The Makonde of Tanzania and Mozambique are one of the most prolific art producing peoples in eastern Africa. One of the most prominent of these arts are the life size helmet masks called Lipico which are worn on the top of the head partially covering the face and slightly tipped upward so that the dancer can see. Masks play a prominent role in Makonde life serving to mark the end of the initiation and circumcision cycle for boys as they move into manhood. The Lipico masks show a wide range of Makonde life and society as they depict initiates. Villagers, coastal Arabs and colonial officials. Makonde will sometimes embellish their masks with human hair(like on this example) or with beards; they will insert pegs for teeth, whiten the eyes and in a quest for realism often show human deformities. Most of the time such masks have a lip plug, which Makonde men used to wear. The type of wood used is locally known as njala. For several splendid examples and more information. The top vase section is bolted to the pedestal and is loose on the base but can be made to sit straight. If its not set perfectly, it will lean as shown above. BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE ROSEWOOD ASIAN CHINESE CARVED WOOD MASK WITH BONE EYES
Up for sale is a gorgeous carved Chinese rosewood mask with bone eyes. T he carving is very nicely done. It measures approximately 8.5" high and 6" across. I believe they eyes are made of bone. There are two splits in the wood. One is on the back where the mask would rest on a nail on the wall and can be seen in the fifth photo. The second is on the loop behind the head on the left right hand si de which can be seen in the sixth photo(towards the right of the photo. Antique Chinese Mask Like Root Carving
This item is a wonderful example of Chinese root carving. It is mask like with many small roots protruding from the lower face looking like a beard. This root carving measures approximately 21" by 14" inches. The mask itself is smiling reminding me of a laughing Buddha. The face has no cracks or chips to the wood. I purchased this item at an antiques show in Virginia. This item has a nice patina that shows some age. The buyer pays $16.95 for US Mail shipping. Up for auction is an amazing historical treasure. A rare fragile plaster original circa early 1800's death mask! This mask is of an unknown individual and retains the original flesh colored paint applied over the plaster. There is also a copper ring loo p which was installed when casted into the back of the piece to hang it if desired. Appropriate wear for the age while otherwi se in excellent condition. It is almost impossible to find a mask like this in one piece that was never broken in half or is not cracked as the plaster is so fragile. It i s in exception condition for a true real death mask. This could have been created anywhere from the late 1700's to 1800's. Most likely before the age of photography, putting this mask pre-1830's. It is quite an unusual and exceedingly rare work of art. Here is a late 19 th Century ANTIQUE WOOD MASK from Mexico. Possibly used at Carnival time. It is an authentic indigenous Native American hand carved wooden dance mask. It looks like a witch’s face but I'm no expert. In very good condition. The paint is intact except around the white’s of the eyes and red on the mouth. There are 3 holes for stringing. There is some cracking from age but the mask is solid. It hung on the wall in a humble house in Chiapas, Mexico for many decades, given to the family by the Grandfather, who had it most of his life. It was given to the man I bought it from in the 1980’s when he was working down in Chiapas. The family befriended this man and they gave him this mask as a going-away present. Vintage-Antique Egyptian (Genie) Wooden Carved Mask: Unusual & Special
Antique-Vintage Egyptian Genie Mask. I purchased this from a licensed artifact dealer that happened to be a personal friend of mine. This mask is very unique and unusual. It is rather special in respect to its energy! It measures approximately 10 inches long and approximately 8 inches wide(when measuring from the back side/ear tip to ear tip)It's hand carved. It has the character of its age. The right ear lobe has the typical age related slight wood crack that is about an inch long-this by no means deters from the original beauty and I have purposely never mended it with anything because I believe it is better to keep antique wooden items in their natural state. I have owned it for 20 years. About 6 years ago or longer-I had it hanging in my office& my Awake Over Night Staff told me that they saw it vibrate and well.I took it back ... morehome after that because the ladies were a bit uneasy with the energy. Antique Uganda face mask.
The mask measures 141/2" top to bottom and 101/2" and weighs 2lb. 10oz This is a very old Ugandan face mask. It appears to have been damaged several times and initial repairs were made by local tribesmen ie. right upper eye lid and left ear. A 1/2" of the right upper lip looks like it has recently chipped off. The mask has been in storage for 20+ years. During I did not find any loose pice. All of the hair is present. It has eyebrows& a mustache. It has been used and has some wear& creases from lodge use. The metal rim has some areas that has cracked/seperated a little. Antique Wooden Japanese Noh Okina Mask/Japan/Asian/Asia/Theater/Play/Statue
Up for auction is a wooden Noh mask from Japan. These masks were used in the Noh. The major form of Japanese theater, and their use dates back to the 14th century. This mask is an Okina mask, specifically Hakushiki-jo. This mask is in pristine condition without blemish and is carved entirely from wood(most that you see for sale are made from clay) The jaw is attached with strings so that it is movable. The mask itself measures 9in tall, 6in wide, and 2.5in deep(14in tall with beard) It comes from a pet-free, smoke-free home. US bidders preferred. I bought this mask over 10 years ago in Maine they were selling the contents of newscaster Walter Cronkite's summer home in Maine The mask measures Seven and three quarters long 6 inches wide and three and a half inches deep it does have a very small chip please see photos but does not detract from the beauty apparently this was part of his art collection as we all know Henry J Soulen 1888/ 1965 Was a well-known illustrator from Charleston village Pennsylvania Who was on the same level as Norman Rockwell And other famous illustrators like Andrew Wyeth. Antique Hand Carved Wooden Mexican Folk Art Dance Mask.
I found This great Mexican Folk Art Dance mask at an Estate Sale. I'm not sure exactly how old it is but the Lady who owned it was 102 years old when she passed and the family said she had the mask for as long as they remember and she refused to get rid of it. The mask has a beautiful old patina that shows a lot of age and wear. It has some chips and flaws but a lot of character. It is hand carved and painted wood. The mask is showing signs of its 50+ years of age: It has some extremely fine bore-holes from insects which abandoned their work decades ago and a small repair at the extreme top of the mask(which cannot be seen when it is hanging) Which appears to have been made close to its creation time- However none of it age-related battle-scars take away from its appearance or presence. This piece has some unique features which appear to have been incorporated during its manufacture. A second mouth is present. Etched in black and located approximately two inches above the cut-out mouth which perforates the mask surface and continues through to the reverse side. This is an absolutely stunning Makonde Mapiko Mask which we picked up during the second half of 2012 in Southern Tanzania and Northern Mozambique. It is an authentic ritual item which shows signs of considerable ritual use. And measures nearly 12 inches square or 12 inches x 12 inches. This mask is a highly collectible piece due to its authenticity. There is an age crack on the left side of the mask which looks to have been repaired 25 to 30 years ago. The mask is structurally sound. Yet well-weathered. It is between 40 and 50 years old which qualifies it as a bona fide antique. Note: This is not a reproduction. Antique Urhobo tribal ceramonial mask African primiive folk art
This mask is from my parents' extensive collection. They traveled the world in the 70's and early 80's. This beautiful antique mask measures 18 1/4" x 11 1/12" It is about 5 1/2" deep.It was purchased in South Africa in 1982. There is an old card attached which reads"Authentic ceramonial mask of the Urhobo tribe(Living in the Niger River delta. Nigeria traw was attached at the little holes on the brim to hide the bearer's face. My mother(85) remembers being told there was something about the blue dye,but she can't remember what! There is an eye crewed into the top for hanging. It has some chips, and a small crack at the top, which does not detract from its appearance. For i'ts age, it's in great condition.
