The wood on the other side has worn and the earrings have been lost. There are intricate carvings or marks on either side of the figure and a rope in the back. I think this headdress was carved to represent the mythical figure of Ci Wara in a ceremonial dance. The figure is 16.5” tall. The separate wooden base is approximately 5.75”. There is wear, especially on the horns. I purchased this at an antique auction of an Akron Drs. Collection. I think it dates from the early 20th. century.

BAMANA KORE SOCIETY MASK- MALI The Kore is the last of the six initiation societies. These societies are run by a few elders and act in political. Economic, ... moreand medical capacities. In addition, they exercise social control over the community. Initiation for men lasts for seven years and ends with a symbolic death and rebirth to teach them that bodily death does not mean suffering and finality; rather it means union with God. The Kore teaches self-knowledge and the doctrine that they undergo endless reincarnations. Without the help of the Kore. Every time he returns to Earth, God removes from the reincarnated person a portion of his spiritual nature and keeps it in Heaven. Therefore, if uninitiated, after a certain number of reincarnations, the deity will become completely reabsorbed. To avoid this, the Kore society seeks to achieve the assimilation with God to ensure countless reincarnations. This entails enduring the intensive training period into one of the eight classes of the Kore. This fine example has a hairstyle displaying two chignons with a long plait on each side of the face. It measures 13 inches long and 8 inches wide. RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Feog4d71f%2B0a7%3E-140f47d5a4f-0xfe-

They are of Mandinke origin and today are the largest culture in Mali. The zenith of Bamana culture occurred during the late 18th century during the reign of N'golo Diara, who conquered the Peul tribe and occupied the important cities of Timbuktu and Djenne. They remained powerful until conquered by the French in 1892. Recently, like many African cultures, they have been affected by Islamic settlers from the east. Also called Bamana, form the largest ethnic group within Mali and occupy the central part of the country, in an area of savannah. They live principally from agriculture, with some subsidiary cattle rearing in the northern part of their territory. The Bambara people are predominantly animists, although recently the Muslim faith has been spreading among them. The Bambara kingdom was founded in the 17th century and reached its pinnacle between 176o, and 1787 during the reign of N'golo Diarra. N'golo Diarra is credited with conquering the Peul people and in turn claimed the cities of Dienne and Timbuktu. However, during the 19th century, the kingdom began to decline and ultimately fell to the French when they arrived in 1892. For the most part, Bambara society is structured around six male societies, known as the Dyow. The stylistic variations in Bambara art are extreme sculptures, masks and headdresses display either stylized or realistic features, and either weathered or encrusted patinas. Until quite recently, the function of Bambara pieces was shrouded in mystery, but in the last twenty years field studies have revealed that certain

African Mali Bamana Boli Boliw Figure Sculpture Power Object Midcentury Modern
Description: For sale in this listing is a magnificent and original Bamana people of Mali. Africa"BOLI" bull) figure. Abstract zoomorphic quadruped form, with striking stylized simplicity and mass. Age is hard to determine in these figures, but it is most certainly an authentic figure with considerable age. Boli were"power objects" closed associated with the ritual life of male initiation associations in Bamana culture. Boli were revered and sacred objects that embodied the collective power, knowledge, and virtues of the village. They were hidden in shrines from public view, and from the uninitiated, except on highly consequential ritual occasions. Even then, they could only be safely handled by association members of the highest ranks. Rare and prime examples of Boli, such as this one, have been gathered by curators in ... morethe West and respectfully displayed in prominent African art exhibitions and related art auctions(e.g. Southeby's, New York) in the recent past. Please contact me via Ebay messaging with any questions prior to purchasing the item-I will be pleased to answer such inquiries to the very best of my ability. Composition: Boli are not carved. But rather"built-up" over time. They changed size and character over their years in the associations as their initial forms were added to with successive layers of new materials in the ritual process. The internal framework was normally wooden, and the built up composition included diverse ritual materials such as wood chips, clay, chewed kola nuts, sacrificial blood, bone, urine, beer, honey, bark and other substances. Very large Boli such as this one suggest considerable age and routine incorporation in ritual activities. Dimensions: This Boli is extremely large in size relative to other examples that I have found in archival material from exhibits and auctions. In fact. It is the largest Boli I have been able to research, measuring 30 inches long, and 23 inches tall. There may be larger Boli that I am unfamiliar with, of course,
*** A BEAUTIFUL BAMANA CHI WARA HEADDRESS -TRULY MUSEUM QUALITY- PROVENANCE ***
A BEAUTIFUL BAMANA CHI WARA HEADDRESS- EX. B ORIS MIRSKI GALLE RY(1898-1974) Country: Mali Description: A rare and masterfully carved early example with attached basketry headdress. Animal fur and exhibiting a beautiful patina. A museum worthy piece from an important early American collector and dealer. The Bamana are traditionally an agricultural people who reside primarily in the country of Mali and the northern part of Côte D’Ivoire. The Bamana have developed six social societies that are responsible for continuing traditional education. Initiation and rites of passage, social roles, spiritual protection, and the proper practice of agriculture within their communities. Among the best-known of these societies is the agricultural society known as the Chi Wara association. The words“Chi Wara” translate to“work” and“wild animal. According ... moreto Bamana legend. The Chi Wara are primordial creatures that were half-human and half-antelope, who showed humans how to cultivate the earth; the creature used its hooves to dig into the earth like a hoe, to soften the ground and to create furrows for planting. The Bamana followed the Chi Wara’s instructions and grew crops, but their crops were so bountiful that they became wasteful and squandered their bounty. The Chi Wara became disappointed with humans and buried themselves in the earth. The Chi Wara association is therefore closely related to agricultural fertility. In creating this society. The Bamana realized their mistakes and pledged to change their ways. They also began making Chi Wara headdresses and holding masquerades to honor the mythical Chi Wara ancestors and to encourage cooperation among all members of the community to ensure a successful harvest. BAMANA CHIWARA FIGURE #2552 - Mali - For African Art Gallery
Item Number: 2552 Chi wara/ Tyiwara Headdress Tribe: Bamana/ Bambara Country: Mali Material: Wood. Metal. Size: 19" 48.3 cm) long x 20.5" 52.1 cm) Tall Condition: Good. Tip of one horn has an old break. The term tyiwara or Chi wara(westernized form) denotes a cult. Divine power and a farming association at one and the same time. The cult reveals the presence of a healing power, supervising farming activities, which appears in the form of a pair of masked dancers. The festivities celebrate the manifestation in the world of men of the mythical animal which taught them how to farm. This animal does not correspond to any known species of nature' but rather is a composite creature made up of the features of several species that include various antelopes, anteaters, pangolin, guinea fowl and chameleons. Tyi means"work" More ... morespecifically agricultural labor. Wara means"wild animal" Implying fierceness and the presence of claws. The expression tyiwara as a whole covers a number of meanings. It can be the name given to a power to which sons of praise and prayers are addressed. But it can also be a generic name for all agrarian cults supported by a youth association. An object well known to collectors of African Art. Is an elegant wooden crest carved with animal features and normally attached to a textile or rattan headdress. The dancer often wears a black raffia cape that covers him from head to foot, and a red textile cagoule decorated with cowrie shells is sometimes used to extend the headdress. Rare Bamana Animal Pupet with Brass Sheeting,Mali
Sogo bo. The puppet masquerade drama of the Bamana. Is an exploration of the moral universe. The largest group of masquerade characters and the oldest performed in the theater are bush animals. In Bamana communities, the bush is defined as the domain of men and the interpretation of the theater's bush animal characters are informed by beliefs and values associated with hunting and with hunters as men of action and society's heros. Over the last decades, at the same time that the actual area of uncultivated land has constricted and the number of hunters have diminished, the definition of the bush and the nature of the hunter/hero have been extended to other arenas of endeavor. In the Sogo bo theater. Bush animal masquerades remain important precisely because they are richly drawn and complex metaphors through which to explore the nature ... moreof knowledge and power[and] the relationship of the individual to the group. Additional Information: ... moreBamana door locks were composed of two parts: one was a fixed vertical element which was most often carved with human or animal figures fixed to the door with iron staples. The second part of the door lock was a horizontal wooden piece that slides through the vertical piece where iron teeth would fall into small holes locking the door. The doors had pointed corners that served as hinges and a sculpted wooden lock to keep it closed. A small key would lift the iron pegs to open the door. And on this example the vertical element is a stylized standing figure with raised arms. The sliding locking bar passed just behind the trunk. The figure is a representation of an ancestor which presence is required to ensure protection and prevent the intrusion of bad spirits and sorcerers. As part of annual celebrations that take place when the first rains of the year occur figures such as this would be taken from their shrine house to the center of the village where they would be ritually cleansed and decorated with beads. These events were directed to assure the fertility of women and crops and to acknowledge the ancestors. 79596* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 200

African Male Chi Wara Antelope Wood and Metal Headdress Bamana Mali
Among the Bamana. Oral traditions credit a mythical being named Chi Wara, a divine being half mortal and half animal, with the introduction of agriculture to the Bamana. Bamana society is primarily an agricultural one; even today the majority of Bamana peoples are subsistence farmers. These headdresses, also called chi wara. Are carved to honor that original mythical being. Under Chi Wara's guidance, humans first learned to cultivate the land and became prosperous and able farmers. When humans gradually became careless and wasteful, however, Chi Wara is said to have buried himself in the earth. To honor Chi Wara's memory, the Bamana created a boli. A power object in which his spirit could reside, and carved headdresses such as these to represent him. Chi wara headdresses combine antelope features with those of other animals that are ... moresignificant within Bamana culture. Such as the earth-digging aardvark or the armored pangolin. The animals are observed in nature to excel in actions that are also critical to the success of the farming effort and, therefore, Bamana life. The elegant and tapered heads of the sculptures, along with the neck, ears, and horns, are modeled on antelope forms. The lower part of the sculpture refers to the aardvark. These headdresses are also characterized by decoration with pierced openwork designs, which create an interplay between positive and negative space, and finely incised geometric patterns, which add to their texture. Chi wara performances encourage Bamana farmers as they work in the fields and praise their efforts after they have returned to the village when the work is complete. The performances always feature a pair of headdresses. One male and one female, worn by two skilled young male dancers. The male and female chi wara serve as multifaceted metaphors for the elemental forces upon which all humanity depends. from museum of African Art History) This is a very cool piece of African history. Stands 21" tall. A bit wobbly and 7" wide. Does have a few scratches

BAMANA CHIWARA / TJI WARA #2579 - Mali - For African Art Gallery
Item Number: 2579 Chi wara/ Tyiwara Headdress Tribe: Bamana/ Bambara Country: Mali Material: Wood. Metal. Size: 21.25" 554 cm) Tall Condition: Good The term tyiwara or Chi wara(westernized form) denotes a cult. Tyi means"work" More specifically agricultural labor. Wara means"wild animal" ... moreImplying fierceness and the presence of claws. Two young officiants have the job of sprinkling water over the fibers, suggesting in a highly effective manner the driving rain. a Very Fine Bamana Jo Female sculpture, African Art
Rare carved wooden female ancestor sculpture from the Bamana of Mali. Africa. Classic form and wonderful style. Professionally Custom mounted to wooden base. Measures 41 1/2 inches tall on base. Buyer to pay for an 17 lb shipping weight. Known as nyeleni among the Bamana people of Mali. The figures are an idealization of youthful feminine beauty. The term nyeleni is derived from a traditional Bamana girl's name and has multiple interpretations, including"pretty little one" or"little ornament. Nyeleni figures emphasize a number of distinctive characteristics—most notably, a rather geometrically derived form. They have prominent conical breasts that project sharply from a flattened chest and are counterbalanced by exaggerated buttocks that jut out behind the figure. The arms, legs, and torsos are highly cylindrical. Hairstyles ... morevary but usually exhibit some variation on a crestlike arrangement—this figure's coiffure consists of three horizontal crests. Young unmarried Bamana men use nyeleni sculpture to represent the ideal marriageable woman they hope to find as a wife and partner. Historically, initiation societies were at the core of Bamana religious, political, and social life. In those southern Bamana communities in which the Jo society was active, all young Bamana men were required to become members. The preparation for the initiation ceremonies, which took place every seven years, required many years of study and work. The training culminated in jofaga, killing[in] Jo, in which the candidates are symbolically reborn as a member invested with a new adult status. The new initiate then spent the next few months traveling to neighboring communities, spending two to three nights in a village while dancing and singing to display his knowledge of Jo and to earn gifts of money, cotton, or food. The initiate used these figures to enhance such performances and allude to his eligibility as an adult male seeking a spouse.

Exquisite African Art- Old Large Bamana Male Chi Wara Tji Wara headdress Mask Bamana Male Chi Wara Tji Wara headdress Mask Tribe: Bamana Origin: Mali Approx Age: Early to Mid 20C Materials: Wood. Original material tufts Dimensions cm: 86 tall x 30 wide This is a beautiful example of a traditional style male Chi Wara. It was collected in Mali in 1971 by a German collector. It has very good wear patina especially where it would have been held on to the head and on the horns where it would be picked up. Tji Wara Chi Wara The tji wara society members use a headdress representing. In the form of an antelope, the mythical being who taughtmen how to farm. The word tji means“work” and wara means“animal, thus“working animal. There are antelopes withvertical or horizontal direction of the horns. In the past the purpose of the tji wara association was ... moreto encourage cooperation among all members of the community to ensure a successful crop. In recent time, however, the Bamana concept of tji wara has become associated with the notion of good farmer, and the tji wara masqueraders are regardedas a farming beast. The Bambara sponsor farming contests where the tji wara masqueraders perform. Always performing together in a male and female pair, the coupling of the antelope masqueraders speaks of fertility and agricultural abundance. According to one interpretation. The male antelope represents the sun and the female the earth. The antelope imagery of the carved headdress was inspired by a Bamana myth that recounts the story of a mythical beast(half antelope andhalf human) who introduced agriculture to the Bamana people. The dance performed by the masqueraders mimes the movements of the antelope. Antelope headdress in the vertical style, found in eastern Bamana territory, have a pair of upright horns. The male antelopes are decorated with a mane consisting of rows of openwork zigzag patterns and gracefully curved horns, while the female antelope supports baby antelopes on their back and have straight horns. The doors had pointed corners that served as hinges and a sculpted wooden lock to keep it closed. A small key would lift the iron pegs to open the door. The sliding locking bar passed just behind the vertical part. The face on this door lock is carved in a Bamana style and recalls Bamana figures identified as representations of an ancestor, which presence is required to ensure protection and prevent the intrusion of bad spirits and sorcerers. Bamana Ntomo mask, Estate Purchase
A very sensitively-carved Bamana Ntomo mask from Mali. Ntomo masks are associated with the initiation of Bamana boys into manhood. According to some accounts. Ntomo masks with odd numbers of comb teeth are male, and those with even numbers are female, making this one a male mask. This one is old, with signs of considerable handling and surface encrustation, including a few cowrie shells and red abrus seeds. Like many earlier examples, this mask conveys a great deal of expressive force- capturing the feeling of awe boys experience as they undergo their initiation into manhood- with a bare minimum of sculptural elements. Though the facial features are highly stylized, they are not schematic, as they have become on later versions of the form. This mask is made from very heavy, dense wood, and appears to have been converted into a rod puppet(see ... morephotos showing holes through the chin and top of the mask) after the holes around the edges broke off. I purchased the piece from a Louisville-area estate sale picker. This mask measures 19 inches tall, 5 1/2 inches across, and 3 1/2 inches deep. The stand is for photography only and is not included in the sale. About Me and My Selling Philosophy I have been collecting African art for more than a decade. Over the years. My collection has gotten too large for the available space, and I’ve discovered I get more pleasure selling things to others who appreciate them than keeping a growing pile of interesting stuff in the basement. My inventory is carefully selected from the offerings of generalist antique dealers. Fellow collectors, estate re-sellers and“pickers” in the United States and Britain. Aside from a few rare exceptions(well-made contemporary masquerades. Signed works of modern art, etc. I do not buy pieces recently arrived from Africa, since my primary interest is in wooden masks and figures from the colonial period(1880-1960 or so) I understand the value of provenance to collectors in this field. And therefore always seek to provide as much information as p

The artistic diversity of the Bamana is without doubt one of the most astounding. And confounding, of all West African groups. It is interesting that perhaps their closest rivals in complexity are their neighbors to the north and east, the Dogon, with whom they share certain stylistic similarities. Complex religious, funerary, initiation, and agricultural rites have resulted in an enormous pantheon of ritual objects. When collectors think of Bamana, the image of a"chi wara" often leaps to mind. These stunning, zoomorphic headdresses, danced during the planting of crops, employ the carved head and horns of antelopes, as well as zig-zag, open-work designs, reportedly representing the path of the sun. A basketry, cap-like structure is attached to the bottom so that it can be worn. Other recognizable masks are not as well understood, and their use reflects the mind-boggling complexity of the predominantly animist Bamana religion. Among these are the animal-form masks such as this, often quite abstract, used in the"kono" and"kore" societie

The process of producing these textiles is very long and involves both men and women. The cloth is handspun and handwoven by men who use local cotton and small strip looms. The strips produced are sewn together to make a large cloth. Almost ten strips are needed in order to get a normal wrapper size cloth. Each strip is around 5 to 6 inches wide. In traditional practice. The sewer joins the strips using needle and thread, and in more recent times the artist works with a hand-operated sewing machine. The finished cloth is then washed off and dried in the sun. The dried cloth is soaked in a mixture of pounded leaves from local trees. Once dried. The cloth is ready to receive the mud dye and its decorations. Traditionally, women were in charge of decorating the cloth. Today both men and women can decorate a cloth. With a small bamboo or metal spatula, the artist draws the designs on the dried cloth using a pre-mixed mud dye. After that the cloth is washed to remove any excess mud from the design process. Each design is outlined one more time. The artist repeats this process to get a better result. Local ble

Size: 27.25" 69.2 cm) Long Condition: Good Note: Both tails were broken and repaired at some point. Good repairs done. This animal does not correspond to any known species of nature' but rather is a composite creature made up of the features of several species that include various antelopes, anteaters, pangolin, guinea fowl and chameleons. ... moreTyi means"work" More specifically agricultural labor. Two young officiants have the job of sprinkling water over the fibers, suggesting in a highly effective manner the driving rain.
