Read more about the culture behind these masks by visiting the website Zyama(dot com) An excerpt from this site appears below. This seller is not affiliated ... morewith the operator of the Zyama site. The Bambara numbering 2.500.000 million form the largest ethnic group within Mali. The triangle of the Bambara region, divided in two parts by the Niger River, constitutes the greater part of the western and southern Mali of today. After a ritual bath that signals the end of their animal life, the new initiates become“Jo children. Initially the ntomo was a society for uncircumcised boys. Today it closely resembles various Western associations in its bureaucratic structure and its administrative and membership fees. There are two main style groups of their masks. One is characterized by an oval face with four to ten horns in a row on top like a comb. Often covered with cowries or dried red berries. The other type has a ridged nose, a protruding mouth, a superstructure of vertical horns, in the middle of which or in front of which is a standing fi

African Bambara tribal Chiwaras male & female with baby ethnographic sculptures
Chiwara is a ritual object representing an antelope used by the Bambara tribal group of Mali. The Chiwara masks as well as dances and rituals are used by the initiation society associated primarily with agriculture. Chiwara masks are categorized in three ways; horizontal. Vertical, or abstract. In addition Chiwara can be either male or female. Female Chiwara are denoted by the presence of a baby antelope on her back side. The designs of the Chiwara vary by region and time produced. The Chiwara is one of the icons of what Europeans call primitive art. Picasso. Braque, and Les Fauves became fascinated with African sculpture and masks in general and the Chiwara figures in particular. It is traditional with the Bambara not to separate a family of three. The male, female, and the child. They believe it is a family and should remain together. For ... morethat reason and out of respect for the tradition we are offering these as a family. The male measures 47" tall and 14" wide at the widest point from front to back and 8" from side to side at the base. The female measures 38" tall and 11.5" wide from front to back and 8" wide from side to side at the base. They are made of wood, hair, cloth, metal, and cowrie shells and beads. A beautiful family and well worth collecting. Shipping is not included in the price as these are large and delicate and require special attention to the packing and shipping. We will put you in touch with our local shipping company so that you may deal directly with them. They will shop for the best possible price and pack these treasures perfectly for their journey!

Chiwaras Mali et female, African Bambara du Mali tribal mask.
A Chiwara(also Chi wara. Ci Wara, or Tyi Wara; Bambara: ciwara; French: tchiwara) is a ritual object representing an antelope, used by the Bambara ethnic group in Mali. The Chiwara initiation society uses Chiwara masks, as well as dances and rituals associated primarily with agriculture, to teach young Bamana men social values as well as agricultural techniques.Chiwara masks are categorized in three ways: horizontal, vertical, or abstract. In addition, Chiwara can be either male or female. Female Chiwara masks are denoted by the presence of a baby antelope and straight horns. Male Chiwara masks have bent horns and a phallus. The sex of a Chiwara mask is much clearer on horizontal and vertical masks while abstract masks tend to be difficult to classify. The designs of the Chiwara vary by region and time produced. The Chiwara is one of the icons ... moreof what Europeans call primitive art.Picasso, Braque, and Les Fauves became fascinated with African sculpture and masks in general and the Chiwara figures in particular. This Chiwara is not wood. It was cast in resin. It is a beautiful reproduction and very sturdy. At first sight it is difficult to tell that it is not wood, other than the dark gray color. Dimension: it stand tall little over 2 feet(27.8 inch) wide 6inch, weight:1.5 lb

They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. Exquiste Bambara Ntomo Ceremonial Mask With Aluminum Sheeting, Mali
French researchers in the 20th century were fascinated by the complexity of Ntomo. Under this mask boys in training re-enacted the creation of the world. The figures and the number of horns are intended to“reveal the inner life of the human being” and symbolized important principles; four referred to femininity, three was a male number and seven was the number of the couple. The female figure was also described as a reference to sacred history, primordial man in his androgynous state and a reminder to boys of the training they had received concerning the opposite sex. Ntomo gathers pre-pubescent boys, separates them from their families, organizes them into age grades, and conducts training that culminates with their ritual circumcision. Superb African Mud cloth Bogolan bambara bogolanfini Pillow Mali
Superb 2 African Mud cloth pillows with amazing rust.Black and white colors measures approx: 15" by 15" and 12" by 11" with a zipper on the back and poly fill pillow thanks If you have never experienced authentic African mud cloth. You are in for a rare experience! Real mud cloth is one of the very few fabrics which is still completely made by hand! And we do mean completely! Mudcloth is a fabric originating in Mali. Africa. The cotton is often raised on small, family farms, using very simple, labor intensive methods. After being picked and cleaned, it is spun into rough yarns. These fibers are woven into 5-6 inch wide strips, traditionally by the men of the village, on hand looms. Not only is this time-consuming, but you need 7-10 strips, each around 5-6 feet long, in order to create an average size fabric piece! The ... morestrips are sewn together, and here, we admit, is where a machine may come into use. Sometimes the strips are connected by a worker with a hand operated sewing machine, sometimes by a sewer. Notice that either method is still done by hand. Before decorating. The cloth is soaked in a tea from the N'Galaman or N'Tjankara trees, or occasionally other types. This stain acts like a fixative for the colors to come and may give the fabric a tannish background shade. It's also where the alternative term of"bogolan" originated. Now prior to this, dyes from boiling, mashing, and fermenting of various roots, leaves, flowers, stems, fruits, and seeds, are mixed with mud and allowed to age, often for up to a year, until they reach the correct colors. Each artist has his or her own carefully guarded formulas for the hues, and secret spots for procurring the muds. Hence the"mud cloth" term. This process may take years for the creators to learn, as not only dyes, but also their reactions with cloth and fixatives must be known. Traditionally, this was done by the women of the village, but nowadays men also do the designing. These pastes are individually applied, was

Exhibited Bamana Bambara Jo Jonyele Jonyeleni figure African Mali - no reserve
Amazing and very curvy Bamana figure portraying a beautiful young woman. A maiden with large round(gravity defying) breast and a curvacious butt. She really is quite exceptional. The Jonyeleni figure represents the aesthetic ideal of youthful beauty allied to the characterization of an ideal society of order and structure. Thus. This figure is identified as being a"Jonyeleni" a member of the Jo society, a woman's and men's initiation society among the Bamana. Young women will carry sculptures such as this from village to village indicating that they are no longer children but mature women ready and available for marriage. This takes place on a seven year cycle of initiation of boys and girls into this level of Jo Society membership. The sculptures carried by the young women serve as paradigms of beauty and well being reflecting ... morethe physical attributes of ideal beauty that the Jonyeleni reflects to others. This idealization of beauty is reflected in the scarification and body markings as well as her stylized coiffure. In some cases, jewelry and clothing would be attached to the figure to enhance their attractiveness. This well carved figure also characterizes the essence of womanhood and of social cohesion that results from the order and structure of the Jo woman's society. I have paid quite a bit for my collection over the years but will set a low starting price and let you decide what they are worth to you. The low starting price is not an indication of low value.
