An agrarian people who also raise cattle on a relatively large scale. The Mossi boast one of the only centralized governments for a single culture in West Africa. The population is divided into something of a caste system, and the art producing blacksmiths and wood carvers are actually separate castes. The art of the Mossi is generally reserved for the aristocratic, and though Islam has pervaded a large portion of Mossi culture, some of their original artistic styles still persist today. Of the two distinct social groups. The tengabisi are those who possess the masks. They are most renowned for their colorful plank masks. Which can often be several feet high and quite heavy. This is a small plank mask, most likely a reproduction due to its size, but tradition in style, and attractively pigmented. There is a superstructure on the lower portion of the mask featuring an antelope creature, not unlike that seen among the Bambara. The mask does not appear to have undergone any breaks or repairs. It demonstrates normal signs of wear from age, including minor dents, scratches, and age cracking, which should be considered normal. Though the pigment is faded in places, it is still strongly represented. A very nice piece that will make a lovely addition to any collection. The face is characterized by a domed forehead surmounted with three carved horns and a short triangular nose and without any indication of eyes and mouth.This passport mask was used by the initiates in the Poro society. Among the Loma people of Liberia who are identified as the Toma in Guinea. The menâs secret society known as Poro is the primary association for the initiation of all males and the means whereby social control is exercised. Powerful leaders of this secret society have badges of office and certain symbols reserved to them to influence initiates. Large version of such masks were worn horizontally on the head and held by the projecting horns. Some of these horizontal masks appeared during initiations of youths into manhood while others were held in the menâs secret Poro Society precinct in the âbushâ where they were kept hidden from the uninitiated. The present piece is a rare example of passport masks attributed to the Loma or Toma. The well-known passports mask come mainly from the Dan. But. This cluster is composed of a number of distinct but related peoples, the most prominent of which are the Chokwe, but the cluster also includes the Lunda, Ovimbundu, Lwena, Luvala, Mbwela, and Imbangala. Indicating this was actually used& worn, rather than created only for display. The Eyes have slits carved into them, so you can see through them, and It also has holes on the sides for attaching this to a person's face/head. There's also a hole at the top, which could be used for hanging, but that'top' hole was also used to secure this to one's head. I'm reasonably sure this is a PUNU mask. Also sometimes attributed to: Apono. Bapunu, Mpongwe, Pounou, Puno tribes/groups of Gabon, Africa. Punu masks are distinguished by white(sometimes black) faces with protruding pursed lips, high-domed foreheads, and characteristic rigid high coiffures ... morereflecting the Punu women's hair styles. The almost always feature raised diamond-shape scarification marks on the foreheads and temples. These characteristics are ALL present on this lovely mask. From"THE TRIBAL ARTS OF AFRICA" by Bacquart: This type of mask is used by various tribes in Gabon. Spirit Maiden Mask" portrays a beautiful maiden with her whitened face and serene expression. As in life this beautiful maiden wears an elaborate hairstyle shown through polychrome colors. The mask would be worn with a colorful costume covering her body. Although the mask has an Asian expression. No such connection has been established. known as duma or mvudi, it represents a female guardian spirit in the initiation of young girls, funerary rites, ancestor cults, and also in dances of the full moon. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. Antique Chinese Carved Wood Fierce Warrior MASK with Dogs/Dragons
An antique Chinese warrior mask. Carved from rosewood or boxwood with a lovely dark mahogany color. His face has a fierce expression, with bone eye and teeth. Two dogs or dragons, I'm not sure which, are at the top sides of his headdress, baring their bone teeth and glaring eyes. The figure measures 8 1/2" high. 6 3/4" in width, and 3 1/4" in depth. It is in very good antique condition, there are two raised points missing from his headdress, shown in the photo with the left-side dog. His left eye has been lost, but has been painted in to match, and only slightly varies from the original right eye, as seen in the photos. That said. I cant seem to find the connection there or a reference to the one in mind. Antique vintage decorative architectural plaster head mask Greco-Roman church
A large decorative antique plaster head measuring approx 13" x 13" x 6" 33cm x 33cm x 15cm) possibly from an architectural moulding or grand building. It makes a stunning feature or an impressive wall hanging. Its in good condition for its age- I believe it has been painted in matt chalk coloured paint a long time ago and there are a few small areas where this is peeling. But I think this adds to its vintage character, although you could probably strip the paint off if you wanted to get it down to the bare plaster. This is pretty heavy and being plaster. You can collect or I am happy to send it by courier. However it probably wouldn't be insured as it would be considered fragile so this will be at your own risk, although I will package it very carefully, and build a wooden frame for transport and wrap it in copious amounts ... moreof cardboard and bubble wrap. Original pilot's oxygen mask. The mask is still in the original packaging. The box shows signs of wear and has metal reinforced edges and a tab in the back for hanging with instructions printed on the box. The date of manufacture was May 1944. It is complete with the breathing hose. The mask, and the cloth helmet that the mask snaps into to hold it in place. The rubber is in pristine condition, no cracks and still very pliable. The chin strap is covered in real sheepskin for comfort. It is a size medium. It appears to be completely intact with no holes or rips. The cloth is slightly discolored from age. It depicts perhaps a ruler or god with a crown that includes two fierce dragons. The eyes of the man and dragon are inlaid glass. All the teeth are carved bone. The carving is approx. 9.25" tall and nearly 7" wide. It's made to rest on the chin and two side tassels of the crown. There's a hook for wall hanging but I believe that is a more recent addition. The dragon is photo#7 is missing its top fangs-otherwise this is in very nice condition-not even any cracks from aging. Antique Asian Beautifully Hand Carved Mask
This is a beautiful mask. Very Finely. Hand Carved from a heavy dark red wood. I am told it is old and in exceptional shape. There is a chip in the old man's Beard which when hung or laying on a table one would not notice that chip. It actually shows up in the pictures I have taken much more than one would ever notice. This old man has a very happy, sweet, full of wisdom look to him. I'm sure the person who carved it must have had beautiful energy about them. The man appears to me to be smiling. It is about 2 3/4 inches tall including the lid. Nicely hollowed. It weighs about 37 grams. Good condition as shown- tiny chip on the edge of the foot rim. Mrs. Mary Morrison. Was a collector, former museum curator and lecturer on Asian art at the University of British Columbia, Canada. She also played an important role in creating the Canadian Society for Asian Arts which got its start in Vancouver in 1968. Over her lifetime, she collected a fabulous collection of Chinese antiques, mostly snuff bottles, and porcelain. Most of her pieces were collected between the 1940's- 70's in England and North America. We were lucky enough to purchase some of the nicer pieces which ... morewe are offering on ebay. Tips of each nose has been dinged just a bit. The Intricate Male Headpiece has 2 Dragons with Inlaid Teeth in Great Condition. There are two teeth sections that are missing on one of the Dragons. Overall in great condition. But a few small scratches and dings would be expected. The Female Headpiece has 2 Birds with Inlaided Eyes. These Pieces were evidently carved by Master Carvers.
