SERIOUS COLLECTORS ITEM, BID WITH CONFIDENCE; AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEE# Bamileke tribal Art The Bamileke masks on display was made to the honor king(Fon) and or important chiefs. The piece is regarded as an object of power and is displayed during important rituals and ceremonies. To commemorate and celebrate the royal ancestors of the present Fon. The Colorful beads are the most important part of this mask and the abstract patterns are symbols of great wisdom. The cowry shells depict wealth. The power of the Fon also ensures the protection of his people and guarantees the fertility of the fields and the fecundity of the women. The masks are also used during: 1. Planting and harvesting. 2. For the annual festival of the ... moredry season, 3. At the opening of the royal hunt, 4. For expeditions of war. The masks bearing human and animal figures: The Fon supported by non-secreted societies was believed to have supernatural powers that allowed him to change from man into animal, namely elephant, lizard or buffalo. This allowed him to create a link between the human and spirit realm, to seek guidance from his ancestors. This crossing of the boundaries is only done during special rituals. The elephant and buffalo masks also represent strength and power. Various occupations since the 17th century led to the Bamileke people moving to the South where they intermarried with the Bamum people, this resulted in a cross fertilization of ideas and artistic skills. The Bamilike recognize a supreme god(Si) but they more commonly pay homage to their ancestors. They believe that ancestral spirits are embodied in the skulls. Women are believed to make the soil and land more fertile and are responsible for planting and harvesting crops. The Bamileke men assist with the clearing of the land and are excellent hunters. The Western Grasslands were part of extensive trade routes connecting with the seaport

BAWULE) Côte d'Ivoire The Baule people is one of the largest ethnic group in the Côte d'Ivoire. They have played a central role in twentieth-century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people. And maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. According to a legend. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land ... moreof Senufo. In order to cross the river, she sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. Now about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern Côte d'Ivoire between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. Each village was independent from the others and made its own decisions under the presiding presence of a council of elders. Everyone participated in discussions, including slaves. It was an egalitarian society. The Baule compact villages are divided into wards. Or quarters, and subdivided into family compounds of rectangular dwellings arranged around a courtyard; the compounds are usually aligned on either side of the main village street. The Baule are agriculturists; yams and maize are the staples, supplemented by fish and game; coffee, cocoa and kola nuts are major cash crops. The importance of the yam is demonstrated in a

Traditional animal masks(bonu amuin) are composed of poly-zoomorphic elements taken from animals prominent in everyday life or Baule myth. Most generally seen as a horizontal buffalo mask. Bonu amuin dance to honor visiting dignitaries and during funerals honoring senior men and former dancers of masks. Though identified with the sacred forest and the men’s society they do not appear to have a well defined religious or ritual function. Traditional Baule elements are elaborate hairstyle. Keloid scarification patternsin face, almond shaped eyes, long and finial nose, the small mouth, and the serene expression of the face. This Baule mask falls into a special grouping known as ‘portrait masks’. Kpan Pre, Kpan Kpan. These masks are said to portray an honored person of the village who is celebrated during a ceremonial dance known as “Mblo”. It is an aesthetic performance in which this beautifully carved mask would be worn with a multicolored costume and danced in the most graceful manner by either the person it represents or a relative. The costume would have been attached to the broad collar of the mask by cords that were threaded through the holes at the back of the mask. The “Mblo” dance reflects feminine virtues including graceful movements and elegant dancing steps and celebrates her beauty. They are rarely seen among the Guro and Baule ... morepeople. This miniature is exceptionally well-carved and exhibits details found on Guro masks. Miniatures like this are use as personal mask of initiated adult men and would be carried everywhere When traveling, initiates would take passport masks with them in leather pouches. The masks would serve as protective spirits. Passport masks serve also to mark the passage of an initiate into the men's secret society and his elevation into the higher ranks. They may be presented at meetings of senior members of the men's society to indicate their right to be present and participate in the deliberations. Diviner would recommend that small masks be given to children to wear to ward off evil witches or cure illnesses. Passport masks were kept on personal shrines when not in use. On shrines they would receive the offerings and prayers of their owners and in time would accumulate a rich patina of different substances that could obscure their features. Baule Goli kplekple mask Tribe: Baule Country: Ivory Coast Material: Wood Size: 17.71" 45 cm) 1.86 pounds(845 grams) Condition: Good. Some age wear Masks correspond to several types of dances: the gba gba. The bonu amuen, the mblo and the goli. They never represent the ancestors and are always worn by men. The gba gba is used at the funerals of women during the harvest season. It celebrates beauty and age. Hence its refined features. The double mask represents the marriage of the sun and the moon or twins. Whose birth is always a good sign. The bonu amuen protects the village from external threats; it obliges the woman to a certain discipline; and it appears at the commemorations of death of notables. When they intervene in the life of the community. They take the shape of a wooden helmet that represents a buffalo or antelope and which ... moreis worn with a raffia costume and metal ankle bracelets; the muzzle has teeth. Which incarnate the fierce animal that is to defend the group. Goli is the day-long spectacle that normally involves the whole village and includes the appearance of four pairs of masks. Music played on special instruments. And, ideally, the jojoyous consumption of a great deal of palm wine. Goli can be performed both as an entertainment and for the funeral of important men. The very characteristic. Round-shaped“lunar” goli is surmounted by two horns. It was borrowed from the Wan for a celebration adopted by the Baule after 1900. Celebrating peace and joy. They would sing, dance, and drink palm wine. In the procession, the goli preceded the four groups of dancers. Representing young adolescents. The goli would be used on the occasion of the new harvest, the visit of dignitaries, or at the funerals of notables. The goli kplekple mask is one of several that appear in the Goli spirit dance. It represents a minor spirIt associated with the junior rank of male dancers who perform before the more important masks appear. In keeping with its low status. This mask is made in a simple disk-shaped design and

Baule art is sophisticated and stylistically diverse. Non-inherited. The sculptor’s profession is the result of a personal choice. The Baule have types of sculpture that none of the other Akan peoples possess. Wooden sculptures and masks allow a closer contact with the supernatural world. Literally translated into Guro dialect means"Zaouli, Djeli daughter" The Zaouli is a dance of rejoicing in which each participant must show great skill. He must reveal his talent in all its diversity, originally and quickly in the execution of steps and dance figures. The difficulty of the dancer ... moreis the fact that he should not repeat the same step. With a population of 200.000 the Guro live west of the Baule on the Côte d’Ivoire, in an area of free-filled savannas and dense tropical forest. Originally they were called Kweni, but were given the Baule name Guro by the invading French colonials. The art of the Guro is distinguished by extreme refinement. The Baule and Guro styles are difficult to separate. The Guro style. However, has one or two distinguishing marks: the face of the human mask is usually longish while the forehead and bridge of the nose form an elegant S-shaped profile. The tattoo pattern cut in relief on forehead and cheeks is a repetition of the short protruding tattoo marks on the men’s faces. There are polychrome, as well as black and brown polished masks. There is a much stronger tendency than with the Baule to add animal features to the human face. In some the nose forms an animal-like beak. Rather well known is the zamble mask combining the features of hyena. Crocodile(or leopard) and antelope. Most of them are polychrome. zyama Guro Guro masks represent the spirit of Gu. Baule masks range from the realistic and refined to the abstract and powerful. The best known are the quartet of masks worn during the Goli ritual of celebration and danced in sequence. Although Baule figures had a wide range of use. The actual function of the figures is not easy for outsiders to determine. All were thought to be inhabited by spirits and did not represent ancestors. Small figures include the roughly carved bo usu that helped with hunting and the more refined blolo bla(spirit wife) and blolo bian(spirit husband) that. If well taken care of, helped ... moretheir human partners in all areas of life. The display of the figures would enhance and support the ensuing dance. These Baule mask are said to portray an honored person of the village who is celebrated during a ceremonial dance known as“Mblo” The“Mblo” dance reflects feminine virtues including graceful movements and elegant dancing steps and celebrates her beauty. These masks are danced to entertain during days that the Baule do not work and they will also appear to honor important visitors to the village. In Baule tradition. Mblo is the name of a performance category that uses face masks in skits and solo dances. Mblo masks, used in entertainment dances are one of the oldest of Baule art forms. These refined human face masks are usually portraits of particular known individuals. Mblo masks embody the core Baule sculpture style manifested in figures and decorated objects– spoons, combs, pulleys and the like. Lustrous curving surfaces. Suggesting clean, healthy, well-fed skin, are set off by delicately textured zones representing coiffures, scarification’s, and other ornaments. The idealized faces are introspective, with the high foreheads and the large downcast eyes. Orna

Exquisite African Art - Baule "Kuamanbo" Ram Mask
Exquisite African Art- Baule"Kuamanbo" Ram Mask Baule"Kuamanbo" Ram Mask Tribe: Baule Origin: Cote D'ivoire Materials: Wood& Pigment Dimensions cm: 32 Tall x 22 Wide x 19 Depth Approx Age: Mid- Later 20th Century This mask was field collected from a village between Bandama river and Bouake The ram. And in specific the ram’s horns, have been a potent symbol in world mythology throughout the ages. Throughout time, spanning across divergent cultures and civilizations, the ram has been a traditional symbol of male fertility. The power and majesty of this beast has been long revered by mankind, and this was especially true of the Baule tribe who identified the ram and their tribal symbol. Masks are commonly used among many African cultures to facilitate the bond between the people and their ancestors and divinities. ... moreMasks instil social order, and can bring forth prosperity as well as misfortune. They are used in ceremonies of rites of passage and are usually accompanied by elaborate music and choreography. Among the Baule, who are believed to over a million people, there are two general forms of masks: animal and human. This mask is of a type that would have been worn and danced with during the Goli festival related to the harvest and to funerals of important tribal leaders. The wearer would have been covered in an elaborate costume hiding his body beneath. Thus the illusion proffered by the mask would be completed. The mask seeks not to disguise the wearer but to transform him into a medium through which the spirit world could communicate with the villages using the language of rhythm and gesture. The Baule judged their art by strict criteria including a smooth finish, the clarity of line, and a slight inherent asymmetry; clearly this mask would have been heralded as a masterpiece by the Baule themselves. If postage is less than stated we will refund the difference as we only charge for the cost of the actual shipping not for packaging. We will post worldwide. Please contact for a price. W

RARE & AMAZING 13 " H OLD AFRICAN BAULE MASK I. COAST
check out my ms!Be sure to add me to your! SUPERB OLD(APPROX 40YEARS) HAND CARVED WOOD BAULE MASK I. COAST MEASURING:13" IN H BY 8" W.AMAZING ART WORK FANTASTIC FACE IN PERSON.DO NOT MISS IT THANKS. The Baule use three major types of masks: a helmet in the shape of a buffalo head. Masks related only to the Goli festival and the masks representing a human face with fairly realistic features. The masks of the last group are used in mblo entertainment dances and are one of the oldest of Baule art forms. Such a mask is usually a portrait of a particular known individual. The faces are idealized. Ornaments above the face have no iconographic significance, but most often they are animal horns springing straight from the head. These masks denote personal beauty. Refinement. And a desire to give pleasure to others. The greater importance ... moreof the portrait masks, the need for the best dancers to wear them, and the requirement that the portrait’s subject also be available and willing to dance made them more rarely performed than animal masks, which could be worn by young, relatively inexperienced dancers. Material: wood
