Red Carved Wood West African Mask w/ Bird Tribal Art Guro Yaure Baule
Wonderful west African carved wooden mask with a red painted face. The mask has an elaborate high coiffure with a bird- probably a hornbill. Which plays a large part in many mythologies of the area- perched on top. Based on its characteristics, I believe that this mask originates with the Guro people, however it could also come from the related Yaure or Baule tribes. The mask has some wear. But is overall in good condition with no significant breaks or visible repairs aside from a crack along the back of the hair. Please examine the pictures provided. African tribal art is notoriously difficult to date, but this piece most likely dates from the 19th or 20th century. The mask measures approximately 16 1/2" tall and 6 1/4" wide. This piece is part of a larger collection of African Tribal Art assembled over a period of decades and ... morecomprising hundreds of items that we have received on consignment and will be listing over the coming weeks. Traditional animal masks(bonu amuin) are composed of poly-zoomorphic elements taken from animals prominent in everyday life or Baule myth. Most generally seen as a horizontal buffalo mask. Bonu amuin dance to honor visiting dignitaries and during funerals honoring senior men and former dancers of masks. Though identified with the sacred forest and the men’s society they do not appear to have a well defined religious or ritual function. However they serve to protect the village from external danger or war. In any case, they are not to be seen by women during their appearance. African Mask Authentic Tribe Made African Masks Set Of 2 Guro Mask Baule Mask
AUTHENTIC 1950's era African masks set of two. These were brought home after the war in 1950's by a gentlemen from upstate NY who was in the Army international affairs and assisted in the surveying of damage done to multiple countries. And bodies of people. He spent a great deal of time in Africa, Europe and Middle East. He was noted to have spent time with both guro and baule tribesmen in the Côte d'Ivoire region So I am very unsure as to which style these are or if it's one of each? But it's one or the other or both by my research. Gifts tended to be a tad less intricate than those used repeatedly in ceremonial dances and almost always included a side gift of good spirit attached. http:www.zyama.com/guro/ http:www.zyama.com/baule/ These masks were created by tribesman and used in ceremonies. So authentic you can still smell the fire smell inside used to burn away the wood for easier carving by the tribesmen.Paint is bubbled and dirty due to the use of vegetable and earth pigments. They are super cool and a great collectors item. They were boxed most of their shelf life inside an army issue backpack when found. Due to the great authenticity and craftsmanship of these beauties there is a reserve. Serious buyers only! Both masks are 14 inches tall and approx 7 inches wide"Masks are the works of skilled craftsmen. Created according to the requirements of tribal rules and customs, usually in the primitive conditions of a remote village. They have been used in actual ceremonies, tribal initiations and rituals, always accompanied by dance and very often with music played on traditional instruments. Zyama.com The Baule represent one ... moreof the most important tribes of the West Coast. Their name is testimony to their birth– according to legend. Arts of Africa - Baule Mask - Ram With Horn - 15" Height x 5" Wide - (Collector)
Côte d'Ivoire The Baule people is one of the largest ethnic group in the Côte d'Ivoire. They have played a central role in twentieth-century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people. And maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. According to a legend. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river, she sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. Now about one million Baule occupy a part ... moreof the eastern Côte d'Ivoire between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism. Great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. Each village was independent from the others and made its own decisions under the presiding presence of a council of elders. Everyone participated in discussions, including slaves. It was an egalitarian society. The Baule compact villages are divided into wards, or quarters, and subdivided into family compounds of rectangular dwellings arranged around a courtyard; the compounds are usually aligned on either side of the main village street. The Baule are agriculturists; yams and maize are the staples. Supplemented by fish and game; coffee, cocoa and kola nuts are major cash crops. The importance of the yam is demonstrated in an annual harvest festival in which the first yam is symbolically offered to the ancestors. Whose worship is a prominent aspect of Baule religion. Ancestors are the object of worship but are not d

And in specific the ram’s horns, have been a potent symbol in world mythology ... morethroughout the ages. Throughout time, spanning across divergent cultures and civilizations, the ram has been a traditional symbol of male fertility. The power and majesty of this beast has been long revered by mankind, and this was especially true of the Baule tribe who identified the ram and their tribal symbol. Masks are commonly used among many African cultures to facilitate the bond between the people and their ancestors and divinities. Masks instill social order. And can bring forth prosperity as well as misfortune. They are used in ceremonies of rites of passage and are usually accompanied by elaborate music and choreography. Among the Baule, who are believed to over a million people, there are two general forms of masks: animal and human. This mask is of a type that would have been worn and danced with during the Goli festival related to the harvest and to funerals of important tribal leaders. The wearer would have been covered in an elaborate costume hiding his body beneath. Thus the illusion proffered by the mask would be completed. The mask seeks not to disguise the wearer but to transform him into a medium through which the spirit world could communicate with the v

A note to silver scrappers: There are those on Ebay who will claim that the weight of an object is less than advertised and demand a rebate after the auction has ended. This is an ongoing trend and these individuals seem to complain if silver prices go down between the day they buy and the day they receive. When one melts silver one can lose as much as 5% of the weight in the smelting process and I can not be held responsible for weight lost after melting. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and West Coast. According to a legend, during the 18th century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river, she sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. Now about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern coast between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. FINE ANCESTRAL BAULE TRIBAL MASK, HAND-CARVED IN WOOD, IVORY COAST, WEST AFRICA
FINE ANCESTRAL BAULE TRIBAL MASK. HAND-CARVED IN WOOD, IVORY COAST, WEST AFRICA The Baule tribe live in Ivory Coast and Ghana. West Africa. They worship their ancestors and several nature gods, which they reshape in wooden sculptures. The mask in this auction is a fine example of a decorative ancestral mask that may have been used in rituals associated with the rebirth of life. It is hand-carved out of one single piece of dense wood. And has a lustrous finish. It represents a woman who may have died when young, with several marks of beauty: oval face with high forehead, well-proportioned straight nose and chin, sensual mouth, sleek hair. Yet it highlights elements of death as well, like the sunken eye sockets, the parted lips, and the three links of the wooden chain connecting life with the hereafter. Typical for Baule art are large structures ... moresuch as horns. Birds, or complicated coiffures on top of the head. In this case the ancestor must have been a person of power and wisdom, possibly a queen or princess, as is symbolized by the African elephant above her head. The mask measures 17 inches tall by 6 inches wide. Your questions are welcome and thank you for giving this auction your attention.

Exquisite African Art - Very Rare Baule Mask With Twin Tribal Figures
Exquisite African Art- Very Rare Baule Mask With Twin Tribal Figures African Baule Mask Tribe: Baule Origin: Cote D'ivoire Approx Age: Mid 20C Materials: Wood. Pigment Dimensions cm: 84 tall x 20 wide 17 Depth This Stunning and rare mask was field collected from a village near Bongouanou. Cote D'ivoire We do not have any notes on this beautiful piece so we can't say why it was carved or for what purpose it would be used. All we do know is that there are no more of these masks in this village and we have not seen anything similar in other neighbouring villages that we have visited. The Baule are members of the Akan peoples. Who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. During the 18th century, the Baule people migrated westward from Ghana when the Asante rose to power. The story of how they managed to break away from them ... morehas been preserved in their oral traditions. During the emergence of the Asante the Baule queen, Aura Poku, was in direct conflict with the Asante king, and when the Asante prevailed, the queen led her people away to the land they now occupy. Baule mythology holds that she had to sacrifice her son to the river god in order to complete the exodus safely. The male descendant of Aura Poku still lives in the original palace she established, and is honored by the Baule as their symbolic king. The Baule today are the most powerful group in Cote d'Ivoire, admired as highly skilled politicians, as well as talented artists, who have produced some of the most elegant objects known in West Africa.
