Title, Baule Female Figure Standing on Stool Cote d'Ivoire Africa, Type of Object, Carving. Statue, Country of Origin, Cote d'Ivoire, People, ... moreBaule, Materials, Wood. Pigment, beads, cotton cloth Approximate Age, Second half of the 20th century, Dimensions, 20 inches H. x 3.25 inches W. Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, large cracks in head. In body, and in base, Additional Information: A standing female figure in the finest Baule style. The beautiful striated hairstyle and scrarification patterns in body are impressive. The face is so sublime and sensitively-rendered that there is a possibility that this piece represents a specific person. Though most likely it represents an idealized female ancestor. Baule figures might represent the wild spirits(asie usu) that live in the bush beyond village boundaries and or the ‘spirit world’ spouses. The spirit lover figures are known as ‘Blolo Bla’. Though representing bush spirits the asie usu are shown as wild spirits in beautiful bodies. These figures were used by trance diviners known as komien and were kept in a shrine in the diviner’s house where the spirit of the bush could inhabit or ‘sit’ on the figure. Other figures in shrines served specific local ritual purposes. The obvious wear and differences of the color of the surface indicates some age for the figure and the remains of offering on the face reinforce the thought that the figure was once in a shrine where she would receive offerings. Her seated position with one hand resting on her thigh and the other offering her breas

Additional Information: A passport mask in the form of a small carved t mask with animal features attributed to the Baule. This passport mask has a onsistent used patina! Miniature masks often called"passport" masks are found among the various peoples of Liberia and Ivory Coast. Including the Dan, Yacouba, Gio, Wenion(We, Guere) Geh, Loma, Konor, and Bete. They are rarely seen among the Baule people. Masks like this are use as personal mask of initiated adult men and would be carried everywhere When traveling. Initiates would take passport masks with them in leather pouches. The masks would serve as protective spirits. Passport masks serve also to mark the passage of an initiate into the men's secret society and his elevation into the higher ranks. They may be presented at meetings of senior members of the men's society to indicate their right to be present and participate in the deliberations. Diviner would recommend that small masks be given to children to wear to ward off evil witches or cure illnesses. Passport masks were kept on personal shrines when not in use. On shrines they would receive the offerings and prayers of their owners and in time would accumulate a rich patina of different substances that could obscure their features. Their masks, like the one offered here, are similar in style to those of both groups, but usually have a few defining elements to aid in their identification. The most common are the serrated edges surrounding the lower border of the face. The Yaure used two types of masks, those that were black and those that were brightly painted. The darker ones were used in funeral processions, and are highly-prized by collectors for their stark beauty. Known as"lo" masks, their purpose was to appease supernatural powers known as"yu. The"yu, though vital for life, could also destroy, so veneration was important to ease the understandable social and spiritual tension present after the death of an elder. If truly a Baule mask. This example would fall into a special grouping known as men and women ‘portrait masks’, Kpan Pre, Kpan Kp

African tribal passport mask Cote d'Ivorie, Baule, collectible art home decor 21
The Dan tribe of Ivory Coast called the miniature masks passport masks because of their size and variety of uses. They are masks of initiated adult men that would be carried with them or kept on personal shrines in their home. They mark the passage as an initiate into the man's secret society and his attaining a higher rank. At the suggestion of diviners small masks would be given to children to wear to ward off evil or cure illness. Men carried small“passport” masks in leather pouches when they traveled as a form of identification. This mask is thought to be around 5 years old and measures 4.5" X 2.5"

The holes on the sides of the mask help attach the mask to the face of the wearer. Baule masks are all unique, however all have similar qualities. The primary important qualities of the Baule masks are smoothed patina, balanced proportions, clear lines and well rounded and slightly asymmetrical in form. This mask measures 6" in height and 3" in width with a thickness of 2.5" It is thought to be around 40-50 years in age. A fine piece with a beautiful patina. carved slate ? DAN BAULE MASK Portrait Ivory Coast Africa Beeswax? clay? on back
I recognized this as a Baule face but never saw one in slate- I think it's slate. The stone is in layers. It might also be some kind of very hard dark gray clay( see close- ups of back) or else has clay added to the slate on the back? It has what looks like a think application of beeswax or( opaque dark golden wax) affixed to the back which is holding a hanging device made of thick aluminum? or some other metal. It's the color of aluminum. Some pieces on the side have broken off- please see photos. It's a very nicely done face. Almost delicate. It measures approx 3 7/8" wide x 6 1/4" long. BACKGROUND The Baule represent one of the most important tribes of the West Coast. Their name is testimony to their birth– according to legend. Queen Aba Pokou led her people on an exodus towards the gold mining areas during the 18th Century and had to cross a river where she was obliged to sacrifice her son to the river god, thus giving her people the name Bauli, the son is dead” During the 19th Century, the queendom disintegrated due to internal conflicts and by the beginning of the 20th century, when the French colonials arrived, they found only a network of villages, headed by councils of venerated men. The Baule people use three types of masks: The first is a helmet mask in the shape of a buffalo head, Bonu Amwin; the second represents a human face with rounded, fairly realistic features; and the third type includes masks related to the Goli festival. Three type of masks are used during these festivals: the first is of discoid shape and represents a highly stylized face beneath a pair of horns; the second is a helmet mask representing a buffalo head beneath antelope horns; and the third is used for closing the festivities, and has an elongate

FINE OLD BAULE MALE FIGURE 1950’s WEATHERED PATINA OLD BEAD NECKLACE
0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Description: This finely carved male Baule figure from the Ivory Coast dates to about the 1950’s or a bit earlier. The carving has a sensitively carved face. Well-articulated fingers and toes as well as an exceptionally detailed hair style. The figure's male genitals are partially covered by a loin cloth. An old beaded necklace with a gold-like nugget hangs around its neck. As with many tribal pieces from European collections of this era(2 nd quarter to mid-20 th century) this statue has been covered with varnish– a now almost outdated practice which was probably originally instituted for wood preservation purposes. I believe this piece was originally from an old English collection– which would explain the varnish. If anything. This overall covering has worked to effectively showcase the piece’s ... moreweathered surface by outlining its worn-down wood grain. Please note that this statue is mounted on a substantial block of beautifully-grained burled wood which is included in the auction. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. Three hundred years ago the Baule people migrated westward from Ghana when the Asante rose to power. The tale of how they broke away from the Asante has been preserved in their oral traditions. During the Asante rise to power the Baule queen. Aura Poku, was in direct competition with the current Asante king. When the Asante prevailed, the ... morequeen led her people away to the land they now occupy. The male descendant of Aura Poku still lives in the palace she established and is honored by the Baule as their nominal king. The Baule create art in several media. Including wooden sculpture, gold and brass casting similar to their Asante ancestors, and mask and figure carving, which have been greatly influenced by their Senufo and Guro neighbors. Superb Large Baule Monkey from the Mbra Cult Anthromorphic Sculpture Africa
This is a superb Baule Mbra monkey. It has a cup in its hand. So it is called Gbekra and drinks potions that stimulate its divinity nature. This one is actually putting it its tongue into the cup. Pre-cup days, the monkey held an egg-this one reflects that history in that its internal organs are carved as if it is full of eggs. Highly unusual. Mbra monkey sculptures being used are forbidden to be seen and are never publicly displayed due to their divining power. The detail on the carving is highly articulated as the teeth are very sharp; has defined finger and toenails; the nostrils are open and flaring; the spine is highly detailed; the penis is very defined. In general. This is one of the most interesting and one of the largest pieces I have have seen. The work of a master carver-beautiful and haunting design bring this to life as a magic ... moresculpture. It does have some damage, so I have taken that into consideration on pricing. I purchased it a number of years ago with the same damage for considerably more than I am asking. I have been collecting for 65 years, so some of the things I acquired are now very old, esp. if they were old when I got them. If you have questions or need more photos please email me.

Antique African SlingShot Artifact – Carved to Resemble a Person - Baule Tribe
This sling shot is from Africa. From Western Africa. Possibly the Baule Tribe. Just imagine, some nomad used this slingshot to hunt their meal possibly several generations ago. This is crudely carved to look like a person or possibly a phallus(from the rear) A traditional boy's toy, the slingshot is used to keep animals out of the crops and for hunting birds and lizards. The figures reflect the skill and whimsy of each individual carver. This slingshot has a lovely patina that speaks of much use and handling. This are very old, and the elderly lady who had these in her collection had these for 50 years or more. This would make a fantastic display piece for the serious African Artifact Collector. Title, Guro Baule Brass Mask Bird on Top SUPERB CASTING African, Type of Object, Mask. Metalwork, Country of Origin, Cote d'Ivoire, People, Guro or Baule, Materials, Brass, Approximate Age, 20th century, Dimensions, Height: 9.5 inches, Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, holes in forehead and cheeks. Some oxidation on the surface, a few scratches Additional Information: Small casting mask. This lost wax cast of a copper alloy mask(bronze or brass) comes from the Guro or Baule people of the Ivory Coast in west Africa. Though brass masks are not normally used by the greater number of Akan peoples including the Asante or Fante. They are often found attached to various chiefly regalia prominent on sword sheaths or chiefly stools. They are said to represent the heads of defeated enemies and are shown with some evidence of ... morelocal scarification which is rare among the Akan but often shown on terracotta sculptures. The face shows a beard around the lower section of the mask. It is difficult to determine the age of this small mask however the attention to detail and the abstraction of the features show that this was the product of a skilled craftsman. This is probably an example from the 20th century. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi. PhD. 41666* All content. Baule art is sophisticated and stylistically diverse. Non-inherited. The sculptor’s profession is the result of a personal choice. The Baule have types of sculpture that none of the other Akan peoples possess. Wooden sculptures and masks allow a closer contact with the supernatural world.
