Called “ndoma” by the Baule. Portrait masks are said to portray an honored person of the village who is celebrated during a ceremonial dance known as “Mblo”. And maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and West Coast. According to a legend, during the 18th century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land of Senufo. This extraordinary sculpture is carved and painted wood. It measures 3 inches in width by 2.5 inches in depth by 13.25 inches in height(7.62 cm by 6.35 cm by 33.6 cm) It is in very good condition, showing wear commensurate with use and dates to the late 20th century. The Baule(Akan people) of the Ivory Coast in West Africa believe each person has a mate in the spirit world- a place where all spirits originate and return. The existence of the otherworld mate is typically encountered by young adults who face a specific problem such as infertility or the failure to find a mate. A diviner may determine that the problem can be solved by marriage to a spirit spouse- in which case a representation of the spouse is carved. Each sculpted spirit spouse has a distinctive personality and exerts a powerful influence on the daily life of its physical mate. A man will own his spouse. The blolo bian. And a woman her spouse, the blolo bla. Once the marriage between the physical mate and the spirit spouse takes place it becomes the physical mate’s obligation to give offerings to the spirit spouse. In turn. It becomes the obligation of the spirit spouse to cure whatever problem caused the creation of the marriage in the first place. When the figures are used. They are private objects. Normally stored in a private room of the house, spirit spouse statues are rarely shown to anyone. Artists often chose to not dress figures in clothing so as not to hide natural beauty. Once the problem which caused the marriage is resolved the sculpture of the spirit spouse may be released into the marketplace. These statues serve as potent reminders that aided by

A rather small ethnic group located in Cote d'Ivoire(Ivory Coast) Between the Baule and Guro people, the Yohure are heavily influenced religously, culturally, and artistically by their much larger neighbors. Despite these influences, however, the Yohure have a strong sense of cultural identity, and have developed an exquisite artistic style that is most prominently featured in their breathtaking masks. Baule Mbra Carved Wood Monkey African Tribal Art Figure Mature
The monkey spirits of the Baule. Known as Mbra or Gbekre by the tribe, are considered figures of power and are used in many rituals. In one such ritual, a trance divination, the spirit of the Mbra assists the diviner in his efforts to convey messages from the spirits in the other world and solve problems during consultations. Normally invisible, this was one rare occasion where an Mbra spirit could be seen by ordinary people. When not in use, the Mbra would be displayed on a shrine. Considered too powerful for women to see, the monkey figures were kept hidden in the bush and fed with sacrificial offerings. It was these offerings, sacrifices, and ritual libations which were poured over the figure that created the encrusted patina. This figure was crafted in the early to mid 20th century, and is holding a bowl in its hands which was used as ... morea container for magical elements. The face features an opened squared mouth with large canines at the corners. The tale of how they broke away from the Asante has been preserved in their oral traditions. During the Asante rise to power the Baule queen. The neck is elegant and the facial features are what the Baule would call desirable and the face has been carved in a heart shape. Exquisite African Art - Baule Goli Kple Kple Mask
Exquisite African Art- Baule Goli Kple Kple Mask African Baule Goli Kple Kple Mask Tribe: Baule Origin: Cote D'ivoire Approx Age: Late 20C Materials: Wood. Cloth, pigment Dimensions cm: 52 tall x 32 wide This was field collected by us from a village near Bouake Cote D'ivoire. Baule Goli kplekple mask Masks correspond to several types of dances: the gba gba. The bonu amuen, the mblo and the goli. They never represent the ancestors and are always worn by men. The gba gba is used at the funerals of women during the harvest season. It celebrates beauty and age. Hence its refined features. The double mask represents the marriage of the sun and the moon or twins. Whose birth is always a good sign. The bonu amuen protects the village from external threats; it obliges the woman to a certain discipline; and it appears at the commemorations ... moreof death of notables. When they intervene in the life of the community. They take the shape of a wooden helmet that represents a buffalo or antelope and which is worn with a raffia costume and metal ankle bracelets; the muzzle has teeth. Which incarnate the fierce animal that is to defend the group. Goli is the day-long spectacle that normally involves the whole village and includes the appearance of four pairs of masks. Music played on special instruments. And, ideally, the jojoyous consumption of a great deal of palm wine. Goli can be performed both as an entertainment and for the funeral of important men. The very characteristic. Round-shaped“lunar” goli is surmounted by two horns. It was borrowed from the Wan for a celebration adopted by the Baule after 1900. Celebrating peace and joy. They would sing, dance, and drink palm wine. In the procession, the goli preceded the four groups of dancers. Representing young adolescents. The goli would be used on the occasion of the new harvest, the visit of dignitaries, or at the funerals of notables. The goli kplekple mask is one of several that appear in the Goli spirit dance. It represents a minor spirIt associated with the junior ra
