The artistry of the Baule carvers is evident in the detail of the carving, and the passion that went into decorating everyday items. The Baule name comes from their myth of origin. In the seventeenth century. In what is today known as Ghana, the Denkyera kingdom rose to prominence, but a dispute led to a dynasty leaving the country. Abla Poku, the queen, had to flee far from Kumasi with her people, the Asabu, whom she led through the forests, but their trip was brought up short by the Comoe river. she consulted her diviner, who told her that to ensure safe passage across the river, she would have to sacrifice her only child. So, eager to escort her people to the promised land, she decided the she herself would throw the child into the waters as an offering to the river gods, crying out"Baouli" My child is dead! and the followers are said to have adopted this word as the name for their people in honor of the queen's sacrifice. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! Title, Baule Maternity Figure Mother with Child on the Back Cote d'Ivoire African, Type of Object, Carving. Statue, Country of Origin, Cote d'Ivoire, ... morePeople, Baule, Materials, Wood. Paint, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 19 inches H. x 4.25 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, crack in head. Chips in places, Additional Information:  A great carving from the Baule people depicting  standing woman with child on her back  The surface indicates the figure has red paint  and it's possible that the figure has been painted several times. Indeed a beautiful sculpture to have in any collection. Classically carved figures such as this mother with child among the Baule are known generally as waka sran. Meaning a'person of wood' Some maternity sculptures were owned by diviners known as Komien, who could tell the future, cure illnesses as well as solving local community problems. The figure embodies a number of symbolic elements as shrine figure; she is a ’mother’ and for the diviner she is a place of residence for the spirit of the bush to reside ready to be called upon by the diviner. Advised by the bush spirit(asye usu) the diviner will determine the reason that a woman is barren and direct her as to what she must do bear children. It is the energy and power of the bush spirits that create and give life that are contacted by the diviner and directed to the woman. This well carved figure exhibits typical Baule concern with the aesthetics of the presentation of the beauty of the women and child. Her hair is carefully combed and modeled and scarification throughout show her as a mature and prominent woman of her community.  Recommended Reading: P. L. Baule Seated Maternity Figure African Art
Type of Object, Statue. Carving, Country of Origin, Cote d'Ivoire, People, Baule, Materials, Wood. Beads, pigment, Approximate Age, Mid 20 th century, Dimensions, 26.5 inches, Overall Condition, Fair, Damage/Repair, Age cracks to the head. Face, torso, legs, and base; broken baby's foot, Additional Information: This seated figure of a woman breast-feeding the child she olds on her knees comes from a shrine some where among the Baule of Ivory Coast. The figure seats on an elaborate carved stool decorated with two animal masks and two bent legs.Remains of dust and obvious wear indicates long use and substantial age for this wooden figure. Classically carved figures such as this mother and child among the Baule are known generally as waka sran. Meaning a'person of wood' Some maternity sculptures were owned by diviners known as ... moreKomien, who could tell the future, cure illnesses as well as solving local community problems. Her hair is carefully combed and modeled and scarification on her chest, abdomen, neck and face show her as a mature and prominent woman of her village. Despite crack damages. This is still a superb sculpture and will stand out in a collection. Recommended Reading: P. L. Ravenhill: Baule Statuary Art: Meaning and Modernization. Old Unique Tribal Monkey Figure Statue Maybe Baule Anatomically Correct Antique
Up for bid is this very interesting old monkey statue with a nice patina. I purchased it at an antique flea market many years ago and am cleaning out some of my collection of vintage and antiques. I do not know anything about it other than what I am making guesses about after doing some research online. Please view all of the photos and make your own determination about where it is from and how old it is. I really just don't know. I just bought it because I liked it. All that being said after looking around online it seems to resemble the Baule Mbra statues from the Ivory Coast of Africa. Tribal art or something Pre Columbian although I'm not sure if they used metal such as this in their work. The examples of these I found were similar with the protruding teeth and wild looking eyes. He is seated with his paws on his knees, he appears ... moreto be anatomically correct. He has stylized circular eyes and a tail winding up his back. He is very unique and appears to be quite old although I am unsure of his age. It is made from a metal but I am not sure what type. It seems to be hollow inside so I'm not sure if it was cast or formed some other way. I suspect it's iron but it could easily be some other type of metal; it weighs close to 4 ounces. He measures approximately 3" tall x 2" long from tail to toe and about 2" wide. He does have some corrosion going on and has small holes that have formed here and there. I took pictures of them. Please view these as they offer the best description of his condition. As I mentioned he is hollow and there is a small hole on the bottom. When you shake him sand and dirt falls out. When I purchased him I didn't clean him I just put him on my shelf he is as found. Please view all the photos before bidding. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have. A neat piece for your collection for sure. Shipping is to the U.S. only. 1.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp73%28b0g%60%60%3E1-13e0b608909-0xf4-

Lot 75, Old / Collectable Baule Male Kplekple Goli Mask w/Horns / Ivory Coast
Common features of the Kplekple disc shaped facemasks include antelope shaped horns. Round eyes, rectangular shaped mouth and the geometric designs. The red face is considered female and the dark/ black face is considered male. The Goli masquerading tradition is performed during funerals and or during times of danger. The mask wearer mediates with supernatural forces during the ritual. Which have a positive influence on the village people. The Kplekple is considered the lowest of Goli masquerades and these rituals appears 3 times during the day. Dawn. Afternoon and after sunset. The dance announcers the arrival of Goli Glin a zoomorphic figure or of kpwan, an anthropomorphic one. The Baule tribe adopted this ritual from the neighboring Wan tribe. Even the language of the Wan is still use during the ritual. The young mask wearers are often ... moredraped in goatskin that covers their back along with a raffia skirt. Baule Brass Crocodile Mask-Superb Ivory Coast African
Title, Baule Brass Crocodile Mask-Superb Ivory Coast African, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Ivory Coast, People, Baule, Materials, Brass/Copper alloy, Approximate Age, Unknown, Dimensions, Height is 10.5 inches, Overall Condition, Good:   Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners. Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Some oxidation. Holes head, chips in eyes and in the back, hole in lower jaw Additional Information: A beautifully cast! This piece was cast using the ... morelost wax process. Unbelievably time intensive, and makes one-of-a-kind pieces. A casting mask in the form of a crocodile head with an open mouth showing pointed teeth, and open eyes. There are fine motifs around the eyes and the top. This lost wax cast of a copper alloy mask(bronze or brass) comes from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast in west Africa. Though masks are not normally used by the greater number of Akan peoples including the Asante or Fante, they are often found attached to various chiefly regalia prominent on sword sheaths or chiefly stools. They represent human and animal heads and are sometimes used as trophies. It is difficult to determine the age of this fine mask however the delicacy of the treatment of the facial details show that this was the product of a skilled craftsman and a long tradition of casting in West Africa. Damage/Repair, A wonderful male ancestor figure holding his beard as an indicator of high rank and status in this world and in the spirit world! Baule Male Standing Figure Cote d'Ivoire African Art. The elaborate markings ... moreon their bodies front and back and their faces allied to the complexity and detail of the hair enhances their presentation as personages of high rank and social status. Facial features and hair are especially detailed. The figure finely balanced and the well-finished surface reflect Baule sensibilities of representation and aesthetics. This figure was used as an ancestor figure or a spirit of other world. In fact. Baule carved figures are known generally as waka sran, meaning a"person of wood”. Such sculptures have multiple purposes and uses. They fall into two categories, the first represents the spirits of the wild(Asie Usu) that live in the bush beyond village boundaries. Figures of this category are owned by diviners known as Komien, who can read the future, heal as well as solve his client problems. The priest communicates with these spirits through such figures also considered as receptacles of spirits. Our piece may belong to this category because of the importance of encrusted sacrificial material on its surface. The second category of statues is composed of male and female figures that represent ‘spirit world’ spouses for their owners.

BAULE MATERNITY FIGURE - WAKA SRAN
This seated figure of a woman with two children on her knee comes from a shrine somewhere among the Baule of Ivory Coast. The figure seats on an simply carved stool. There are remains of dust and obvious wear indicates long use and substantial age for this wooden figure. Classically carved figures such as this mother and child among the Baule are known generally as waka sran. Meaning a'person of wood' Some maternity sculptures were owned by diviners known as Komien, who could tell the future; cure illnesses as well as solving local community problems. The figure embodies a number of symbolic elements as shrine figure; she is a’mother’ and for the diviner she is a place of residence for the spirit of the bush to reside ready to be called upon by the diviner. Advised by the bush spirit(asye usu) the diviner will determine the reason ... morethat a woman is barren and direct her as to what she must do bear children. It is the energy and power of the bush spirits that create and give life that are contacted by the diviner and directed to the woman. This well carved figure exhibits typical Baule concern with the aesthetics of the presentation of the beauty of the women and child. Her hair is carefully combed and modeled and scarification on her chest, abdomen, neck and face show her as a mature and prominent woman of her village. This fine example measures 16“ tall and 7“ wide and will be shipped on this custom wooden stand.

The faces are idealized. Ornaments above the face have no iconographic significance. These masks denote personal beauty. WEIGHT OVER 20 POUNDS African Bronze: The word Yoruba describes both a language and a group of people spread across Nigeria and Benin. Yoruba origins can be traced back to the holy city of Ife at the end of the first millennium. According to the Yoruba peoples’ myth of the origin. Of Ife, it was the place where the gods descended from the skies to populate the world. According to tradition, when the first Oba(Benin king) died his head was sent to Ife for burial, with Ife sending back a bronze head for the ancestors’ altar. ... moreFascinated by this creation Benin royalty beseeched the Ife king to send an artist who could teach the art of bronze work to Benin craftsmen. The Benin were already skilled working with this extremely rare metal called bronze but had trouble with the technique of casting. The Ife artist Ighea was sent and passed on the now legendary“lost wax” casting technique which enabled the Benin to create items using less bronze metal. Froo www.froo.com | Froo Cross Sell.
