Damage/Repair, A wonderful male ancestor figure holding his beard as an indicator of high rank and status in this world and in the spirit world! Baule Male Standing Figure Cote d'Ivoire African Art. The elaborate markings on their bodies front and back and their faces allied to the complexity and detail of the hair enhances their presentation as personages of high rank and social status. Facial features and hair are especially detailed. The figure finely balanced and the well-finished surface reflect Baule sensibilities of representation and aesthetics. This figure was used as an ancestor figure or a spirit of other world. In fact. Baule carved figures are known generally as waka sran, meaning a"person of wood”. Such sculptures have multiple purposes and uses. They fall into two categories, the first represents the spirits of the wild(Asie Usu) that live in the bush beyond village boundaries. Figures of this category are owned by diviners known as Komien, who can read the future, heal as well as solve his client problems. The priest communicates with these spirits through such figures also considered as receptacles of spirits. Our piece may belong to this category because of the importance of encrusted sacrificial material on its surface. The second category of statues is composed of male and female figures that represent ‘spirit world’ spouses for their owners.

A rather small ethnic group located in Cote d'Ivoire(Ivory Coast) Between the Baule and Guro people, the Yohure are heavily influenced religously, culturally, and artistically by their much larger neighbors. Despite these influences, however, the Yohure have a strong sense of cultural identity, and have developed an exquisite artistic style that is most prominently featured in their breathtaking masks. Generally human in appearance, often with elements of animals incorporated, the masks are generally associated with their use in funerary ceremonies, and are intended both to guide the spirits of the deceased into the afterlife, as well as to help restore social order in the event that a death greatly upsets the community. Considered spiritual emblems, the masks are said to be quite dangerous, as the yu spirits they represent are known to be capable of harming humans. As such. They must be handled with the utmost care. Because of this association with death, women are not only not allowed to participate in dances with these masks, but are not generally allowed to view them at all. The Yohure believe that this proximity to death can cause a woman to lose her fertility, an unthinkable prospect in many African cultures. This gorgeous Yohure mask displays many of the common traits that make them so lauded and desirable. The coiffure is elegantly rendered. Featuring an animal motif, in this case a crocodile(some would say lizard) The Baule influences can easily be seen in the facial details, and like many masks of West Africa, identifying scarification marks are represented on the piece. The eyelids are pigmented as well, and the mask be

Kplekple are regarded as playful masks. In some villages they are seen as the children. Red ones represent females and black males. They chase young women through the village. Teasing them. This particular mask has unusually shaped horns- bent pack. As well as the round mouth- usually it is triangular. Both of these represent artistic expression of the local carver. The mask is a primary art form in the Ivory Coast, and the masks of the Baule are greatly influenced by their neighboring peoples, the Senufo and Guro. Iv. Coast: Rare Tribal used African Baule colonization figure. Height: 48 cm. The Baule people is one of the largest ethnic group in the Côte Iv. ... moreThey have played a central role in twentieth-century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people. And maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Iv. According to a legend. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river. She sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. Now about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern Côte d'Iv. between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism. Great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. Each village was independent from the others and made its own decisions under the presiding presence of a council of elders. Everyone participated in discussions, including slaves. It was an egalitarian society. The Baule compact villages are divided into wards, or quarters, and subdivided into family compounds of rectangular dwellings arranged around a courtyard; the compounds are usually aligned on either side of the main village street. ed African mask from Igbo. In body, and in base, Additional Information: A standing female figure in the finest Baule style. The beautiful striated hairstyle and scrarification patterns in body are impressive. The face is so sublime and sensitively-rendered that there is a possibility that this piece represents a specific person. Though most likely it represents an idealized female ancestor. Baule figures might represent the wild spirits(asie usu) that live in the bush beyond village boundaries and or the ‘spirit world’ spouses. The spirit lover figures are known as ‘Blolo Bla’. Though representing bush spirits the asie usu are shown as wild spirits in beautiful bodies. These figures were used by trance diviners known as komien and were kept in a shrine in the diviner’s house where the spirit of the bush could inhabit or ‘sit’ on the figure. Other figures in shrines served specific local ritual purposes. The obvious wear and differences of the color of the surface indicates some age for the figure and the remains of offering on the face reinforce the thought that the figure was once in a shrine where she would receive offerings. And are kept hidden in the bush where they are fed with sacrificial offerings. The encrusted patina on this figure is from sacrificial offerings and ritual libations poured over the figure. The large necklace with cowrie shells the figure is wearing, contains magical elements. Baule Brass CROCODILE Mask-Superb Africa

Damage/Repair, Some oxidation. Damage to the head, holes, cast flaws, casting imperfect by one eye and on the very top. Additional Information: Beautifully cast. This piece ... morewas cast using the lost wax process. Unbelievably time intensive, and makes one-of-a-kind pieces. A casting mask in the form of a crocodile head with an open mouth showing pointed teeth, and open eyes. There are fine motifs around the eyes and the top. This lost wax cast of a copper alloy mask(bronze or brass) comes from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast in west Africa. Though masks are not normally used by the greater number of Akan peoples including the Asante or Fante, they are often found attached to various chiefly regalia prominent on sword sheaths or chiefly stools. They represent human and animal heads and are sometimes used as trophies. It is difficult to determine the age of this fine mask however the delicacy of the treatment of the facial details show that this was the product of a skilled craftsman and a long tradition of casting in West Africa. Baule Mask Miniature Cote d'Ivoire African
Title, Baule Mask Miniature Cote d'Ivoire African, Type of Object, Mask. Miniature Mask, Country of Origin, Cote d'Ivoire, People, Baule, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, 20th Century, Dimensions, 7.75 inches, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, General wear. Chips, Additional Information: Miniature masks often called"passport" masks are found among the various peoples of Liberia and Ivory Coast. Including the Dan, Yacouba, Gio, Wenion(We, Guere) Geh, Loma, Konor, and Bete. They are rarely seen among the Baule people. This miniature is exceptionally well-carved and big in size compare to many passport masks. Small masks like this are use as personal mask of initiated adult men and would be carried everywhere When traveling, initiates would take passport masks with them in leather pouches. The masks would serve ... moreas protective spirits. Passport masks serve also to mark the passage of an initiate into the men's secret society and his elevation into the higher ranks. They may be presented at meetings of senior members of the men's society to indicate their right to be present and participate in the deliberations. Diviner would recommend that small masks be given to children to wear to ward off evil witches or cure illnesses. Passport masks were kept on personal shrines when not in use. On shrines they would receive the offerings and prayers of their owners and in time would accumulate a rich patina of different substances that could obscure their features. Most of these miniature masks mirror the shape and features of the larger masks that they were modeled after. Like the full-sized dance masks the smaller masks reflect the great diversity of styles and forms of the larger masks. This one is in the shape of an anthropomorphic portrait mask with high elaborate coiffure that indicates the mask represents a female character. See picture with penny for size comparison. Strand Length, 30 inches, Globe Beads Graduated Gigantic Ghana Additional information: Africa has been home to an active metalworking industry for 6.000 years, reaching back to the ancient Nubians and Egyptians who crafted artifacts in gold and copper. Ironworking was introduced by the Phoenicians around 800 BCE, and spread gradually ... moreacross the continent: south into the Sudan and the Kingdom of Axum, then west to the Nok civilization and along the Atlantic coast. The metal was used to produce weapons, tools, amulets and other magical objects, and blacksmiths came to occupy a special position in society: respected and feared for their powers of metamorphosis. To this day, many West Africans will not look a blacksmith directly in the eye. Iron was not the only metal manipulated and shaped by the skilled hands of African metalworkers. The Ashanti kingdom in present-day Ghana was famous for its abundant gold reserves. And the Ashanti people crowned their king on a sacred golden stool said to have floated down from the heavens. The nomadic Tuareg traversing the Sahara region specialized in silver jewelry like the Agadez cross pendants which were passed down from father to son with the words, “I give you the four corners of the world, because one cannot know where one will die.” In Ethiopia, triangular or crescent-shaped telsum amulets, mergaf pendants with their dangling conical bells, Coptic crosses, and strands of hollow prayer beads were all crafted in silver. This mask was carved by the Baule tribe from the Ivory Coast
Lot 82, Outstanding Baule Harvest Mask with Three Birds, Ivory Coast
Baule art is sophisticated and stylistically diverse. Non-inherited. The sculptor’s profession is the result of a personal choice. The Baule have types of sculpture that none of the other Akan peoples possess. Wooden sculptures and masks allow a closer contact with the supernatural world. Baule statues are usually standing on a base with legs slightly bent, with their hands resting on their abdomen in a gesture of peace, and their elongated necks supporting a face with typically raised scarification and bulging eyes. The coiffure is always very detailed and is usually divided into plaits. This Baule mask nice an incredible patina. Measures- 16" X 7 1/2" HAEVY SOLID WOOD.

And four strings. This harp-lute would have four to six strings and produced a light melodious sound when strummed. It was a traditional instrument among the Akan peoples of Ghana and the Ivory Coast but sad to say has been replaced in the main by the western style guitar. This finely carved example has a kneeling male figure with a long carved beard in a feature appropriate to an elder or an elite. The harp would in fact be held upright on the lap with the strings facing the player with the carved figure on the sound box figuratively and metaphorically facing the player. The sound box is in the form of a human body with legs s base or support. The long neck of the Harp is decorated with rings ad surmounted by the kneeling figure. The back of the sound box is decorated with a standing figure in relief. This is a large harp-lute that would hold a prominent place in a collection. 63481* All content. This slit drum comes from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast. Slit drums found throughout Africa are carved form a solid piece of wood and then laboriously hollowed out. This drum has a central slit with a narrower slit along each side parallel to the center rectachular opening. The drum would be beaten on the edges of the slits to obtain different tones that will resonate with depth or to produce sharp high notes. This Slit gong was probably used by the diviner. Slit drums play the same role as figures present during the divination process. The diviner uses wooden beater to produce sounds that accompany his trance or oracle. Fine Baule Antique(circa mid- late 1800s) Cast Bronze Artifact. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa mid- late 1800s) in a shape of a King and Queen sitting on the chairs. The figures are about 18" and 16 1/2" high in excellent antique condition. The figures separate from their respective chairs. WEIGHT OVER 20 POUNDS African Bronze: The word Yoruba describes both a language and a group of people spread across Nigeria and Benin. Yoruba origins can be traced back to the holy city of Ife at the end of the first millennium. According to the Yoruba peoples’ myth of the origin. Of Ife, it was the place where the gods descended from the skies to populate the world. According to tradition, when the first Oba(Benin king) died his head was sent to Ife for burial, with Ife sending back a bronze head for the ancestors’ altar. ... moreFascinated by this creation Benin royalty beseeched the Ife king to send an artist who could teach the art of bronze work to Benin craftsmen. The Benin were already skilled working with this extremely rare metal called bronze but had trouble with the technique of casting. The Ife artist Ighea was sent and passed on the now legendary“lost wax” casting technique which enabled the Benin to create items using less bronze metal. Froo www.froo.com | Froo Cross Sell. Outstanding Baule Feast Ladel, Ivory Coast
In their traditional context. Spoons like this are carried by a woman who has been given the honor of the most generous and hospitable woman of the village. She would parade through the village with the spoon, showing her status. With her, she would carry a wunkirmian and displays a bowl with small coins or rice. Which she distributes to the children of the community while dancing and singing. The deep belly of the spoon from which this bounty is dispersed, becomes the symbolic body or womb of the female figure. The event creates a profound visual analogy that honors the hostess and women in general as a source of food and life. Measures 19" by 4"

Masks like this are use as personal mask of initiated adult men and would be carried everywhere When traveling, initiates would take passport masks with them in leather pouches. The masks would serve as protective spirits. Passport ... moremasks serve also to mark the passage of an initiate into the men's secret society and his elevation into the higher ranks. For more information see Bacquart's"TRIBAL ARTS OF AFRICA. 72419* All content. With the wrought iron blade protruding from a man's mouth. Three-dimensional lizard crawls along the handle. The Baoulé(or Baule) are an Akan people and one of the largest groups in the Ivory Coast. The Baoulé are farmers who live in the eastern side of Côte dIvoire. The Baoule people are represented by religion. Art, festivals, and equal society. There are more than sixty-five different Akan-speaking ethnic groups living in Cote d'Ivoire. They live essentially in the middle of the Cote d'Ivoire between the Comoé ... moreRiver and the Bandama River. They played a role during 20th century history. Legend goes that in the 17th century the Baoulé left present day Ghana and traveled west into present day Côte dIvoire under the lead of the Queen Pokou. According to oral tradition, the Baoulé were forced to leave Ghana when the Ashanti rose to power. While they were fleeing for their lives they came to a large river that they were unable to cross. With their enemies chasing them they began to throw their most prized possessions into the river. It came to the Queen's attention that their most valuable possession was her son. The Queen realized that she had to sacrifice her son to the river and threw him in. Upon doing so hippopotamuses rose from the river and allowed them to cross, saving their lives. After crossing, the Queen was so upset about losing her son that all she could say was"baouli, meaning: the child is dead. From that point on they were known as the Baoulé.
