African Baule Female Fetish Figure ('Blolo Bian')-Antique
I have owned this wonderful female figure from the Baule tribe for over 40 years. It was bought on impulse from an antique dealer in the Marche aux Puces in Paris in 1972. I was an anthropology student and she'hooked' me. From first gaze. Unlike the'spirit spouse' she was originally carved to represent, she became my companion. Needless to say, the money spent on this purchase and shipping her home to North America, shortened my trip by several weeks. Sculptures such as these are front and centre in important auctions of African ethnographic art. In fact. Ever since the publication of Carl Epstein's important book'Negerplastik' in 1915, Baule art has been central to Western appreciation of African art. It is, for obvious reasons, one of the canonic African art traditions with rarely rivalled art historical significance. ... moreSusan Vogel. Wrote a book titled'Baule: African Art, Western Eyes' 1997) and in it she states that"while the relative naturalism and consummate workmanship of Baule objects were praised at the outset, today these objects are priased for their subtle rhythms and a beauty that stops short of sweetness. To the western eye, an essence of Baule style is a balanced asymmetry that enlivens while also suggesting stability and calm. Baule art is sophisticated and stylistically diverse. Baule statues are usually standing on a base with legs slightly bent. Their hands resting on their distended abdomen in a gesture of peace, and their elongated necks supporting a face with typically raised scarification and bulging eyes. The coiffure is always very detailed and is usually divided into plaits. Baule figures answer to two types of devotion: one depicts the“spiritual” spouse who, in order to be appeased, requires the creation of a shrine in the personal hut of the individual. A man will own his spouse, the blolo bian. And a woman her spouse, the blolo bla. The Baule believe that before they were born into the world they existed in a spirit world. Where each one had a mat

Iv. Coast: Rare Tribal used African Baule colonization figure. Height: 48 cm. The Baule people is one of the largest ethnic group in the Côte Iv. They have played a central role in twentieth-century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people. And maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Iv. According to a legend. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river. She sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. ... moreNow about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern Côte d'Iv. between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism. Great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. Each village was independent from the others and made its own decisions under the presiding presence of a council of elders. Everyone participated in discussions, including slaves. It was an egalitarian society. The Baule compact villages are divided into wards, or quarters, and subdivided into family compounds of rectangular dwellings arranged around a courtyard; the compounds are usually aligned on either side of the main village street. ed African mask from Igbo. They cannot possibly represent spirit-spouses(which are always single pieces) they are inevitably spirits of nature. There are undoubted similarities in appearance, as in this case, and even the hands are held in the same position. However, in this context they convey a different meaning for the Baule, who say this is the typical gesture of deference used by spirits when they meet a diviner, and this is how the spirits appear to the sculptors themselves in their dreams. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! This lost wax cast of a copper alloy mask(bronze or brass) comes from the Guro or Baule people of the Ivory Coast in west Africa. Though brass masks are not normally used by the greater number of Akan peoples including the Asante or Fante. They are often found attached to various chiefly regalia prominent on sword sheaths or chiefly stools. They are said to represent the heads of defeated enemies and are shown with some evidence of ... morelocal scarification which is rare among the Akan but often shown on terracotta sculptures. The face shows a beard around the lower section of the mask. It is difficult to determine the age of this small mask however the attention to detail and the abstraction of the features show that this was the product of a skilled craftsman. The figures reflect Baule ideals of beauty and aesthetics as the female(blolo bla) and male(blolo bian) figures exhibit youthful, well formed bodies and with much attention to details of hair and scarification as well as being dressed in what is considered fashionable and in recent times in European style clothing. The present figure was used in the divination process. Diviners among the Baule. African tribal Baule mancala owari game board, female figure, ethnographic art
Mankala is one of the many names given to any of a vast variety of basically similar games played in many widely spread parts of the world. The common feature of all these games is that they are played with pebbles. Beads or large seeds on regularly patterned playing areas or boards consisting of a number of pits arranged in two or four rows. These playing areas may be actual wooden boards or they may be holes scooped in the sand or even carved into a solid rock. The generalized game is played from West Indies to Hawaii and from Turkey to South Africa. This broad belt includes all of Africa, the Middle Ease, India, South East Asia, Indonesia, East Indies and the Philippines. The similarities between all the varieties of mancala leads to the inescapable conclusion that at sometime in the distant past they all originated in one place. This ... morepiece is from Burkina Faso and is also referred to as owari or mancala owari. It measures 25.5" in length, 12" wide and 9" tall with 12 pits which is most common in Africa. The special seeds used for this particular game board are included. A very interesting piece, more than just a game board this piece is art and extremely unique and a real find for the collector!
