AFRICAN TRIBAL ART OLD BEMBE MASK 11" acquired in ZAIRE - D.R.CONGO in 1986

Dimensions: 11" long. 7" wide, 3 ¼" deep(all measurements approximate) weight less then 12 oz. I have started collecting African art in early 1980's while I worked and lived in Liberia. I collected. I collected these items for their decorative value and can not vouch that they were actually used in rituals, that did not interest me. Please feel free to ask for additional information about the item or more photos. If you are interested in African art please check my other listings current and future. Traditional Afro Cuban Bembe - Bembe drum conversations
This self-study course on the very traditional form of Afro-Cuban music called Bembe is designed for students at all levels. It contains text and illustrations that will help the beginner with such fundamental skills as how to position themselves with respect to the conga drum and how to strike the conga to make different percussive sounds. However it also contains advanced rhythmic patterns for the caja(the lead drum in Bembe) and for the Bembe supporting drums. Each of which will challenge even more advanced students, and will require a great deal of practice by students at lower skill levels before they can be played well. is the first in the Ethnic Percussion Series. Originally released as a short self-study course comprised of a CD and CD insert. The second edition expands greatly on the course’s textbook. An introductory section has ... morebeen added that delves into the history of Bembe– indeed the very history of percussion itself– following its roots back well into Africa. The course has two major objectives– to teach the student about Bembe and Bembe rhythms and to make the student a more accomplished percussionist. In traditional Bembe, the supporting drums tend to remain very fixed rhythmically, not deviating from a basic pattern. Also, traditional Bembe usually incorporates only a single mid-range support drum. In this course the author, Arturo Rodriguez, has applied a certain amount of artistic license to these traditional aspects, adding a second mid-range drum to the ensemble and expanding on the basic dialogues maintained between the supporting drums. The course presents both individual rhythmic parts and, as is the hallmark of all the courses in the Ethnic Percussion Series, provides an opportunity for students to play along with an entire Bembe ensemble. As they become more proficient, this tests their ability to improvise while still maintaining the integrity of the music. Please note: The book is now in digital format. You will receive a PDF version of the book sent to you electronically. The a

MILK VESSEL BEMBE PEOPLE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, CENTRAL AFRICA 20TH C.
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a rare and stunning Milk Vessel from the Bembe People of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Central Africa. The vessel is made of wood with metal detailing and measures 5 inches in width by 14.75 inches in height(12.7 cm by 37.5 cm) It shows wear consistent with the mid-20th century, including small scrapes and cracks that are a normal part of the patina. Guaranteed authentic, it would make a fine collector’s piece for anyone involved in African art. Bembe art is profoundly religious and the‘cult of the ancestor’ is an important part of their social and spiritual life. Most of their art consists of minutely carved wooden figures- idealized images of ancestors- that can be identified by extensive scarification on the abdomen. The stylishly decorated metal detailing ... moreon these(otherwise) quite utilitarian looking wooden vessels is probably derived from these traditional scarification patterns and design s. Such vessels were used in small purpose-built shelters containing ancestral relics. Where regular libations of palm wine and food were offered to the muziri an anthropomorphic power figure. Composed of plant material covered in red fabric. The vessels can be seen as superbly abstracted representations of the human figure and demonstrate the importance of the human body in Bembe culture and the ritualistic practice of maintaining contact with the dead. The Bembe originate from the northwest forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They are representative of numerous ethnic traditions including Lega. Pre-Lega, Boyo-Kunda, and Bemba. The Bembe group of people migrated from the Congo in the 18th Century. Resettling in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, near its borders with Tanzania and Burundi. BACKGROUND The Bembe form a small group people and they live on the plateaus situated ... moreto the north of the Zaire River. As well as on the shores of Stanley Pool and in the cities of Brazzaville, Dolisie, and Pointe-Noire. The Bembe had close contacts with their neighbors the Teke, but Kongo contributions were essential to their culture and traditions. Their social organization was based on the matrimonial clan, whose members could live in several villages. The family unit generally included three generations. The chief in charge of the village, the Nga-bula, mediated with the ancestors. Hunting was the main activity; before leaving on a hunt, the leader would invoke the ancestral spirits, using as intermediaries statuettes kneeling in the position of a hunter waiting for his prey. The Bembe believed in a creator god, Nzambi, whom they did not depict figuratively. He was the master of the life and death– unless the latter was due to the act of a sorcerer, Ndoki, who could magically“eat” the life force of clan members. The ancestors had close ties with the living and received offerings through the“priest, who made appeals to statuettes, the kitebi or bimbi, consecrated by the sorcerer. These figurines were the idealized images of the ancestors and would ofte

Carved figures known as “Mizi” are kept on family shrines by the Basikassingo to depict ancestors who are venerated, and are petitioned for good fortune or to prevent or cure illnesses or bring luck to hunters. This large figure demonstrates African carving at its best with great sculptural views from all sides and especially striking when viewed from the side. The elongated and triangular face is defined by the refined facial features, a carved beard in zigzag, and a long nose along and prominent eyes and mouth characteristic of the Pre-Bembe style. Congo: Extremly Rare Tribal used African Bembe Helm Mask. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. Height: 38 cm. The Bembe form a small group of 60 to 80.000 people; they live on the plateaus situated to the north of the Zaire River, as well as on the shores of Stanley Pool and in the cities of Brazzaville, Dolisie, and Pointe-Noire.
