The Baule use three major types of masks: masks related only to the Goli festival and the masks representing a human face with fairly realistic features. The masks of the last group are used in mblo entertainment dances and are one of the oldest of Baule art forms. Such a mask is usually a portrait of a particular known individual. The faces are idealized. Ornaments above the face have no iconographic significance. These masks denote personal beauty. Refinement, The greater importance of the portrait masks, the need for the best dancers to wear them, and the requirement that the portrait’s subject also be available and willing to dance made them more rarely performed than animal masks, which could be worn by young, relatively ... moreinexperienced dancers. African tribal passport mask Cote d'Ivorie, Baule, collectible art home decor 21
The Dan tribe of Ivory Coast called the miniature masks passport masks because of their size and variety of uses. They are masks of initiated adult men that would be carried with them or kept on personal shrines in their home. They mark the passage as an initiate into the man's secret society and his attaining a higher rank. At the suggestion of diviners small masks would be given to children to wear to ward off evil or cure illness. Men carried small“passport” masks in leather pouches when they traveled as a form of identification. This mask is thought to be around 5 years old and measures 4.5" X 2.5"

I recognized this as a Baule face but never saw one in slate- I think it's slate. The stone is in layers. It might also be some kind of very hard dark gray clay( see close- ups of back) or else has clay added to the slate on the back? It has what looks like a think application of beeswax or( opaque dark golden wax) affixed to the back which is holding a hanging device made of thick aluminum? or some other metal. It's the color of aluminum. Some pieces on the side have broken off- please see photos. It's a very nicely done face. Almost delicate. It measures approx 3 7/8" wide x 6 1/4" long. Some oxidation on the surface, a few scratches Additional Information: Small casting mask. This lost wax cast of a copper alloy mask(bronze or brass) comes from the Guro or Baule people of the Ivory Coast in west Africa. Though brass masks are not normally used by the greater number of Akan peoples including the Asante or Fante. They are often found attached to various chiefly regalia prominent on sword sheaths or chiefly stools. They are said to represent the heads of defeated enemies and are shown with some evidence of ... morelocal scarification which is rare among the Akan but often shown on terracotta sculptures. The face shows a beard around the lower section of the mask. It is difficult to determine the age of this small mask however the attention to detail and the abstraction of the features show that this was the product of a skilled craftsman. This is probably an example from the 20th century. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi. PhD. 41666* All content.
