Read more about the culture behind these masks by visiting the website Zyama(dot com) An excerpt from this site appears below. This seller is not affiliated ... morewith the operator of the Zyama site. The Bambara numbering 2.500.000 million form the largest ethnic group within Mali. The triangle of the Bambara region, divided in two parts by the Niger River, constitutes the greater part of the western and southern Mali of today. The dry savanna permits no more than a subsistence economy, and the soil produces, with some difficulty, corn, millet, sorghum, rice, and beans. Their traditions include six male societies, each with its own type of mask. Initiation for men lasts for seven years and ends with their symbolic death and their rebirth. Nearly every Bambara man had to pass through these societies in succession, until, upon reaching the highest rank, he had acquired a comprehensive knowledge of ancestral traditions. The jo society has become a sort of framework for other initiation society. Until a few decades ago. Initiation was obligatory for every young man. Jo initiations take place every seven years, after candidates receive six years of special training. During this time, the young men go through a ritual death and live one week in the bush before returning to the village. There they publicly perform the dances and songsthey have learned in the bush, and receive small presents from spectators. After a ritual bath that signals the end of their animal life, the new initiates become“Jo children. Initially the ntomo was a society for uncircumcised boys. Today it closely resembles various Western associations in its bureaucratic structure and its administrative and membership fees. There are two main style groups of their masks. One is characterized by an oval face with four to ten horns in a row on top like a comb. Often covered with cowries or dried red berries. The other type has a ridged nose, a protruding mouth, a superstructure of vertical horns, in the middle of which or in front of which is a standing fi

The harmony of a Bamana village, and the solution to problems, depends upon a number of so-called"secret" societies. Similar in metaphysical complexity to the beliefs of their neighbors, the Dogon, the inner workings of these societies are almost impossible to explain or to comprehend unless, of course, you are a Bamana or Dogon. These societies use beautiful, elusive emotions, sensations, and truths, never meant for words. The genesis of the Bamana as a definable culture can be traced back to the 17th century. Though archaeological evidence hints that they could be much older. They are of Mandinke origin and today are the largest culture in Mali. The zenith of Bamana culture occured during the late 18th century during the reign of N'golo Diara, who conquered the Peul tribe and occupied the important cities of Timbuktu and Djenne. They remained powerful until conquered by the French in 1892. Recently, like many African cultures, they have been affected by Islamic settlers from the east. Though they still consider themselves animists, many villagers now practice a hybrid combination of

Additional Information: This fine warrior or hunter's ... moretunic decorated with amulets of all kind comes from the Bamana people of Mali. Such ritual tunics were also found among other Mande groups in Mali and among the Akan/Asante peoples of Ghana. Bamana hunting-related items are well-known and quite sought-after. And collectors love these pieces since they almost always have a fascinating array of protective and"good-luck" amulets attached to their surface. Our tunic is a superb example of Bamana hunter costumes on which multiple small horns and leather fetish packets filled with unknown materials or verse from the Koran, to ensure a successful hunt and protection during battles. The wilderness is regarded as both dangerous and valuable, both as a source of food and as a source of spiritual gifts. The amulets provide safety, and its contents were known only by the owner. BAMANA DOORLOCK – MALI (Konbalabala or Konbarabara )
BAMANA DOORLOCK– MALI(Konbalabala or K onbarabara) This beautiful. Old doorlock was used to protect a house. It is an abstract representation of an ancestor. This Bamana lock is larger and more figurative than those of their Dogon neighbors. This doorlock still has its original crossbolt. Locks such as these were affixed with large iron staples through holes to house doors. Which were usually plain. Placing an image of an ancestor on the doorlock offered additional protection by making the door sacrosanct. The form of and motifs employed in Bamana door locks usually are invested with symbolic messages despite their formal simplicity. These messages. Both in abstract and representational imagery. Can be deeply personal. The stylized figure is usually a representation of an ancestor whose presence is required to ensure protection from bad spirits ... moreor sorcery. In the form of a stylized human figure. The rectangular body is surmounted by an abstract face and a pair of upturned horns at top. It is sometimes told that the big ears also represent the jaws of a crocodile to enhance the power of the ancestors. A human animal representation on the doorlock give the house ancestor protection and the animal representation gives the ancestor the strengths of the animal and offers so an additional protection. Like the majority of the Bamana figures. Doorlocks were traditionally sculpted by the blacksmiths who belong to a caste of the highest rank. They are at the same time masters of fire and of wood, who carve the majority of wooden objects used by their people. Each lock is given a name in accordance with its message, person, myth, or any anecdotal reference. This fine example will be shipped on its custom Plexiglas and metal stand. The doorlock measures 17” tall and 17” wide.

She is identified as being a Jonyeleni, a member of the Jo society, a woman's and men's initiation society among the Bamana. Young women will carry sculptures such as this from village to village indicating that they are no longer children but mature women ready and available for marriage. This takes place on a seven year cycle of initiation of boys and girls into this level of Jo Society membership. The sculptures carried by the young women serve as paradigms of beauty and well being reflecting the physical attributes of ideal beauty that the Jonyeleni reflects to others. This idealization of beauty is reflected in the scarification and body markings as well as her stylized coiffure and the jewelry and clothing attached to the figure to enhance their attractiveness. Jonyeleni also characterizes the essence of womanhood and of social cohesion that results from the order and structure of the Jo woman's society. It represents the aesthetic ideal of youthful beauty allied to the characterization of an ideal society of order and structure. For wonderful examples and more information. Bambara Bamana Wooden Hand-Carved Antique Antelope Headress
Bambara Bamana Wooden Hand-Carved Antique Antelope Headress This Mask is worn by one of the six male tribes of Mali in Africa. The antelope holds great significance to the Mali people. According to one interpretation of a myth. The male antelope represents the sun and the female the earth. The antelope imagery of the carved headdress was inspired by a Bambara myth that recounts the story of a mythical beast(half antelope and half human) who introduced agriculture to the Bambara people. The dance performed by the masqueraders mimes the movements of the antelope. Antelope headdress in the vertical style, found in eastern Bambara territory, have a pair of upright horns. The male antelopes are decorated with a mane consisting of rows of openwork zigzag patterns and gracefully curved horns, while the female antelope supports baby antelopes on ... moretheir back and have straight horns. The dancers appeared holding two sticks in their hands, their leaps imitating the jumps of the antelopes. From the artistic point of view the tji wara are probably the finest examples of stylized African art. For with a delicate play of line the sensitive carvings display the natural beauty of the living antelope. This mask was purchased at an estate auction of original. Carved, wooden African Art. Please see pictures for details as one of the horns has been damaged at the tip. It was bought this way at the auction. The mask measures 36" at its longest point and 11" wide. Bamana Chiwara Female Headdress - Woman Standing on Antelope
This African hand carved Chiwara female headdress depicts a female figure standing on antelope with very high antlers. It was brought back from Africa by a business woman who traveled the world and acquired many unique items for her collection. It is in excellent condition and stands 15 1/2" tall is 7" wide and is 2 1/4" long. It is from Bamana. Mali and I estimate that it's age is somewhere between 1910 and 1940. It is a beautiful example of African Tribal Art. Bamana Chi Wara from Mali. Represent and honor the mythological half man/ half antelope hero who taught man how to cultivate the soil. They were danced in pairs and celebrate the union of male(sun) female(earth) and fibre costume(rain) signifying the cooperation needed for a successful harvest and community survival. They are worn as headdresses and danced as pairs. ... moreSpelled alternately Ci Wara, Tyi Wara, etc. they illustrate the diversity of ways to represent an unwritten pronunciation. There are three types of Chi Wara headdresses; the familiar vertical style of the eastern Bamana, the more realistic horizontal style of the northern Bamana and the varied and more abstract forms of the Southern Bamana. The Chi Wara is always danced with each wooden figure attached to a basket on the dancer's head. And the body covered in a huge pile of raffia. Often the face is obscured with raffia that has been colored or decorated, and the dancer carries a long staff. The figures are always in one or more male/female pairs, with the female usually dancing behind the male, fanning him and spreading his powers into the gathered community. The Male figures leap to represent the antelope, and then scratch the earth with their staves or horns as the Chi Wara teaches humans to cultivate crops. In some communities the Mousso Koroni figure also appears

The Bamana have made a significant contribution to the popularity of African art.The genesis of the Bamana as a definable culture can be traced back to the 17th century. Though archaeological evidence hints that they could be much older. They are of Mandinke origin and today are the largest culture in Mali. The zenith of Bamana culture occurred during the late 18th century during the reign of N'golo Diara, who conquered the Peul tribe and occupied the important cities of Timbuktu and Djenne. They remained powerful until conquered by the French in 1892. Recently, like many African cultures, they have been affected by Islamic settlers from the east. Though they continue to consider themselves animists, many Bamana villages now practice a hybrid combination of both"religions. This has allowed these competing cultures to coexist peacefully. 68817* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers! Africa Direct.
