Handcrafted African Mask From Bamana
Our African masks are the works of skilled craftsmen. Created according to the requirements of tribal rules and customs, usually in the primitive conditions of a remote village. We would like to share our understanding of African art and hope that the ancient beliefs and rituals will fascinate you even more now, when another"piece" of African spirit will occupy that special place in your home. The mask displayed here is from the Bamana Tribe of Nigeria. It measures 16 x 7.5 inches

BAMANA CHIWARA TJI WARA MALI #2322 - For African Art Gallery
BAMANA CHIWARA FIGURE#2320 Tribe: Bamana. Country: Mali. Material: Wood. Size: 24" 61 cm) long. Item: 2322 Condition: Good for its age. Definate signs of wear and chipping to the base. See images. Provenance: James E. Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) The term tyi wara or Chi wara(westernized form) denotes a cult. Divine power and a farming association at one and the same time. The cult reveals the presence of a healing power, supervising farming activities, which appears in the form os a pair of masked dancers. The festivities celebrate the manifestation in the world of men of the mythical animal which taught them how to farm. This animal does not correspond to any known species of nature' but rather is a compostite creature made up of the features of several species that include various antelopes, anteaters, pangolins, guinea ... morefowl and cameleons. Tyi means"work" More specifically agricultural labor. Wara means"wild animal" implying fierceness and the presence of claws. The expression tyiwara as a whole covers a number of meanings. It can be the name given to a power to which sons of praise and prayers are addressed, but it can also be a generic name for all agrarian cults supported by a youth association. An object well known to collectors of African Art, is an elegant wooden crest carved with animal features and normally attached to a textile or rattan headdress. The dancer often wears a black raffia cape that covers him from head to foot, and a red textile cagoule decorated with cowrie shells is sometimes used to extend the headdress. Two young officiants have the job of sprinkling water over the fibres, suggesting in a highly effective manner the driving rain. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! This mask does indicate the skill of the blacksmith in casting a mask out of a medium much more difficult to work than wood. There have been a number of metal mask-like sculptures from the Bamana of Mali. There is long tradition of figurative iron. Bronze and brass casting in the Western Sudan reaching back to the period of the great ... moreEmpire of Mali as early as the 12 th century. The age of this interestingly brass mask is undetermined but it does reflect an earlier period of bronze or brass casting. The facial features on this mask are similar to those found on wood sculptures from the Bamana. These masks are forged by blacksmiths working them into shapes that could be worn. Simply carried, or kept in a ritual location. Today there is no active tradition of these masks being used. The artistic diversity of the Bamana is without doubt one of the most astounding. And confounding, of all West African groups. It is interesting that perhaps their closest rivals in complexity are their neighbors to the north and east, the Dogon, with whom they share certain stylistic similarities. Complex religious, funerary, initiation, and agricultural rites have resulted in an enormous pantheon of ritual objects. When collectors think of Bamana, the image of a"chi wara" often leaps to mind. These stunning, zoomorphic headdresses, danced during the planting of crops, employ the carved head and horns of antelopes, as well as zig-zag, open-work designs, reportedly representing the path of the sun. A basketry, cap-like structure would be attached to the bottom so that it can be worn. Other recognizable masks are not as well understood, and their use reflects the mind-boggling complexity of the predominantly animist Bamana religion. Among these are the animal-form masks,

BAMANA KORE SOCIETY MASK - MALI
BAMANA KORE SOCIETY MASK- MALI The Kore is the last of the six initiation societies. These societies are run by a few elders and act in political. Economic, and medical capacities. In addition, they exercise social control over the community. Initiation for men lasts for seven years and ends with a symbolic death and rebirth to teach them that bodily death does not mean suffering and finality; rather it means union with God. The Kore teaches self-knowledge and the doctrine that they undergo endless reincarnations. Without the help of the Kore. Every time he returns to Earth, God removes from the reincarnated person a portion of his spiritual nature and keeps it in Heaven. Therefore, if uninitiated, after a certain number of reincarnations, the deity will become completely reabsorbed. To avoid this, the Kore society seeks to achieve the assimilation ... morewith God to ensure countless reincarnations. This entails enduring the intensive training period into one of the eight classes of the Kore. This fine example has a hairstyle displaying two chignons with a long plait on each side of the face. During these ceremonies. Youths are taught masculine virtues through chanting and the symbolic use of animal masks. Many animals are represented, among them the antelope, hyena, lion and monkey, each with their own positive attributes. The diverse range of styles, from realistic to wildly abstract, have made Bamana kore masks extremely popular with collectors. The genesis of the Bamana as a definable culture can be traced back to the 17th century, though archaeological evidence hints that they could be much older. They are of Mandinke origin and today are the largest culture in Mali. The zenith of Bamana culture occured during the late 18th century during the reign of N'golo Diara, who conquered the Peul tribe and occupied the important cities of Timbuktu and Djenne. They remained powerful until conquered by the French in 1892. Recently, like many African cultures, they have been affected by Islamic settlers from the east. Though the Bamana still consider themselves animists, many villagers now practice a hybrid brand of both traditional and Islamic religions. This has allowed these competing cultures to coexist peacefully. Recommended Reading: Jean

The Bamana(also called Bambara) are among the largest ethnic groups in the Western Sudan style region. Because traditional life revolves around agriculture. Issues concerning the cycles of nature and the productivity of farmers inform Bamana society and art. Knowledge of agriculture practices is transmitted from generation to generation through the Ci-wara(or Chiwara, Tyi Wara) society. The purpose of the Chi-wara society is to pay homage to successful farmers. Their rituals recall the legend of the mythic animal that could be(according to different regions) a roan antelope(Hippotragus Leucophaeus) or anteater, a pangolin(Manis temmincki) and a python or a mythic half man, half-animal creature called Ci-wara. Who introduced agriculture to men. The Bamana people honor successful farmers through performances involving the appearances of the antelope masks like this carved wood crest mask. Ci-wara crest masks are worn at agricultural contests. Entertainment and at the annual celebration. In both cultures, equestrian figures reflect the prestige and power surrounding an animal that has been associated with royalty since horses were introduced to West Africa more than a thousand years ago. Dogon equestrian figures are most often identified as images of the HOGON, since in Dogon society horses are a luxury generally reserved for rich an powerful people. Horses appear in Dogon mythology about the creation of the world, and the horse has been interpreted as a blacksmith who represents NOMMO, or other mythological beings. According to DOGON CLIFF DWELLERS, by Imperato(which I am selling on eBay) the horse was the first animal to leave the ark, in Dogon mythology, and symbolize chieftainship, power, and wealth. Original material tufts Dimensions cm: 86 tall x 30 wide This is a beautiful example of a traditional style male Chi Wara. It was collected in Mali in 1971 by a German collector. It has very good wear patina especially where it would have been held on to the head and on the horns where it would be picked up. Tji Wara Chi Wara The tji wara society members use a headdress representing. In the form of an antelope, the mythical being who taughtmen how to farm. The word tji means“work” and wara means“animal, thus“working animal. There are antelopes withvertical or horizontal direction of the horns. In the past the purpose of the tji wara association was ... moreto encourage cooperation among all members of the community to ensure a successful crop. In recent time, however, the Bamana concept of tji wara has become associated with the notion of good farmer, and the tji wara masqueraders are regardedas a farming beast. The Bambara sponsor farming contests where the tji wara masqueraders perform. Always performing together in a male and female pair, the coupling of the antelope masqueraders speaks of fertility and agricultural abundance. According to one interpretation. The male antelope represents the sun and the female the earth. The antelope imagery of the carved headdress was inspired by a Bamana myth that recounts the story of a mythical beast(half antelope andhalf human) who introduced agriculture to the Bamana people. The dance performed by the masqueraders mimes the movements of the antelope. Antelope headdress in the vertical style, found in eastern Bamana territory, have a pair of upright horns. The male antelopes are decorated with a mane consisting of rows of openwork zigzag patterns and gracefully curved horns, while the female antelope supports baby antelopes on their back and have straight horns. The Bamana have made a significant contribution to the popularity of African art.The genesis of the Bamana as a definable culture can be traced back to the 17th century. Though archaeological evidence hints that they could be much older. They are of Mandinke origin and today are the largest culture in Mali. The zenith of Bamana culture occurred during the late 18th century during the reign of N'golo Diara, who conquered the Peul tribe and occupied the important cities of Timbuktu and Djenne. They remained powerful until conquered by the French in 1892. Recently, like many African cultures, they have been affected by Islamic settlers from the east. Though they continue to consider themselves animists, many Bamana villages now practice a hybrid combination of both"religions. This has allowed these competing cultures to coexist peacefully. 68817* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers! Africa Direct. This interesting mask is a composite of an antelope(see the elegant horns) and human elements from the figure on the forehead. The artistic diversity of the ... moreBamana is without doubt one of the most astounding. These stunning, zoomorphic headdresses, danced during the planting of crops, employ the carved head and horns of antelopes, as well as zigzag-zag, open-work designs, reportedly representing the path of the sun. A basketry, cap-like structure is attached to the bottom so that it can be worn. Other recognizable masks are not as well understood, and their use reflects the mind-boggling complexity of the predominantly animist Bamana religion. Among these are the animal-form masks such as this, often quite abstract, used in the"kono" and"kore" societies. One will see horses, hyenas, bush antelopes, and other animals depicted in these fascinating masks. Some masks are more naturalistic, though

There is a long tradition of figurative ... moreiron. Bronze and brass casting in the Western Sudan reaching back to the period of the great Empire of Mali as early as the 12 th century. The age of this interestingly cast iron mask is undetermined but it does reflect an earlier period of bronze or brass casting. The facial features on this mask are similar to those found on wood sculptures from the Bamana. These masks are forged by blacksmiths working them into shapes that could be worn. Simply carried, or kept in a ritual location. Today there is no active tradition of these masks being used. In fact as little is known about forged iron masks among the Bamana or Dogon or Senufo or any of the Western Sudanic groups it would be conjecture to assert more than this at this time. This mask does indicate the skill of the blacksmith in forging a mask out of iron. A medium much more difficult to work than wood. 72619* All content. This textile is a prestige cloth of handspun with stripwoven cotton. This cloth is assembled by sewing several strips together. Such textiles are made by men. The artist who made this particular cloth is ... morenot known. But its simplicity in the design and irs omplexity in decoration may be an indicator that this cloth was produced by the Bamana of Mali. Peoples in West Africa including the Mende. Dogon, and Senufo are also known as master-weavers in the production of such textiles. Such textiles were used as prestige clothes worn by the hunters. Collectors love this kind of textiles since they almost always have a fascinating array of protective and"good-luck" amulets attached to their surface. Ours is no exception. As we find cowrie shells, metal bells and multiple small fetish packets, filled with unknown materials, to ensure a successful hunt. The artistic diversity of the Bamana is without doubt one of the most astounding, and confounding, of all West African groups. Like their western neighbors the Dogon, complex religious, funerary, initiation, and agricultural rites have resulted in an enormous pantheon of ritual objects.
