The triangle of the Bambara region, divided in two parts by the Niger River, constitutes the greater part of the western and southern Mali of today. The dry savanna permits no more than a subsistence economy, and the soil produces, with some difficulty, corn, millet, sorghum, rice, and beans. Their traditions include six male societies, each with its own type of mask. Initiation for men lasts for seven years and ends with their symbolic death and their rebirth. Nearly every Bambara man had to pass through these societies in succession, until, upon reaching the highest rank, he had acquired a comprehensive knowledge of ancestral traditions. The jo society has become a sort of framework for other initiation society. Until a few decades ago. Initiation was obligatory for every young man. Jo initiations take place every seven years, after candidates receive six years of special training. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their history of human sacrifice. The Yoruba culture is subdivided into a number of cults. Each identified by particular thing it holds sacred. This mask originates from the Gelede cult, which focuses its attention on the power of elderly women. During Gelede festivities helmet masks such as these are worn on or over the head with a raffia costume, and danced in reverence and celebration. On the'cheeks' of the face are large identifying scarification marks. It still has most of its original pigment, including white(kaolin) green, etc. Color of the pigment is faded in some areas, but still represented strongly for the most part, and the piece stands well on its own without support. This superb Tikar mask is finely crafted and has a rich patina consistent with age and use. It measures 16.5" by 10" by 7.5" and is a substantial cast. Engraved circles decorate the cheeks; holes around the base(see photo) may once have secured cloth or other woven material to the casting. Casting irregularities around the top of the piece are artifacts of the production process and should be appreciated as such. There is also a small indentation on the left cheek. Purpose unknown. This antique cast is in fine condition, and although it shows surface wear consistent with age it does not have any notable damage. Its sculpture is widely known, in particular through their powerful Mulwanda warrior masks– showing bulging foreheads, flared noses and gaping mouth with ranges of filled teeth. This is a beautiful antique Chokwe mask from the Kasai region in Southern DRC. The Chokwe is a large tribe spread over Southern DRC. Angola and Zambia. It is known for its prolific production of sculptures, which included both court art and masks. Masks usually represented spirits and can be classified into three categories: chief masks, initiation masks and dance mask. Out of those the most famous are the Chihongo(male) and Pwo(female) ancestor figures. Although the Chokwe also produced masks representing animals. Including the bush pig Ngulu mask. This is a beautiful and spectacular antique face mask from the Kumu in Northern DRC. The Kumu is a medium tribe spread over the central part of the Oriental province in DRC. Their sculpture is known for its highly abstract features- with only a few types of masks known. The mask here. Known as the Nsembu, is made of hard wood. It shows a flat face with a slight curve towards the forehead, square eyes, a square nose and square mouth with carved teeth. The face also shows a carved black line in a cross motive on the forehead and circling the eyes and is covered in white kaolin pigments. This is a very nice- highly expressive mask. It has many subgroups and its sculpture is widely known for its often spectacular and highly expressive features, whether fetishes or the Kifwebe masks. The piece here is of the white female type coming from the southern part of the Songye territory(where Luba influence is found) It is made of a light wood and is a prime example of Songye sculpture– with a large round head, round slit yes long elongated nose and square, cross-shaped mouth. The overall line of this mask is striking, in particular the combination of roundness and deep curves. This is a beautiful mask from the Mbole tribe in the Equator province of DRC. The Mbole is a tribe medium in size– that is primarily known for its long. Antique Hand Carved African Whole Head Mask From Mozambique
You will be bidding on a very old hand carved wooden African whole head mask. It is carved from one piece of wood. This mask was purchased in an antique shop in Tanzania in the early 1990s and belived to have been made in Mozambique. The wood is quite light in weight. It has intricate carving designs on the forehead. Cheeks, chin, nose, and jawline. There is some hair on a portion of the head, but it appears that much of it has fallen out. It feels like real hair. This mask measures about 12" by about 8" It would have to be a small head to fit into it. One of the eyes has a tiny slit on the inside and the teeth openings do go all the way through, so a person could breathe with the mask on. Antique Japanese Chinese Samurai Mask – Curling Dragons, Bone Eyes, Teeth
This is an awesome hand carved antique Japanese mask carved in a really hard and heavy wood. Possibly iron wood or rose wood. An eBay member in Tawain was really rude and adamant that this is from China, not Japan. Among his insults(Including saying that"Yanks" are never right and that I am"dim" he sent links to similar masks that were described as coming from China, but none were particularly credible sources. However, given that we wish to accurately describe everything that we put on eBay, I want to mention this so that you know there is a possibility that this comes from China. The mask’s face looks like a samurai warrior, and has a stylized helmet, that comes down on the sides with Japanese dragons and tassels carvbed in wood. The eyes and teeth of the man and dragons are carved bone, and some of these are missing(one ... moreeye from each dragon and the buy, as well as some teeth) Although the eyes are missing, it is really a nice piece with no other damage, and the missing eyes make it look even more fearsome. It's made to rest on the chin and two side tassels of the crown. There's a hook for wall hanging but I believe that is a more recent addition. I believe it is likely late 19th or early 20th century.
