Living in Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso are neighbors of the Bamana. Today they are heavily Islamized, however they often retain the use of masks and figures for ceremonies and rituals closely related to the Bamana. This mask with two faces covered with sheet brass is probably related to the N'Tomo initiation mask for young boys found among the Bamana. It is uniquely Marka by the brass sheet covering the face. A woven support of reed encases the back of the mask to provide a secure fit for the wearer's head and ruffled grass extends from the back of the meshed reed around to the front of the mask. The triangle of the Bambara region, divided in two parts by the Niger River, constitutes the greater part of the western and southern Mali of today. The dry savanna permits no more than a subsistence economy, and the soil produces, with some difficulty, corn, millet, sorghum, rice, and beans. Their traditions include six male societies, each with its own type of mask. Initiation for men lasts for seven years and ends with their symbolic death and their rebirth. Nearly every Bambara man had to pass through these societies in succession, until, upon reaching the highest rank, he had acquired a comprehensive knowledge of ancestral traditions. The jo society has become a sort of framework for other initiation society. Until a few decades ago. Initiation was obligatory for every young man. Jo initiations take place every seven years, after candidates receive six years of special training. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their history of human sacrifice. The Yoruba culture is subdivided into a number of cults. Each identified by particular thing it holds sacred. This mask originates from the Gelede cult, which focuses its attention on the power of elderly women. During Gelede festivities helmet masks such as these are worn on or over the head with a raffia costume, and danced in reverence and celebration. On the'cheeks' of the face are large identifying scarification marks. It still has most of its original pigment, including white(kaolin) green, etc. Color of the pigment is faded in some areas, but still represented strongly for the most part, and the piece stands well on its own without support. Wear and age marks are in evidence as is common, including minor age cracking, rub marks, etc. but the piece does not appear to have undergone any serious breaks or repairs. This is a beautiful, prominent, eye catching standalone piece, and a highly coveted artform from the Yoruba culture! Made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society that the Luba borrowed from the Songye. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. Others types of masks found among the Luba include a rounded anthropomorphic black mask, a rounded human mask with horns, and a human mask with bird beak. In general. Luba masks are called mukishi ya kuhakwa. They represent the spirit of death and usually appear as a male-female pair and dance wearing costumes made of animal skins and woven coverings. Up for auction is a pair of rare. Antique wooden masks from the Mortlock Islands, part of Chuuk in Micronesia in the South Pacific. The masks, which are both male and female, are called tapuanu meaning"sacred soul/spirit. These masks were worn during ceremonial dances and represent guardian spirits. Traditionally, they are painted with white faces and black trim and only come from this small group of islands in Micronesia. The above pair of masks are in excellent condition despite their 50+ years of age. The female mask has a crack in the wood due to drying(please see photos) Both masks have minor paint wear. Antique Japanese Wood Theatrical Noh Mask / 18th-19th Century / Edo - Meiji Era
Antique Japanese Wood Theatrical Noh Mask 19th Century or Earlier ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ A very fine antique Japanese theatrical Noh mask dating to the 18th- 19th century or earlier(Edo or Meiji era) This mask was hand-carved from a very hard. Light wood and the front surface was finished with a thin coat of gesso that was painted with the character's features. The mask shows great wear. Through the surface decoration right down to the wood and even into the wood. This mask is very old. SIZE: Height- 6.5" Width- 5.5" Depth- 1.75" This mask depicts one of the male characters in a Noh play. Possibly a God, Demon, or mythological being. The face has his mouth closed and down-turned(frown or anger) The eyes and nostrils have hand-drilled holes and there are two small holes on either side of the mask for attachment ... moreof string or cloth to hold the mask in place on the actor of the drama. The features are painted in white and a black or very dark brown and the mouth is red. All of the paints have darkened and the mask has developed a beautiful rich. Aged patina over the centuries. This mask is in good condition for its age however. As you can see from the photographs, it has seen much use and the surfaces are worn overall. There is a loss to the nose and just below it and some other areas, have lost their gesso and painted surfaces. The wood is exposed in some places and has become worn and developed a dark, smooth and glossy patina. The painted surfaces also show wear and a darkened glossy patina and there are places where the white gesso under-coating is exposed. The back side of the mask also shows smooth wear and darkening. As seen in the photographs. This is a very fine and early example of a Noh mask with strong expression and presence. PLEASE NOTE: The low opening bid. With no reserve, is not meant to reflect upon the actual monetary value of the piece. I was in Nepal for 9 months in 1989 on a USA Fulbright Fellowship to do research on traditional medicine and plants. Between 1991 and 1995 I was executive director of the Biodiversity Institute of Nepal where I spent my summers. Much of this involved treks in the mountains above Kathmandu and especially above Pokhara in the Anapurna Range and it was there that I also collected most of my folk ethnographic items such as this mask as well as in Kathmandu. Offered here is a rare. Early 20 th C museum quality shaman JOKER mask made of wood.Found during a trek to a remote Gurung Himalayan village in the western Anneprenia range, Nepal. Joker masks are found throughout the Himalayas; especially in Nepal, Bhutan, and Arunachal Pradesh in northeast India. ... moreThis mask is used by the Gurungs people as comic relief to open up a festival and also appear in dances during the intermission between acts of serious religious(usually Buddhist) dramas. These masks are usually recognized by their dark pigment and multiple carved furrows in the face often with a sly grin. This classical stylized Joker, found in 1990,is now estimated to be over 100 years old. This estimate is based on the fact that in order to leave Nepal in 1990 it had to be below 100 years old which was verified by the Nepal museum. The mask is 10-3/4 inches tall, 7 inches wide, and 2-1/2 inches deep. This is beautiful antique Muyombo mask from the Central Pende. The Pende is a large tribe spread over Southern DRC. Although typically classified into two main groups(Western and Easter) At least four subgroups are known, with great variations in styles: Western, Central, Kwilu and Eastern Pende. Each of them produced an extraordinary array of masks. Some of which were destined to initiation rites, while others were danced in villages upon a series of social events. As often in traditional tribal sculpture. Pende masks are highly symbolistic and can serve different purposes, depending on the occasion. The piece here is known as Muyombo. It shows a flat face with a large forehead, fixed eyes with large eyelids, a square nose and triangular mouth. The appendix below the chin. Sometimes referred to as a beard is said to rather be an illustration ... moreof the sheet covering the bodies of the deceased– which also explains the fixity of the face represented. Unlike the related Giwoyo. However, the Muyombo was danced in villages and is associated to the heat of life, as opposed to the coolness of death. The piece here is of beautiful quality. It is made of a medium wood and shows great details and very fine cut. Including the elongated face with protruding forehead and thin eyebrows, flat cheeks and tiny, triangular mouth. It is covered in red pigments. Also showing black and white triangular motives on the bottom of the mask. Dimensions are 15x6.

Antique Hand Carved African Whole Head Mask From Mozambique with Hair
You will be bidding on a very old hand carved wooden African whole head mask. It is carved from one piece of wood. This mask was purchased in an antique shop in Tanzania in the early 1990s and belived to have been made in Mozambique. The wood is quite light in weight. It has intricate carving designs on the forehead. Temples, cheeks, chin, nose, and jawline. There is hair on a portion of the head that feels and looks like real hair. This mask measures about 10" by about 8" It would have to be a small head to fit into it. The eyes have no slits on the inside, but the teeth openings do go all the way through, so a person could breathe with the mask on. This mask would be held to the face by hand rather than any kind of strap. It is very realistic. The way it is made, it could be displayed hanging on a wall or sitting on a desk. This is a very rare and unusual item used in some kind of Tibetan Tantric ritual. It is an ornately decorated scull from a Ram. I do not know the details of how or why. But I do know this one is very old. I was only abel to find three of these and don't think I will every have anymore. Here are the particulars: The horns are about 16" wide. Front to back is about 9" height is 4.5" Material appears to be brass with some copper. Eyes look like glass and there are also some coral accents. Antique Japanese Lacquer Noh Mask Netsuke-19th C.
A wonderful old Japanese lacquer Noh mask netsuke. It is in very good antique condition with only one small spot along the edge where the lacquer has worn or slightly chipped. It is too small to photograph but you can barely feel a tiny rough spot. And it can be seen with a magnifying glass. The carving is very detailed and is a black lacquer over red, so as the black wears through the red shows. This is truly an old, late 1800's netsuke, and not a reproduction.

Indo Persian Battle Helmet & Mask Islamic Armour Antique Bronze Muslim Caliphate
A beautiful late period Indo Persian bronze Muslim battle helmet. Islamic armour. A beautiful bronze Islamic Indo Persian war helmet comprising; integral mask and fleur de le’ type helmet spike. The whole with chip carved calligraphic sections with words from the Quran and floral decoration A similar mask is featured on the front dustcover of the book; THE ARTS OF THE MUSLIM KINGHT(The Furusiyya Art Foundation Collection, page 336) but without the helmet cover. The helmet/mask is made of bronze riveted sections. The skull of the helmet is made up of chip carved plates and sections incorporating Arabic calligraphy and the entire skull cap is decorated with Islamic art flower motifs in typical Islamic floral design. The lower front side of the helmet is a face mask with hexagonal eye slits and chip carved eyebrows. The lower half of the mask ... morelooks like folds of cloth covering the mouth area which has breathing holes pierced through and is patterned within the corrugations. According to the book these date back to the late 16th Century but this type of helmet was made as late as the early 19th Century. There is a little green corrosion inside some of the joints and chip carving, the inside padding has been replaced at a later date and has unfortunately been glued into place, this means that some fool has removed the liner and chin straps. That said, this lovely Indo Persian Helmet shows only light wear commensurate with age, it has no major cracks, dents or dings and it would make a fine addition to any collection for display. I picked this item up in Saudi Arabia when I went with my dad, he got talking with some Bedouin who took us out to the desert for a couple of days to get a feel for desert life. One of them admired my gold kerb bracelet and I ended up swapping it for this helmet and two curved daggers. I will post Worldwide, this item will be carefully packed and swiftly despatched!

ANTIQUE AFRICAN HELMET MASK Approximately 16" long. Very strong features Raffia around top of mask The mask has a couple of small splits on it. And some scrapes which is normal for a African tribal item of this age having spent many decades on various continents. Please see the photos for condition. I obtained this piece from a woman whose husband and her traveled extensively in Africa. Actually living with the tribes at times. The couple collected a good number of pieces through the years. Antique/Vintage Wooden Dance Mask MEXICANITO Primitive Danced/Rented Guatemalan
I purchased this from a dear friend. Jon, who is an anthropologist that lives in Guatemala and is as passionate about masks as I am. He purchased this from a mask rental shop. Yes. In Guatemala they rent masks year after year) This has been danced and is well worn. The eyes are typical of a style in certain regions of this time in the 60s-80s w/inlaid thick. Laminated plastic eyes. They are glossy and reflective like glass and very attractive. This method was chosen by some artists because of problems with glass(usually of discarded bottles) Falling through the inside of the mask. The other style was/is of painted seed. Seed is perhaps the most common now. Most from this time-period and region. Have damaged eyes, or none left(just gaping holes) The painting on the eyes is actually rather fine for this laminate type. Classic chocolate brown ... morewood and blue eyes from Guatemala. I love the brown/blue contrast! Mask is depicting someone of Spanish decent(much of Guatemalan culture and mask dancing re-lives the days of the Spanish dominance over the region years ago) Has what i call the classic"Kewpie Doll" hair curl on the front that is indicative of Guatemalan masks. Masks originally had an old shoe string. But was taken off as it was disgustingly dirty. I have temporarily added screws and a cotton string in order to hang it. Screws have not dug into the wood. I only put them in as they were ever so slightly smaller than the per-existing holes in the mask. And are more or less sitting/plugging the holes. Looks like the original artist must have hit a knot in the wood near the mustache? Mask is about 8 inches tall by 6.5 inches wide. About me: I quit my corporate job that I no longer enjoyed. Antique primitive African carved carving Bird mask
I found this mask along with other African items at an estate sale. The man I bought it from says that it had belonged to his grandparents who were missionaries in Africa in the fifties. True or not I don't know but this mask does look very old. It appears to be of some kind of bird. I do not know what it was used for or what it represents. There are holes on the forehead and down the sides of the face. Maybe for hair or feathers, they do not go all the way through mask. I am offering this. Antique, Mexican, OLD MAN, Hola Viejo” Pink Faced, carved, wooden mask-on stand as pictured. It is late 1800’s to early 1900’s. I acquired this piece when I lived in Florida. From a collector who purchased it from a high end gallery in New York City years ago. It has oil marks from facial oil on the inside- so it has been“danced” And also has old termite damage from long ago. It has several old coats of paint, and loss of paint, and lots of wear, and an old repair for a crack on the top, that looks great. Whatever happened condition-wise was perfect. It is truly a fine mask, and shows very well as you can see. I am moving back to Florida from Arizona, and am selling my collection. Antique asian bone mask carving
Up for auction is an Antique Asian Ox Bone carving of an Asian mans face. It has been authenticated as an Ox bone carving from the late 1800's. It was bought in Korea from and antique dealer during the Korean conflict. The carving stands 7 1/2 inches tall, is 3 1/2 inches across the back and 5 1/2 around the front. It ranges from 1/8 inch think to 1/4 inch thick. It is a beautiful piece and is approximately 100+ years old from wha ti have been told. It has a flaw in that part of the headdress is missing. This is a 27" inch tribal mask that was actually worn during ceremonial dances. The width of this mask is 6" There are 2 openings on each side of the mask for binding this onto the face. The eyes have been painted black. Blue and white and have had slits cut out of them so that the tribesmen could see while performing in the ceremonial dances. This piece was on display at the Smithsonian. And was given to my neighbor by the owner of the display. who was an anthropology intern there, Even though it is used. It is still in extremely nice condition. You can see in the extreme close ups below that the detailed carving is still sharp and the paint is still ... morevery substantial. The theme of the mask seems to be a large serpent. The mask starts under the chin with a carving of a large black snake. The body of the serpent becomes the face of the mask. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piece to get hollow wood cells. This is factual and not a guess. Even with Dogon. I assume this is a decorative piece since it does not seem to be proportionate to fit a human face. Unless very small. There is a hole in the head near the top back that is meant for hanging. ITEM CONDITION: Excellent condition. Solid mask with only a few scuffs in the paint from age. One crack in wood as shown which was corrected at time of production. This mask with a beautiful age patina and very detailed realistic carving, looks to be from early 20 th century. The Baoulé(or Baule) are an Akan people and one of the largest groups in the Ivory Coast. The Baoulé are farmers who live in the eastern side of Côte d'Ivoire(Ivory Coast) The Baoule people are represented by religion. Art, festivals, and equal society. There are more than sixty-five different Akan-speaking ethnic groups living in Cote d'Ivoire. They live essentially in the middle of the Cote d'Ivoire between the Comoé River and the Bandama River. Legend goes that in the 17th century the Baoulé left present day Ghana and traveled west into present day Côte ... mored'Ivoire under the lead of the Queen Pokou. According to oral tradition. The Baoulé were forced to leave Ghana when the Ashanti rose to power. While they were fleeing for their lives they came to a large river that they were unable to cross. With their enemies chasing them they began to throw their most prized possessions into the river. It came to the Queen's attention that their most valuable possession was her son. Antique African Mask Museum Quality Brass Ivory Coast Elegua :Late 1800's -1920
Thank you for looking at this genuine mask from the Ivory Coast. I am waiting for the official providence from the collector but he told me tonight is from 1890- 1920. The collector has a huge name in many reputable collections like Sothebys and The Met and Christies. If you are interested I will tell you privately. The mask is made of brass and I believe its the elegua. The appraised value is $17.000-$20,000.
