Antique African (Benin) Cast Bronze Farmer, Plow and Ox Mounted Figure
On offer is an antique African primitive bronze figure of man with plow and ox. Solid and heavy weighing in at 1094 gr. Measures 7.5" x 5" 19 x 12.5 cm. When I bought this 35+ years ago in a flea market in Paris I was an anthropology student and picked this up. Seeing it as the perfect paper-weight/book end as I myself plowed through reams of paper and heavy texts. It served its purpose excellently but in the interim, I have collected far too many curiosities and really must downsize. Was sold to me as Benin(Nigeria) bronze-they're actually more likely to be brass by the way- but their sculptures(or the ones I've seen in the Victoria and Albert or the Met) Tend to a more reddish brown patina. Nevertheless. This is a very attractive piece with great lines, character, texture and fine attention to detail. Note the beautifully ... moretwisted rope halter, geometric pattern surface design on the ox, not to mention the animal's open mouth and teeth! My son who recently walked into my office and picked up this piece also commented as he held it vertically that it would make a fabulous door handle! And you know what? He's absolutely right! The base plate looks shaped to be resting against a vertical surface. It's weighted properly for such a use(hand wrapped around the ox's pulley to pull the door open and there is a hole in the base plate(where a screw now attaches it to the wood stand that could also be used to attach it to a door. Always fun to think creatively when incorporating interesting art into your home. All in all. A unique piece that deserves a closer look! Nigeria: Tribal used Statuette Fon ASEN Bronze from Benin.
Nigeria: Old Tribal used Statuette Fon ASEN Bronze from Benin. Height: 8 cm. The powerful ancient Benin kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king in the early 14th century AD. It was situated in the forest area of southern Nigeria. 106 miles southeast of Ife. The art of bronze casting was introduced around the year 1280. The kingdom reached its maximum size and artistic splendor in the 15th and 16th century. For a long time the Benin bronze sculptures were the only historical evidence dating back several centuries into the West African past, and both the level of technical accomplishment attained in bronze casting, as well as the monumental vigor of the figures represented, were the object of great admiration. Benin bronzes are better known than the artworks from Ife or Owo due to their presence in Western museums since 1890s. In the ... morethirteenth century, the city of Benin was an agglomeration of farms enclosed by walls and a ditch. Each clan was subject to the oba(king) The“Benin style” is a court art from the palace of the oba. And has nothing in common with tribal art. The Benin oba employed a guild of artisans who all lived in the same district of the city. Bronze figures ordered by the king were kept in the palace. The empire flourished until 1897. When the palace was sacked by the English in reprisal for an ambush that had cost the British vice-consul his life. The numerous commemorative brass heads. Free-standing figures and groups, plaques in relief, bells and rattle-staffs, small expressive masks and plaquettes worn on the belt as emblem of offices; chests in the shape of palaces, animals, cult stands, jewelry, etc. cast by Benin metalworkers were created for the royal palace. The heads were placed on the altars of kings, of brass caster corporation chiefs and dignitaries. Occasionally, a brass head was surmounted by a carved iv. tusk engraved with a procession of different obas. The altar functioned as a tribute to the deceased and a point of contact with his spirit. ANTIQUE African BRONZE Bells NIGERIA Likely Benin
Have been selling part of my bead collection I've accumulated over the past 45 years. Many unusual and hard to find and also newer beads I've used in designs- or thought I would, but didn't. Had two particularly practices in bead collection: one, to stay away from eroded beads because they likely were dug up from someone's grave, and two, to look for beads I'd never seen before. The longer I collected, the fewer beads I collected because I already had at least a pair(that was my"minimum" Now, I'm getting into design boxes, finding more antique beads, and pulling out other goodies. Yes, I do combine. Eight of these are quite old; one is newer brass(far left) Old bells of this particular design from Nigeria with the elongated wire-wrapped neck and the wire spiraled sides are getting harder to find. I've ... morehad these since the early Eighties; collected them from a trusted trader. They run 7/8th inches long to 1 and 1/8 inches long. The diameters vary from 12-15 mm in diameter and all. And is meant to symbolize and to extol the power, mystique, grandeur, continuity, and endurance of the ruling dynasty and its governing institutions. From the 14th century until its fall in 1897. Benin Bronze Head African Art Lost Wax Cast Sculpture Edo Oba Bust Akan Statue
Gorgeous Benin Bronze Bust made using the traditional lost wax casting technique(I highly recommend viewing this for a precursory view of the technique) Benin Bronze heads have always been prized for their fine casting technique and realistic features. The art of making these heads dates back hundreds of years to when the Edo made them to adorn the royal palace and usually represent different royalty and high ranking members of society; this one more than likely representing a queen mother. This piece is particularly stunning and shows a wonderfully mastery of the casting technique. This bust measures about 7 inches tall by about 4 in wide making it a wonderful display piece. It is in excellent shape with normal aging and would be a great addition to any collection. Please email with any questions and please take at my other sales! Thanks ... morefor Looking!

AFRICAN TRIBAL ANTIQUE BENIN CAST BRONZE COURT MESSENGER SCULPTURE
AFRICAN TRIBAL ANTIQUE BENIN CAST BRONZE MESSENGER SCULPTURE CIRCA LATE 1800s From the old private collection The figure is about 19" tall. This extraordinary. Authentic, well preserved Bronze of the Benin Kingdom in what is now Nigeria exhibits a virtuosity and sophistication of style that has astonished the Western world since they were visited in the 15th century. Their work was brought to Europe following a punitive expedition by the British in 1897, causing a great sensation. The people of Benin, called Bini, are descendant from the Ife, also known for their remarkable Bronze. Almost all Benin art was created to honor the King. or Oba. These plaque were mounted on the walls of the Oba's Palace and record the history of the Benin Kingdom. Most depict the king or warrior Chiefs. The Benin Empire dates back to prehistoric times. ... moreThe political systems that were monarchial, were well established before the fourteenth century. The Rulers of Benin and Yoruba had close ties, and by the fifteenth century Benin became and important power in the region. With the backing of the monarchy selected artists of Benin developed a special style of sculpture vastly different from the rest of the region. They produced many fine bronze and or brass heads, figurines, brass plaques, and large rectangular metal pictures, which were used to decorate the Oba's palace. The Benin Empire soon became the largest of the political systems of the Guinea Coast and toward the middle of the sixteenth century; the Oba ruled an area. Which spread from modern Lagos to the Niger Delta. Back in the late 19th century when the British forces invaded Benin City. They were overwhelmed to find artistic sculptures cast in brass/bronze. They could not believe the technological sophistication and exquisite beauty and quality of these objects. What they saw was a total contradiction to what many westerners believed or assumed about Africa. The above was too much for the British forces to bear and they swiftly concocted excuses- The sculptures mu

Exquiste Benin Bronze Warrior Figure with Wooden Base, Nigeria / Santeria
In the thirteenth century, the city of Benin was an agglomeration of farms enclosed ... moreby walls and a ditch. Each clan was subject to the oba(king) The“Benin style” is a court art from the palace of the oba, and has nothing in common with tribal art. The Benin oba employed a guild of artisans who all lived in the same district of the city. Bronze figures ordered by the king were kept in the palace. The empire flourished until 1897, when the palace was sacked by the English in reprisal for an ambush that had cost the British vice-consul his life. Measures 14 1/2" in height by 3" at width. Weighs 8 lbs. Comes with finely treated wood base.

Dimensions, 11-25 inches height. 6 inches width, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, some oxidation. Rusting surface in small places, dents, Additional Information: The famous royal center of Benin in Nigeria produced a number of remarkable objects and bronze heads cast in bronze including the original of this late replica that was also cast in Nigeria. Benin City was the center of power for the Edo people and the place of residence for the Oba. The ruler. This bronze cast head is of an Oba, a ruler ... moreat Benin, who still rules today. This head is based upon an early 18th century original and shows a stylized head with magical and symbolic motifs over its surface. Serpents are shown emerging from the eyes and nostrils shown devouring frogs. Four birds stand as part of a crown like headdress most likely representing vultures that are prominent in Benin mythology and religion. The head is a mixture of magical and symbolic motifs known in other examples of Benin art. The modern caster was true to his early model inasmuch as he has set small bits of iron into the eyes representing the pupils and retaining the overall sensibility of the original. That this is a replica cannot be doubted. But what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this head continue a tradition nearly 500 years old at Benin and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. The famous royal center of Benin in Nigeria produced a number of remarkable objects and bronze heads cast in bronze including the original of this 20th century replica that was also cast in Nigeria. Benin castings were all made by the lost wax technique, which produces one-of-a-kind pieces.A core of clay is covered with wax, which is then carved into the exact shape which the artist wants the finished piece to have. Additional wax"pipelines" are made for the wax to exit and gases to escape. The wax is then covered with a layer of fine clay. And with succeeding layers, each coarser than the previous one. The mold is then heated. Which melts the wax and fires the clay into a solid mold. The empty space is filled by pouring in molten brass. Nigeria: Tribal Used Old Animal Bronze Cock from Benin.
Nigeria: Old Tribal used Animal Bronze Cock from Benin. Height: 28 cm. In the thirteenth ... morecentury, the city of Benin was an agglomeration of farms enclosed by walls and a ditch. Using the bells and rattle stuffs
