Depth is 16 inches. Overall Condition, Poor. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners. Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Some missing cowrie shells. Chips and minor crack in top of crest, encrustation worn away in small places, cracks, Bamana or Marka Janus Mask Huge with Encrustation Stand is for illustration. I can have one made if buyer wants one. Stands upright on own. Additional Information: An extraordinary mask. Extremely heavy, with wonderful encrusted patina. Use unknown. This is an imposing two faced wooden surmounted by two carved horns and a median hairstyle. Janiform masks are commonly found among the Marka, the Bamana and the Malinke. In all these cultures, such masks are probably related to the N'Tomo initiation masks worn by young boys. Marka masks are usually covered with brass sheet. The present mask is decorated with cowrie shells and covered with a heavy encrusted patina, which tells the mask was receiving sacrificial elements as part of a shrine. Its imposing shape and its worn surface make this piece desirable! The Marka, living in Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso are neighbors of the Bamana. Today they are heavily Islamised, however they often retain the use of masks and figures for ceremonies and rituals closely related to the Bamana. Stand is for illustration. I can have one made if buyer wants one. Recommended Reading: Kerchache's ART OF AFRICA. I have examined this piec

Bamana Bambara Chi Wara Chiwara Ci Wara Tyi Wara Mali- no reserve
The Bambara of Mali are notable highly successful farmers. As they were when the first slave ships traveled the Atlantic from the sources of the Senegal and Gambia rivers to the Gulf Coast of Louisiana at the Mississippi Sound onto Ile Dauphine and on through Lake Borgne and Lake Pontchartrain to Bayou St. Jean or to the Balise and up Mississippi River, to New Orleans in the early years of the 18th century. The Bambara attributed their success to the lessons learned from a half-human. Half-animal deity called chi wara. working wild animal. Chi wara(or tsi wara) With his hooves and his mother's pointed stick, tilled the soil and turned wild grasses into grain. But because the people wasted the grain, chi wara returned to the earth. The farmers then created art and dance to recall him and his powers over nature. These headdresses feature ... morethe antelope. Giving visual form to important religious beliefs about fertility and growth. They were worn in dances at the beginning of the rainy season(or when a fallow field was re-seeded) to assure a good harvest. Dancers who wore these headdresses covered their bodies with long grasses and cloth. They went bent over using two canes, believing that if they stood upright, they would offend the deity. The dancers accompanied farmers to the fields, supervised the planting, and then returned to the village where they danced. The dance consisted of jumps, sudden leaps and turns reminiscent of the actions of the antelope. Three different styles of chi wara headdresses have been associated with distinct geographic areas within Mali. The first is a vertical style in which the body and legs of the male antelope are small. But the mane, nuzzle and horns are elongated and elaborated. Its open work mane with a zigzag pattern is said to represent the course of the sun across the sky during the agricultural year. The female antelope in contrast is depicted simply as carrying a young on its back. This vertical style is typically found in the eastern parts of Mali(Segou region) The s

The Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habits and ways of making the necessary implements, their carvings. Over seventy anthropomorphic and zoomorphic mask types have been recorded among the Dogon. The masks evoke the form of animals associated with their mythology. Yet their significance in many cases is understood only by the highest ranking cult members whose role is to explain the meaning of each mask. The crocodile mask was worn by dancers during ceremonies that protected the people from the malevolent influences of slain crocodiles. Very Rare Bambara N'tomo Ceremonial Mid Century Mask
Authentic Bambara N'tomo Ceremonial Mid Century Mask. Circa 1950 Background: The Bambara are a large Mande racial group located mostly in the country of Mali. They are the largest and most dominant group in that country. Across the border in Mauritania. There are about 1000 Bambara living near the town of Timbedra. The Bambara live in the middle valley of the Niger River. Even though most Bambara claim to be Muslim. Many people still follow their traditional beliefs in ancestor worship. The Bambara trust that the ancestral spirits may take on the forms of animals or even vegetables. In extraordinary ceremonies, the spirits are worshipped and presented with offerings of flour and water. The oldest member of a lineage act as the"mediator" between the living and the dead. quoted from africaguide.com) The Mask: as per randafricanart.com) ... moreThis Bambara Ntomo mask and others were worn by boys as they passed through the early cycle of initiation into manhood. The masks reinforce the lessons the boys are taught as they are prepared by elder males in the society for circumcision. There are two main style groups of their masks. One is characterized by an oval face with four to ten horns in a row on top like a comb. Often covered with cowries or dried red berries. The other type has a ridged nose. A protruding mouth, a superstructure of vertical horns, in the middle of which or in front of which is a standing figure or an animal. The ntomo masks with thin mouths underscore the virtue of silence and the importance of controlling one’s speech. During their time in ntomo the boys learn to accept discipline. African Mask Mali Bambara Tribe Vintage Wood & Tin
For your consideration. This stunning vintage Bambara tribal mask from Mali, Africa. This is carved wood decorated with cut patterns of tin. T he little square mouth represents the virtue of silence and the benefit of controlled speech. This is 24.25" tall and 8" wide at the base of the horns. This would project 5.25" from the wall. This has overall scuffs and the two outer horns on the right side have cracks in them but they are very firm. See pics. I'm pretty sure this used to have some earrings, lost now. There are two holes on the back for wiring to hang, but the holes on the other side of the mask have worn through, but you could easily use an eye-hook to hang it up. I love this mask. It makes me think of a primitive robot! This is an older mask. Possibly antique, but to err on the side of caution I'll just say ... moreit's vintage. My guess is 1940's if not older. Pin's History: This exceptional piece of jewelry was made as tribal ornament to be worn on special occasions. It was not created as a tourist souvenir. Purchased DIRECTLY by parents when living in Nigeria in the 1970s. ... moreThey collected only quality African jewelry and art. Acquired from an artisan trader in Kano. Nigeria, who would visit my parents each month with new crafts for sale. To further attest that this piece is handmade by a tribal craftsman rather than a professional. Look closely and compare surfaces–ultra-smooth finish made by a commercial silver company vs handmade with basic tools– this piece has miniscule surface cooling patterns on its back. The silver was most likely blended and smelted by the artist himself and occurred during its cooling stage(decorative front surface is smooth) Plus, the silver has a slight gold tint on back bottom- comes from a bit too much copper mixed with the raw African silver. Description: Beautifully detailed. Hand tooled silver Bambara brooch. Secures with a stick pin on back. Measures almost 3" tall by 1" wide(see photo with coin for size comparison) Weighs 1/4 ounce(7 grams) Condition: No damage. Still in the same condition as the day acquired. My mother rarely wore it so it sat in her jewelry box for decades. Then in mine as well. I have not used silver cleaner on it ever as it wasn't needed– did so because I thought it was best
