This mask is from a collection that was assembled by an airline pilot in the 1950's. I'm no expert. But wouldn't be surprised if it is actually older than that. It is surprisingly light weight. The grass beard is in great condition considering how delicate it is. Overall measurements are 10 inches tall. And 9 inches wide. Feel free to ask questions. These were found in the village just proped up against the huts whilst the Goli festival is on going! Goli is the day-long spectacle that normally involves the whole village and includes the appearance of four pairs of masks. Music played on special instruments, and, ideally, the jojoyous consumption of a great deal of palm wine. Goli can be performed both as an entertainment and for the funeral of important men. The very characteristic, round-shaped“lunar” goli is surmounted by two horns. It was borrowed from the Wan for a celebration ... moreadopted by the Baule after 1900. Celebrating peace and joy, they would sing, dance, and drink palm wine. In the procession, the goli preceded the four groups of dancers, representing young adolescents. Rare old Bena Lulua Mask with headdress. The Lulua(luluwa) people are in fact a collection of small groups whose home bordered by the larger Luba state and the related and. With whom they share a very similar culture, history, and language. Lulua masks, artifacts and figures are hard to get nowadays as their people's art vanishes with time. From my collection here is a rare, used in the village and striking old mask from the Lulua. The raffia and wicker hood from the headdress still intact. In my educated guess I estimate this mask to be 40 to 50 years old. An unrestrained and overwhelming looking mask! It measures 17 inches from north to south, not including the headdress. Beautiful 3D Vintage Baule Tribe Mask from the Ivory Coast
This mask is a beautiful example of the traditional masks worn by the Baule Tribe of the Ivory Coast of Africa. Created out of wood. With 3dimensional attributes, the mask is carved to show the rare strength and beauty of the Baule Tribe. The mask is painted black and white, but given the age of the piece(estimated over 50 years old) there is some mild wear on the paint. The mask is approximately 3 pounds. BAWULE) Côte d'Ivoire The Baule people is one of the largest ethnic group in the Côte d'Ivoire. They have played a central role in twentieth-century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people. And maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. According to a legend. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the ... moreland of Senufo. In order to cross the river, she sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. Now about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern Côte d'Ivoire between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. Each village was independent from the others and made its own decisions under the presiding presence of a council of elders. Everyone participated in discussions, including slaves. It was an egalitarian society. The Baule compact villages are divided into wards. Or quarters, and subdivided into family compounds of rectangular dwellings arranged around a courtyard; the compounds are usually aligned on either side of the main village street. Called ândomaâ by the Baule. They are said to portray an honored person of the village who is celebrated during a ceremonial dance known as âMbloâ. It is an aesthetic performance in which this beautifully carved mask would be worn with a multicolored costume and danced in the most graceful manner by either the person it represents or a relative. The costume would have been attached to the mask by cords that were threaded through the holes at the back of the mask. The âMbolaâ dance reflects feminine virtues including graceful movements and elegant dancing steps and celebrates her beauty. These masks are danced to entertain during days that the Baule do not work and they will also appear to honor important visitors to the village. This well used and classic mask recalls the artistry of the Baule artists of the past. The refined and finally carved face may be similar to the person for whom the mask was originally carved to represent. Unbelievably time intensive, and makes one-of-a-kind pieces. A casting mask in the form of a crocodile head with an open mouth showing pointed teeth, and open eyes. There are fine motifs around the eyes and the top. This lost wax cast of a copper alloy mask(bronze or brass) comes from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast in west Africa. Though masks are not normally used by the greater number of Akan peoples including the Asante or Fante, they are often found attached to various chiefly regalia prominent on sword sheaths or chiefly stools. They represent human and animal heads and are sometimes used as trophies. It is difficult to determine the age of this fine mask however the delicacy of the treatment of the facial details show that this was the product of a skilled craftsman and a long tradition of casting in West Africa. Baule Goli African Tribal Mask Large. Checkerboard Pattern Wall Hanging Outstanding- Large African Mask in the Baule Goli style. I got this at an auction and I don't have any information about the background or where it came from. It is hand-hewn and all of the details identify this mask with the Baule Goli masks. However-the back of the mask does not have a place for the face or any breathing holes. I think it must have been created for decoration or sale instead of for use in ceremonies. This mask is 45" tall from the top of the horns to the bottom. It is 26.25" wide. It would stick out about 3" from the wall. The back of the mask has the word"Bass" in chalk. There are two screws at the base of the horns presumably for mounting on the wall. There are also two screws around the middle sides of the mask with a ... morewire for hanging on the wall. Good Condition-There are some minor dings and scratches to the wood. There is one place on the horn that looks like a crack-but when you look at it closely it is where the wood was joined. This is a lovely wood Mblo portrait mask. ca. Early/mid 20 th century) from the Baule people of Côte d’Ivoire(Ivory Coast) in Western Africa. app. 13"H x 6"W x4"D at the widest points. Beautifully carved antique African tribal wooden mask with arching eyebrows. Raised scarification marks on the cheeks, forehead, temples; an elaborate coif parted in the middle and unusual vertical crescent scarification on both sides of mouth. The carved and well polished surface has some traces of the original decoration around the eyes and the coif area. E xceptional for its individuality. Highly refined details, graceful lines and age. Very appealing for its unusual depth that enables strong three-quarter views. The broad forehead and downcast eyes are classic features associated with intellect and respect in Baule aesthetics. Dents in places, Additional Information: A small double Faces mask placed among the Baule people of the Ivory Coast who are close neighbors ... moreof the Yaure and Guro. The mask is elegant and shows finial details. The Baule. Yaure and Guro share similar social practices and some stylistic elements in their masks and carvings. In fact the mask could come from the better-known Baule where double(large or small) masks were also found or it could be simply an amalgamation of style elements from Baule, Guro, and Yaure. It is interesting to notice that surface on this mask shows traces of white pigment, and dark material encrusted on indicating its age and long use and by doing so further blurs traditional stylistic identifiers associated with the entioned peoples of Cote dâivoire. Among the Baule mask with a pair of carved faces probably represent a male-female couple. But its precise use is unknown. The pair could be a couple more than likely connected to Baule mythology. But the Yaure masks are used primarily for the Lo ceremony and at times may dance in the Je ritual celebration that cleanses the village after the death of an individual. They can also represent âYuâ a spiritual power. Though the mask has two faces carved on it the wearer would look out of the hole located between the two faces.
