This is an absolutely amazing piece. The head is carved from a solid piece of incredibly heavy dense wood. The cracks you are seeing are from age. This piece is incredibly solid and dense. It's designed much like a bust sitting on top of an old wicker basket it's attached by old canvas or burlap. It's decorated with shells and old bells. The pony tail is very interesting. At the end of the wooden head there is a piece if black fabric hanging and inside is hair. Not sure if it's animal hair or human hair but there are black and gray strands coming out of the end. This auction features an old. Interesting, large, hand-carved wooden mask with horns, probably African- Baule Goli in origin. This mask has been painted red and black, but most of the paint has worn or weathered off on the front(see photos) Some gray paint remains on the back(see photos) The front of the mask has interesting geometric and circular carvings, and a nicely carved mouth with teeth, all intact. There is some apparent damage and/or wear to this mask: one eye socket has some wood loss. The wooden horns appear to have been damaged, and the wood has some checking that is evident on both the front and back. The back of the mask has four holes for tying the mask to the wearer's head. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. According to a legend. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. This a portrait mask known as Kpan or Mblo Portrait mask coming from the Baule Ivory Coast(Cote dâIvoire) This mask probably falls into a special grouping known as âportrait masksâ. Kpan or Mblo. They are said to portray an honored person of the village who is celebrated during a ceremonial dance known as âMbloâ. It is an aesthetic performance in which this beautifully carved mask would be worn with a multicolored costume and danced in the most graceful manner by either the person it represents or a relative. The costume would have been attached to the mask by cords that was threaded through the holes at the back of the mask. They are also exporters of cocoa and kola nuts. Which are grown on local plantations using large numbers of exploited migrant laborers, most from Burkina Faso. Many locally grown crops were introduced from the Americas during the Atlantic slave trade. These include maize, manioc, peppers, peanuts, tomatoes, squash, and sweet potatoes. They also raise farm animals including sheep, goats, chickens, and dogs. Markets which are primarily run by women take place every four days and are the center of the local economy. Local produce and craft items are sold alongside imported goods from all over the world. Political Systems: The Baule have a highly centralized government with a king or chief at the top who inherits his position along matrilineal lines. The beard as well as the superstructure edges are embellished with geometric motifs. The beauty of this well-carved face equals that of the person for whom the mask is dedicated. The mask represents a healthy and beautiful person it is said to portray. The closed eyes and pursed mouth indicate propriety and respect in keeping the eyes downcast and a sense of reserve that a mature person will cultivate. Such masks are said to portray an honored person of the village who is celebrated during a ceremonial dance known as âMbloâ. It is an aesthetic performance in which this beautifully carved mask would be worn with a multicolored costume and danced in the most graceful manner by either the person it represents or a relative. The costume would have been attached to the broad collar of the mask by cords that were threaded through the holes at the back of the mask. Kplekple are regarded as playful masks. In some villages they are seen as the children. Red ones represent females and black males. They chase young women through the village. Teasing them. This particular mask has unusually shaped horns- bent pack. As well as the round mouth- usually it is triangular. Both of these represent artistic expression of the local carver. The Baule people inhabit the Central Ivory Coast. Their population is approximately 400.000 and the language is Baule(Akan cluster of Twi) The Baule create art in several different media. Including gold and brass casting(similar to their Asante ancestors) wooden sculptures, and mask and figure carving. The mask is a primary art form in the Ivory Coast, and the masks of the Baule are greatly influenced by their neighboring peoples, the Senufo and Guro. Ancestor worship and a hierarchy of nature gods make up the religious beliefs of the Baule. Alouroua is the creator god. And though other nature spirits and spouses are represented in sculpture, Alouroua is never physically manifested in art. The Baule are a part of the Akan people who inhabit Ivory Coast and Ghana. Baule african Art Western eyes,1997, p. 153. This well-carved example was worn on the top of the head with a loose cstume made of cotton cloth and/or grasses. Baule animal masks perform during funerals honoring senior men and former dancers of masks and to entertain the the village during a visit of an important guess. Though identified with the sacred forest and the menâ s society they do not appear to have a well defined religious or ritual function. However they serve to protect the village from external danger or war. In any case. They are not to be seen by women during their appearance. They are used in ceremonies of rites of passage and are usually accompanied by elaborate music and choreography. The wearer would have been covered in an elaborate costume hiding his body beneath. Thus the illusion proffered by the mask would be completed.
