Few African artisans achieved as highly as the people of the now extinct Benin kingdom. The Benin people were denizens of Nigeria, and they brought the art of bronze(actually mostly brass) casting to a height that has likely not yet been exceeded on the continent of Africa. Upon the arrival of European missionaries and invaders, the discovery of Benin art led them to the belief that this art was stolen from the Jews or Egyptians, and could not have been produced by these people who were at that point considered subhuman. Extraordinary masks and figures had been produced using the simple lost-wax casting method, in addition to the now famous life-sized brass leopard figures, exclusively associated with the oba. These were mostly produced from Brass/Bronze using the lost wax casting method originally, and the fact that this is a wooden piece, further suggests this. The piece does demonstrate advanced age, in various minor age cracks, and wear marks. It is finely detailed, and produced from very dense wood, making it quite heavy for its size. The piece depicts a bust of a Benin Warrior in full armor with typical facial scarifications. While playing the character of a woman, the Senufo kpelie mask is a well known art form among the Senufo tribe, characterized by its various perimeter projections, and humanoid features. Their various projections and strange appearance are said to represent the inherent imperfection in humans and humanity. Although this ethnic group spans across a number of African countries, I believe this piece is from the Côte d'Ivoire(aka Ivory Coast) The mask measures approximately 13” long(sans raffia) x 6 1/4" wide. One of the projections has a minor chip on it and another has a minor crack. Having said this though, the mask is in great condition with a large amount of pigmentation still present. A mane of raffia fiber surrounds the mask, and its perimeter is decorated with cowrie shells, widely recognized in West African cultures as a sign of prosperity. The Makonde of Tanzania and Mozambique are one of the most prolific art producing peoples in eastern Africa. One of the most prominent of these arts are the life size helmet masks called Lipico which are worn on the top of the head partially covering the face and slightly tipped upward so that the dancer can see. Masks play a prominent role in Makonde life serving to mark the end of the initiation and circumcision cycle for boys as they move into manhood. The Lipico masks show a wide range of Makonde life and society as they depict initiates. Villagers, coastal Arabs and colonial officials. Makonde will embellish their masks with human hair and beards, insert pegs for teeth, will whiten the eyes and in a quest for realism often show human deformities. In some cases There will be elaborate scarification on the face. Such scarification was done as a part of initiation ceremonies, and also when a ranking member of society assumed a more important political status or social level. An interesting old wood mask. I have no idea of its origins, the old lady I bought it from at a garage sale said her husband got it from East Africa, but then again she said it may have been Tibet. I'm no expert! nor am I a dealer I just like old and interesting things. the wood is very light. There are traces of a black" resin" that at one time was on the front of the mask, there are splits to the wood on the front only, they do not go through, the back has dust dirty marks and staining, chip to the left side as seen. And to the right side where string has been tied. 26 cms x 12 or 10ins x 6ins appx if you can tell me where this comes from I will be delighted.

Antique African Songye Kifewebe Mask Male SONGYE: Ceremonial Mask Zaire During the 16th century. The Songye migrated from the Shaba area, which is now the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Having waged war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo, who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. Lovely handcrafted/ carved wooden mask from the Dan people in Africa. Prominent forehead and pointed chin. Wearing a headband design at the top of the head. Mask measures 10”L x 6”W x 2.25”H.
