The Mask is from Wayang Topeng plays. It predicts Laksamana. wooden mask is of Laksmana. Who appears in the epic Indian story, the Ramayana. Laksmana wears a modest crown to show that he comes from a royal family. Spots of bright colours- red. Pink, blue and white- decorate the crown like jewels. A double band of blue borders the base of the crown. Below the crown, Laksmana's black curly hair makes a fringe across his forehead. The head and crown are carved from the same piece of wood, and the features have been carefully carved and painted. Laksmana's face is smooth and almost flat. Apart from the nose. His yellow heart-shaped face tapers to a slightly ... morepointed chin, and his features are evenly proportioned with a long straight nose. Thin curving black lines indicate the planes of the face, a curl of hair follows the line of the cheekbone, and the nostrils are outlined. Laksmana's eyes are narrow, with the outline of an eyelid above each one. His eyebrows are high on the forehead and arched decoratively. His mouth is slightly open, displaying the top set of white teeth. He appears to be smiling as his painted red lips curve upwards, and at the ends there are laughter lines. He has a stylised moustache and there is a hint of beard in the triangle beneath the lower lip. Laksmana's features are very refined. In Indonesian theatre this shows that the character is noble and honourable. Rare Wee (Kran, Guerre) Antique Tribal Mask Liberia
Greetings. This is a very rare antique Wee mask which has been hand carved from wood. Has metal teeth, cloth held on with metal studs and animal skin. The tongue has been painted with a red pigment and the teeth with a white pigment. The Wee have been known in the past as the Kran in Liberia and the Nguere or Guerre in Ivory Coast. This specimen is a male mask. Wee make their female masks rounded or oval with narrow eyes and non-challenging features. The male masks however appear larger in size, have grosser proportions with an open mouth with teeth, tube like eyes and fur. The features of this mask refer to forces in the bush whose energy and powers add to the authority of the spirit represented here. Female masks are to entertain whereas the male masks exercise social control, punish wrong doers, declare wars and proclaim peace. It came with another Mask currently on a separate listing which is signed by artist and is from Kispiox. British Columbia. Perhaps this one is of the same origin. definitely Northwest Coast. It is carved out of one slab of wood and hand painted in detail. The wood has much age and patina and has/ is separating at different grains. The mask is structurally solid and in one piece. It is unsigned and unmarked. In excellent condition with patina and surface wear as shown. Kind of on the thicker side. Nigeria traw was attached at the little holes on the brim to hide the bearer's face. My mother(85) remembers being told there was something about the blue dye,but she can't remember what! It's a very old piece although the exact age is unknown it shows lots of wear and really has a lot of character. One small chip on the left horn, but due to the darkening in the wood its not visible. It is a fabulous wooden Senufo Mask with a bird figure on top with his wings spread like a shield. The hornbill bird was one of the Senufo primordial creatures and the first to be hunted by men. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. Up for auction is an Antique authentic Rare Authentic Pacific Northwest Coast Native Mask or totem. Cir. late 1800's-1900's. Came out of an estate with a collection of world artifacts from the Washington DC area. All masks were in storage and need cleaning, all pre 1950's with many from early 1900's. This mask is believed to be from the 1890's-1920's. Wire hanging material added later as shown in the photos. Mask has significant wear and paint loss. The wood is in solid condition with a hole drilled in the top at some point, probably for mounting to a wall or totem. Otherwise, a very good early example of a very rare artifact. Antique Quality Carved African Tribal Kuba Bwoom Mask Helmet Fur Beard&Leather
For sale here is an old authentic Kuba tribal wood carved helmet from the Republic of. It is made mainly of wood with the addition of tin forehead and leather back. The mask is decorated with different size and color beads and shells and has a long skin with fur beard. Will probably date to the early 20th century. Helmet masks of this kind are known among the Bushoong as Bwoom. This is one of the three so-called royal masks of the Kuba. The others being the Mwaash a Mbouy and the Ngaady a Mwaash. In reality it seems that the concept of a triad of"royal masks" has been grossly oversimplified. In truth. The Kuba/Bushoong produce a diversity of masks. And many can perform by themselves or in conjunction with lesser known initiatory or village masks. The Bwoom mask is quite possibly the autochthonous mask of the region. With variants ... morein nearly all of the Kuba sub-groups. Though Bushoong folk tales exist to explain its appearance as a pygmy or a hydrocephalic. The mask may have more in common with other large masculine helmet masks dispersed over the wider general area. Unlike other Kuba masks such as the Mwaash a Mbouy. Which is usually buried with its owner, the Bwoom may be passed down from one person to another. Thus it is not unusual to find old–in some cases ancient–Bwoom masks still being used by young dancers. This fine old mask has been rebeaded on numerous occasions and displays the more archaic"blindfold" style beading across the eyes. Which in more modern examples becomes thin and stylized.
