The Mali Dogon produce an enormous pantheon of masks. At last count at least 80. Due to their sheer number, and the complex, secretive nature of Dogon religion, it is sometimes impossible to connect a mask with a ritual. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point, into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. Boys from the same age group(young teenagers) are taken in to the bush for 1-2 months where they undergo several rights of passage into manhood. These involve learning certain survival skills, learning about women and how to be a good husband, learning about fatherhood, and also they are circumsized. The Luvale consider men who are not cut to be dirty or unhygienic. It is said that in some very rural areas where the kumukanda is maintained in it's strictest traditional sense that if a women is to pass by the boy's'bushcamp' whilst they are undergoing kumukanda then she must be punished, even killed. To celebrate the boys' completion of the kumukanda the Makishi festival welcomes them back to the village as men. The night before men from the village take their masks to the graveyard and sleep there, allowing the spirits of their ancestors to enter them. The following evening they appear in the village with their masks. Although the other members of the community know roughly who is taking part, they don't know who is under which mask. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The church was raising money for a missionary trip to Africa so a retired Catholic Missionary donated these to help raise funds. He spent many years there and traveled all over the continent. This is an awesome hand carved antique Chinese mask carved in a really hard and heavy wood. Possibly iron wood or rose wood. The mask’s face looks like a samurai warrior, and has a stylized helmet, that comes down on the sides with Japanese dragons and tassels carvbed in wood. The eyes and teeth of the man and dragons are carved bone, and some of these are missing(one eye from each dragon and the buy, as well as some teeth) Although the dragon's and 1 of the warrior's eyes are missing, it is really a nice piece with no other damage, and the missing eyes make it look even more fearsome. I bought this knowing its rarity and craftsmanship before knowing its character, maker, or cultural use. Just recently I found a blog that supposedly is or follows a"Antique Japan Roadshow" that is a near exact copy of this masks and explains its use and origins very well. When i look at this mask i see materials(such as the war-era style matte black tape) that remind me of WWII era materials. I strongly assume the mask is from the early to mid 1940s. Japanese Noh theater features a wide range of masks which are used to depict everything from a range of human countenances to divine and supernatural personas. One of the most subtle and interesting mask types are those which are used to show the character and image of an elderly man. The old man mask offered here is of a type called shiwa jyou which is characterized by heavy wrinkles( shiwa means wrinkle) across the brow. Cheeks and lower face. Jaw on mine is intact with tight strips of what appears to be a fine-grade natural leather. Beautiful. Natural oxidation on the mask. Kwakiutl Chief mask. British Columbia, ca early 1900- Signed inside George Hunt. Born at Fort Rupert, British Columbia 1854& died there Sep 1933. Ethnographer, museum acquisitions collector. Most of our knowledge of traditional Kwakiutl culture is based on Hunt's rich ethnographic notes& artifact collection. Son of an English trader& a Tlingit mother, Hunt lived at Fort Rupert, a trading post& Kwakiutl settlement. Hunt married a high ranking Kwakiutl woman& achieved a prestigious position of chief in the native culture. This mask is in excellent condition w/no splits, cracks, or chips. Meso-American(Funerary/Burial) ANTIQUE Mask. Hand Carved Wood with carefully hand cut Mosaic Tiles that are inlaid or embedded onto the carved mask. The tiles appear to be: Mother-of-Pearl. Jade, Tortoise Shell. I purchased this mask from a Licensed Artifact/Antique Dealer that was also a personal friend of mine about(20 years ago) The Licensed Artifact/Antique Dealer was from Houstan, Texas. The mask is genuine and very old. It is not symmetrical so measuring around the entire mask with a cloth tape measure it measures approximately 30 inches around. Measuring from the top of the mask over the top of the face to the base of the chin it measures approximately 13.5 inches x 10.5 inches. Measuring from the back of the mask it is approximately 9.5 inches X 8 inches. I am currently down sizing my personal collection and this is a fabulous starting ... moreprice for this mask. Beautiful Antique Kete Kuba Face Mask - Congo Zaire / DRC
This is a beautiful antique Kete Kuba mask from the Western Kasai region. It shows a flat face with a large square forehead. Which shows influence from the neighboring Lele. The eyebrows, pierced eyes and triangular mouth are protruding. The bottom part of the face is covered with carved geometrical and scarification motives. The combination of a flat face with dramatic highly abstract features, as well a finesse of the carving make for a powerful mask. It also shows a nice, earthy patina on the forehead. Dimensions are 10x5.

Beautiful Antique Kumu Mask - Congo Zaire / DRC
This is a beautiful antique face mask from the Kumu in Northern DRC. The Kumu is a medium tribe spread over the central part of the Oriental province in DRC. Their sculpture is known for its highly abstract features- with only a few types of masks known. The mask here. Known as the Nsembu, is made of hard wood. It shows a flat face with a slight curve towards the forehead, square eyes, a square nose and square mouth with carved teeth. The face also shows a carved black line in a cross motive on the forehead and circling the eyes and is covered in white kaolin pigments. This is a very nicely carved, expressive mask also showing great cut and patina inside. Dimensions are 9.5x7.5.

Used during initiation or coming of age ceremonies where the young woman's spirit is believed to enter the young male. Typical Chokwe features include the slightly protruding forehead. This is a Yoruba headdress or mask for the Egungun ceremony. Yoruba religion is based in ancestor worship and the Egungun ceremony glorifies the ancestor. This mask was purchased at auction in London on Sept. 29, 1988 at Phillips sale of Tribal art, lot 183. They are portrayed with their traditional high-domed hairstyle. Diamond- shaped scarification marks on their forehead and they often have eyes that display oriental characteristics. The elaborate Punu hairstyles suggest that the wearer is wealthy as her hair has not been flattened by the need to carry goods. Description: This is a great antique Mexican or Guatemalan Folk Art Bearded Dance Mask. It is hand carved and very light weight for it's size. Hand painted in flesh tones with white and blue eyes. And covered in a head of brown hair extending into the full beard. There is a small hole on each side with a string between them. Condition: In nice condition with no damage or repairs. A fair amount of wear as expected with age. Small chips. Scratches and cracks may be present but just appear to be normal aging of old, light wood. Size: The mask is about 8.5" tall and 6" wide. It does appear that El Diablo is lacking part of his right horn and there are a few small paint cheips around nostrils, and other horn prominences- but the paint and surfaces appear old and worn and is entirely handcarved and painted- all appearing original to the mask. Likely carved from proverbial"black forest wood" German/Bavarian Slight damage to the nose(no repair done or needed) Slight crack at top of cap where nail mount is. Up for auction is a large detailed hand carved mask. The mask has a main face with a raven/crow for a beard. Additionally there are two men's faces on the top of the mask with another raven/crow separating them. This is an old unique mask that has some natural ware. Antique 1933 Nursing Cap. Mask& 1930 Bulletin Beth-El College. UCCS Collection includes two letters to alumni of Beth-El College. Dated 1989 and 1941 RARE Saved from a nurse's personal collection. This is the cap and mask worn by graduate nurses of Beth- El Nursing College(now University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, CO) in the 1930's. Included is the fascinating 1930 graduation issue of the nursing college's bulletin. Evidence of the Great Depression runs throughout the publication- asking people to borrow canning jars from the college and fill them with canned fruit to feed hospital patients and nursing students, too. Dozens of eggs are donated at Easter for the children's ward Easter Egg hunt. Cartoons and quips pepper the pages of the bulletin, providing a rare glimpse of nursing and student life in 1930. The cap ... moreis made of stiffly-starched cotton with a handsewn band of black velvet sewn on the cap's band. The mask is of thick. Soft cotton with four cotton ties. Condition: Nursing cap is in very good condition except for a stain(about 1" long) is on each side of the cap. Lower front right and left. The metal headband worn inside the band may have created this rust-colored stain. Headband is in wearable condition. The mask has been worn and kept very white, also in very good condition. Bulletin edges are worn and lightly torn(1/2" or less) and corners have been bumped. Overall a very presentable, readable and scannable copy. Thank You! ANTIQUE BAULE MASK carved slate? Portrait Ivory Coast Africa Beeswax? on back
I recognized this as a Baule face but never saw one in slate- I think it's slate. The stone is in layers. It might also be some kind of very hard dark gray clay( see close- ups of back) or else has clay added to the slate on the back? It has what looks like a think application of beeswax or( opaque dark golden wax) affixed to the back which is holding a hanging device made of thick aluminum? or some other metal. It's the color of aluminum. Some pieces on the side have broken off- please see photos. It's a very nicely done face. Almost delicate. It measures approx 3 7/8" wide x 6 1/4" long. This is a wonderful piece of history in excellent condition for its age and from what i gather is pretty rare. On the back of the rubber head piece it is stamped No. 4 IV 2 2/24 PAT NO.s 296.493@ 305,080 Stamps on the chin- T-MIC 12-2-41 LOT#434 Z 5/2/42 L-31 Inside th face mask b/n rhe eyes reads MIC SPECIAL. T. 7 SMALL Inside the eye ring reads 1941-W.H.B. III On the respirator vent it reads V WHB 1941 The the canister has paint chipped and a little rust. The top reads- Z 5/6/42 AT 8W&M LTD. The bottom reads- No. 4A 8W&M LTD 1941 U6 E VI. Overall this mask is in emmaculate condition considering its age and a couple of the varying year dates leada me to believe that it was in the field and saw some action.
