I got this at an auction and I don't have any information about the background or where it came from. It is hand-hewn and all of the details identify this mask with the Baule Goli masks. However-the back of the mask does not have a place for the face or any breathing holes. I think it must have been created for decoration or sale instead of for use in ceremonies. This mask is 45" tall from the top of the horns to the bottom. It is 26.25" wide. It would stick out about 3" from the wall. The back of the mask has the word"Bass" in chalk. There are two screws at the base of the horns presumably for mounting on the wall. There are also two screws around the middle sides of the mask with a ... morewire for hanging on the wall. Good Condition-There are some minor dings and scratches to the wood. There is one place on the horn that looks like a crack-but when you look at it closely it is where the wood was joined. This early 20th century Ivory Coast Gbekre Standing Monkey is a trance divining object used by Mbra Cult males. This one has a museum aesthetic having some rare features; however. It has some condition issues. It is 24" tall and is masterfully carved in hardwood. With attention to traditional form, but with some profound detail. The tongue is actually submerged and licking the inside of the sacrificial or potion bowel. The spine is carved as if it is filled with these"eggs" of life found in the potions. I love the front facial qualities-the nose is pushed back and the eyes are squinted in what seems like ecstasy. The mouth is open wide; and the teeth are many and sharp. The hands and feet even have nails. The penis is highly defined. It was carved from the center of the log which is obviously from the bottom. Great carving. ... moreYes! but, there is a crack that is stable and runs across the head, jaw to jaw under the eyes. There is on large chip next to it on the right side of the head. There is also a small chip on the front left lip and on three teeth. That's all I see that distresses it. It is such a bold and strong form- a very powerful object and if you are looking for that quality, small damage is inconsequential. I have enjoyed this for many years.

This is a well-used example of Baule masks and is in good condition with particularly interesting and uncommon symbolism. Its very uniqueness combined with its quality of carving argues for a place in a major collection for it is a rare and unique example of its kind! It is difficult to place this offered mask into a set category of well known Baule masks. In general Baule masks dance to honor visiting dignitaries and serve during funerals honoring senior men and former notable dancers of masks. The figure embodies a number of symbolic elements as shrine figure; she is a âmotherâ and for the diviner she is a place of residence for the spirit of the bush to reside ready to be called upon by the diviner. Advised by the bush spirit(asye usu) the diviner will determine the reason that a woman is barren and direct her as to what she must do bear children. It is the energy and power of the bush spirits that create and give life that are contacted by the diviner and directed to the woman. Dents in places, Additional Information: A small double Faces mask placed among the Baule people of the Ivory Coast who are close neighbors ... moreof the Yaure and Guro. The mask is elegant and shows finial details. The Baule. Yaure and Guro share similar social practices and some stylistic elements in their masks and carvings. In fact the mask could come from the better-known Baule where double(large or small) masks were also found or it could be simply an amalgamation of style elements from Baule, Guro, and Yaure. It is interesting to notice that surface on this mask shows traces of white pigment, and dark material encrusted on indicating its age and long use and by doing so further blurs traditional stylistic identifiers associated with the entioned peoples of Cote dâivoire. Among the Baule mask with a pair of carved faces probably represent a male-female couple. But its precise use is unknown. The pair could be a couple more than likely connected to Baule mythology. But the Yaure masks are used primarily for the Lo ceremony and at times may dance in the Je ritual celebration that cleanses the village after the death of an individual. They can also represent âYuâ a spiritual power. Though the mask has two faces carved on it the wearer would look out of the hole located between the two faces.

This mask from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast belongs to a special grouping known as âportrait masksâ. Called ândomaâ by the Baule. They are said to portray an honored person of the village who is celebrated during a ceremonial dance known as âMbloâ. It is an aesthetic performance in which this beautifully carved mask would be worn with a multicolored costume and danced in the most graceful manner by either the person it represents or a relative. The âMbolaâ dance reflects feminine virtues including graceful movements and elegant dancing steps and celebrates her beauty. It was a traditional instrument among the Akan peoples of Ghana and the Ivory Coast but sad to say has been replaced in the main by the western style guitar. This finely carved example has a kneeling male figure with a long carved beard in a feature appropriate to an elder or an elite. The harp would in fact be held upright on the lap with the strings facing the player with the carved figure on the sound box figuratively and metaphorically facing the player. The sound box is in the form of a human body with legs s base or support. The long neck of the Harp is decorated with rings ad surmounted by the kneeling figure.
