This idealization of beauty is reflected in body markings as well as her stylized coiffure and sometimes jewelry and clothing attached to the figure to enhance their attractiveness. The artistic diversity of the Bamana is without doubt one of the most astounding. And confounding, of all West African groups. It is interesting that perhaps their closest rivals in complexity are their neighbors to the north and east, the Dogon, with whom they share certain stylistic similarities. Complex religious, funerary, initiation, and agricultural rites have resulted in an enormous pantheon of ritual objects. When collectors think of Bamana, the image of a"chi wara" often leaps to mind. These stunning, zoomorphic headdresses, danced during the planting of crops, employ the carved head and horns of antelopes, as well as zig-zag, open-work designs, reportedly representing the path of the sun. Vintage Bamana, Malinke Ntomo Mask/Mali/Stamped Aluminum on Wood/25" H
Vintage Bamara(Bambara) Malinke mask, hammered and stamped aluminum on wood; 25" H. It has a very wonderful, interesting"mechanical" and contemporary look to it I think. I was told that this is a Malinke mask and research shows that Malinke is a term used for Islamic Bamana speakers in Mali. The people however continue to retain traditional initiation societies responsible for training boys to fulfill their adult roles. Masking performances and other techniques are used to instill self-awareness. Discipline, and sacred knowledge in young men. This style horned mask would be for the earliest Ntomo level of the society. The aluminum overlay, instead of brass, dates from the 1930's with the advent of airplanes. BAMANA DOOR LOCK - MALI Konbalabala or Konbarabara
BAMANA DOORLOCK– MALI(Konbalabala or K onbarabara) This beautiful. Old doorlock was used to protect a house. It is an abstract representation of an ancestor. This Bamana lock is larger and more figurative than those of their Dogon neighbors. This doorlock still has its original crossbolt. Locks such as these were affixed with large iron staples through holes to house doors. Which were usually plain. Placing an image of an ancestor on the doorlock offered additional protection by making the door sacrosanct. The form of and motifs employed in Bamana door locks usually are invested with symbolic messages despite their formal simplicity. These messages. Both in abstract and representational imagery. Can be deeply personal. The stylized figure is usually a representation of an ancestor whose presence is required to ensure protection from bad spirits ... moreor sorcery. In the form of a stylized human figure. The rectangular body is surmounted by an abstract face and a pair of upturned horns at top. It is sometimes told that the big ears also represent the jaws of a crocodile to enhance the power of the ancestors. A human animal representation on the doorlock give the house ancestor protection and the animal representation gives the ancestor the strengths of the animal and offers so an additional protection. Like the majority of the Bamana figures. Doorlocks were traditionally sculpted by the blacksmiths who belong to a caste of the highest rank. They are at the same time masters of fire and of wood, who carve the majority of wooden objects used by their people. Each lock is given a name in accordance with its message, person, myth, or any anecdotal reference. This fine example will be shipped on its custom Plexiglas and metal stand. The doorlock measures 17“ tall and 17“ wide. RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Feog4d72f%2Bf7%60%3E-144d66723e5-0x115-

Suruku mask is worn by adult Bamana males during the initiation of young men into adult status. All Bamana males advance through various levels of initiation and secret knowledge and the Kore mask appears for only the most senior of men representing their personal struggle to achieve knowledge and wisdom. The symbolism of this mask identifies it as a suruku mask of the Kore society. Suruku masks are seen as a combination of human and hyena features. Hyenas are thought by the Bamana to represent foolish behavior reflecting an uninformed view of the world. Very much like the young male initiates. Carved in secret by the by the blacksmith the mask was made from a single piece of wood and reflects the skill of the Bamana sculptor. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. She is identified as a"Jonyeleni" a member of the Jo society, a woman's and men's initiation society among the Bamana. Young women will carry figures such as this from village to village indicating that they are no longer children but mature women ready and available for marriage. This takes place on a seven year cycle of initiation of boys and girls into this level of Jo Society membership. The sculptures carried by the young women serve as paradigms of beauty and well being reflecting the physical attributes of ideal beauty that the Jonyeleni reflects to others. This idealization of beauty is reflected in the scarification and body markings as well as her stylized coiffure and the jewelry and clothing attached to the figure to enhance their attractiveness. This well carved figure also characterizes the essence of womanhood and of social cohesion that results from the order and structure of the Jo woman's society. The Jonyeleni figure represents the aesthetic ideal of youthful beauty allied to the characterization of an ideal society of order and structure. For wonderful examples and more information.
