Title, Baga Standing Male Figure D'Mba Guinea Africa, Type of Object, Sculpture. Carving Country of Origin, Guinea, People, Baga, Materials, Wood. ... moreRaffia fibers, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 25.5 inches H. x 5 inches Overall Condition, Poor. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, bad cracks in head. In arms, in base; chips and scratches, Additional Information: A rare Baga representation of a standing Male Figure D'mba named after the shoulder mask D'mba according to Frederick Lamp who conducted extensive research on the Baga art. In his book on Art of the Baga. Frederick Lamp published a male figure that morphologically resembles the offered piece. He wrote: Although the D'mba masquerade is always female, male and female D'mba figures exist, suggesting that rhe ideal that D'mba represents crosses genre lines(1996: 160. Fig. 142) The Baga people are a small West African ethnic group that lives in a coastal area of swamps and inland waterways in Guinea bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Though numbering only about 35-45.000, the Baga are well known for their art and sculpture. The term Baga identifies not only a people or an area but also equally identifies shared cultural traditions and art forms with neighboring Nalu and Landuma and the dominant Susu people. Sculpture from the Baga people along the Atlantic seaboard has been known and documented for an extended period of time as early as the middle of the nineteenth century. The traditions continue despite religious conflicts and Islamic Jihad activities that strove to eliminate sculptures from Baga culture. As “c

Width is: 10 inches(top or upper section) x 11 inches(middle) x 8 inches(base or lower section) Overall Condition, Good. Damage/Repair, age cracks in places(see pictures) Chips and scratches, pigment worn off in small places, Baga snake. Bansonyi, A-mantsho-na-tshol, SUPERB Additional Information: Wonderful design. Excellent condition. This is a Baga protective serpent, known in the literature under various names: Bansonyi, A-mantsho-na-tshol or Inap. The serpent here represented is said to be similar to the ferocious python which spirit called Ninkinanka is involved in curing infertility and droughts. Bringing prosperity, wealth, and rain. The Baga people occupy the northern coast of Guinea and the southern coast of Guinea-Bissau. They live in the marshy area flooded six months of the year, during which time the only way to get around is by a dugout canoe. They live in villages divided into two to four quarters, which are in turn divided into five or six clans. Traditionally, the village is headed by the eldest member of each clan. The men fish and grow cola nuts; the women grow rice. Spiritually, they believe in a single god, known as Kanu, assisted by a male and female spirits. The only fundamental ritual is initiation, which takes place every twenty-four years. Before burial, the dead are displayed in a sacred wood and their belongings are buried. Baga had rich traditions of multifunctional masks and sculpture, many of which were suppressed with the advent of Islam. The best known of these is the massive Nimba(or Dumba) ma

Apparently, and for the layman, the mask is an artistic and technical phenomenon which can signify, through the ubiquity of this sculpture in Black Africa, ... morea unity of artistic expression, a stage of technological advancement, a modality of cultural expression. The mask is not in reality this sculpted figure that we are accustomed to seeing, it is a character, a being who represents both a divinity and a force in human society. At the moment he wears it, his wearer is invested with the attributes recognized by this divine and social force. The Baga are a population of West Africa living on the coast and a few islands, mainly in Guinea, also in Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone. Initially rice farmers and salt producers, they were also great sculptors of masks and ritual objects, many of which.

Stunning Baga Tribe Nimba Mask - Rare version of the shoulder mask - African
BAGA NIMBA MASK From Guinea-Bissau West Africa This is a rare example of a Baga Nimba mask. Unlike the usual shoulder masks this one was made to be worn on the top of the head to enhance the height of the wearer who would be hidden by the hanging raffia during ceremonies. The colour and patina of this mask is wonderful. The overall condition is very good for its age. The Nimba or D'Mba mask represents the mother of fertility who protects the pregnant women of the village and resides over all ceremonies. Such as those of celebration, weddings and births. The dancer, wearing a full raffia costume, carries the mask on his shoulders, looking out through holes or an opening between the breasts. Some masks rise more than eight feet above the ground; and most show a standardized pattern of facial scarification. 38cm L x 18cm W x 20cm D EARLY- ... moreMID 20TH CENTURY £850 IF IT ISN'T TOO MUCH TROUBLE PLEASE PAY VIA BACS OR CASH ON DELIVERY/ COLLECTION AND NOT PAYPAL THANK YOU THE BAGA PEOPLE LIVE ALONG THE COAST AND LOWLANDS OF GUINEA BISSAU. Wooden Snake headdress (statue) from Baga tribe of Guinea Bissau
Carved and painted wooden snake headdress. Representing the spirit Basonyi, used in ceremony by the Baga people of Guinea Bissau. The common belief suggests that this serpent effigy represents the African python, which is the largest snake in Africa. However, the body form(short, thick subtriangular body and large triangular head) and color pattern design(large lateral triangles of shades of red, brown and black) clearly indicate that the carving represents the West African Gaboon viper(Bitis rhinoceros) which occurs from Guinea to Benin and grows to 6 feet in length(second in size in Africa only to the python) g6.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk%601d72f%2B%3Eg6%3E-146f2725bc2-0x105-

Nice African Serpent Baga Or Baga Snake "Bansonyi" From Southern Guinea
Here for sale is a Wonderful carved and color painted African Baga snake also called Bansonyi. According to Frederick Lamp's research( Art of the Baga. New York, 1996) The spirit Ninkinanka, of the snake called bansonyi or Mantsho-or-no-Pön. Reigned among the Baga people, who feared him. He was the spirit who could bring rain, provide wealth, and children to infertile women. Each section within a village was represented by the wooden image of a serpent, like a totemic animal. The bansonyi headcrest appeared during competitions between different clans. Young people dressed in a complex suit topped by the representation of the snake faced each other during dances that were judged by women. The snake also manifested itself during the final phase of the girls and boys initiation and at the beginning initiation ceremonies for young adults. ... moreAssociated with the rainbow. Considered the source of the rivers and a marker of the end of the rains, the snake evokes the idea of life and death, the beginning and the end. I purchased it from an local estate auction and was told it came from a person who spent several years in Africa several decades ago and brought it back when returning to USA. Now I downsize my collection and other collectors can have chance to enjoy this fabulous African art. Overall it is in very good condition except there are some minor aged scratches and cracks that did not distract the attractiveness of this wonderful primitive art. Size: 45"h Please email me if you have any question. Thank you for visiting my auction!

A serene face, a ringed neck resting on a cylindric base wrapped in a cotton cloth. This is a shrine piece known as a-Tshol and a work from the Baga people. In the past, a Baga A-Tshol sculpture was used as a shrine figure and also as a dance headdress. It was part of a family shrine. As representation of powerful spirits, A-Tshol‘s primary function is to protect the community. In rituals of divination A-Tshol helps to determine the cause of misfortune and reveals God will. A-Tshol intervenes also during the funeral of a family leader. During the harvest festivals, the oldest man in the village invokes the ancestors and presents the village offerings to the ancestors in spreading seeds on the A-Tshol. This ceremony ends with a big family dinner. A-tshol sculpture was also used in the healing rituals. See “Art of the Baga” by Frederick Lamp for more information and examples. The Baga people are a small West African ethnic group living in a coastal area of swamps and inland waterways in Guinea bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Though numbering only about 35-45.000, the Baga are well known for their art and sculpture. The term Baga identifies not only a people or an area but also equally identifies shared cultural traditions and art forms with neighboring Nalu and Landuma and the dominant Susu people. This standing female figure could have been used during ceremonies of a ritual organization primarily for women known as Menda. Guinea and Guinea-Bissau OLD Today. The Baga people, 60,000 in total, occupy the northern coast of Guinea and the southern coast of Guinea-Bissau. Spiritually, they believe in a single god, known as Kanu. Assisted by a male and female spirits. The only fundamental ritual is initiation, which takes place every twenty-four years. Before burial, the dead are displayed in a sacred wood and their belongings are buried. Baga had rich traditions of multifunctional masks and sculpture. Many of ... morewhich were suppressed with the advent of Islam. The best known of these is the massive Nimba( or Dumba) mask. With its great cantilevered large nose, a large pair of breasts, crested head supported on the upper part of a female torso. Carved so as to rest on the shoulders of the wearer, his body hidden in raffia fiber. The mask can also stand on four legs. Sterile women in the Simo secret society invoked it as the Mother of Fertility, and it was used at the first-fruit(rice) rituals, symbolically associating female fertility with the increase of the grain. This mask appears at the harvest and threshing of the rice crop, is worn by dancers at birth, marriages and other joyful ceremonies. This mask represented the very essence of Baga dignity and culture. The Simo society utilized very large polychrome masks(often more than 5 feet tall) known as banda or boke which are used in fertility rituals by this society. Played a part during the dry season, after the rice harvest, and at funerals. It has an elongated human face with the jaws of a crocodile, the horns of an antelope, the body of a serpent and the tail of a chameleon. Baga craftsmen also carve anok. A-tscol or elek. B

She has a seashell on her neck. Measurements: 16-1/2" tall x 6-3/4" wide x 6-1/4" deep Please see my other African Art listed. Combined shipping is available.
Kongo Yombe Baga Hemba Luba Yaka African Fertility Wood Figure Beads Lizard Skin
Up for sale is another great hand carved African figure. This is a great hand carved male Kongo/Yombe/Baga/Hemba/Luba/Yaka/Bayaka fertility figure. The figure sports a great blue bead necklace and some type of lizard skin making it a really cool looking figure. This piece was most definitely hand carved and is in great condition. My estimate would be that this is piece was made sometime in the mid 20th century. However I am not an expert and will let you be the judge of how old the piece is. This piece has a really cool look with the skin belt and beads and would look great in any room as a conversation starter or make an excellent addition to any collection. The figure stands approximately 11.5" tall. Please note that I am not an expert on African antiquities and would welcome additional information on this piece. This piece came from ... moreOpfer's auction in Baltimore Maryland and was part of the same collection that appeared in their March 27 and subsequent sales on Liveauctioneers(this piece was not sold during that sale. It came from one of their subsequent sales featuring items from this collection) This was from a living estate and the gentleman whose collection this and the other pieces I will be listing came from apparently worked a second job to fund his collection. Please see pictures and ask all questions prior to buying. I will be happy to supply additional pictures/information upon request. This is being sold as is. And returns are not accepted.
