The triangle of the Bambara region, divided in two parts by the Niger River, constitutes the greater part of the western and southern Mali of today. The dry savanna permits no more than a subsistence economy, and the soil produces, with some difficulty, corn, millet, sorghum, rice, and beans. Their traditions include six male societies, each with its own type of mask. Initiation for men lasts for seven years and ends with their symbolic death and their rebirth. Nearly every Bambara man had to pass through these societies in succession, until, upon reaching the highest rank, he had acquired a comprehensive knowledge of ancestral traditions. The jo society has become a sort of framework for other initiation society. Until a few decades ago. Initiation was obligatory for every young man. Jo initiations take place every seven years, after candidates receive six years of special training. Brass bells and amulets with charms wrapped in cotton cloth. This is a Dan mask known as âZakpai geâ(or Zakpei Ge) or Gunye Ge(gunyege) an active and aggressive mask that serves a number of functions. When performing as a âfirewatchâ mask, Zakpai would insure proper use of cooking fires by women and will throw sticks and things about and knock over cook pots with their meals into the fires and may even beat the women if they were careless in their use of fire. In the past it also served as a war mask. Up for sale is a very nice Senufo Indian tribe Mamiwata mask.The item is in very good condition as far as I can see.Featuring excellent hand carved and painted workmanship.The item was purchased years ago from the estate sale of a college professor right here in Illinois.On the back,it is marked 1835.Not sure what that means.The item measures 15 1/2"tall by 7"wide.The card tied to the mask reads; This mask is called"Mamiwata"It comes from and is still used by the Senufo tribe from North Ivory Coast and represents the spirit of water.It protects the fishermen and the sailors.It is used for dancing in praise of the water spirit to get good fishing or a safe trip. This very detailed. Lifelike& life sized BELLY MASK shows the wear from over time of normal age& use, including scratches and some splitting in the wood. However, overall in very nice condition. PLEASE SEE ALL PHOTOS for further discriptive purposes. A LIZARD engraving faces head down towards the navel, with tail pointing upward between the breasts. There are 3 holes on each side of MASK for tying on to the body. MASK measures approximately 26 inches in height by 13 inches in width and is about 9 inches deep.

Antique African Mask owned by descendant of slave in Mississippi
This very old African mask is owned by a local man whose family are descendants of slaves who have lived here in Woodville. Mississippi for over 200 years. He unfortunately doesn't know much about it other than the fact that the mask has been passed down in his family from generation to generation and that it came from from his grandmother on his mother's side of the family. In spite of the fact that I encouraged him to keep it, he would like to sell it. The colors are very beautiful and other than the tip of one horn being broken, it is in very good shape. It feels very sturdy and strong and it appears to have been carved from one piece of wood although I am no expert on this subject. We live in a very rural area and I am not aware of qualified appraisers here locally, however I would be happy to send more photos by request. Mainly Punu and Lumbo. This type of Punu Male Mask is extremely dificult to find and incredibly few, because the complicated and elaborated volumetric work by these tribes is usually made for female masks. This very one mask presents gorgeous aging patina, still showing the delicate polychromed black and white work on surface. Some time in the past these masks were painted with white pigment, continuosly renewed once it wore off. Mask depicts a male guardian spirit. Very attractive and large antique porcelain pitcher or wine jug. From England. The jug has a mask face spout and is decorated with various putti and figures, with leaves. Vines and acorns. The pitcher is in excellent condition, there are no repairs, cracks or chips. There is an indent on the bottom. 1003' The pitcher measures about 12" tall and is about 4 1/4" across the bottom. It is fragile and heavy. So I will not ship this overseas. Please review photos and ask questions before bidding. Please pay within 48 hours. I usually ship within 3 working days of payment.
