This mask belongs to the most famous of the Songye masks. Made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The face generally is covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented, the mouth is most often square and protruding. If it has a central crest, it is masculine; if not, feminine. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. During initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. BACKGROUND The Ngbaka are situated mostly south of the Ubangi River. In northern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their settlements were dispersed and lack of overall political organization; a hamlet would generally be made up of an extended family or patrilineal clan. They practiced slash-and-burn agriculture growing manioc, maize, sorghum and bananas and lived off fishing and hunting. They also raise chickens and goats for eggs and milk. The Ngbaka had a system of initiation named gaza or ganza: that which gives strength. Future initiates had to undergo trials of physical endurance and would attain a first level of knowledge by means of song and corporeal techniques, particularly choreographic turns. In the rites of passage, re-creations of ancestors played an important role. Circumcision and excision took place after several months spent outside the village. Large slit drums are common, the end of which depict buffaloes and antelopes. Artistic products include figures, masks, pipes, necklaces, sticks, musical instruments, and zoomorphic statuettes used in the hunt. Grooves striate the nose, forehead and the temples. From the tip of the animals horn at the top of the mask to the end of the long chin it is approx 15.5" long and the face is approx 5.5" wide. I have no idea what the mask is setting on. The arts of the Yoruba are as numerous as their deities. And many objects are placed on shrines to honor the gods and the ancestors. Beautiful sculpture abounds in wood and brass and the occasional terracotta. Varied masking traditions have resulted in a great diversity of mask forms. This Yoruba helmet mask, with its characteristic enlarged head and bulging eyes, was worn during communal rituals known as“Gelede. The Gelede society honors the mystical powers of ancestors and the elderly women of the tribe. These dynamic masquerade performances take place during funerals and annual agricultural ceremonies. This fine Gelede example was acquired from a private Delaware collector who amassed a large collection West African materials. This Kuba M'Boom/ Bwoom mask is carved from a single piece of wood. Copper, raffia cloth, hide, plant materials, plus bead and shell embellishments attached(SEE PICTURES) The raffia cloth is all hand-woven as are the various strings and ropes used throughout. The glass bead-work throughout is the work of a skilled artist! Note the amazing beaded panel located on the back of the mask and the tiny beads decorating the face. The colors and patterns are spectacular. Dancers see through the two nose holes. This mask features the traditional enlarged brow and broad nose. With bands of beads on the face, temples and back of the head. The bead-work pattern at the temples imitate ethnic tattoos and the design at the back of the head is one associated with royalty. This mask is capped and trimmed by an array of cowrie shells. Condition: Good condition. Misc. wear. Dents, scratches, a few missing beads. A few missing cowrie shells possible.
