Classically carved figures such as this mother and child among the Baule are known generally as waka sran. Meaning a'person of wood' Some maternity sculptures were owned by diviners known as Komien, who could tell the future, cure illnesses as well as solving local community problems. The figure embodies a number of symbolic elements as shrine figure; she is a ’mother’ and for the diviner she is a place of residence for the spirit of the bush to reside ready to be called upon by the diviner. Advised by the bush spirit(asye usu) the diviner will determine the reason that a woman is barren and direct her as to what she must do bear children. Very Old Baule Original Tribal Drum #Alobalo African art Ivory Coast
Item Specifications Type of Object Drum Materials Wood. Pigment Ethnic Group Baule Country of Origin Ivory Coast Approximate Age + 100 years Dimensions 23.6/15.3 inches(60/39 cm) Additional information Embellished drum from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast. Has 2 high reliefs depicting figures and abstract patterns with precision and balanced asymmetry. Characteristic of the Baule drums are these traditional decorative motifs to be admired by the audience. The drummer would use his hands as the beater, creating varied tones by shaping or cupping his hands, rubbing, slapping or thumping the drum head with his fingers and/or palms. Figures represent ancestors. The Baule are one of the Akan peoples. They moved west to the Ivory Coast more than 200 years ago and adopted sculptural and masking traditions from their neighbors. The Guro, Senufo ... moreand Yaure peoples. Although Baule figures had a wide range of use. The actual function of the figures is not easy for outsiders to determine. All were thought to be inhabited by spirits and did not represent ancestors. Small figures include the roughly carved bo usu that helped with hunting and the more refined blolo bla(spirit wife) and blolo bian(spirit husband) that, if well taken care of, helped their human partners in all areas of life. Asye usu figures were the abode of spirits associated with diviners. In ritual performances the spirit would come out to possess the diviner, causing a trance. The display of the figures would enhance and support the ensuing dance. Figures carved by the Attie(southern neighbors of the Baule and like them, members of the Akan people) share the careful detailing and virtuosity typical of Baule carving but have more muscular limbs and small pegs imitating scarification patterns. Pigment Dimensions cm: 109 tall x 64 wide This Stunning large mask was field collected from a village near Bwaki. Cote D'ivoire. These were found in the village just proped up against the huts whilst the Goli festival is on going! Goli is the day-long spectacle that normally involves the whole village and includes the appearance of four pairs of masks. Music played on special instruments, and, ideally, the jojoyous consumption of a great deal of palm wine. Goli can be performed both as an entertainment and for the funeral of important men. The very characteristic, round-shaped“lunar” goli is surmounted by two horns. It was borrowed from the Wan for a celebration ... moreadopted by the Baule after 1900. Celebrating peace and joy, they would sing, dance, and drink palm wine. In the procession, the goli preceded the four groups of dancers, representing young adolescents. The goli would be used on the occasion of the new harvest, the visit of dignitaries, or at the funerals of notables. Boxes for the mouse oracle(in which sticks are disturbed by a live mouse, to give the augury) are unique to the Baule, whose carvers also produce heddle pulleys, combs, hairpins, and gong mallets. The Baule are members of the Akan peoples. Who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. During the 18th century, the Baule people migrated westward from Ghana when the Asante rose to power. The story of how they managed to break away from them has been preserved in their oral traditions. BROKEN PICE IN ARM AND BEARD REPAIRED WITH GLUE, FINGER CHIPED AND MISSING, ... moreAdditional Information: A well used standing female ancestor figure from the Baule. The finely balanced carving of the figure and the well-finished surface all reflect Baule sensibilities of representation and aesthetics. Baule carved figures are known generally as waka sran. Meaning a"person of wood”. Such sculptures had multiple purposes and used. They fall into two categories, the first represents spirits of the wild(Asie Usu) that live in the bush beyond village boundaries. Figures of this category are owned by diviners known as Komien, who can read the future, heal as well as solve his client problems. The priest communicates with these spirits through such figures also considered as receptacles of spirits. Our piece may belong to this category because of the importance of encrusted sacrificial material on its surface. The second category of statues is composed of male and female figures that represent ‘spirit world’ spouses for their owners. ‘Other world spouses’, are kept in personal shrines where offerings are made to them and where they are close by their real world spouse. These figures reflect Baule ideals of beauty and ae
Baule Anyi or Attye Male Figure Lagoon Region Africa
Title, Male Figure Baule Anyi or Attye Lagoon Region Africa, Type of Object, Standing male figure, Country of Origin, Cote D'Ivoire. Ghana People, Baule. Anyi, Attye, Materials, Wood. Pigment, beads, cotton cloth, Approximate Age, second half 20th Century, Dimensions, 22 inches H. x 4.5 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, chips in the back, Additional Information: This beautifully carved standing male figure. Graceful, with exceptional haistyle, comes from one of a number of small, segmented groups living along the Atlantic coast called the ‘Lagoon Peoples’ who share a common artistic legacy heavily influenced by Akan traditions. In fact she shares much of the Baule and Anyi canon or proportion and details of the figure. Living in the border area between Ghana and the Ivory Coast Akan, Lagoon traditions ... moreof art and culture are shared but also reflect influences from other coastal peoples the Baule in Ivory Coast and especially the Fante living close by the Lagoon area. This apparently old and well-used figure has stylistic elements of the Anyi or one of the Lagoon people who live to the north-east of the coastal area of the Ivory Coast. He has a naturalistic face with muscular body. Details such as the the hairstyle and the caved beard recall some Baule figures and portray him as a mature man of some social status with great aesthetics sensibilities. Its surface tells of extended use serving ritual traditions of the region in which sculptures were used by diviners or ‘healers’ who made offerings to the figure to carry messages to the spirit world. This is a particularly good example of a localized tradition of carving from the among one of the Akan peoples of the Ivory Coast or Ghana and would serve as a centerpiece of a collection. The figure embodies a number of symbolic elements found in shrine figures; she is a mother and for the diviner she is a place of residence for the spirit of the bush to reside. Ready to be called upon by the diviner. Advised by the bush spirit(asye usu) the diviner will determine the reason that a woman is barren and direct her as to what she must do to bear children. It is the energy and power of the bush spirits that are contacted by the diviner and directed to help the woman. This offered figure exhibits typical Baule concern with the aesthetics of motherhood. She is standing on a stool. To be expected of a person of importance. Its surface shows traces of much handling that indicates long use. Classically-carved figures such as this mother and child among the Baule were very often owned by diviners known as Komien, who could tell the future, cure illnesses as well as solving local community problems. A great Baule figure to add to any collection! Recommended Reading: P.L. Ravenhill: Baule Statuary Art: Meaning and Modernization. Institute for the Study of Human Issues, Working Paper 5(

With whom they share a very similar culture, history, and language. Lulua masks, artifacts and figures are hard to get nowadays as their people's art vanishes with time. From my collection here is a rare, used in the village and striking old mask from the Lulua. The raffia and wicker hood from the headdress still intact. In my educated guess I estimate this mask to be 40 to 50 years old. An unrestrained and overwhelming looking mask! It measures 17 inches from north to south, not including the headdress. Stand not included. Thanks for looking!

Baule Colonial Figure: Film Maker
When there is a visual artistic expression that reflects a specific historical psycho-socio time period of a people that object is considered to be important. This figure is reminiscent of the time when Africa was dominated by European invaders or colonists. A sad time when most native tribal African art was considered to be absolute taboo. Uncivilized, the work of the devil and banned from further production by the invaders. Precious African articles were destroyed and stolen due to this ignorance. Despite this assault, the heart of the African artist survived. In West Africa, Baule artisans in Ghana after a while began to produce small painted wooden figurines of colonialists as they were viewed through African eyes. Today these figures are very popular and extremely undervalued in our opinion. On display is an older example of this craft. ... moreOur figure is a portrayal of a film maker complete with camera! The gentleman has a well detailed olive green suit, yellow decorated tie and sturdy black heeled shoes all topped off by the popular pith helmet. Perhaps he is filming animal activity or maybe taking note of a tribal celebration! More photos are available! Just ask! Dimensions: 10 inches tall x 4 inches deep x 3 inches across.

Item: Baule Mblo Costume Mask Specifications: 36 x 24 x 12 cm Origin: Ivory Coast(see ethnographical notes below) Context: Used in skits and solo dances. Medium: Timber Carving BAULE(BAOULE. BAWULE) Côte d'Ivoire The Baule people is one of the largest ethnic group in the Côte d'Ivoire. They have played a central role in twentieth-century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people. And maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. According to a legend. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the ... moreland of Senufo. In order to cross the river, she sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. Now about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern Côte d'Ivoire between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. Each village was independent from the others and made its own decisions under the presiding presence of a council of elders. Everyone participated in discussions, including slaves. It was an egalitarian society. The Baule compact villages are divided into wards. Or quarters, and subdivided into family compounds of rectangular dwellings arranged around a courtyard; the compounds are usually aligned on either side of the main village street. The Baule are agriculturists; yams and maize are the staples, supplemented by fish and game; coffee, cocoa and kola nuts are major cash crops. The importance of the yam is demonstrated

They are said to portray an honored person of the village who is celebrated during a ceremonial dance known as â?Mbloâ?. It is an aesthetic performance in which this beautifully carved mask would be worn with a multicolored costume and danced in the most graceful manner by either the person it represents or a relative. The costume would have been attached to the mask by cords that was threaded through the holes at the back of the mask. This classic mask recalls the artistry of the Baule artists of the past. The refined and finally carved face may be similar to the person for whom the mask was originally carved to represent. Baule art is sophisticated and stylistically diverse. Non-inherited. The sculptor’s profession is the result of a personal choice. The Baule have types of sculpture that none of the other Akan peoples possess. Wooden sculptures and masks allow a closer contact with the supernatural world. Baule statues are usually standing on a base with legs slightly bent, with their hands resting on their abdomen in a gesture of peace, and their elongated necks supporting a face with typically raised scarification and bulging eyes. Antelopes within the Baule people are honored as they represnt strength, stability whose spirit brings good fortune. Unbelievably time intensive, and makes one-of-a-kind pieces. A casting mask in the form of a crocodile head with an open mouth showing pointed teeth, and open eyes. There are fine motifs around the eyes and the top. This lost wax cast of a copper alloy mask(bronze or brass) comes from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast in west Africa. Though masks are not normally used by the greater number of Akan peoples including the Asante or Fante, they are often found attached to various chiefly regalia prominent on sword sheaths or chiefly stools. They represent human and animal heads and are sometimes used as trophies. It is difficult to determine the age of this fine mask however the delicacy of the treatment of the facial details show that this was the product of a skilled craftsman and a long tradition of casting in West Africa. Additional information: Africa has been home to an active metalworking industry for 6.000 years, reaching back to the ancient Nubians and Egyptians who crafted artifacts in gold and copper. Ironworking ... morewas introduced by the Phoenicians around 800 BCE, and spread gradually across the continent: south into the Sudan and the Kingdom of Axum, then west to the Nok civilization and along the Atlantic coast. The metal was used to produce weapons, tools, amulets and other magical objects, and blacksmiths came to occupy a special position in society: respected and feared for their powers of metamorphosis. To this day, many West Africans will not look a blacksmith directly in the eye. Iron was not the only metal manipulated and shaped by the skilled hands of African metalworkers. The Ashanti kingdom in present-day Ghana was famous for its abundant gold reserves. And the Ashanti people crowned their king on a sacred golden stool said to have floated down from the heavens. The nomadic Tuareg traversing the Sahara region specialized in silver jewelry like the Agadez cross pendants which were passed down from father to son with the words, “I give you the four corners of the world, because one cannot know where one will die.” In Ethiopia, triangular or crescent-shaped telsum amulets, mergaf pendants with their dangling conical bells, Coptic crosses, and strands of hollow p
