Damage/Repair, large crack in head around ears. Fairly repaired, chipped ears, scratches in places A dditional Information: A Tabwa helmet mask from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Tabwa masks are rare and little is known concerning their use and functions. The literature points out three types of masks among the Tabwa. The first category is represented by the anthropomorphic wooden helmet mask like this with headdress nicely decorated with diamond and other patterns. Scarification patterns around hairstyle line, in temples, and in cheeks. This category represents the female ancestor(Musangwe) symbolizing fertility. The name Musangwe is related to sexual promiscuity. Our mask falls into this category. During the masquerade, Musangwe is always accompanied by the male mask(Kiyunde) which constitutes the second category. This second type is a zoomorphic mask representing a buffalo. There is no precise information to confirm if these two masks perform the primordial or mythical couple. The third type of masks was discovered more recently. Masks of this category are made of glass beads stitched onto raffia cloth. The functions of these masks are not known for sure. But they all are related to either the Mbudye or the Butwa society. They are probably involved in ritual dances linked to fertility, the birth of twins and ancestor cult in the Butwa

Damage/Repair, shallow cracks. Chips, Makonde Helmet Mask Tanzania African Mask Additional Information: Helmet masks such as this are very common among the Makonde. The Makonde of Tanzania and Mozambique are one of the most prolific art producing peoples in eastern Africa. One of the most prominent of these arts are the life size helmet masks called Lipico which are worn on the top of the head partially covering the face and slightly tipped upward so that the dancer can see. Masks play a prominent role in Makonde life serving to mark the end of the initiation and circumcision cycle for boys as they move into manhood. The Lipico masks show a wide range of Makonde life and society as they depict initiates. Villagers, coastal Arabs and colonial officials. Makonde will embellish their masks with human hair and beards, insert pegs for teeth, will whiten the eyes and in a quest for realism often show human deformities. In some cases There will be elaborate scarification on the face. Such scarification was done as a part of initiation ceremonies, and also when a ranking member of society assumed a more important political status or social level. Makonde masks were worn on top of the head. Sometimes they have a lip plug. Which Makonde men used to wear. The wood is njala wood. From a Kentucky gentleman's estate. This is a Victorian treasure. A solid bronze antique wall hanging match holder. The design depicts the Notre Dame Cathedral in the background and the match holder itself depicts one of the monk masks. This is bronze. Not iron with a plating as I have seen once before. ORIGINAL patina.never cleaned. Possibly French, the only markings I find are the number 293A on the reverse. It has an excellent weight. Really a wonderful collectible piece of 19th century Victoriana. An antique left side. 1/2 side, of a mask of Head of Hanuman. It was either made purposefully to be a wall decoration or it was cut in half and made into a wall hanging decoration. However, the other right side I have up for auction does not match perfectly in design when put together. This mask came from a persons collection that lived in Japan in 1952 to 1960 and he brought it back with him to California in 1960. So, I am sure he traveled a lot in the Asian lands and bought many items. I have no reference as to the year this was made but I do know it was brought back to America in 1960. I definitely believe it is an original early mask made in the 1950's for sure and possibly a little ... morebit earlier. Beautiful Antique Songye Female Kifwebe Mask – Congo Zaire / DRC
This is a beautiful antique Songye mask from the Kifwebe society. The Songye is a tribe from the central part of DRC(Kasai and Maniema) Although medium in size. It has many subgroups and its sculpture is widely known for its often spectacular and highly expressive features, whether fetishes or the Kifwebe masks. The piece here is of the white female type coming from the southern part of the Songye territory(where Luba influence is found, including the rounder upper part of the mask) It is made of a medium hard wood and shows a long conic shape. With round forehead, horizontal slit eyes, a thin square nose and thin, cross shaped mouth. A dark strip runs from the top of the head over the nose and widens at the chin. The mask is covered in white pigments– with a brownish discoloration(which is an indication that it was kept in a smoky environment) ... moreas well as finely cut striations. This is a beautiful antique Kuba royal mask. The Kuba is a large tribe from the Kasai region in Southern DRC; it is. In fact, composed of a cluster of tribes(Bushoong, Ngeende, Shoowa, etc. which each represent a different historic subgroup and each had a representative at the court of the Kuba king. The Kuba Kingdom produced a vast array of objects- both for court and rituals. Three main types of mask are known– although great variations exist among subgroups. The piece here is known as Bwoom– a mask traditionally associated with opposition to the king's authority(and defiant in its performance) Used in initiation rites and sometimes worn by the King himself. Despite regional variations. Bwoom masks show a series of characteristics. Including the large round forehead, broad nose and naturalistic ears– together with heavy ornamental additions. ... moreIncluding beads, copper and cowry shells. This piece here actually shows extraordinary features: the forehead is circled by a series of scarification patterns and the hairdo made of the carved triangular motives typical of the Kuba. Antique Mexican Mask. Terroncillo, Guerrero
I am offering an antique mask from Terroncillo. Guerrero, Mexico. The mask is hand-carved in wood(species unknown) and painted with oil based paints. Mask has been overpainted. There is a native repair which can clearly be seen in the photographs. Glue and a nail(still present) were used for the repair. Note that it is not unusual for old masks to be found with significant repairs. Traditional fiestas, where these masks were often used are often accompanied by the generous consumption of alcohol. Intoxicated owners of the masks did not care for them as a collector might in modern times. Yet, they were often too poor to buy a new one and unable to make one. Mask dimensions are approximately 6" W. x 7"24 H. Wire hanger was already present when I acquired the mask in 2007. The writing inside of the mask was present when I acquired ... morethe mask. It is open to interpretation and reads as follows: RB MEXICO DF( I do not know what RB stands for. They may be initials. Mexico DF of course refers to Mexico City) 3/74 187P(I am assuming that 3/74 refers to March. 1974. I first thought that 187P might mean 187 pesos mexicanos, until I checked the historical exchange rates) TERRONCILLO GRO(Terroncillo. Guerrero obviously refers to where the mask comes from) Next to the writing inside of the mask appears to be the remnant of a sticker. Easily removed should you choose to do so. I am a professional mask dealer. This is one of the few masks in my collection which I did not personally buy in the field. In general I never buy from other dealers or shops and galleries because I have seen first hand the mass production of masks which have been chemically treated and purposely distressed so that they appear to be old. Dan Tribal Mask w/Cowrie Shells-Applied Cloth & Bells-Antique Côte D'Ivoire
This interesting mask was purchased somewhere in the Côte D'Ivoire in West Africa around 1955 by our father. Who was then a pilot for a major oil exploration company. The face of the mask. With typical Dan mask pouty lips and sharp nose, is carved from wood and stained dark. Around the mask, attached by thongs through holes drilled in the mask, is rolled and stuffed cloth ornamentation, representing hair, made from cast off clothing, much faded, although some colors and textures still show through. Sewn to the cloth hair additions are cowrie shells. And just to each side of the chin beard are crudely made iron jingle bells. The mask has a few little nicks here and there. No cracks, a couple of very minor flakes from the nose and lips which could be easily colored to match, but we left the mask in the condition it was found in. Antique African Tribal Hand Carved Wood Effigy Mask & Spear
ITEMS OFFERED AT A LOW"BUY IT NOW" PRICE For your consideration we are offering these two antique African tribal items recently acquired at an antique estate auction and advertised as authentic. I am not an expert on African artifacts so I can not identify what tribe these originated from. Both items have a wonderful aged patina and appear to be genuine. On left is what appears to be a hand carved African effigy mask featuring a lizard above over a likeness of a man below. It is hollowed out on the back and is made of very light wood. The mask has two age cracks in it. One at top and the other on right side. The spear has a crude double edge blade measuring 2 1/4" wide at widest point and 11 3/4" long from point to hammered sheet iron ferrule. The 29" long wood handle is decorated with five woven grass bands and one ... morered vine band. These two antique African tribal items would make great wall décor. Satisfaction guaranteed.
