Indonesia Hand carved Toba Batak Hasapi with fantastic patina body and neck made from a solid piece of wood with a top sound plate attached without the use of nails. This instrument measures around 28in long and around 4in at its widest, hand carved Effie or sitting man at the top, original wood pegs not replaced there are no cracks in the body. Traditionally, the hasapi was crafted ... morefrom a single piece of wood, hollowed out through a small hole on the underside with incredible precision; the wooden soundtable of especially fine instruments are wafer-thin. More recent hasapi, such as that in Grinnell’s collection, are constructed of at least two pieces of wood– a rounded wooden body and a thin wooden soundtable attached with nails. The neck and body are lightly ornamented, and the headstock is carved in the shape of a seated man. The hasapi’s two wire strings are tuned to an interval between a major and minor third. It is sometimes referred to as a“boat lute” due to the resemblance between its profile and that of canoes found in the same area of Indonesia. The hasapi is a two stringed musical instrument of Indonesia. Particularly played by the Batak people because although the instrument is played by others, it is not called a"hasapi" by them. This instrument is described as a pentatonic two-stringed lute, often referred to as a Kucapi(Pak-Pak/Dairi) or husapi(Simalungun) Kacapi(2 stringed mandolin, with no frets. This is an antique architectural decoration that is used above a doorway to a traditional house. Even though it was under the eves you can still see signs of water and wind erosion. Still retains some of the original paint! The SINGA i s described as"part human. Part water buffalo, and part crocodile or lizard" It i s a magical emblem that represents benevolent and protective power. It is a traditional symbol in Batak culture and tradition. Old Batak Stone Sculpture of a Warrior 19th - early 20th century Sumatra
Offered is a superb and old stone sculpture of a warrior made by the Batak people of interior Sumatra in Indonesia. This piece is carved from a hard stone and has a great old patina. The warrior is rendered in a standing position with his legs crossed. His right arm holding a sword above his head and his left arm holding his shield on the right side of his body. This is not a made for the tourist market piece and is a significant example of tribal arts. It measures 6-1/2 inches in height.

Antique/vintage beaded shawl. Indonesia/ North Sumatra. Batak ulos, ceremonial..
This is a very unusual textile. It is an Indonesian ceremonial shawl; it would be worn by women at certain festivals. It is a complex piece- the base is a fairly heavy woven cotton with longitudinal stripes of purple. Blue, yellow and pink in the weave. The horizontal bands are embroidered in bright colours and metalic thread. There is applied white bead work throughout, quite heavy in places. The words'Dame Madi Hita' are embroidered to either side of the central panel, this translates as'Peace among us' The entire piece(not including fringe) measures 70 cm by 215 cm. I do not know the age of this piece it is vintage rather than antique- the quality is very fine. I am selling many interesting things this week. Please take a look. Thank you.
