Read more about the culture behind these masks by visiting the website Zyama(dot com) An excerpt from this site appears below. This seller is not affiliated ... morewith the operator of the Zyama site. The Bambara numbering 2.500.000 million form the largest ethnic group within Mali. The triangle of the Bambara region, divided in two parts by the Niger River, constitutes the greater part of the western and southern Mali of today. The dry savanna permits no more than a subsistence economy, and the soil produces, with some difficulty, corn, millet, sorghum, rice, and beans. Their traditions include six male societies, each with its own type of mask. Initiation for men lasts for seven years and ends with their symbolic death and their rebirth. Nearly every Bambara man had to pass through these societies in succession, until, upon reaching the highest rank, he had acquired a comprehensive knowledge of ancestral traditions. The jo society has become a sort of framework for other initiation society. Until a few decades ago. Initiation was obligatory for every young man. During this time, the young men go through a ritual death and live one week in the bush before returning to the village. There they publicly perform the dances and songsthey have learned in the bush, and receive small presents from spectators. After a ritual bath that signals the end of their animal life, the new initiates become“Jo children. Initially the ntomo was a society for uncircumcised boys. Today it closely resembles various Western associations in its bureaucratic structure and its administrative and membership fees. There are two main style groups of their masks. One is characterized by an oval face with four to ten horns in a row on top like a comb. Often covered with cowries or dried red berries. The other type has a ridged nose, a protruding mouth, a superstructure of vertical horns, in the middle of which or in front of which is a standing fi

Also called Bamana, form the largest ethnic group within Mali and occupy the central part of the country, in an area of savannah. They live principally from agriculture, with some subsidiary cattle rearing in the northern part of their territory. The Bambara people are predominantly animists, although recently the Muslim faith has been spreading among them. The Bambara kingdom was founded in the 17th century and reached its pinnacle between 176o, and 1787 during the reign of N'golo Diarra. N'golo Diarra is credited with conquering the Peul people and in turn claimed the cities of Dienne and Timbuktu. However, during the 19th century, the kingdom began to decline and ultimately fell to the French when they arrived in 1892. For the most part, Bambara society is structured around six male societies, known as the Dyow. It seems the value of good African items has a lot to do with Provenance. 18" long x 17.5"tall( without base) This is in the form of an Antelope and used for Agricultural ceremonies. This one is much nicer than the tourist ones you see exported to the US from Africa. this is a tribal used piece. What really great about this piece is the Provenance. This was sold at an estate auction of Betty Fitz Henry and she was friends with Donna Cecelia Di Marco( 1931-2009) wife of Rocco ... moreDi Marco. Both of Grosse Pointe Michigan. A very wealthy Family of known artists and collectors. They collected many great pieces of art from all over the world. Malika Marka Bambara Bamana Tribe from Mali Antelope Mask
This wood& copper mask is a one of a kind mask. Hand made by the artists of West Africa. This is a Bambara mask from Mali. The Bambara people are agrarian and regard the antelope as the ideal animal and the mythical being that taught men to farm. Therefore. Antelope horns such as these feature commonly on their masks. Also common in their masks are the dried red berries at the tips of the horns. On this masks such is represented by the red pigmentation on the tips of the three hair strands falling across the face. This particular mask falls in one of two classes of ntomo masks. The ntomo society was for uncircumcised boys and towards their training to become men in the society. There are expected to meditate on the virtues of ntomo masks. This kind of ntomo mask bears an oval face with a ridged nose and thin protruding mouth. The mouth ... moreis meant to teach the importance of silence and the virtue of restraint in speech. It is only after the discipline taught by this mask is learnt that boys are allowed to proceed to the next level where they are intimated with the secret knowledge of the tribe. Nicely executed with overlays of brass& tin attached with small tacks. Now rusted. Aged patina with moderate amounts of oxidation. There are minor defect because of age. Especially inside top edge, tips of horns have minor damage. Metal makes up much of the face of the mask( 18 inches tall) with geometric patterns on the metal and typical red hanging tassels. Bambara Bamana Wooden Hand-Carved Antique Antelope Headress
Bambara Bamana Wooden Hand-Carved Antique Antelope Headress This Mask is worn by one of the six male tribes of Mali in Africa. The antelope holds great significance to the Mali people. According to one interpretation of a myth. The male antelope represents the sun and the female the earth. The antelope imagery of the carved headdress was inspired by a Bambara myth that recounts the story of a mythical beast(half antelope and half human) who introduced agriculture to the Bambara people. The dance performed by the masqueraders mimes the movements of the antelope. Antelope headdress in the vertical style, found in eastern Bambara territory, have a pair of upright horns. The male antelopes are decorated with a mane consisting of rows of openwork zigzag patterns and gracefully curved horns, while the female antelope supports baby antelopes on ... moretheir back and have straight horns. The dancers appeared holding two sticks in their hands, their leaps imitating the jumps of the antelopes. From the artistic point of view the tji wara are probably the finest examples of stylized African art. For with a delicate play of line the sensitive carvings display the natural beauty of the living antelope. This mask was purchased at an estate auction of original. Carved, wooden African Art. Please see pictures for details as one of the horns has been damaged at the tip. It was bought this way at the auction. The mask measures 36" at its longest point and 11" wide. Mali The Bambara numbering 2.500.000 million form the largest ethnic group within Mali. The triangle of the Bambara region, divided in two parts by the Niger River, constitutes the greater part of the western and southern Mali of today. The dry savanna permits no more than a subsistence economy, and the soil produces, with ... moresome difficulty, corn, millet, sorghum, rice, and beans. Jo initiations take place every seven years. After candidates receive six years of special training. During this time, the young men go through a ritual death and live one week in the bush before returning to the village. There they publicly perform the dances and songsthey have learned in the bush, and receive small presents from spectators. After a ritual bath that signals the end of their animal life, the new initiates become“ Jo children. Initially the ntomo was a society for uncircumcised boys. Today it closely resembles various Western associations in its bureaucratic structure and its administrative and membership fees.

AFRICAN ART - PAIR OF OLD BAMBARA CHIWARA SMALL ANTELOPE HEADDRESSES 19" & 21.5"
Acquired in 1982. The pair appeared old then, but the exact age is hard to guess. They appear to have been carved by the same artist or in a very similar style. They are both carved in extremely light weight wood. Perhaps the female is a bit younger(which would explain the difference in color) because it weighs 7 ¾ oz, whereas the male weighs just 7 ½" and yet it appears to contain little more wood. The female is 20 ½" tall and 4 ¾" wide, the male is 19" tall and also 4 ¾" wide. Such small vertical style head crests are hard to find. During the time I worked and lived in Liberia(in early 1980's) I started collecting African art. Both traditional and contemporary, I continued enlarging my collection when, few years later, I returned to work in Africa, in Zaire(now Democratic Republic of ... moreCongo) I collected these items for their decorative value and can not vouch that they were actually used in rituals, that did not interest me. All such items, which I am selling now on Ebay, were either purchased by me or received as gifts from my coworkers or missionaries I worked with while in Africa. Feel free to ask questions.

Vintage African Mali Bambara Hand Carved Ancestral Male Figure 12" Tall
Up for sale is the second of several hand carved African figures I will be making available for sale. This is a great hand carved male Bambara figure. This piece was decorated with cane/reeds that were wrapped around the body. Arms, and legs along with blue and white beads. The beads are on what looks to be twine/braided 3 piece string. The beads themselves are not of consistent size and may be made from stone as I did not see any areas of color loss when looked at with a loop. The white beads may have at one time been colored, it is difficult to tell if they are dirty or if they were colored and the paint/coloring wore off the surface over the years. The body looks to have been made from two pieces as a split can be seen between the legs though it is also possible that the reed wrapping may have been added later to repair the piece. This ... morepiece was most definitely hand carved and is in great condition with some areas of surface wear, chips/small areas of loss along the feet and one crack that runs along the crest as can be seen in the photographs. Please note that this piece also will not stand on it's own on a level surface. My estimate would be that this is piece was made sometime in the latter part of the 20th century, however I am not an expert and will let you be the judge of how old the piece is. This piece has a great look and though it does show some wear, it would look great in any room or make a nice addition to any collection. The figure stands approximately 12" tall. Please note that I am not an expert on African antiquities and would welcome additional information on this piece. Please see pictures and ask all questions prior to buying. I will be happy to supply additional pictures/information upon request. This is being sold as is. And returns are not accepted. Free Shipping in the U.S.

Genuine old used Bamana Hyena mask. missing ear . Bambara baule baoule ibeji
Genuine old used Bamana Hyena mask from early/mid 20th century. The left ear is missing. Long in the past, probably prior to collection. May also have suffered insect damage to the left side of face. Despite this, the mask is a good genuine piece, powerful abstract cubist design and displays well( see main picture) especially when well lit. Overall the patina is old and dry but with some polished wood areas on edges. Particularly the length of the nose and around the mouth. Covered in a lifetimes scratches, dents and wear. Despite the ravages of time, the mask is solid and not fragile. Detail to the nose is the string decoration. Originally string decorations would have lined the ears. The string attachment at the back may have been just for hanging it is dirty and not as white as it appears in the right side pictures( ie it is not recently ... moreadded) Bears inventory numbers on the back. Red pen on white paint, probably from an American museum, indicating it was catalogued in 1993 but this mask is considerably older) Mounted on an oak display stand.
