. The kingdom reached its maximum size and artistic splendor in the 15th and 16th century. For a long time the Benin bronze sculptures were the only historical evidence dating back several centuries into the West African past. And both the level of technical accomplishment attained in bronze casting, as well as the monumental vigor of the figures represented, were the object of great admiration. The numerous commemorative bronze heads cast by Benin metalworkers were created for the royal palace. The heads were placed on the altars of kings. Chiefs and dignitaries. The altar functioned as a tribute to the deceased and a point of contact with his spirit. Using the bells and rattle stuffs to call the ancestor’s spir

The famous royal center of Benin in Nigeria produced a number of remarkable objects and bronze heads cast in bronze including the original of this late replica that was also cast in Nigeria. Benin City was the center of power for the Edo people and the place of residence for the Oba. The ruler. This is a head of an Oba based upon a 14th-15th century original and is a stylized portrait of a man at the Court of Benin. That this is a replica cannot be doubted. But what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this head continue a tradition nearly 500 years old at Benin and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. Benin heads were kept on altars. The hole in the head was to support an ivory tusk. Intricately carved. For exquisite examples of heds, and an article on them. Benin art is royal art, made to glorify the great king, or OBA, who is considered to have divine ancestry. The brasscasters guild historically worked primarily for the monarchy, with smaller pieces being available to chiefs. It has been in existence since the fifteenth or sixteenth century. Superb Benin Standing Leopard Bronze Nigeria African #15
Superb small Benin standing Leopard Bronze Nigeria African#15 measures approx:5"1/8 h by 5"1/4 long it shows a hole in the back leg from the casting thanks The Benin Kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king around 1300. But it was not until the 15th/16thC that the kingdom reached its zenith. Sometime in the 15thC, members of the kingdom made contact with Portuguese traders living along the coast, and it is likely that some of the skills found in their metalworks were learned from these interactions. The originals of these castings date to the 12th to 15th centuries and are worth millions of dollars. The present day inhabitants, Edo and Yoruba who live in Benin, continue to produce art today inspired by these famous early masterpieces.

Rattle Anklet Currency Yoruba Nigeria Ritual Music Lost Bronze Benin Africa
1900 to 1950 giant t i n g l y sounding Nigerian bronze antique African currency Very Good sounding musical rattle with a bright melodious snare 8.95 Flat Rate Insured U.S. Mailing Very Playable tribal instrument purchased in 2001 from excellent Santa Fe seller ethnicon with this description: A VERY OLD MEDICINE MAN'S RATTLE. CAST COPPER ALLOY, YORUBA, NIGERIA, DIAMETER 6 3/4" WEIGHT 1 3/4 POUNDS. This classic Yoruba rattle is large enough to have been worn on its owner's ankle. So that when dancing the metal pieces enclosed in each of the three hollow elements would make the desired rhythmic bell-like rattling sound. The sound is intended both to drive away the illness and attract the spirits of ancestors and the deities, whose help is necessary to complete the cure and restore the patient to physical and spiritual health and ... moreequilibrium. On other occasions, but especially when curing, the medicine man holds the rattle and shakes it rhythmically to produce the potent sound. The heavy patina shows it to have considerable age, certainly more than a hundred years and possibly much more. In any event, this is by no means just a musical instrument. Indeed, music and rhythmic sound are everywhere in the traditional world an essential part of all ritual, considered to be especially efficacious in driving out spirits of disease and witchcraft, on the one hand, and attracting the spirits of good, on the other. Here again one sees evidence of the highly developed skill of the African metalsmith in handling the different materials that went into the making of such a complex sound instrument. The first step in lost wax casting is always the sculpturing of the original on beeswax. The model is then encased in clay and when fired, the wax melts and runs out, to be replaced by the molten metal. Only one piece can be made at a time, because both the original wax sculpture and the mold are destroyed. Thus if the smith wants to produce more than a single example he has to repeat the process over and over. Hence two p
Beautiful African Elephant Head Benin Bronze Mask Sculpture
Up for sale is the first of several african bronze pieces I will be making available for sale. This is a bronze benin sculpture made in the form of an elephant. A lot of work went into this piece. With each section being cast/constructed and then attached. The trunk, tusks, ears, and decorative plates all look to have been made separately and then attached. My estimate would be that this is piece was made sometime in the 19th century, possibly the earlier part of that century. I do not believe it has the patina of an earlier piece, however I will let you be the judge of how old the piece is. This piece has a great patina and shows a lot of wear, with loss to the back edges where perforations were made(please see pictures) presumably to allow for hanging, or use as part of a larger mask? The mask itself does not look large enough for an adult ... moreto use and is quite heavy. The artisan who made this mask obviously had quite a bit of skill, and the mask displays very well. Across the back, at the widest points the mask measures approximately 5 15/16" by 9 3/4" When hung on a wall, the mask would stick out approximately 5" Please note that I am not an expert on African antiquities and would welcome additional information on this piece. This piece came from Opfer's auction in Baltimore Maryland and was part of the same collection that appeared in their March 27 sale on Liveauctioneers(this piece was not sold during that sale. It came from a subsequent sale) This was from a living estate and the gentleman whose collection this and the other pieces I will be listing came from apparently worked a second job to fund his collection. Please see pictures and ask all questions prior to buying. I will be happy to supply additional pictures/information upon request. This is being sold as is. And returns are not accepted. Exquiste Benin Bronze Warrior/Hunter Figure, Benin Kingdom / Nigeria
The powerful ancient Benin kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king in the early 14th century AD. It was situated in the forest area of southern Nigeria. 106 miles southeast of Ife. The art of bronze casting was introduced around the year 1280. The kingdom reached its maximum size and artistic splendor in the 15th and 16th century. For a long time the Benin bronze sculptures were the only historical evidence dating back several centuries into the West African past, and both the level of technical accomplishment attained in bronze casting, as well as the monumental vigor of the figures represented, were the object of great admiration. Benin bronzes are better known than the artworks from Ife or Owo due to their presence in Western museums since 1890s. In the thirteenth century, the city of Benin was an agglomeration of farms enclosed ... moreby walls and a ditch. Each clan was subject to the oba(king) The“Benin style” is a court art from the palace of the oba. And has nothing in common with tribal art. The Benin oba employed a guild of artisans who all lived in the same district of the city. Bronze figures ordered by the king were kept in the palace. The empire flourished until 1897. When the palace was sacked by the English in reprisal for an ambush that had cost the British vice-consul his life. Materials: Bronze. The final assault to this proud and powerful kingdom occurred in 1897, when the British, in an effort to seize more control over important trade routes, routed the city of Ife and seized almost all of the existing bronze and brass masterpieces. Lost wax casting is a very difficult process. The art is sculpted in Wax. Then it is cast with clay to make a mold. Inside the mold. Molten bronze is poured and hardens. I am an artist and I tried to do this kind of art. The wax was very difficult to work with and I was indoors in a modern facility. It was either too soft or too hard and I just could not get the hang of it. I am so amazed when I see Antique bronze made in Africa! They did not have electricity. Or air-conditioning or any modern convenience! These are very nice and life like. Just beautiful patina too! Perfect for any collector! Happy Bidding!

Copper and iron was extremely refined and their methods of metal smelting, forging and lost wax methods exceeded any seen in Europe until the 19th century. Large, rare early 20th century African tribal Benin bronze shield plaque,c 1920
About the item: Stunning. Rare and large vintage African Benin tribal Bronze shield plaque, Nigeria, c 1920. Cast in the traditional lost wax method, the quality of the casting is great. The plaque depicts a warrior/King on horseback and the detail and decoration is very good giving it a real presence. It has aged beautifully with good colour/patina. There is a'hole' in the warriors helmet, but this is almost certainly a feature of the original casting process rather than a defect and merely adds to the character of the piece. Antique Benin Bronze Cast Statue Bust African Africa Female Vintage Tribal Mask
Antique Statue This auction is for a very nice and very rare antique bronze statue or bust. The previous owner took a trip to Nigeria back in the 1950s and brought back many artifacts from African natives– this was one of them. The statue appears to be earlier then the 1950s but I am not an expert so please take a look at the photos. It has to be at least that old. The statue measures about 19½" tall so it’s just about life sized. It’s from the Benin tribe in Africa. Just a great piece and in great condition– the split in the bronze near the bottom was actually made during casting and is not damage. Guaranteed authentic and at least as old as the 1950s. Superb Benin Leopard Bronze Nigeria African #12
Superb small Benin Leopard Bronze Nigeria African#12 measures approx:5"1/4 h by 5" 1/4 long it shows a hole in the front leg from the casting pls check pictures thanks The Benin Kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king around 1300.

Nigeria In Yoruba mythology the city of Ile-Ife situated at southwest of Nigeria is“the navel of the world. the place where creation took place and the tradition of kingship began. There it was that the gods Oduduwa and Obatala descended from the heaven to create earth and its inhabitants. Oduduwa himself became the first ... moreruler, oni. Both the terra-cotta and bronze pieces belong to a series that has been interpreted by some specialists as idealized portraits, and occasionally a bust or a head has been identified as that of an oni or a dignitary. It is assumed that these
